2025 Addressing Context Awareness Requirements of IoT Systems: A Model-Driven Approach
abstract
Context awareness (CA) plays a crucial role in Internet of Things (IoT) systems, enabling them to dynamically adapt based on environmental, user, and system states. The elicitation, specification, and management of these CA requirements is challenging due to their inherent complexity, dependencies, and potential conflicts. Existing approaches primarily focus on runtime adaptations but lack structured methodologies for early-stage modelling and integration of CA requirements. This paper introduces a model-driven approach that systematically incorporates context awareness into the requirements engineering process. It leverages large language models (LLMs) for automated elicitation and classification of CA requirements, enabling the discovery of new adaptive services that emerge from system context awareness. Our work builds on the UCM4IoT requirements modelling language tailored for IoT systems. We also propose a domain-specific language, CARDML4IoT, for modelling and analysis of dependencies in CA requirements. Our proposed approach is demonstrated with a smart store system application.

2024 Requirements for modelling tools for teaching
abstract
Abstract Modelling is an important activity in software development and it is essential that students learn the relevant skills. Modelling relies on dedicated tools and these can be complex to install, configure, and use—distracting students from learning key modelling concepts and creating accidental complexity for teachers. To address these challenges, we believe that modelling tools specifically aimed at use in teaching are required. Based on discussions at a working session organised at MODELS 2023 and the results from an internationally shared questionnaire, we report on requirements for such modelling tools for teaching. We also present examples of existing modelling tools for teaching and how they address some of the requirements identified.

2018 Building domain-specific modelling environments with papyrus: an experience report
abstract
Domain-specific modelling with domain-specific languages (DSL) is rapidly gaining popularity in both research and industry for representing models of a target domain. However for a broader adoption, MDE tools need to provide adequate support for building these DSLs as well as for using the DSLs.

2016 A network service design and deployment process for NFV systems
abstract
Recently, the paradigm of Network Functions Virtualisation (NFV) has emerged for the rapid provisioning and management of network services. It is based on the cloud paradigm and the virtualisation technology. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has been actively defining the NFV framework, which includes several functional blocks for network service provisioning and management. The interfaces and the roles of these functional blocks are being defined as well as the artifacts they manipulate. However, the workflow defining the relations and dependencies between these different blocks as well as the successive processing of the artifacts throughout this workflow have not been specified. This is the purpose of this paper where we define an NFV standard compliant process for network service design and deployment. The process starts from the tenant network service requirements all the way to the network service deployment.

2009 Model transformation of dependability-focused requirements models
abstract
Recent research has focused on extending standard requirements elicitation processes to address potential abnormal situations that can interrupt normal system interaction at run-time. We proposed a process, DREP, that extends use case-driven modelling with elements that allow the modelling of system behaviour in exceptional situations. This paper discusses the challenge of using the notions of exceptional behaviour and outcomes defined in use cases within a MDE process. In order to create a more formal specification model with activity diagrams, the use cases have to be well-formed to begin with. We describe precise transformation rules to systematically create an activity diagram corresponding to each use case. Special stereotypes are introduced to document partial or degraded outcomes and handling activities. The model resulting from the transformation unambiguously specifies the system interactions required to satisfy the user, as well as exceptional interactions that can lead to degraded service provision.
