2025 Learning Cascade Ranking as One Network
abstract
Cascade Ranking is a prevalent architecture in large-scale top-k selection systems like recommendation and advertising platforms. Traditional training methods focus on single-stage optimization, neglecting interactions between stages. Recent advances have introduced interaction-aware training paradigms, but still struggle to 1) align training objectives with the goal of the entire cascade ranking (i.e., end-to-end recall of ground-truth items) and 2) learn effective collaboration patterns for different stages. To address these challenges, we propose LCRON, which introduces a novel surrogate loss function derived from the lower bound probability that ground truth items are selected by cascade ranking, ensuring alignment with the overall objective of the system. According to the properties of the derived bound, we further design an auxiliary loss for each stage to drive the reduction of this bound, leading to a more robust and effective top-k selection. LCRON enables end-to-end training of the entire cascade ranking system as a unified network. Experimental results demonstrate that LCRON achieves significant improvement over existing methods on public benchmarks and industrial applications, addressing key limitations in cascade ranking training and significantly enhancing system performance.

2024 Adaptive Neural Ranking Framework: Toward Maximized Business Goal for Cascade Ranking Systems
abstract
Cascade ranking is widely used for large-scale top-k selection problems in online advertising and recommendation systems, and learning-to-rank is an important way to optimize the models in cascade ranking. Previous works on learning-to-rank usually focus on letting the model learn the complete order or top-k order, and adopt the corresponding rank metrics (e.g. OPA and NDCG@k) as optimization targets. However, these targets can not adapt to various cascade ranking scenarios with varying data complexities and model capabilities; and the existing metric-driven methods such as the Lambda framework can only optimize a rough upper bound of limited metrics, potentially resulting in sub-optimal and performance misalignment. To address these issues, we propose a novel perspective on optimizing cascade ranking systems by highlighting the adaptability of optimization targets to data complexities and model capabilities. Concretely, we employ multi-task learning to adaptively combine the optimization of relaxed and full targets, which refers to metrics Recall@m@k and OPA respectively. We also introduce permutation matrix to represent the rank metrics and employ differentiable sorting techniques to relax hard permutation matrix with controllable approximate error bound. This enables us to optimize both the relaxed and full targets directly and more appropriately. We named this method as Adaptive Neural Ranking Framework (abbreviated as ARF). Furthermore, we give a specific practice under ARF. We use the NeuralSort to obtain the relaxed permutation matrix and draw on the variant of the uncertainty weight method in multi-task learning to optimize the proposed losses jointly. Experiments on a total of 4 public and industrial benchmarks show the effectiveness and generalization of our method, and online experiment shows that our method has significant application value.

2022 AMCAD: Adaptive Mixed-Curvature Representation based Advertisement Retrieval System
abstract
Graph embedding based retrieval has become one of the most popular techniques in the information retrieval community and search engine industry. The classical paradigm mainly relies on the flat Euclidean geometry. In recent years, hyperbolic (negative curvature) and spherical (positive curvature) representation methods have shown their superiority to capture hierarchical and cyclic data structures respectively. However, in industrial scenarios such as e-commerce sponsored search platforms, the large-scale heterogeneous query-item-advertisement interaction graphs often have multiple structures coexisting. Existing methods either only consider a single geometry space, or combine several spaces manually, which are incapable and inflexible to model the complexity and heterogeneity in the real scenario. To tackle this challenge, we present a web-scale Adaptive Mixed-Curvature ADvertisement retrieval system (AM-CAD) to automatically capture the complex and heterogeneous graph structures in non-Euclidean spaces. Specifically, entities are represented in adaptive mixed-curvature spaces, where the types and curvatures of the subspaces are trained to be optimal combinations. Besides, an attentive edge-wise space projector is designed to model the similarities between heterogeneous nodes according to local graph structures and the relation types. Moreover, to deploy AMCAD in Taobao, one of the largest e-commerce platforms with hundreds of million users, we design an efficient two-layer online retrieval framework for the task of graph based advertisement retrieval. Extensive evaluations on real-world datasets and A/B tests on online traffic are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

2021 SMAD: Scalable Multi-view Ad Retrieval System for E-Commerce Sponsored Search
abstract
Ad retrieval in sponsored search aims to understand user search intentions (user queries) and retrieves a set of ads inferred as being relevant to the queries. Due to the huge amount of search traffic and multiple views of relevance (such as co-clicking, co-bidding or textual similar), it is highly desirable but remain challenging to achieve a large-scale, multi-view matching between queries and ads, particularly in industrial settings. In this paper, we propose a scalable multi-view ad retrieval engine SMAD that we developed and deployed at Taobao, the largest e-commerce platform in China. We construct a multi-relation query-item-ad graph capturing different views of query-ad relevance, which is of large scale and with complex structure. Since in e-commerce platform, the queries and products are organized into a category tree, to deal with the large scale of the graph, we propose a category constrained graph sampling and partition method to enable distributed parallel offline training. To tackle the complex multi-view structure, we propose a multi-view parallel deep neural network (DNN) model to combine the information from different views in a principled way. According to offline experiments and online A/B tests, our framework significantly outperforms baselines in terms of relevance, coverage, and revenue.

2015 Overview of the NLPCC 2015 Shared Task: Weibo-Oriented Chinese News Summarization
abstract
The Weibo-oriented Chinese news summarization task aims to automatically generate a short summary for a given Chinese news article, and the short summary is used for news release and propagation on Sina Weibo. The length of the short summary is less than 140 Chinese characters. The task can be considered a special case of single document summarization. In this paper, we will introduce the evaluation dataset, the participating teams and the evaluation results. The dataset has been released publicly.

2014 Emotion Classification in Microblog Texts Using Class Sequential Rules
abstract
This paper studies the problem of emotion classification in microblog texts. Given a microblog text which consists of several sentences, we classify its emotion as anger, disgust, fear, happiness, like, sadness or surprise if available. Existing methods can be categorized as lexicon based methods or machine learning based methods. However, due to some intrinsic characteristics of the microblog texts, previous studies using these methods always get unsatisfactory results. This paper introduces a novel approach based on class sequential rules for emotion classification of microblog texts. The approach first obtains two potential emotion labels for each sentence in a microblog text by using an emotion lexicon and a machine learning approach respectively, and regards each microblog text as a data sequence. It then mines class sequential rules from the dataset and finally derives new features from the mined rules for emotion classification of microblog texts. Experimental results on a Chinese benchmark dataset show the superior performance of the proposed approach.
