| 2026 | One-Shot Refiner: Boosting Feed-forward Novel View Synthesis via One-Step DiffusionabstractWe present a novel framework for high-fidelity novel view synthesis (NVS) from sparse images, addressing key limitations in recent feed-forward 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) methods built on Vision Transformer (ViT) backbones. While ViT-based pipelines offer strong geometric priors, they are often constrained by low-resolution inputs due to computational costs. Moreover, existing generative enhancement methods tend to be 3D-agnostic, resulting in inconsistent structures across views, especially in unseen regions. To overcome these challenges, we design a Dual-Domain Detail Perception Module, which enables handling high-resolution images without being limited by the ViT backbone, and endows Gaussians with additional features to store high-frequency details. We develop a feature-guided diffusion network, which can preserve high-frequency details during the restoration process. We introduce a unified training strategy that enables joint optimization of the ViT-based geometric backbone and the diffusion-based refinement module. Experiments demonstrate that our method can maintain superior generation quality across multiple datasets. Yitong Dong, Minchao Jiang, Qingnan Fan, Huaqi Zhang, Hujun Bao, Guofeng Zhang 0001 |

| 2026 | Tuning-Free Adaptive Style Incorporation for Structure-Consistent Text-Driven Style TransferabstractText-driven style transfer methods leveraging diffusion models have shown impressive creativity, yet they still face challenges in maintaining consistent structure and content preservation. Existing methods often directly concatenate the content and style prompts for a prompt-level style injection. However, this coarse-grained style injection strategy inevitably leads to structural deviations in the stylized images. This poses a significant obstacle for professional artists and creators seeking precise artistic editing. In this work, we strive to attain a harmonious balance between content preservation and style transformation. We propose Adaptive Style Incorporation (ASI), to achieve fine-grained feature-level style incorporation. It consists of the Siamese Cross-Attention (SiCA) to decouple the single-track cross-attention to a dual-track structure to obtain separate content and style features, and the Adaptive Content-Style Blending (AdaBlending) module to couple the content and style information from a structure-consistent manner. Experimentally, our method exhibits much better performance in both structure preservation and stylized effects. | 2025 | RAP-SR: RestorAtion Prior Enhancement in Diffusion Models for Realistic Image Super-ResolutionabstractBenefiting from their powerful generative capabilities, pretrained diffusion models have garnered significant attention for real-world image super-resolution (Real-SR). Existing diffusion-based SR approaches typically utilize semantic information from degraded images and restoration prompts to activate prior for producing realistic high-resolution images. However, general-purpose pretrained diffusion models, not designed for restoration tasks, often have suboptimal prior, and manually defined prompts may fail to fully exploit the generated potential. To address these limitations, we introduce RAP-SR, a novel restoration prior enhancement approach in pretrained diffusion models for Real-SR. First, we develop the High-Fidelity Aesthetic Image Dataset (HFAID), curated through a Quality-Driven Aesthetic Image Selection Pipeline (QDAISP). Our dataset not only surpasses existing ones in fidelity but also excels in aesthetic quality. Second, we propose the Restoration Priors Enhancement Framework, which includes Restoration Priors Refinement (RPR) and Restoration-Oriented Prompt Optimization (ROPO) modules. RPR refines the restoration prior using the HFAID, while ROPO optimizes the unique restoration identifier, improving the quality of the resulting images. RAP-SR effectively bridges the gap between general-purpose models and the demands of Real-SR by enhancing restoration prior. Leveraging the plug-and-play nature of RAP-SR, our approach can be seamlessly integrated into existing diffusion-based SR methods, boosting their performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate its broad applicability and state-of-the-art results. Qingnan Fan, Feng Huang 0007, Wenqi Ren |

