| 2022 | Leveraging the Layered Architecture for Microservice RecoveryabstractThe microservice-oriented architecture (MSA) is an architectural style which involves organizing an application as of small independent services, each oriented towards one business functionality while being data autonomous. In pursuit of modernizing their software to take advantage of the Cloud, companies have been eager to migrate their monolithic legacy software towards an MSA. This migration necessitates an identification phase to reorganize classes around the monolith’s functionalities as a set of microservice candidates. However, most identification approaches fail to utilize the monolith’s internal multilayered architecture to identify those functionalities, and thus the microservices. As a consequence, ignoring the internal multilayered architecture increases the risk of identifying microservice by their technical layer which is recognized as a conceptual anti-pattern. In this paper, we explore the impact of the multi-layer architecture in monolithic applications during the identification to develop a semi-automatic approach that relies on it to identify an MSA. Particularly, we analyze the presentation layer to determine the endpoints of each business functionality of the monolith. From these endpoints, we apply a vertical decomposition to identify the necessary classes to implement each feature as a microservice. In the process, we also define the bounded context of each microservice during the vertical decomposition of the data-access layer. For the evaluation, we implemented a model-driven process and applied it on a set of varying open-source applications commonly used in the literature. We compared the results of approach with and without the reverse-engineering of the internal architecture to measure the impact of our approach on the identification of quality microservices. Using decomposition metrics (e.g., MoJoFM, c2ccvg), we were able to measure a significant positive impact. | 2021 | Migrating GUI behavior: from GWT to AngularabstractIn a collaboration with Berger-Levrault, a major IT company, we are working on the migration of GWT applications to Angular. We focus on the GUI aspect of this migration which requires a framework switch (GWT to Angular) and a programming language switch (Java to TypeScript). Previous work identified that the GUI can be split into the UI structure and the GUI behavioral code. GUI behavioral code is the code executed when the user interacts with the UI. Although the migration of UI structure has already been studied, the migration of the GUI behavioral code has not. To help developers during the migration of their applications, we propose a generic approach in four steps that uses a meta-model to represent the GUI behavioral code. This approach includes a separation of the GUI behavioral code into events (caller code) and the code executed when an event is fired (called code). We present the approach and its implementation for a real industrial case study. The application comprises 470 Java (GWT) classes representing 56 web pages. We give examples of the migrated code. We evaluate the quality of the generated code with standard tools (SonarQube, codelizer) and compare it to another Java to TypeScript converter. The results show that our code has 53% fewer warnings and rule violations for SonarQube, and 99% fewer for codelizer. | 2019 | GUI Migration using MDE from GWT to Angular 6: An Industrial CaseabstractDuring the evolution of an application, it happens that developers must change the programming language. In the context of a collaboration with Berger-Levrault, a major IT company, we are working on the migration of a GWT application to Angular. We focus on the GUI aspect of this migration which, even if both frameworks are web Graphical User Interface (GUI) frameworks, is made difficult because they use different programming languages and different organization schema. Such migration is complicated by the fact that the new application must be able to mimic closely the visual aspect of the old one so that the users of the application are not disrupted. We propose an approach in four steps that uses a meta-model to represent the GUI at a high abstraction level. We evaluated this approach on an application comprising 470 Java (GWT) classes representing 56 pages. We are able to model all the web pages of the application and 93% of the widgets they contain, and we successfully migrated 26 out of 39 pages (66%). We give examples of the migrated pages, both successful and not. Benoît Verhaeghe, Anne Etien, Nicolas Anquetil, Abderrahmane Seriai, Laurent Deruelle, Stéphane Ducasse, Mustapha Derras |

| 2014 | Validation of Software Visualization Tools: A Systematic Mapping StudyabstractSoftware visualization as a research field focuses on the visualization of the structure, behavior, and evolution of software. It studies techniques and methods for graphically representing these different aspects of software. Interest in software visualization has grown in recent years, producing rapid advances in the diversity of research and in the scope of proposed techniques, and aiding the application experts who use these techniques to advance their own research. Despite the importance of evaluating software visualization research, there is little work studying validation methods. As a consequence, it is usually difficult producing compelling evidence about the effectiveness of software visualization contributions. The goal of this paper is to study the validation techniques performed in the software visualization literature. We conducted a systematic mapping study of validation methods in software visualization. We consider 752 articles from multiple sources, published between 2000 and 2012, and study the validation techniques of the software visualization articles. The main outcome of this study is the lack in rigor when validating software visualization tool and techniques. Although software visualization has grown in interest in the last decade, it still lacks the necessary maturity to be properly and thoroughly evaluating its claims. Most article evaluations studied in this paper are qualitative case studies, including discussions about the benefits of the proposed visualizations. The results help understand the needs in software visualization validation techniques. They identify the type of evaluations that should be performed to address this deficiency. The specific analysis of SOFTVIS series articles shows that the specialized conference suffers from the same shortage. Abderrahmane Seriai, Omar Benomar, Benjamin Cerat, Houari Sahraoui |

| 2014 | Deriving Component Interfaces after a Restructuring of a Legacy SystemabstractAlthough there are contributions on component-oriented languages, components are mostly implemented using object-oriented (OO) languages. In this perspective, a component corresponds to a set of classes that work together to provide one or more services. Services are grouped together in interfaces that are each implemented by a class. Thus, dependencies between components are defined using the semantic of the enclosed classes, which is mostly structural. This makes it difficult to understand an architecture described with such links. Indeed, at an architectural level dependencies between components must represent functional aspects. This problem is worse, when the components are obtained by re-engineering of legacy OO systems. Indeed, in this case the obtained components are mainly based on the consistency of the grouping logic. So, in this paper we propose an approach to identify the interfaces of a component according to its interactions with the other components. To this end, we use formal concept analysis. The evaluation of the proposed approach via an empirical study showed that the identified interfaces overall correspond to the different functional aspects of the components.
