2000 Reduced-rank array processing for wireless communications with applications to IS-54/IS-136
abstract
We study the application of the eigencanceler, a reduced-rank method based on the eigendecomposition of the estimated covariance matrix, to the wireless communication problem. Simple closed-form bounds are obtained for the bit-error rate of binary phase-shift keying modulation in the presence of cochannel interference in systems using sample matrix inversion (SMI) and the eigencanceler. The application of SMI and the eigencanceler to a flat fading time-division multiple-access system is studied in the context of the IS-54/IS-136 standard. It is shown that adaptive antennas in conjunction with reduced-rank processing can be used to increase capacity of such systems by reducing the frequency reuse factor from 7 to 1.

2000 Exact bit-error probability for optimum combining with a Rayleigh fading Gaussian cochannel interferer
abstract
We derive expressions for the exact bit-error probability (BEP) for the detection of coherent binary phase-shift keying signals of the optimum combiner employing space diversity when both the desired signal and a Gaussian cochannel interferer are subject to flat Rayleigh fading. Two different methods are employed to reach two different, but numerically identical, expressions. With the direct method, the conditional BEP is averaged over the fading of both signal and interference, With the moment generating function based method, expressions are derived from an alternative representation of the Gaussian Q-function.

1998 Performance analysis of optimum combining in wireless communications with Rayleigh fading and cochannel interference
abstract
Optimum combining for space diversity reception is studied in digital cellular mobile radio communication systems with Rayleigh fading and multiple cochannel interferers. This paper considers binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation in a flat Rayleigh-fading environment when the number of interferences L is no less than the number of antenna elements N(L/spl ges/N). The approach of this paper and its main contribution is to carry out the analysis in a multivariate framework. Using this approach and with the assumption of equal-power interferers, it is shown that the probability density function of the maximum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) at the output of the optimum combiner has a Hotelling T/sup 2/ distribution. Closed form expressions using hypergeometric functions are derived for the outage probability and the average probability of bit error. Theoretical results are demonstrated by Monte Carlo simulations.

1997 Performance of Space-Time Receiver Architectures for CDMA Overlay of Narrowband Waveforms for Personal Communication Systems
abstract
This paper describes the performance analysis of a direct-sequence (DS) code-division multiple-access (CDMA) personal communication system (PCS) sharing a common spectrum with narrowband microwave radio links. Spatial and temporal processing are combined to improve the performance of the DS-CDMA system subject to narrowband interference. Degrees of freedom (DOF) provided by space-time (ST) optimum combining schemes are exploited to combat both fading and interference. The performance of several space-time receiver architectures is evaluated in terms of average bit error rate (BER) and it is investigated how this performance is influenced by various parameters.

1997 Bit Error Computations for Space-Time Narrowband Interference Suppression in CDMA Communications
abstract
Spatial and temporal processing are combined to suppress narrowband interference in CDMA communications. Space-time (ST) processing provides degrees of freedom (DOF) for both interference cancellation and diversity combining. Two ST receiver architectures, cascade and joint, are studied. The main contributions of the paper are the development of new analytical expressions of (1) the asymptotic efficiency of each method, (2) the probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) at the array output in a frequency selective Rayleigh fading environment, and (3) the average probability of bit error (BER) associated with each method.

1992 Multimedia over FDDI
abstract
Issues in multimedia networking over the fiber distributed data interface (FDDI) and simulation results demonstrating the feasibility of multimedia over FDDI are discussed. Previous work in this field has concentrated on the asynchronous channel in FDDI. Other examinations of the FDDI synchronous channel have applied bursty traffic to the synchronous channel. Multimedia traffic is typically stream oriented. The simulations reported were focused on simulating typical configurations with a range of applications and traffic models. The advantages of FDDI as an integrated voice/video data network are demonstrated.>
