2026 SCIGaussian-D: Dynamic Scene Reconstruction from a Single Snapshot Compressive Image
abstract
In this paper, we explore the potential of snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) for dynamic 3D scene reconstruction from a single temporal compressed image. SCI is a low-cost imaging technique that captures high-dimensional information-such as temporal data-using$2 D$sensors and coded masks, significantly reducing data bandwidth while offering inherent privacy advantages. While recent advances in Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have enabled 3D reconstruction from SCI measurements, these methods are fundamentally limited to static scenes and fail to generalize to dynamic content. To address this, we propose SCIGaussian-D, a novel framework that enables dynamic 3D reconstruction from a single SCI image. Our method represents the scene with 3D Gaussians defined in a canonical space and models motion using learnable deformation fields. By incorporating the SCI imaging model into the training loop, SCIGaussian-D directly reconstructs the dynamic 3D scene and recovers the corresponding camera motion from a single SCI. We evaluate our method on both synthetic and real SCI datasets, demonstrating significant improvements in reconstruction quality over existing baselines. Our results establish a new state of the art for dynamic scene reconstruction within the SCI framework, paving the way for practical applications in high-speed imaging and real-time scene rendering.

2025 Controllable Text-to-3D Generation via Surface-Aligned Gaussian Splatting
abstract
While text-to-3D and image-to-3D generation tasks have received considerable attention, one important but under-explored field between them is controllable text-to-3D generation, which we mainly focus on in this work. To address this task, 1) we introduce Multi-view ControlNet (MVControl), a novel neural network architecture designed to enhance existing pre-trained multi-view diffusion models by integrating additional input conditions, such as edge, depth, normal, and scribble maps. Our innovation lies in the introduction of a conditioning module that controls the base diffusion model using both local and global embeddings, which are computed from the input condition images and camera poses. Once trained, MVControl is able to offer 3D diffusion guidance for optimization-based 3D generation. And, 2) we propose an efficient multi-stage 3D generation pipeline that leverages the benefits of recent large reconstruction models and score distillation algorithm. Building upon our MVControl architecture, we employ a unique hybrid diffusion guidance method to direct the optimization process. In pursuit of efficiency, we adopt 3D Gaussians as our representation instead of the commonly used implicit representations. We also pioneer the use of SuGaR, a hybrid representation that binds Gaussians to mesh triangle faces. This approach alleviates the issue of poor geometry in 3D Gaussians and enables the direct sculpting of fine-grained geometry on the mesh. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves robust generalization and enables the controllable generation of high-quality 3D content. 2025 IncEventGS: Pose-Free Gaussian Splatting from a Single Event Camera
abstract
Implicit neural representation and explicit 3D Gaussian Splatting (3D-GS) for novel view synthesis have achieved remarkable progress with frame-based camera (e.g. RGB and RGB-D cameras) recently. Compared to frame-based camera, a novel type of bio-inspired visual sensor, i.e. event camera, has demonstrated advantages in high temporal resolution, high dynamic range, low power consumption, and low latency, which make it favored for many robotic applications. In this work, we present IncEventGS, an incremental 3D Gaussian Splatting reconstruction algorithm with a single event camera, without the assumption of known camera poses. To recover the 3D scene representation incrementally, we exploit the tracking and mapping paradigm of conventional SLAM pipelines for IncEventGS. Given the incoming event stream, the tracker first estimates an initial camera motion based on prior reconstructed 3D-GS scene representation. The mapper then jointly refines both the 3D scene representation and camera motion based on the previously estimated motion trajectory from the tracker. The experimental results demonstrate that IncEventGS delivers superior performance compared to prior NeRF-based methods and other related baselines, even if we do not have the ground-truth camera poses. Furthermore, our method can also deliver better performance compared to state-of-the-art event visual odometry methods in terms of camera motion estimation.

