2025 A Robust Phase Mapping Approach Using the Mahalanobis-Wasserstein Distance*
abstract
The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into low-voltage (LV) distribution grids poses significant challenges for grid management, particularly regarding the need for accurate information on the connection phases of installations to ensure proper load balancing and to enhance hosting capacity. This paper presents a novel voltage-based phase mapping approach using the Mahalanobis-Wasserstein (MW) distance — a metric that exploits voltage time series data to accurately assign users to their corresponding phases without requiring additional hardware or prior knowledge of the grid’s topology. The proposed method demonstrates strong resilience to missing data, a frequent issue in real-world deployments, and incorporates a confidence score to quantify the reliability of the phase assignments.

2021 Statistically Robust Evaluation of Stream-Based Recommender Systems
abstract
Online incremental models for recommendation are nowadays pervasive in both the industry and the academia. However, there is not yet a standard evaluation methodology for the algorithms that maintain such models. Moreover, online evaluation methodologies available in the literature generally fall short on the statistical validation of results, since this validation is not trivially applicable to stream-based algorithms. We propose ak-fold validation framework for the pairwise comparison of recommendation algorithms that learn from user feedback streams, using prequential evaluation. Our proposal enables continuous statistical testing on adaptive-size sliding windows over the outcome of the prequential process, allowing practitioners and researchers to make decisions in real time based on solid statistical evidence. We present a set of experiments to gain insights on the sensitivity and robustness of two statistical tests-McNemar's and Wilcoxon signed rank-in a streaming data environment. Our results show that besides allowing a real-time, fine-grained online assessment, the online versions of the statistical tests are at least as robust as the batch versions, and definitely more robust than a simple prequential single-fold approach.

2016 The Extraction from News Stories a Causal Topic Centred Bayesian Graph for Sugarcane
abstract
Sugarcane is an important product to the Brazilian economy because it is the primary ingredient of ethanol which is used as a gasoline substitute. Sugarcane is affected by many factors which can be modelled in a Bayesian Graph. This paper describes a technique to build a Causal Bayesian Network from information in news stories. The technique: extracts causal relations from news stories, converts them into an event graph, removes irrelevant information, solves structure problems, and clusters the event graph by topic distribution. Finally, the paper describes a method for generating inferences from the graph based upon evidence in agricultural news stories. The graph is evaluated through a manual inspection and with a comparison with the EMBRAPA sugarcane taxonomy.
