| 2024 | How do visualizations and automated personalized feedback engage professional learners in a Learning Analytics Dashboard?abstractLearning Analytics Dashboards (LAD) are the subject of research in a multitude of schools and higher education institutions, but a lack of research into learner-facing dashboards in professional learning has been identified. This study took place in an authentic professional learning context and aims to contribute insights into LAD design by using an academic approach in a practice-based environment. An existing storytelling LAD created to support 81 accountants was evaluated using Technology Acceptance Model, finding a learner expectation for clarity, conciseness, understanding and guidance on next steps. High usage levels and a ‘take what you need’ approach was identified, with all visualizations and automated personalized feedback being considered useful although to varying degrees. Professional learners in this study focus on understanding and acting upon weaknesses rather than celebrating strengths. The lessons for LAD design are to offer choice and create elements which support learners to take action to improve performance at a multitude of time points and levels of success. | 2022 | Virtual Museum Tours for Schools: Teachers' Experiences and ExpectationsabstractStudents have always been main targets for museums with clear learning strategies between schools and museums that contribute to a reinforced student learning experience. Although several museums offer virtual experiences (also available for schools), these cannot be easily manipulated or combined with other resources to form curriculum-focused learning activities. This study aims to explore the views and expectations of teachers on the use of Virtual Museum Tours (VMT) in their classrooms. Main findings from an online survey with 101 teachers (with or without VMT experience) shed light on their motivations and challenges when engaging their classrooms in such activities. Statistical analysis and visualisations were used to present teachers’ experiences and expectations, and a binary logistic regression analysis was employed to indicate the factors that associate with teachers’ decision to join VMTs in their classrooms. This study’s observations have implications for the design of customisable VMTs for schools, for how museums develop VMTs that facilitate school participation, and how game designers develop virtual gaming apps used in formal education settings. | 2019 | Inquiry learning at scale: pedagogy-informed design of a platform for citizen inquiryabstractThis paper addresses the related issues of which pedagogies improve with scale and how to develop a novel platform for inquiry-led learning at scale. The paper begins by introducing pedagogy-informed design of platforms for learning at scale. It then summarizes previous work to develop a platform for open science investigations. Then, it introduces a new platform for inquiry-led learning at scale. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the effectiveness of the platform to: meet its design requirements; enable individuals, groups and institutions to design inquiry-led investigations; engage members of the public to participate; and enable learning activities on the platform to sustain and grow. | 2015 | Weather-it Missions: A Social Network Analysis Perspective of an Online Citizen Inquiry CommunityabstractCitizen inquiry is an innovative informal science learning approach, which engages members of the general public in scientific investigations sparked by their personal experience of everyday science, and to which other members can contribute. This paper aims to describe the network of interactions and contributions of Weather-it, an online Citizen Inquiry community accommodated by the nQuire-it platform, which involves people in creating and maintaining their own weather missions (investigations). The interaction patterns within Weather-it are mainly explored through social network analysis of community members and missions. The results indicate the quiet and active members within the community, their splitting into sub-communities, and their contribution and data collection methods and preferences. These results provide insight into the behaviour of people in such public engagement projects. Maria Aristeidou, Eileen Scanlon, Mike Sharples |