2025 Convex Relaxation for Robust Vanishing Point Estimation in Manhattan World
abstract
Determining the vanishing points (VPs) in a Manhattan world, as a fundamental task in many 3D vision applications, consists of jointly inferring the line-VP association and locating each VP. Existing methods are, however, either sub-optimal solvers or pursuing global optimality at a significant cost of computing time. In contrast to prior works, we introduce convex relaxation techniques to solve this task for the first time. Specifically, we employ a "soft" association scheme, realized via a truncated multi-selection error, that allows for joint estimation of VPs’ locations and line-VP associations. This approach leads to a primal problem that can be reformulated into a quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem, which is then relaxed into a convex semidefinite programming (SDP) problem. To solve this SDP problem efficiently, we present a globally optimal outlier-robust iterative solver (called GlobustVP), which independently searches for one VP and its associated lines in each iteration, treating other lines as outliers. After each independent update of all VPs, the mutual orthogonality between the three VPs in a Manhattan world is reinforced via local refinement. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world data demonstrate that GlobustVP achieves a favorable balance between efficiency, robustness, and global optimality compared to previous works. The code is publicly available at github.com/wu-cvgl/GlobustVP.

2025 Omni-Scene: Omni-Gaussian Representation for Ego-Centric Sparse-View Scene Reconstruction
abstract
Prior works employing pixel-based Gaussian representation have demonstrated efficacy in feed-forward sparseview reconstruction. However, such representation necessitates cross-view overlap for accurate depth estimation, and is challenged by object occlusions and frustum truncations. As a result, these methods require scene-centric data acquisition to maintain cross-view overlap and complete scene visibility to circumvent occlusions and truncations, which limits their applicability to scene-centric reconstruction. In contrast, in autonomous driving scenarios, a more practical paradigm is ego-centric reconstruction, which is characterized by minimal cross-view overlap and frequent occlusions and truncations. The limitations of pixel-based representation thus hinder the utility of prior works in this task. In light of this, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of different representations, and introduces Omni-Gaussian representation with tailored network design to complement their strengths and mitigate their drawbacks. Experiments show that our method significantly surpasses state-of-the-art methods, pixelSplat and MVSplat, in ego-centric reconstruction, and achieves comparable performance to prior works in scene-centric reconstruction. 2025 Casual3DHDR: High Dynamic Range 3D Gaussian Splatting from Casually Captured Videos
abstract
Photo-realistic novel view synthesis from multi-view images, such as neural radiance field (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), has gained significant attention for its superior performance. However, most existing methods rely on low dynamic range (LDR) images, limiting their ability to capture detailed scenes in high-contrast environments. While some prior works address high dynamic range (HDR) scene reconstruction, they typically require multi-view sharp images with varying exposure times captured at fixed camera positions-a process that is time-consuming and impractical. To make data acquisition more flexible, we propose Casual3DHDR, a robust one-stage method that reconstructs 3D HDR scenes from casually-captured auto-exposure (AE) videos, even under severe motion blur and unknown, varying exposure times. Our approach integrates a continuous camera trajectory into a unified physical imaging model, jointly optimizing exposure times, camera poses, and the camera response function (CRF). Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate that Casual3DHDR outperforms existing methods in robustness and rendering quality.

2025 E-MoFlow: Learning Egomotion and Optical Flow from Event Data via Implicit Regularization
abstract
The estimation of optical flow and 6-DoF ego-motion—two fundamental tasks in 3-D vision—has typically been addressed independently. For neuromorphic vision (e.g., event cameras), however, the lack of robust data association makes solving the two problems separately an ill-posed challenge, especially in the absence of supervision via ground truth. Existing works mitigate this ill-posedness by either enforcing the smoothness of the flow field via an explicit variational regularizer or leveraging explicit structure-and-motion priors in the parametrization to improve event alignment. The former notably introduces bias in results and computational overhead, while the latter—which parametrizes the optical flow in terms of the scene depth and the camera motion—often converges to suboptimal local minima. To address these issues, we propose an unsupervised pipeline that jointly optimizes egomotion and flow via implicit spatial-temporal and geometric regularization. First, by modeling camera's egomotion as a continuous spline and optical flow as an implicit neural representation, our method inherently embeds spatial-temporal coherence through inductive biases. Second, we incorporate structure-and-motion priors through differential geometric constraints, bypassing explicit depth estimation while maintaining rigorous geometric consistency. As a result, our framework (called \textbf{E-MoFlow}) unifies egomotion and optical flow estimation via implicit regularization under a fully unsupervised paradigm. Experiments demonstrate its versatility to general 6-DoF motion scenarios, achieving state-of-the-art performance among unsupervised methods and competitive even with supervised approaches. Code will be released upon acceptance.

