2026 Test-time Prompt Intervention
abstract
Test-time compute has led to remarkable success in the large language model (LLM) community, particularly for complex tasks, where longer chains of thought (CoTs) are generated to enhance reasoning capabilities. However, growing evidence reveals that such reasoning models often produce CoTs plagued by excessive redundancy, including repetitive verification steps and unnecessary reasoning shifts. The root cause lies in post-training of them that overly rely on outcome reward paradigms, as the data of process reward paradigms, which regulate intermediate reasoning steps, is difficult to construct at scale. To address this, we propose PI, a novel framework for Test-time Prompt Intervention. PI provides an interface to dynamically guide and regulate reasoning paths during inference through timely (When module) and proper (How module) interventions and post-intervention sampling (Which module). This allows human problem-solving expertise and cognitive science principles to be seamlessly integrated into LLMs’ reasoning processes, enhancing controllability and interpretability. Extensive experiments across multiple models and datasets demonstrate that PI significantly shortens CoTs while reducing hallucination, yielding more concise and reliable reasoning.

2026 PodBench: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Instruction-Aware Audio-Oriented Podcast Script Generation
abstract
Podcast script generation requires LLMs to synthesize structured, context-grounded dialogue from diverse inputs, yet systematic evaluation resources for this task remain limited. To bridge this gap, we introduce PodBench, a benchmark comprising 800 samples with inputs up to 21K tokens and complex multi-speaker instructions. We propose a multifaceted evaluation framework that integrates quantitative constraints with LLM-based quality assessment.Extensive experiments reveal that while proprietary models generally excel, open-source models equipped with explicit reasoning demonstrate superior robustness in handling long contexts and multi-speaker coordination compared to standard baselines. However, our analysis uncovers a persistent divergence where high instruction following does not guarantee high content substance.PodBench offers a reproducible testbed to address these challenges in long-form, audio-centric script generation. The code and data are publicly accessible here.

2025 NeedleInATable: Exploring Long-Context Capability of Large Language Models towards Long-Structured Tables
abstract
Processing structured tabular data, particularly large and lengthy tables, constitutes a fundamental yet challenging task for large language models (LLMs). However, existing long-context benchmarks like Needle-in-a-Haystack primarily focus on unstructured text, neglecting the challenge of diverse structured tables. Meanwhile, previous tabular benchmarks mainly consider downstream tasks that require high-level reasoning abilities, and overlook models' underlying fine-grained perception of individual table cells, which is crucial for practical and robust LLM-based table applications. To address this gap, we introduce \textsc{NeedleInATable} (NIAT), a new long-context tabular benchmark that treats each table cell as a ``needle'' and requires models to extract the target cell based on cell locations or lookup questions. Our comprehensive evaluation of various LLMs and multimodal LLMs reveals a substantial performance gap between popular downstream tabular tasks and the simpler NIAT task, suggesting that they may rely on dataset-specific correlations or shortcuts to obtain better benchmark results but lack truly robust long-context understanding towards structured tables. Furthermore, we demonstrate that using synthesized NIAT training data can effectively improve performance on both NIAT task and downstream tabular tasks, which validates the importance of NIAT capability for LLMs' genuine table understanding ability. Our data, code and models will be released to facilitate future research.

2022 Detach and Attach: Stylized Image Captioning without Paired Stylized Dataset
abstract
Stylized Image Captioning aims to generate captions with accurate image content and stylized elements simultaneously. However, large-scaled image and stylized caption pairs cost lots of resources and are usually unavailable. Therefore, it's a challenge to generate stylized captions without paired stylized caption dataset. Previous work on controlling the style of generated captions in an unsupervised way can be divided into two ways: implicitly and explicitly. The former mainly relies on a well-trained language model to capture style knowledge, which is limited to a single style and hard to handle multi-style task. Thus, the latter uses extra style constraints such as outlined style labels or stylized words extracted from stylized sentences to control the style rather than the trained style-specific language model. However, certain styles, such as humorous and romance, are implied in the whole sentence, instead of in some words of a sentence. To address the problems above, we propose a two-step method based on Transformer: firstly detach style representations from large-scaled stylized text-only corpus to provide more holistic style supervision, and secondly attach the style representations to image content to generate stylized captions. We learn a shared image-text space to narrow the gap between the image and the text modality for better attachment. Due to the trade-off between semantics and style, we explore three injection methods of style representations to balance two requirements of image content preservation and stylization. Experiments show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art systems in overall performance, especially on implied styles.