| 2025 | Textualize Visual Prompt for Image Editing via Diffusion BridgeabstractVisual prompt, a pair of before-and-after edited images, can convey indescribable imagery transformations and prosper in image editing. However, current visual prompt methods rely on a pretrained text-guided image-to-image generative model that requires a triplet of text, before, and after images for retraining over a text-to-image model. Such crafting triplets and retraining processes limit the scalability and generalization of editing. In this paper, we present a framework based on any single text-to-image model without reliance on the explicit image-to-image model thus enhancing the generalizability and scalability. Specifically, by leveraging the probability-flow ordinary equation, we construct a diffusion bridge to transfer the distribution between before-and-after images under the text guidance. By optimizing the text via the bridge, the framework adaptively textualizes the editing transformation conveyed by visual prompts into text embeddings without other models. Meanwhile, we introduce differential attention control during optimization, which disentangles the text embedding from the invariance of the before-and-after images and makes it solely capture the delicate transformation and generalize to edit various images. Experiments on real images validate competitive results on the generalization, contextual coherence, and high fidelity for delicate editing with just one image pair as the visual prompt. | 2025 | TSD-SR: One-Step Diffusion with Target Score Distillation for Real-World Image Super-ResolutionabstractPre-trained text-to-image diffusion models are increasingly applied to real-world image super-resolution (Real-ISR) task. Given the iterative refinement nature of diffusion models, most existing approaches are computationally expensive. While methods such as SinSR and OSEDiff have emerged to condense inference steps via distillation, their performance in image restoration or details recovery is not satisfied. To address this, we propose TSD-SR, a novel distillation framework specifically designed for real-world image super-resolution, aiming to construct an efficient and effective one-step model. We first introduce the Target Score Distillation, which leverages the priors of diffusion models and real image references to achieve more realistic image restoration. Secondly, we propose a Distribution-Aware Sampling Module to make detail-oriented gradients more readily accessible, addressing the challenge of recovering fine details. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our TSD-SR has superior restoration results (most of the metrics perform the best) and the fastest inference speed (e.g. 40 times faster than SeeSR) compared to the past Real-ISR approaches based on pre-trained diffusion priors. | 2025 | Reloc3r: Large-Scale Training of Relative Camera Pose Regression for Generalizable, Fast, and Accurate Visual LocalizationabstractVisual localization aims to determine the camera pose of a query image relative to a database of posed images. In recent years, deep neural networks that directly regress camera poses have gained popularity due to their fast inference capabilities. However, existing methods struggle to either generalize well to new scenes or provide accurate camera pose estimates. To address these issues, we present Reloc3r, a simple yet effective visual localization framework. It consists of an elegantly designed relative pose regression network, and a minimalist motion averaging module for absolute pose estimation. Trained on approximately eight million posed image pairs, Reloc3r achieves surprisingly good performance and generalization ability. We conduct extensive experiments on six public datasets, consistently demonstrating the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. | 2025 | SLAM3R: Real-Time Dense Scene Reconstruction from Monocular RGB VideosabstractIn this paper, we introduce SLAM3R, a novel and effective system for real-time, high-quality, dense 3D reconstruction using RGB videos. SLAM3R provides an end-to-end solution by seamlessly integrating local 3D reconstruction and global coordinate registration through feed-forward neural networks. Given an input video, the system first converts it into overlapping clips using a sliding window mechanism. Unlike traditional pose optimization-based methods, SLAM3R directly regresses 3D pointmaps from RGB images in each window and progressively aligns and deforms these local pointmaps to create a globally consistent scene reconstruction-all without explicitly solving any camera parameters. Experiments across datasets consistently show that SLAM3R achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction accuracy and completeness while maintaining real-time performance at 20+ FPS. | 2025 | CoMPaSS: Enhancing Spatial Understanding in Text-to-Image Diffusion ModelsabstractText-to-image (T2I) diffusion models excel at generating photorealistic images but often fail to render accurate spatial relationships. We identify two core issues underlying this common failure: 1) the ambiguous nature of data concerning spatial relationships in existing datasets, and 2) the inability of current text encoders to accurately interpret the spatial semantics of input descriptions. We propose CoMPaSS, a versatile framework that enhances spatial understanding in T2I models. It first addresses data ambiguity with the Spatial Constraints-Oriented Pairing (SCOP) data engine, which curates spatially-accurate training data via principled constraints. To leverage these priors, CoMPaSS also introduces the Token ENcoding ORdering (TENOR) module, which preserves crucial token ordering information lost by text encoders, thereby reinforcing the prompt's linguistic structure. Extensive experiments on four popular T2I models (UNet and MMDiT-based) show CoMPaSS sets a new state of the art on key