2025 SIU3R: Simultaneous Scene Understanding and 3D Reconstruction Beyond Feature Alignment
abstract
Simultaneous understanding and 3D reconstruction plays an important role in developing end-to-end embodied intelligent systems. To achieve this, recent approaches resort to 2D-to-3D feature alignment paradigm, which leads to limited 3D understanding capability and potential semantic information loss. In light of this, we propose SIU3R, the first alignment-free framework for generalizable simultaneous understanding and 3D reconstruction from unposed images. Specifically, SIU3R bridges reconstruction and understanding tasks via pixel-aligned 3D representation, and unifies multiple understanding tasks into a set of unified learnable queries, enabling native 3D understanding without the need of alignment with 2D models. To encourage collaboration between the two tasks with shared representation, we further conduct in-depth analyses of their mutual benefits, and propose two lightweight modules to facilitate their interaction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance not only on the individual tasks of 3D reconstruction and understanding, but also on the task of simultaneous understanding and 3D reconstruction, highlighting the advantages of our alignment-free framework and the effectiveness of the mutual benefit designs.

2025 MBA-SLAM: Motion Blur Aware Dense Visual SLAM With Radiance Fields Representation
abstract
Emerging 3D scene representations, such as Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), have demonstrated their effectiveness in Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) for photo-realistic rendering, particularly when using high-quality video sequences as input. However, existing methods struggle with motion-blurred frames, which are common in real-world scenarios like low-light or long-exposure conditions. This often results in a significant reduction in both camera localization accuracy and map reconstruction quality. To address this challenge, we propose a dense visual SLAM pipeline (i.e., MBA-SLAM) to handle severe motion-blurred inputs. Our approach integrates an efficient motion blur-aware tracker with either neural radiance fields or Gaussian Splatting based mapper. By accurately modeling the physical image formation process of motion-blurred images, our method simultaneously learns 3D scene representation and estimates the cameras' local trajectory during exposure time, enabling proactive compensation for motion blur caused by camera movement. In our experiments, we demonstrate that MBA-SLAM surpasses previous state-of-the-art methods in both camera localization and map reconstruction, showcasing superior performance across a range of datasets, including synthetic and real datasets featuring sharp images as well as those affected by motion blur, highlighting the versatility and robustness of our approach.

2025 Domain Adaptive Detection of MAVs: A Benchmark and Noise Suppression Network
abstract
Visual detection of Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) has attracted increasing attention in recent years due to its important application in various tasks. The existing methods for MAV detection assume that the training set and testing set have the same distribution. As a result, when deployed in new domains, the detectors would have a significant performance degradation due to domain discrepancy. In this paper, we study the problem of cross-domain MAV detection. The contributions of this paper are threefold. 1) We propose a Multi-MAV-Multi-Domain (M3D) dataset consisting of both simulation and realistic images. Compared to other existing datasets, the proposed one is more comprehensive in the sense that it covers rich scenes, diverse MAV types, and various viewing angles. A new benchmark for cross-domain MAV detection is proposed based on the proposed dataset. 2) We propose a Noise Suppression Network (NSN) based on the framework of pseudo-labeling and a large-to-small training procedure. To reduce the challenging pseudo-label noises, two novel modules are designed in this network. The first is a prior-based curriculum learning module for allocating adaptive thresholds for pseudo labels with different difficulties. The second is a masked copy-paste augmentation module for pasting truly-labeled MAVs on unlabeled target images and thus decreasing pseudo-label noises. 3) Extensive experimental results verify the superior performance of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art ones. In particular, it achieves mAP of 46.9%(+5.8%), 50.5%(+3.7%), and 61.5%(+11.3%) on the tasks of simulation-to-real adaptation, cross-scene adaptation, and cross-camera adaptation, respectively.Note to Practitioners— To study the cross-domain MAV detection problem, this paper establishes a novel benchmark that consists of three domain adaptation tasks: simulation-to-real adaptation, cross-scene adaptation, and cross-camera adaptation, respectively. The benchmark is based on a novel MAV dataset called Multi-MAV-Multi-Domain (M3D), which is available at: https://github.com/WestlakeAerialRobotics/M3D. To reduce the noises caused by pseudo labels, a noise suppression network is proposed to overcome the error accumulation. Extensive experiments are conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

