2019 Vertica Flattened Tables and Live Aggregate Projections: A Column-based Alternative to Materialized Views for Analytics
abstract
Vertica is a column-oriented relational database management system built on massively parallel processing architecture. Rather than a traditional, monolithic implementation of materialized view, Vertica instead provides two separate features, flattened tables and live aggregation projections. These features not only support the basic functionality of materialized views, but also provide flexibility and consistency beyond the traditional materialized view implementation. Flattened tables contain denormalized columns whose main purpose is to materialize pre-computed joins with other tables. Live aggregate projections are an always up-to-date layer built on top of individual tables, including flattened tables, which maintain real-time summaries of table contents. This paper will present the main architecture of these two features, discuss how they differ from traditional materialized views, and how they take advantage of Vertica's architecture to achieve high performance. Experimental results with TPC-DS benchmarks will be provided to demonstrate the claimed performance benefit.

2018 Eon Mode: Bringing the Vertica Columnar Database to the Cloud
abstract
The Vertica Analytic Database is a powerful tool for high performance, large scale SQL analytics. Historically, Vertica has managed direct-attached disk for performance and reliability, at a cost of product complexity and scalability. Eon mode is a new architecture for Vertica that places the data on a reliable shared storage, matching the original architecture's performance on existing workloads and supporting new workloads. While the design reuses Vertica's optimizer and execution engine, the metadata, storage, and fault tolerance mechanisms are re-architected to enable and take advantage of shared storage. A sharding mechanism distributes load over the nodes while retaining the capability of running node-local table joins. Running on Amazon EC2 compute and S3 storage, Eon mode demonstrates good performance, superior scalability, and robust operational behavior. With these improvements, Vertica delivers on the promise of cloud economics, consuming only the compute and storage resources needed, while supporting efficient elasticity.

2014 The Vertica Query Optimizer: The case for specialized query optimizers
abstract
The Vertica SQL Query Optimizer was written from the ground up for the Vertica Analytic Database. Its design and the tradeoffs we encountered during its implementation argue that the full power of novel database systems can only be realized with a carefully crafted custom Query Optimizer written specifically for the system in which it operates.

2014 DBDesigner: A customizable physical design tool for Vertica Analytic Database
abstract
In this paper, we present Vertica's customizable physical design tool, called the DBDesigner (DBD), that produces designs optimized for various scenarios and applications. For a given workload and space budget, DBD automatically recommends a physical design that optimizes query performance, storage footprint, fault tolerance and recovery to meet different customer requirements. Vertica is a distributed, massively parallel columnar database that physically organizes data into projections. Projections are attribute subsets from one or more tables with tuples sorted by one or more attributes, that are replicated or segmented (distributed) on cluster nodes. The key challenges involved in projection design are picking appropriate column sets, sort orders, cluster data distributions and column encodings. To achieve the desired trade-off between query performance and storage footprint, DBD operates under three different design policies: (a) load-optimized, (b) query-optimized or (c) balanced. These policies indirectly control the number of projections proposed and queries optimized to achieve the desired balance. To cater to query workloads that evolve over time, DBD also operates in a comprehensive and incremental design mode. In addition, DBD lets users override specific features of projection design based on their intimate knowledge about the data and query workloads. We present the complete physical design algorithm, describing in detail how projection candidates are efficiently explored and evaluated using optimizer's cost and benefit model. Our experimental results show that DBD produces good physical designs that satisfy a variety of customer use cases.

2013 Adaptive Spatio-Temporal Exploratory Models: Hemisphere-wide species distributions from massively crowdsourced eBird data
abstract
Broad-scale spatiotemporal processes in conservation and sustainability science, such as continent-wide animal movement, occur across a range of spatial and temporal scales. Understanding these processes at multiple scales is crucial for developing and coordinating conservation strategies across national boundaries. In this paper we propose a general class of models we call AdaSTEM, for Adaptive Spatio-Temporal Exploratory Models, that are able to exploit variation in the density of observations while adapting to multiple scales in space and time. We show that this framework is able to efficiently discover multiscale structure when it is present, while retaining predictive performance when absent. We provide an empirical comparison and analysis, offer theoretical insights from the ensemble loss decomposition, and deploy AdaSTEM to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) across the Western Hemisphere using massively crowdsourced eBird data.

2013 Designing Query Optimizers for Big Data Problems of The Future
abstract
The Vertica SQL Query Optimizer was written from the ground up for the Vertica Analytic Database. Its design, and the tradeoffs we encountered during implementation, support the case that the full power of novel database systems can be realized only with a custom Query Optimizer, carefully crafted exclusively for the system in which it operates.