spatial benchmarks, with substantial relative gains on VISOR (+98%), T2I-CompBench Spatial (+67%), and GenEval Position (+131%). | 2025 | BokehDiff: Neural Lens Blur with One-Step DiffusionabstractWe introduce BokehDiff, a novel lens blur rendering method that achieves physically accurate and visually appealing outcomes, with the help of generative diffusion prior. Previous methods are bounded by the accuracy of depth estimation, generating artifacts in depth discontinuities. Our method employs a physics-inspired self-attention module that aligns with the image formation process, incorporating depth-dependent circle of confusion constraint and self-occlusion effects. We adapt the diffusion model to the one-step inference scheme without introducing additional noise, and achieve results of high quality and fidelity. | 2025 | AuthFace: Towards Authentic Blind Face Restoration with Face-oriented Generative Diffusion PriorabstractBlind face restoration (BFR) is a fundamental and challenging problem in computer vision. To faithfully restore high-quality (HQ) photos from poor-quality ones, recent research endeavors predominantly rely on facial image priors from the powerful pretrained text-to-image (T2I) diffusion models. However, such priors often lead to the incorrect generation of non-facial features and insufficient facial details, thus rendering them less practical for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, namely AuthFace that achieves highly authentic face restoration results by exploring a face-oriented generative diffusion prior. To learn such a prior, we first collect a dataset of 1.5K high-quality images, with resolutions exceeding 8K, captured by professional photographers. Based on the dataset, we then introduce a novel face-oriented restoration-tuning pipeline that fine-tunes a pretrained T2I model. Identifying key criteria of quality-first and photography-guided annotation, we involve the retouching and reviewing process under the guidance of photographers for high-quality images that show rich facial features. The photography-guided annotation system fully explores the potential of these high-quality photographic images. In this way, the potent natural image priors from pretrained T2I diffusion models can be subtly harnessed, specifically enhancing their capability in facial detail restoration. Moreover, to minimize artifacts in critical facial areas, such as eyes and mouth, we propose a time-aware latent facial feature loss to learn the authentic face restoration process. Extensive experiments on the synthetic and real-world BFR datasets demonstrate the superiority of our approach. Guoqiang Liang 0003, Qingnan Fan, Bingtao Fu, Jinwei Chen 0003, Lin Wang 0025 |

In this paper, we introduce a novel diffusion-based SR framework, namely TADiSR, which integrates text-aware attention and joint segmentation decoders to recover not only natural details but also the structural fidelity of text regions in degraded real-world images. Moreover, we propose a complete pipeline for synthesizing high-quality images with fine-grained full-image text masks, combining realistic foreground text regions with detailed background content. | 2023 | 3D-Aware Object Goal Navigation via Simultaneous Exploration and IdentificationabstractObject goal navigation (ObjectNav) in unseen environments is a fundamental task for Embodied AI. Agents in existing works learn ObjectNav policies based on 2D maps, scene graphs, or image sequences. Considering this task happens in 3D space, a 3D-aware agent can advance its ObjectNav capability via learning from fine-grained spatial information. However, leveraging 3D scene representation can be prohibitively unpractical for policy learning in this floor-level task, due to low sample efficiency and expensive computational cost. In this work, we propose a framework for the challenging 3D-aware ObjectNav based on two straightforward sub-policies. The two sub-polices, namely corner-guided exploration policy and category-aware identification policy, simultaneously perform by utilizing online fused 3D points as observation. Through extensive experiments, we show that this framework can dramatically improve the performance in ObjectNav through learning from 3D scene representation. Our framework achieves the best performance among all modular-based methods on the Matterport3D and Gibson datasets, while requiring (up to 30x) less computational cost for training. | 2023 | C·ASE: Learning Conditional Adversarial Skill Embeddings for Physics-based CharactersabstractWe present C · ASE, an efficient and effective framework that learns Conditional Adversarial Skill Embeddings for physics-based characters. C · ASE enables the physically simulated character to learn a diverse repertoire of skills while providing controllability in the form of direct manipulation of the skills to be performed. This is achieved by dividing the heterogeneous skill motions into distinct subsets containing homogeneous samples for training a low-level conditional model to learn the conditional behavior distribution. The skill-conditioned imitation learning naturally offers explicit control over the character’s