2024 SCINeRF: Neural Radiance Fields from a Snapshot Compressive Image
abstract
In this paper, we explore the potential of Snapshot Compressive Imaging (SCI) technique for recovering the underlying 3D scene representation from a single temporal compressed image. SCI is a cost-effective method that enables the recording of high-dimensional data, such as hyperspectral or temporal information, into a single image using low- cost 2D imaging sensors. To achieve this, a series of specially designed 2D masks are usually employed, which not only reduces storage requirements but also offers potential privacy protection. Inspired by this, to take one step further, our approach builds upon the powerful 3D scene representation capabilities of neural radiance fields (NeRF). Specifically, we formulate the physical imaging process of SCI as part of the training of NeRF, allowing us to exploit its impressive performance in capturing complex scene structures. To assess the effectiveness of our method, we conduct extensive evaluations using both synthetic data and real data captured by our SCI system. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach sur- passes the state-of-the-art methods in terms of image re- construction and novel view image synthesis. Moreover, our method also exhibits the ability to restore high frame- rate multi-view consistent images by leveraging SCI and the rendering capabilities of NeRF. 2024 USB-NeRF: Unrolling Shutter Bundle Adjusted Neural Radiance Fields
abstract
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) has received much attention recently due to its impressive capability to represent 3D scene and synthesize novel view images. Existing works usually assume that the input images are captured by a global shutter camera. Thus, rolling shutter (RS) images cannot be trivially applied to an off-the-shelf NeRF algorithm for novel view synthesis. Rolling shutter effect would also affect the accuracy of the camera pose estimation (e.g. via COLMAP), which further prevents the success of NeRF algorithm with RS images. In this paper, we propose Unrolling Shutter Bundle Adjusted Neural Radiance Fields (USB-NeRF). USB-NeRF is able to correct rolling shutter distortions and recover accurate camera motion trajectory simultaneously under the framework of NeRF, by modeling the physical image formation process of a RS camera. Experimental results demonstrate that USB-NeRF achieves better performance compared to prior works, in terms of RS effect removal, novel view image synthesis as well as camera motion estimation. Furthermore, our algorithm can also be used to recover high-fidelity high frame-rate global shutter video from a sequence of RS images.

2024 DerainNeRF: 3D Scene Estimation with Adhesive Waterdrop Removal
abstract
When capturing images through the glass during rainy or snowy weather conditions, the resulting images often contain waterdrops adhered on the glass surface, and these waterdrops significantly degrade the image quality and performance of many computer vision algorithms. To tackle these limitations, we propose a method to reconstruct the clear 3D scene implicitly from multi-view images degraded by water-drops. Our method exploits an attention network to predict the location of waterdrops and then train a Neural Radiance Fields to recover the 3D scene implicitly. By leveraging the strong scene representation capabilities of NeRF, our method can render high-quality novel-view images with waterdrops removed. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real datasets show that our method is able to generate clear 3D scenes and outperforms existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) image adhesive waterdrop removal methods.

2024 DreamMesh4D: Video-to-4D Generation with Sparse-Controlled Gaussian-Mesh Hybrid Representation
abstract
Recent advancements in 2D/3D generative techniques have facilitated the generation of dynamic 3D objects from monocular videos. Previous methods mainly rely on the implicit neural radiance fields (NeRF) or explicit Gaussian Splatting as the underlying representation, and struggle to achieve satisfactory spatial-temporal consistency and surface appearance. Drawing inspiration from modern 3D animation pipelines, we introduce DreamMesh4D, a novel framework combining mesh representation with geometric skinning technique to generate high-quality 4D object from a monocular video. Instead of utilizing classical texture map for appearance, we bind Gaussian splats to triangle face of mesh for differentiable optimization of both the texture and mesh vertices. In particular, DreamMesh4D begins with a coarse mesh obtained through an image-to-3D generation procedure. Sparse points are then uniformly sampled across the mesh surface, and are used to build a deformation graph to drive the motion of the 3D object for the sake of computational efficiency and providing additional constraint. For each step, transformations of sparse control points are predicted using a deformation network, and the mesh vertices as well as the surface Gaussians are deformed via a novel geometric skinning algorithm. The skinning algorithm is a hybrid approach combining LBS (linear blending skinning) and DQS (dual-quaternion skinning), mitigating drawbacks associated with both approaches. The static surface Gaussians and mesh vertices as well as the dynamic deformation network are learned via reference view photometric loss, score distillation loss as well as other regularization losses in a two-stage manner. Extensive experiments demonstrate superior performance of our method in terms of both rendering quality and spatial-temporal consistency. Furthermore, our method is compatible with modern graphic pipelines, showcasing its potential in the 3D gaming and film industry.

