| 2025 | Joint Transmitter and Receiver Precoding for Frequency-Selective Sub-Band Full-Duplex SystemsabstractTo address the demands of improved uplink (UL) coverage and low latency, an enhanced duplex scheme, termed sub-band full-duplex (SBFD), has been proposed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project. By dividing the conventional time-division duplex (TDD) band into non-overlapping UL and downlink (DL) subbands, SBFD combines the advantages of both TDD and frequency-division duplex. However, system performance is significantly affected by self-interference (SI) in SBFD. In this paper, the SI is modeled as a combination of transmitter (Tx) leakage and receiver (Rx) selectivity to better characterize its spatial properties. Based on this model, we propose a joint Tx and Rx precoding design for self-interference cancellation (SIC) in frequency-selective SBFD multiple-input multiple-output systems. The proposed joint design performs SIC based on multiple subbands. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces SI, enhances UL performance to near interference-free ideal scenarios, and minimizes DL performance degradation. | 2025 | Fairness on Principal Stratum: A New Perspective on Counterfactual FairnessabstractFairness in human and algorithmic decision-making is crucial in areas such as criminal justice, education, and social welfare. Recently, counterfactual fairness has drawn increasing research interest, suggesting that decision-making for individuals should remain the same when intervening with different values on protected attributes. Nevertheless, the question of "which attributes and individuals should be protected" is rarely discussed in the existing counterfactual fairness literature. For example, when considering leg disability as a protected attribute, the algorithms should not treat individuals with leg disabilities differently in college admissions, but one may naturally consider this factor when selecting runner athletes. In other words, when and how to enforce fairness is expected to depend on the causal relation between the protected attribute and the outcome of interest. Formally, this paper proposes principal counterfactual fairness using the concept of principal stratification from the causal inference literature, focusing on whether an algorithm is counterfactually fair for individuals whose protected attribute has no individual causal effect on the outcome of interest. To examine whether an algorithm satisfies principal counterfactual fairness, we derive the statistical bounds and propose a post-processing approach to achieving principal counterfactual fairness with minimal individual decision changes. Experiments are conducted using synthetic and real-world datasets to verify the effectiveness of our methods. | 2024 | Robust 3D Face Alignment with Multi-Path Neural Architecture Searchabstract3D face alignment is a very challenging and fundamental problem in computer vision. Existing deep learning-based methods manually design different networks to regress either parameters of a 3D face model or 3D positions of face vertices. However, designing such networks relies on expert knowledge, and these methods often struggle to produce consistent results across various face poses. To address this limitation, we employ Neural Architecture Search (NAS) to automatically discover the optimal architecture for 3D face alignment. We propose a novel Multi-path One-shot Neural Architecture Search (MONAS) framework that leverages multi-scale features and contextual information to enhance face alignment across various poses. The MONAS comprises two key algorithms: Multi-path Networks Unbiased Sampling Based Training and Simulated Annealing based Multi-path One-shot Search. Experimental results on three popular benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of the MONAS for both sparse alignment and dense alignment. | 2021 | Dual Attentive Sequential Learning for Cross-Domain Click-Through Rate PredictionabstractCross domain recommender system constitutes a powerful method to tackle the cold-start and sparsity problem by aggregating and transferring user preferences across multiple category domains. Therefore, it has great potential to improve click-through-rate prediction performance in online commerce platforms having many domains of products. While several cross domain sequential recommendation models have been proposed to leverage information from a source domain to improve CTR predictions in a target domain, they did not take into account bidirectional latent relations of user preferences across source-target domain pairs. As such, they cannot provide enhanced cross-domain CTR predictions for both domains simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to cross-domain sequential recommendations based on the dual learning mechanism that simultaneously transfers information between two related domains in an iterative manner until the learning process stabilizes. In particular, the proposed Dual Attentive Sequential Learning (DASL) model consists of two novel components Dual Embedding and Dual Attention, which jointly establish the two-stage learning process: we first construct dual latent embeddings that extract user preferences in both domains simultaneously, and subsequently provide cross-domain recommendations by matching the extracted latent embeddings with candidate items through dual-attention learning mechanism. We conduct extensive offline experiments on three real-world datasets to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model, which significantly and consistently outperforms several state-of-the-art baselines across all experimental settings. We also conduct an online A/B test at a major video streaming platform Alibaba-Youku, where our proposed model significantly improves business performance over the latest production system in the company. | 2020 | PURS: Personalized Unexpected Recommender System for Improving User SatisfactionabstractClassical recommender system methods typically face the filter bubble problem when users only receive recommendations of their familiar items, making them bored and dissatisfied. To address the filter bubble problem, unexpected recommendations have been proposed to recommend items significantly deviating from user’s prior expectations and thus surprising them by presenting ”fresh” and previously unexplored items to the users. In this paper, we describe a novel Personalized Unexpected Recommender System (PURS) model that incorporates unexpectedness into the recommendation process by providing multi-cluster modeling of user interests in the latent space and personalized unexpectedness via the self-attention mechanism and via selection of an appropriate unexpected activation function. Extensive offline experiments on three real-world datasets illustrate that the proposed PURS model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art baseline approaches in terms of both accuracy and unexpectedness measures. In addition, we conduct an online A/B test at a major video platform Alibaba-Youku, where our model achieves over 3% increase in the average video view per user metric. The proposed model is in the process of being deployed by the company. Pan Li 0008, Maofei Que, Zhichao Jiang, Yao Hu 0002, Alexander Tuzhilin |

| 2017 | Novel human microbe-disease association prediction using network consistency projectionabstractBACKGROUND: Accumulating biological and clinical reports have indicated that imbalance of microbial community is closely associated with occurrence and development of various complex human diseases. Identifying potential microbe-disease associations, which could provide better understanding of disease pathology and further boost disease diagnostic and prognostic, has attracted more and more attention. However, hardly any computational models have been developed for large scale microbe-disease association prediction. RESULTS: In this article, based on the assumption that microbes with similar functions tend to share similar association or non-association patterns with similar diseases and vice versa, we proposed the model of Network Consistency Projection for Human Microbe-Disease Association prediction (NCPHMDA) by integrating known microbe-disease associations and Gaussian interaction profile kernel similarity for microbes and diseases. NCPHMDA yielded outstanding AUCs of 0.9039, 0.7953 and average AUC of 0.8918 in global leave-one-out cross validation, local leave-one-out cross validation and 5-fold cross validation, respectively. Furthermore, colon cancer, asthma and type 2 diabetes were taken as independent case studies, where 9, 9 and 8 out of the top 10 predicted microbes were successfully confirmed by recent published clinical literature. CONCLUSION: NCPHMDA is a non-parametric universal network-based method which can simultaneously predict associated microbes for investigated diseases but does not require negative samples. It is anticipated that NCPHMDA would become an effective biological resource for clinical experimental guidance. Wenzheng Bao, Zhichao Jiang, De-Shuang Huang |
