| 2025 | TaDiCodec: Text-aware Diffusion Speech Tokenizer for Speech Language ModelingabstractSpeech tokenizers serve as foundational components for speech language models, yet current designs exhibit several limitations, including:
(1) dependence on multi-layer residual vector quantization structures or high frame rates,
(2) reliance on auxiliary pre-trained models for semantic distillation, and
(3) requirements for complex two-stage training processes.
In this work, we introduce the **T**ext-**a**ware **Di**ffusion Transformer Speech **Codec** (***TaDiCodec***), a novel approach designed to overcome these challenges.
TaDiCodec employs end-to-end optimization for quantization and reconstruction through a diffusion autoencoder, while integrating text guidance into the diffusion decoder to enhance reconstruction quality and achieve optimal compression.
TaDiCodec achieves an extremely low frame rate of **6.25 Hz** and a corresponding bitrate of **0.0875 kbps** with a **single-layer codebook** for 24 kHz speech,
while maintaining superior performance on critical speech generation evaluation metrics such as Word Error Rate (WER), speaker similarity (SIM), and speech quality (UTMOS),
Notably, TaDiCodec employs a single-stage, end-to-end training paradigm, and obviating the need for auxiliary pre-trained models.
We also validate the compatibility of TaDiCodec in language model based zero-shot text-to-speech with both autoregressive modeling and masked generative modeling, demonstrating its effectiveness and efficiency for speech language modeling, as well as a significantly small *reconstruction-generation gap*.
To facilitate reproducibility and further research, we will make our source code and pre-trained checkpoints publicly available.
Audio samples are are available at https://tadicodec.github.io/. We release code and model checkpoints at https://github.com/AmphionTeam/TaDiCodec. Yuancheng Wang, Dekun Chen, Xueyao Zhang, Junan Zhang, Jiaqi Li 0030, Zhizheng Wu 0001 |

| 2024 | An Initial Investigation of Neural Replay Simulator for Over-The-Air Adversarial Perturbations to Automatic Speaker VerificationabstractDeep Learning has advanced Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) in the past few years. Although it is known that deep learning-based ASV systems are vulnerable to adversarial examples in digital access, there are few studies on adversarial attacks in the context of physical access, where a replay process (i.e., over the air) is involved. An over-the-air attack involves a loudspeaker, a microphone, and a replaying environment that impacts the movement of the sound wave. Our initial experiment confirms that the replay process impacts the effectiveness of the over-the-air attack performance. This study performs an initial investigation towards utilizing a neural replay simulator to improve over-the-air adversarial attack robustness. This is achieved by using a neural waveform synthesizer to simulate the replay process when estimating the adversarial perturbations. Experiments conducted on the ASVspoof2019 dataset confirm that the neural replay simulator can considerably increase the success rates of over-the-air adversarial attacks. This raises the concern for adversarial attacks on speaker verification in physical access applications. Jiaqi Li 0030, Liumeng Xue, Zhizheng Wu 0001 |

| 2024 | ADVSV: An Over-the-Air Adversarial Attack Dataset for Speaker VerificationabstractIt is known that deep neural networks are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. Although Automatic Speaker Verification (ASV) built on top of deep neural networks exhibits robust performance in controlled scenarios, many studies confirm that ASV is vulnerable to adversarial attacks. The lack of a standard dataset is a bottleneck for further research, especially reproducible research. In this study, we developed an open-source adversarial attack dataset for speaker verification research. As an initial step, we focused on the over-the-air attack. An over-the-air adversarial attack involves a perturbation generation algorithm, a loudspeaker, a microphone, and an acoustic environment. The variations in the recording configurations make it very challenging to reproduce previous research. The AdvSV dataset is constructed using the Voxceleb1 Verification test set as its foundation. This dataset employs representative ASV models subjected to adversarial attacks and records adversarial samples to simulate over-the-air attack settings. The scope of the dataset can be easily extended to include more types of adversarial attacks. The dataset will be released to the public under the CC BY-SA 4.0. In addition, we also provide a detection baseline for reproducible research. Jiaqi Li 0030, Jiahao Zheng 0002, Chengfang Fang, Jie Shi 0005, Zhizheng Wu 0001 |

| 2024 | Emilia: An Extensive, Multilingual, and Diverse Speech Dataset For Large-Scale Speech GenerationabstractRecent advancements in speech generation models have been significantly driven by the use of large-scale training data. However, producing highly spontaneous, human-like speech remains a challenge due to the scarcity of large, diverse, and spontaneous speech datasets. In response, we introduce Emilia, the first large-scale, multilingual, and diverse speech generation dataset. Emilia starts with over 101k hours of speech across six languages, covering a wide range of speaking styles to enable more natural and spontaneous speech generation. To facilitate the scale-up of Emilia, we also present Emilia-Pipe, the first open-source preprocessing pipeline designed to efficiently transform raw, in-the-wild speech data into high-quality training data with speech annotations. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of both Emilia and Emilia-Pipe. Demos are available at: https://emilia-dataset.github.io/Emilia-Demo-Page/. | 2024 | Investigating Neural Audio Codecs For Speech Language Model-Based Speech GenerationabstractNeural audio codec tokens serve as the fundamental building blocks for speech language model (SLM)-based speech generation. However, there is no systematic understanding on how the codec system affects the speech generation performance of the SLM. In this work, we examine codec tokens within SLM framework for speech generation to provide insights for effective codec design. We retrain existing high-performing neural codec models on the same data set and loss functions to compare their performance in a uniform setting. We integrate codec tokens into two SLM systems: masked-based parallel speech generation system and an auto-regressive (AR) plus non-auto-regressive (NAR) model-based system. Our findings indicate that better speech reconstruction in codec systems does not guarantee improved speech generation in SLM. A high-quality codec decoder is crucial for natural speech production in SLM, while speech intelligibility depends more on quantization mechanism.