2024 Keypoint-Guided Efficient Pose Estimation and Domain Adaptation for Micro Aerial Vehicles
abstract
Visual detection of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) is an important problem in many tasks such as vision-based swarming of MAVs. This paper studies vision-based 6D pose estimation to detect a 3D bounding box of a target MAV and then estimate its 3D position and 3D attitude. The 3D attitude information is critical to better estimate the target's velocity since the attitude and motion are dynamically coupled. In this paper, we propose a novel 6D pose estimation method, whose novelties are threefold. First, we propose a novel centroid point-guided keypoint localization network that outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. Second, while there are no publicly available real-world datasets for 6D pose estimation for MAVs up to now, we propose a high-quality dataset based on an automatic dataset collection method. Third, since the dataset is collected in an indoor environment but detection tasks are usually in outdoor environments, we propose a self-training-based unsupervised domain adaption method to transfer the method from indoor to outdoor. Finally, we show that the estimated 6D pose especially the 3D attitude can significantly help improve the target's velocity estimation.

2023 BAD-NeRF: Bundle Adjusted Deblur Neural Radiance Fields
abstract
Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have received considerable attention recently, due to its impressive capability in photo-realistic 3D reconstruction and novel view synthesis, given a set of posed camera images. Earlier work usually assumes the input images are of good quality. However, image degradation (e.g. image motion blur in low-light conditions) can easily happen in real-world scenarios, which would further affect the rendering quality of NeRF. In this paper, we present a novel bundle adjusted deblur Neural Radiance Fields (BAD-NeRF), which can be robust to severe motion blurred images and inaccurate camera poses. Our approach models the physical image formation process of a motion blurred image, and jointly learns the parameters of NeRF and recovers the camera motion trajectories during exposure time. In experiments, we show that by directly modeling the real physical image formation process, BADNeRF achieves superior performance over prior works on both synthetic and real datasets. 2021 MBA-VO: Motion Blur Aware Visual Odometry
abstract
Motion blur is one of the major challenges remaining for visual odometry methods. In low-light conditions where longer exposure times are necessary, motion blur can appear even for relatively slow camera motions. In this paper we present a novel hybrid visual odometry pipeline with direct approach that explicitly models and estimates the camera’s local trajectory within the exposure time. This allows us to actively compensate for any motion blur that occurs due to the camera motion. In addition, we also contribute a novel benchmarking dataset for motion blur aware visual odometry. In experiments we show that by directly modeling the image formation process, we are able to improve robustness of the visual odometry, while keeping comparable accuracy as that for images without motion blur. Both the code and the datasets can be found from https://github.com/ethliup/MBA-VO.

2020 Deep Shutter Unrolling Network
abstract
We present a novel network for rolling shutter effect correction. Our network takes two consecutive rolling shutter images and estimates the corresponding global shutter image of the latest frame. The dense displacement field from a rolling shutter image to its corresponding global shutter image is estimated via a motion estimation network. The learned feature representation of a rolling shutter image is then warped, via the displacement field, to its global shutter representation by a differentiable forward warping block. An image decoder recovers the global shutter image based on the warped feature representation. Our network can be trained end-to-end and only requires the global shutter image for supervision. Since there is no public dataset available, we also propose two large datasets: the Carla-RS dataset and the Fastec-RS dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We make both our code and datasets available at https://github.com/ethliup/DeepUnrollNet.

2019 Efficient 2D-3D Matching for Multi-Camera Visual Localization
abstract
Visual localization, i.e., determining the position and orientation of a vehicle with respect to a map, is a key problem in autonomous driving. We present a multi-camera visual inertial localization algorithm for large scale environments. To efficiently and effectively match features against a pre-built global 3D map, we propose a prioritized feature matching scheme for multi-camera systems. In contrast to existing works, designed for monocular cameras, we (1) tailor the prioritization function to the multi-camera setup and (2) run feature matching and pose estimation in parallel. This significantly accelerates the matching and pose estimation stages and allows us to dynamically adapt the matching efforts based on the surrounding environment. In addition, we show how pose priors can be integrated into the localization system to increase efficiency and robustness. Finally, we extend our algorithm by fusing the absolute pose estimates with motion estimates from a multi-camera visual inertial odometry pipeline (VIO). This results in a system that provides reliable and drift-less pose estimation. Extensive experiments show that our localization runs fast and robust under varying conditions, and that our extended algorithm enables reliable real-time pose estimation.

