| 2019 | Truncated Cauchy Non-Negative Matrix FactorizationabstractNon-negative matrix factorization (NMF) minimizes the euclidean distance between the data matrix and its low rank approximation, and it fails when applied to corrupted data because the loss function is sensitive to outliers. In this paper, we propose a Truncated CauchyNMF loss that handle outliers by truncating large errors, and develop a Truncated CauchyNMF to robustly learn the subspace on noisy datasets contaminated by outliers. We theoretically analyze the robustness of Truncated CauchyNMF comparing with the competing models and theoretically prove that Truncated CauchyNMF has a generalization bound which converges at a rate of order , where is the sample size. We evaluate Truncated CauchyNMF by image clustering on both simulated and real datasets. The experimental results on the datasets containing gross corruptions validate the effectiveness and robustness of Truncated CauchyNMF for learning robust subspaces. | 2015 | Layer-Specific Adaptive Learning Rates for Deep NetworksabstractThe increasing complexity of deep learning architectures is resulting in training time requiring weeks or even months. This slow training is due in part to "vanishing gradients," in which the gradients used by back-propagation are extremely large for weights connecting deep layers (layers near the output layer), and extremely small for shallow layers (near the input layer), this results in slow learning in the shallow layers. Additionally, it has also been shown that in highly non-convex problems, such as deep neural networks, there is a proliferation of high-error low curvature saddle points, which slows down learning dramatically [1]. In this paper, we attempt to overcome the two above problems by proposing an optimization method for training deep neural networks which uses learning rates which are both specific to each layer in the network and adaptive to the curvature of the function, increasing the learning rate at low curvature points. This enables us to speed up learning in the shallow layers of the network and quickly escape high-error low curvature saddle points. We test our method on standard image classification datasets such as MNIST, CIFAR10 and ImageNet, and demonstrate that our method increases accuracy as well as reduces the required training time over standard algorithms. | 2014 | Learning Low-Rank Representations with Classwise Block-Diagonal Structure for Robust Face RecognitionabstractFace recognition has been widely studied due to its importance in various applications. However, the case that both training images and testing images are corrupted is not well addressed. Motivated by the success of low-rank matrix recovery, we propose a novel semi-supervised low-rank matrix recovery algorithm for robust face recognition. The proposed method can learn robust discriminative representations for both training images and testing images simultaneously by exploiting the classwise block-diagonal structure. Specifically, low-rank matrix approximation can handle the possible contamination of data. Moreover, the classwise block-diagonal structure is exploited to promote discrimination of representations for robust recognition. The above issues are formulated into a unified objective function and we design an efficient optimization procedure based on augmented Lagrange multiplier method to solve it. Extensive experiments on three public databases are performed to validate the effectiveness of our approach. The strong identification capability of representations with block-diagonal structure is verified. Yong Li 0034, Jing Liu 0001, Zechao Li, Yangmuzi Zhang, Hanqing Lu, Songde Ma |

| 2013 | Discriminative Tensor Sparse Coding for Image ClassificationabstractA novel approach to learn a discriminative dictionary over a tensor sparse model is presented. A structural incoherence constraint between dictionary atoms from different classes is introduced to promote discriminating information into the dictionary. The incoherence term encourages dictionary atoms to be as independent as possible. In addition, we incorporate classification error into the objective function of dictionary learning. The dictionary is learned in a supervised setting to make it useful for classification. A linear multi-class classifier and the dictionary are learned simultaneously during the training phase. Our approach is evaluated on three types of public databases, including texture, digit, and face databases. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. 1 Yangmuzi Zhang, Zhuolin Jiang, Larry Davis 0001 |

| 2013 | Learning Structured Low-Rank Representations for Image ClassificationabstractAn approach to learn a structured low-rank representation for image classification is presented. We use a supervised learning method to construct a discriminative and reconstructive dictionary. By introducing an ideal regularization term, we perform low-rank matrix recovery for contaminated training data from all categories simultaneously without losing structural information. A discriminative low-rank representation for images with respect to the constructed dictionary is obtained. With semantic structure information and strong identification capability, this representation is good for classification tasks even using a simple linear multi-classifier. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. Yangmuzi Zhang, Zhuolin Jiang, Larry Davis 0001 |
