2024 PubHubs identity management
abstract
Abstract Finding a combination between privacy and accountability in the online world is a challenge. Too little accountability supports problematic behaviour. Too little privacy undermines individual freedom and has a chilling effect. This paper describes the identity infrastructure of a new open source community platform called PubHubs. It combines local group conversations, via its own adaptation of Matrix, with proportional authentication of users, in local identity spaces. PubHubs thus achieves a combination of privacy and accountability. The technical core of the paper describes the cryptographic protocols for managing digital identities, via both personal attributes and local pseudonyms. Around this core, the roles of digital identities within the PubHubs platform are explained in functional terms, giving participants for instance more certainty about others in a conversation, or giving moderators new tools.

2020 A characterisation of ordered abstract probabilities
abstract
In computer science, especially when dealing with quantum computing or other non-standard models of computation, basic notions in probability theory like "a predicate" vary wildly. There seems to be one constant: the only useful example of an algebra of probabilities is the real unit interval. In this paper we try to explain this phenomenon. We will show that the structure of the real unit interval naturally arises from a few reasonable assumptions. We do this by studying effect monoids, an abstraction of the algebraic structure of the real unit interval: it has an addition x + y which is only defined when x + y ≤ 1 and an involution x~1 -- x which make it an effect algebra, in combination with an associative (possibly non-commutative) multiplication. Examples include the unit intervals of ordered rings and Boolean algebras.

2020 Distances between States and between Predicates
abstract
This paper gives a systematic account of various metrics on probability distributions (states) and on predicates. These metrics are described in a uniform manner using the validity relation between states and predicates. The standard adjunction between convex sets (of states) and effect modules (of predicates) is restricted to convex complete metric spaces and directed complete effect modules. This adjunction is used in two state-and-effect triangles, for classical (discrete) probability and for quantum probability.

2017 Statman's Hierarchy Theorem
abstract
In the Simply Typed $\lambda$-calculus Statman investigates the reducibility relation $\leq_{\beta\eta}$ between types: for $A,B \in \mathbb{T}^0$, types freely generated using $\rightarrow$ and a single ground type $0$, define $A \leq_{\beta\eta} B$ if there exists a $\lambda$-definable injection from the closed terms of type $A$ into those of type $B$. Unexpectedly, the induced partial order is the (linear) well-ordering (of order type) $\omega + 4$. In the proof a finer relation $\leq_{h}$ is used, where the above injection is required to be a B\"ohm transformation, and an (a posteriori) coarser relation $\leq_{h^+}$, requiring a finite family of B\"ohm transformations that is jointly injective. We present this result in a self-contained, syntactic, constructive and simplified manner. En route similar results for $\leq_h$ (order type $\omega + 5$) and $\leq_{h^+}$ (order type $8$) are obtained. Five of the equivalence classes of $\leq_{h^+}$ correspond to canonical term models of Statman, one to the trivial term model collapsing all elements of the same type, and one does not even form a model by the lack of closed terms of many types.
