2026 SkMTEB: Slovak Massive Text Embedding Benchmark and Model Adaptation
abstract
We introduce SkMTEB, the first comprehensive MTEB-style text embedding benchmark for Slovak, a low-resource West Slavic language, comprising 31 datasets across 7 task types-nearly 4× the depth of existing multilingual benchmark coverage for Slovak. Our evaluation of 31 embedding models reveals that large instruction-tuned multilingual models achieve the strongest performance, while existing Slovak-specific models trained for NLU tasks transfer poorly to embedding tasks. To address the need for efficient, locally-deployable Slovak embeddings, we develop e5-sk-small (45M parameters) and e5-sk-large (365M) by applying vocabulary trimming and finetuning to Multilingual E5 models.Despite size reductions of up to 62%, our open-source models achieve competitive performance with proprietary APIs while remaining locally deployable for semantic search and retrievalaugmented generation (RAG).We release the benchmark, models, datasets, and code openly, hoping our approach offers a replicable path for other under-resourced languages.

2026 SloPal: A 60-Million-Word Slovak Parliamentary Corpus with Aligned Speech and Fine-Tuned ASR Models
abstract
Slovak remains a low-resource language for automatic speech recognition (ASR), with fewer than 100 hours of publicly available training data. We present SloPal, a comprehensive Slovak parliamentary corpus comprising 330,000 speaker-segmented transcripts (66 million words, 220 million tokens) spanning 2001--2024, with rich metadata including speaker names, roles, and session information. From this collection, we derive SloPalSpeech, a 2,806-hour aligned speech dataset with segments up to 30 seconds, constructed using a language-agnostic anchor-based alignment pipeline and optimized for Whisper-based ASR training. Fine-tuning Whisper on SloPalSpeech reduces Word Error Rate (WER) by up to 70\%, with the fine-tuned small model (244M parameters) approaching base large-v3 (1.5B parameters) performance at 6$\times$ fewer parameters. We publicly release the SloPal text corpus, SloPalSpeech aligned audio, and four fine-tuned Whisper models at https://huggingface.co/collections/NaiveNeuron/slopal, providing the most comprehensive open Slovak parliamentary language resource to date.

2025 Trojsten Benchmark: Evaluating LLM Problem-Solving in Slovak STEM Competition Problems
abstract
Large language models show promising performance on reasoning tasks, yet evaluation methods for low-resource languages remain limited, particularly for complex STEM problemsolving. We introduce Trojsten Benchmark, a Slovak-language dataset of 1,108 high-school competition problems with reference solutions across mathematics, physics, and programming, and a rubric-based LLM grading framework.Using GPT-4 to generate rubrics and grade solutions, we observe 1.05 average absolute deviation from human graders (5-point scale), while benchmarking GPT-3.5-Turbo,GPT-4, GPT-4o, and open-weight models (Llama 3, Phi-3).We quantify multistep reasoning performance by difficulty, show consistent underperformance on harder items, and demonstrate language sensitivity: accuracy drops on English translations of Slovak statements, evidencing challenges beyond translation.Trojsten Benchmark complements English-centric math datasets (e.g., MATH, GSM8K) by targeting open-response, rubric-gradable reasoning under low-resource linguistic framing. We release code and data to enable reproducible evaluation and humanaligned auto-grading for STEM in under-served languages.

2024 SlovakSum: A Large Scale Slovak Summarization Dataset
abstract
The ability to automatically summarize news articles has become increasingly important due to the vast amount of information available online. Together with the rise of chatbots , Natural Language Processing (NLP) has recently experienced a tremendous amount of development. Despite these advancements, the majority of research is focused on established well-resourced languages, such as English. To contribute to development of the low resource Slovak language, we introduce SlovakSum, a Slovak news summarization dataset consisting of over 200 thousand news articles with titles and short abstracts obtained from multiple Slovak newspapers. The abstractive approach, including MBART and mT5 models, was used to evaluate various baselines. The code for the reproduction of our dataset and experiments can be found at https://github.com/NaiveNeuron/slovaksum

2021 TermAdventure: Interactively Teaching UNIX Command Line, Text Adventure Style
abstract
Introductory UNIX courses are typically organized as lectures, accompanied by a set of exercises, whose solutions are submitted to and reviewed by the lecturers. While this arrangement has become standard practice, it often requires the use of an external tool or interface for submission and does not automatically check its correctness. That in turn leads to increased workload and makes it difficult to deal with potential plagiarism.

2020 A Summarization Dataset of Slovak News Articles
abstract
As a well established NLP task, single-document summarization has seen significant interest in the past few years. However, most of the work has been done on English datasets. This is particularly noticeable in the context of evaluation where the dominant ROUGE metric assumes its input to be written in English. In this paper we aim to address both of these issues by introducing a summarization dataset of articles from a popular Slovak news site and proposing small adaptation to the ROUGE metric that make it better suited for Slovak texts. Several baselines are evaluated on the dataset, including an extractive approach based on the Multilingual version of the BERT architecture. To the best of our knowledge, the presented dataset is the first large-scale news-based summarization dataset for text written in Slovak language. It can be reproduced using the utilities available at https://github.com/NaiveNeuron/sme-sum