skills after training. The training course incorporates the focal skill sampling, skeletal residual forces, and element-wise feature masking to balance diverse skills of varying complexities, mitigate dynamics mismatch to master agile motions and capture more general behavior characteristics, respectively. Once trained, the conditional model can produce highly diverse and realistic skills, outperforming state-of-the-art models, and can be repurposed in various downstream tasks. In particular, the explicit skill control handle allows a high-level policy or a user to direct the character with desired skill specifications, which we demonstrate is advantageous for interactive character animation. | 2023 | Scene-Aware Activity Program Generation with Language GuidanceabstractWe address the problem of scene-aware activity program generation, which requires decomposing a given activity task into instructions that can be sequentially performed within a target scene to complete the activity. While existing methods have shown the ability to generate rational or executable programs, generating programs with both high rationality and executability still remains a challenge. Hence, we propose a novel method where the key idea is to explicitly combine the language rationality of a powerful language model with dynamic perception of the target scene where instructions are executed, to generate programs with high rationality and executability. Our method iteratively generates instructions for the activity program. Specifically, a two-branch feature encoder operates on a language-based and graph-based representation of the current generation progress to extract language features and scene graph features, respectively. These features are then used by a predictor to generate the next instruction in the program. Subsequently, another module performs the predicted action and updates the scene for perception in the next iteration. Extensive evaluations are conducted on the VirtualHome-Env dataset, showing the advantages of our method over previous work. Key algorithmic designs are validated through ablation studies, and results on other types of inputs are also presented to show the generalizability of our method. | 2022 | ADeLA: Automatic Dense Labeling with Attention for Viewpoint Shift in Semantic SegmentationabstractWe describe a method to deal with performance drop in semantic segmentation caused by viewpoint changes within multi-camera systems, where temporally paired images are readily available, but the annotations may only be abundant for a few typical views. Existing methods alleviate performance drop via domain alignment in a shared space and assume that the mapping from the aligned space to the output is transferable. However, the novel content induced by viewpoint changes may nullify such a space for effective alignments, thus resulting in negative adaptation. Our method works without aligning any statistics of the images between the two domains. Instead, it utilizes a novel attention-based view transformation network trained only on color images to hallucinate the semantic images for the target. Despite the lack of supervision, the view transformation network can still generalize to semantic images thanks to the induced “information transport” bias. Furthermore, to resolve ambiguities in converting the semantic images to semantic labels, we treat the view transformation network as a functional representation of an unknown mapping implied by the color images and propose functional label hallucination to generate pseudo-labels with uncertainties in the target domains. Our method surpasses baselines built on state-of-the-art correspondence estimation and view synthesis methods. Moreover, it outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods that utilize self-training and adversarial domain alignments. | 2022 | Multi-Robot Active Mapping via Neural Bipartite Graph MatchingabstractWe study the problem of multi-robot active mapping, which aims for complete scene map construction in minimum time steps. The key to this problem lies in the goal position estimation to enable more efficient robot movements. Previous approaches either choose the frontier as the goal position via a myopic solution that hinders the time efficiency, or maximize the long-term value via reinforcement learning to directly regress the goal position, but does not guarantee the complete map construction. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, namely NeuralCoMapping, which takes advantage of both approaches. We reduce the problem to bipartite graph matching, which establishes the node correspondences between two graphs, denoting robots and frontiers. We introduce a multiplex graph neural network (mGNN) that learns the neural distance to fill the affinity matrix for more effective graph matching. We optimize the mGNN with a differentiable linear assignment layer by maximizing the long-term values that favor time efficiency and map completeness via reinforcement learning. We compare our algorithm with several state-of-the-art multi-robot active mapping approaches and adapted reinforcement-learning baselines. