| 2024 | A Sequential Follower Refinement Algorithm for Robust Surgery SchedulingabstractAn algorithm for the two-stage robust optimization surgery-to-operating room allocation problem is presented. The second-stage problem is an integer linear program whose convex hull is approximated using three types of specialized valid inequalities and Chvátal-Gomory cuts. The resulting linear relaxation of the second-stage problem is then dualized and integrated into the first-stage problem. The resulting mixed integer linear program, which is an approximation of the original problem, is then solved using a commercial solver. If the solution of this model is not optimal for the second-stage problem, valid inequalities for the second-stage problem are generated, yielding a type of column-generation based approach that we refer to as the sequential follower refinement (SFR) algorithm. Data from an academic medical center are used to compare the computational performance of SFR with the constraint and column generation (C&CG) algorithm, which is the only exact approach that has been specifically applied for this problem in the literature. An extensive numerical study of SFR and its computational characteristics is presented that shows that SFR yields better-quality solutions compared with C&CG, even as the termination criterion of SFR is met much sooner, especially for problems involving higher number of surgeries. | 2018 | Model for Estimation of Global Horizontal Irradiance in the Presence of Dust, Fog, and CloudsabstractThe poor spatial resolution of available ground data provides an opportunity to estimate solar irradiation from computational models based on the satellite data. The developed model employs various spectral bands of the satellite data and focuses on distinguish weather signatures, such as: dust, aerosols, fog, and clouds. These parameters affect the solar radiation availability all over the world. However, for a tropical country like India, which is potentially rich in solar energy resources, the study of these parameters is of crucial importance. A modified version of the HELIOSAT model is developed and an all-day index based on various bands of satellite data is introduced. Results are validated against the ground data recorded at various stations of the Indian Meterological Department as well as with the Meteosat East data. | 2017 | A comparative analysis of machine learning techniques for botnet detectionabstractDay by day more and more devices are getting connected to the Internet and with the advent of the Internet of Things, this rate has had an exponential growth. The lack of security in devices connected to the IoT is making them hot targets for cyber-criminals and strength of botnet attacks have increased drastically. Botnets are the technological backbones of multitudinous attacks including Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), SPAM, identity theft and organizational spying. The 2016 Dyn cyber attack involved multiple DDoS attacks with an estimated throughput of 1.2 terabits per second; the attack is the largest DDoS attack on record. In this paper, we compare three different techniques for botnet detection with each having its unique use cases. The results of the detection methods were verified using ISCX Intrusion Detection Dataset and the CTU-13 Dataset. Ankit Bansal, Sudipta Mahapatra |

| 2011 | Enforcing architectural contracts in high-level synthesisabstractWe present a high-level synthesis technique that takes as input two orthogonal descriptions: (a) a behavioral architectural contract between the implementation and the user, and (b) a microarchitecture on which the architectural contract can be implemented. We describe a prototype compiler that generates control required to enforce the contract, and thus, synthesizes the pair of descriptions to hardware. Nikhil A. Patil, Ankit Bansal, Derek Chiou |