2019 Project AutoVision: Localization and 3D Scene Perception for an Autonomous Vehicle with a Multi-Camera System
abstract
Project AutoVision aims to develop localization and 3D scene perception capabilities for a self-driving vehicle. Such capabilities will enable autonomous navigation in urban and rural environments, in day and night, and with cameras as the only exteroceptive sensors. The sensor suite employs many cameras for both 360-degree coverage and accurate multi-view stereo; the use of low-cost cameras keeps the cost of this sensor suite to a minimum. In addition, the project seeks to extend the operating envelope to include GNSS-less conditions which are typical for environments with tall buildings, foliage, and tunnels. Emphasis is placed on leveraging multi-view geometry and deep learning to enable the vehicle to localize and perceive in 3D space. This paper presents an overview of the project, and describes the sensor suite and current progress in the areas of calibration, localization, and perception.

2018 Robust Dense Mapping for Large-Scale Dynamic Environments
abstract
We present a stereo-based dense mapping algorithm for large-scale dynamic urban environments. In contrast to other existing methods, we simultaneously reconstruct the static background, the moving objects, and the potentially moving but currently stationary objects separately, which is desirable for high-level mobile robotic tasks such as path planning in crowded environments. We use both instance-aware semantic segmentation and sparse scene flow to classify objects as either background, moving, or potentially moving, thereby ensuring that the system is able to model objects with the potential to transition from static to dynamic, such as parked cars. Given camera poses estimated from visual odometry, both the background and the (potentially) moving objects are reconstructed separately by fusing the depth maps computed from the stereo input. In addition to visual odometry, sparse scene flow is also used to estimate the 3D motions of the detected moving objects, in order to reconstruct them accurately. A map pruning technique is further developed to improve reconstruction accuracy and reduce memory consumption, leading to increased scalability. We evaluate our system thoroughly on the well-known KITTI dataset. Our system is capable of running on a PC at approximately 2.5Hz, with the primary bottleneck being the instance-aware semantic segmentation, which is a limitation we hope to address in future work. 2018 Towards Robust Visual Odometry with a Multi-Camera System
abstract
We present a visual odometry (VO) algorithm for a multi-camera system and robust operation in challenging environments. Our algorithm consists of a pose tracker and a local mapper. The tracker estimates the current pose by minimizing photometric errors between the most recent keyframe and the current frame. The mapper initializes the depths of all sampled feature points using plane-sweeping stereo. To reduce pose drift, a sliding window optimizer is used to refine poses and structure jointly. Our formulation is flexible enough to support an arbitrary number of stereo cameras. We evaluate our algorithm thoroughly on five datasets. The datasets were captured in different conditions: daytime, night-time with near-infrared (NIR) illumination and nighttime without NIR illumination. Experimental results show that a multi-camera setup makes the VO more robust to challenging environments, especially night-time conditions, in which a single stereo configuration fails easily due to the lack of features.

2017 Direct visual odometry for a fisheye-stereo camera
abstract
We present a direct visual odometry algorithm for a fisheye-stereo camera. Our algorithm performs simultaneous camera motion estimation and semi-dense reconstruction. The pipeline consists of two threads: a tracking thread and a mapping thread. In the tracking thread, we estimate the camera pose via semi-dense direct image alignment. To have a wider field of view (FoV) which is important for robotic perception, we use fisheye images directly without converting them to conventional pinhole images which come with a limited FoV. To address the epipolar curve problem, plane-sweeping stereo is used for stereo matching and depth initialization. Multiple depth hypotheses are tracked for selected pixels to better capture the uncertainty characteristics of stereo matching. Temporal motion stereo is then used to refine the depth and remove false positive depth hypotheses. Our implementation runs at an average of 20 Hz on a low-end PC. We run experiments in outdoor environments to validate our algorithm, and discuss the experimental results. We experimentally show that we are able to estimate 6D poses with low drift, and at the same time, do semi-dense 3D reconstruction with high accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, there is no other existing semi-dense direct visual odometry algorithm for a fisheye-stereo camera.