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance and exceptional generalization ability of our algorithm on various indoor scenes and unseen number of robots, when only trained with 9 indoor scenes. | 2021 | Robust Neural Routing Through Space Partitions for Camera Relocalization in Dynamic Indoor EnvironmentsabstractLocalizing the camera in a known indoor environment is a key building block for scene mapping, robot navigation, AR, etc. Recent advances estimate the camera pose via optimization over the 2D/3D-3D correspondences established between the coordinates in 2D/3D camera space and 3D world space. Such a mapping is estimated with either a convolution neural network or a decision tree using only the static input image sequence, which makes these approaches vulnerable to dynamic indoor environments that are quite common yet challenging in the real world. To address the aforementioned issues, in this paper, we propose a novel outlier-aware neural tree which bridges the two worlds, deep learning and decision tree approaches. It builds on three important blocks: (a) a hierarchical space partition over the indoor scene to construct the decision tree; (b) a neural routing function, implemented as a deep classification network, employed for better 3D scene understanding; and (c) an outlier rejection module used to filter out dynamic points during the hierarchical routing process. Our proposed algorithm is evaluated on the RIO-10 benchmark developed for camera relocalization in dynamic indoor environments. It achieves robust neural routing through space partitions and outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by around 30% on camera pose accuracy, while running comparably fast for evaluation. | 2021 | Generating Manga From Illustrations via Mimicking Manga Creation WorkflowabstractWe present a framework to generate manga from digital illustrations. In professional mange studios, the manga create workflow consists of three key steps: (1) Artists use line drawings to delineate the structural outlines in manga storyboards. (2) Artists apply several types of regular screentones to render the shading, occlusion, and object materials. (3) Artists selectively paste irregular screen textures onto the canvas to achieve various background layouts or special effects. Motivated by this workflow, we propose a data-driven framework to convert a digital illustration into three corresponding components: manga line drawing, regular screen-tone, and irregular screen texture. These components can be directly composed into manga images and can be further retouched for more plentiful manga creations. To this end, we create a large-scale dataset with these three components annotated by artists in a human-in-the-loop manner. We conduct both perceptual user study and qualitative evaluation of the generated manga, and observe that our generated image layers for these three components are practically usable in the daily works of manga artists. We provide 60 qualitative results and 15 additional comparisons in the supplementary material. We will make our presented manga dataset publicly available to assist related applications. | 2021 | Contrastive Multimodal Fusion with TupleInfoNCEabstractThis paper proposes a method for representation learning of multimodal data using contrastive losses. A traditional approach is to contrast different modalities to learn the information shared among them. However, that approach could fail to learn the complementary synergies between modalities that might be useful for downstream tasks. Another approach is to concatenate all the modalities into a tuple and then contrast positive and negative tuple correspondences. However, that approach could consider only the stronger modalities while ignoring the weaker ones. To address these issues, we propose a novel contrastive learning objective, TupleInfoNCE. It contrasts tuples based not only on positive and negative correspondences, but also by composing new negative tuples using modalities describing different scenes. Training with these additional negatives encourages the learning model to examine the correspondences among modalities in the same tuple, ensuring that weak modalities are not ignored. We provide a theoretical justification based on mutual-information for why this approach works, and we propose a sample optimization algorithm to generate positive and negative samples to maximize training efficacy. We find that TupleInfoNCE significantly outperforms previous state of the arts on three different downstream tasks. Qingnan Fan, Shanghang Zhang, Hao Dong 0003, Thomas A. Funkhouser, Li Yi 0001 |

| 2021 | CAPTRA: CAtegory-level Pose Tracking for Rigid and Articulated Objects from Point CloudsabstractIn this work, we tackle the problem of category-level online pose tracking of objects from point cloud sequences. For the first time, we propose a unified framework that can handle 9DoF pose tracking for novel rigid object instances as well as per-part pose tracking for articulated objects from known categories. Here the 9DoF pose, comprising 6D pose and 3D size, is equivalent to a 3D amodal bounding box representation with free 6D pose. Given the depth point cloud at the current frame and the estimated pose from the last frame, our novel end-to-end pipeline learns to accurately update the pose. Our pipeline is composed of three modules: 1) a pose canonicalization module that normalizes the pose of the input depth point cloud; 2) RotationNet, a module that directly regresses small interframe delta rotations; and 3) CoordinateNet, a module that predicts the normalized coordinates and segmentation, enabling analytical computation of the 3D size and translation. Leveraging the small pose regime in the pose-canonicalized point clouds, our method integrates the best of both worlds by combining dense coordinate prediction and direct rotation regression, thus yielding an end-to-end differentiable pipeline optimized for 9DoF pose accuracy (without using non-differentiable RANSAC). Our extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance on category-level rigid object pose (NOCSREAL275 [29]) and articulated object pose benchmarks (SAPIEN [34], BMVC [18]) at the fastest FPS ∼ 12. | 2021 | A General Decoupled Learning Framework for Parameterized Image OperatorsabstractMany different deep networks have been used to approximate, accelerate or improve traditional image operators. Among these traditional operators, many contain parameters which need to be tweaked to obtain the satisfactory results, which we refer to as "parameterized image operators". However, most existing deep networks trained for these operators are only designed for one specific parameter configuration, which does not meet the needs of real scenarios that usually require flexible parameters settings. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new decoupled learning algorithm to learn from the operator parameters to dynamically adjust the weights of a deep network for image operators, denoted as the base network. The learned algorithm is formed as another network, namely the weight learning network, which can be end-to-end jointly trained with the base network. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed framework can be successfully applied to many traditional parameterized image operators. To accelerate the parameter tuning for practical scenarios, the proposed framework can be further extended to dynamically change the weights of only one single layer of the base network while sharing most computation cost. We demonstrate that this cheap parameter-tuning extension of the proposed decoupled learning framework even outperforms the state-of-the-art alternative approaches. | 2020 | Generative 3D Part Assembly via Dynamic Graph LearningabstractAutonomous part assembly is a challenging yet crucial task in 3D computer vision and robotics. Analogous to buying an IKEA furniture, given a set of 3D parts that can assemble a single shape, an intelligent agent needs to perceive the 3D part geometry, reason to propose pose estimations for the input parts, and finally call robotic planning and control routines for actuation. In this paper, we focus on the pose estimation subproblem from the vision side involving geometric and relational reasoning over the input part geometry. Essentially, the task of generative 3D part assembly is to predict a 6-DoF part pose, including a rigid rotation and translation, for each input part that assembles a single 3D shape as the final output. To tackle this problem, we propose an assembly-oriented dynamic graph learning framework that leverages an iterative graph neural network as a backbone. It explicitly conducts sequential part assembly refinements in a coarse-to-fine manner, exploits a pair of part relation reasoning module and part aggregation module for dynamically adjusting both part features and their relations in the part graph. We conduct extensive experiments and quantitative comparisons to three strong baseline methods, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. | 2020 | Controllable Image Processing via Adaptive FilterBank PyramidabstractTraditional image processing operators often provide some control parameters to tweak the final results. Recently, different convolutional neural networks have been used to approximate or improve these operators. However, in those methods, one single model can only handle one operator of a specific parameter value and does not support parameter tuning. In this paper, we propose a new plugin module, “Adaptive Filterbank Pyramid”, which can be inserted into a backbone network to support multiple operators and continuous parameter tuning. Our module explicitly represents one operator with one filterbank pyramid. To generate the results of a specific operator, the corresponding filterbank pyramid is convolved with the intermediate feature pyramid produced by the backbone network. The weights of the filterbank pyramid are directly regressed by another sub-network, which is jointly trained with the backbone network and adapted to the input parameter, thus enabling continuous parameter tuning. We applied the proposed module for a large variety of image processing tasks, including image smoothing, image denoising, image deblocking, image enhancement and neural style transfer. Experiments show that our method is generalized to different types of image processing tasks and different backbone network structures. Compared to the single-operator-single-parameter baseline, our method can produce comparable results but is significantly more efficient in both training and testing. | 2019 | RainFlow: Optical Flow Under Rain Streaks and Rain Veiling EffectabstractOptical flow in heavy rainy scenes is challenging due to the presence of both rain steaks and rain veiling effect, which break the existing optical flow constraints. Concerning this, we propose a deep-learning based optical flow method designed to handle heavy rain. We introduce a feature multiplier in our network that transforms the features of an image affected by the rain veiling effect into features that are less affected by it, which we call veiling-invariant features. We establish a new mapping operation in the feature space to produce streak-invariant features. The operation is based on a feature pyramid structure of the input images, and the basic idea is to preserve the chromatic features of the background scenes while canceling the rain-streak patterns. Both the veiling-invariant and streak-invariant features are computed and optimized automatically based on the the accuracy of our optical flow estimation. Our network is end-to-end, and handles both rain streaks and the veiling effect in an integrated framework. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness of our method, which outperforms the state of the art method and other baseline methods. We also show that our network can robustly maintain good performance on clean (no rain) images even though it is trained under rain image data. Ruoteng Li, Robby T. Tan, Loong Fah Cheong, Angelica I. | 2019 | Gated Context Aggregation Network for Image Dehazing and DerainingabstractImage dehazing aims to recover the uncorrupted content from a hazy image. Instead of leveraging traditional low-level or handcrafted image priors as the restoration constraints, e.g., dark channels and increased contrast, we propose an end-to-end gated context aggregation network to directly restore the final haze-free image. In this network, we adopt the latest smoothed dilation technique to help remove the gridding artifacts caused by the widely-used dilated convolution with negligible extra parameters, and leverage a gated sub-network to fuse the features from different levels. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can surpass previous state-of-the-art methods by a large margin both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition, to demonstrate the generality of the proposed method, we further apply it to the image deraining task, which also achieves the state-of-the-art performance. | 2019 | Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall, Who's Got the Clearest Image of Them All? - A Tailored Approach to Single Image Reflection RemovalabstractRemoving reflection artefacts from a single image is a problem of both theoretical and practical interest, which still presents challenges because of the massively ill-posed nature of the problem. In this paper, we propose a technique based on a novel optimization problem. First, we introduce a simple user interaction scheme, which helps minimize information loss in the reflection-free regions. Second, we introduce an H2fidelity term, which preserves fine detail while enforcing the global color similarity. We show that this combination allows us to mitigate the shortcomings in structure and color preservation, which presents some of the most prominent drawbacks in the existing methods for reflection removal. We demonstrate, through numerical and visual experiments, that our method is able to outperform the state-of-the-art model-based methods and compete with recent deep-learning approaches. | 2018 | Revisiting Deep Intrinsic Image DecompositionsabstractWhile invaluable for many computer vision applications, decomposing a natural image into intrinsic reflectance and shading layers represents a challenging, underdetermined inverse problem. As opposed to strict reliance on conventional optimization or filtering solutions with strong prior assumptions, deep learning based approaches have also been proposed to compute intrinsic image decompositions when granted access to sufficient labeled training data. The downside is that current data sources are quite limited, and broadly speaking fall into one of two categories: either dense fully-labeled images in synthetic/narrow settings, or weakly-labeled data from relatively diverse natural scenes. In contrast to many previous learning-based approaches, which are often tailored to the structure of a particular dataset (and may not work well on others), we adopt core network structures that universally reflect loose prior knowledge regarding the intrinsic image formation process and can be largely shared across datasets. We then apply flexibly supervised loss layers that are customized for each source of ground truth labels. The resulting deep architecture achieves state-of-the-art results on all of the major intrinsic image benchmarks, and runs considerably faster than most at test time. | 2018 | Image smoothing via unsupervised learningabstractImage smoothing represents a fundamental component of many disparate computer vision and graphics applications. In this paper, we present a unified unsupervised (label-free) learning framework that facilitates generating flexible and high-quality smoothing effects by directly learning from data using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The heart of the design is the training signal as a novel energy function that includes an edge-preserving regularizer which helps maintain important yet potentially vulnerable image structures, and a spatially-adaptive L p flattening criterion which imposes different forms of regularization onto different image regions for better smoothing quality. We implement a diverse set of image smoothing solutions employing the unified framework targeting various applications such as, image abstraction, pencil sketching, detail enhancement, texture removal and content-aware image manipulation, and obtain results comparable with or better than previous methods. Moreover, our method is extremely fast with a modern GPU (e.g, 200 fps for 1280×720 images). Qingnan Fan, Jiaolong Yang, David P. Wipf, Baoquan Chen, Xin Tong 0001 |

| 2017 | A Generic Deep Architecture for Single Image Reflection Removal and Image SmoothingabstractThis paper proposes a deep neural network structure that exploits edge information in addressing representative low-level vision tasks such as layer separation and image filtering. Unlike most other deep learning strategies applied in this context, our approach tackles these challenging problems by estimating edges and reconstructing images using only cascaded convolutional layers arranged such that no handcrafted or application-specific image-processing components are required. We apply the resulting transferrable pipeline to two different problem domains that are both sensitive to edges, namely, single image reflection removal and image smoothing. For the former, using a mild reflection smoothness assumption and a novel synthetic data generation method that acts as a type of weak supervision, our network is able to solve much more difficult reflection cases that cannot be handled by previous methods. For the latter, we also exceed the state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative results by wide margins. In all cases, the proposed framework is simple, fast, and easy to transfer across disparate domains. Qingnan Fan, Jiaolong Yang, Gang Hua 0001, Baoquan Chen, David P. Wipf |

| 2015 | JumpCut: non-successive mask transfer and interpolation for video cutoutabstractWe introduce JumpCut, a new mask transfer and interpolation method for interactive video cutout. Given a source frame for which a foreground mask is already available, we compute an estimate of the foreground mask at another, typically non-successive, target frame. Observing that the background and foreground regions typically exhibit different motions, we leverage these differences by computing two separate nearest-neighbor fields (split-NNF) from the target to the source frame. These NNFs are then used to jointly predict a coherent labeling of the pixels in the target frame. The same split-NNF is also used to aid a novel edge classifier in detecting silhouette edges (S-edges) that separate the foreground from the background. A modified level set method is then applied to produce a clean mask, based on the pixel labels and the S-edges computed by the previous two steps. The resulting mask transfer method may also be used for coherently interpolating the foreground masks between two distant source frames. Our results demonstrate that the proposed method is significantly more accurate than the existing state-of-the-art on a wide variety of video sequences. Thus, it reduces the required amount of user effort, and provides a basis for an effective interactive video object cutout tool. | 2014 | Build-to-last: strength to weight 3D printed objectsabstractThe emergence of low-cost 3D printers steers the investigation of new geometric problems that control the quality of the fabricated object. In this paper, we present a method to reduce the material cost and weight of a given object while providing a durable printed model that is resistant to impact and external forces. We introduce a hollowing optimization algorithm based on the concept of honeycomb-cells structure. Honeycombs structures are known to be of minimal material cost while providing strength in tension. We utilize the Voronoi diagram to compute irregular honeycomb-like volume tessellations which define the inner structure. We formulate our problem as a strength--to--weight optimization and cast it as mutually finding an optimal interior tessellation and its maximal hollowing subject to relieve the interior stress. Thus, our system allows to build-to-last 3D printed objects with large control over their strength-to-weight ratio and easily model various interior structures. We demonstrate our method on a collection of 3D objects from different categories. Furthermore, we evaluate our method by printing our hollowed models and measure their stress and weights.
