2026 Structure-Aware Feature Rectification with Region Adjacency Graphs for Training-Free Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Benefiting from the inductive biases learned from large-scale datasets, open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS) leverages the power of vision-language models, such as CLIP, to achieve remarkable progress without requiring task-specific training. However, due to CLIP’s pre-training nature on image-text pairs, it tends to focus on global semantic alignment, resulting in suboptimal performance when associating fine-grained visual regions with text. This leads to noisy and inconsistent predictions, particularly in local areas. We attribute this to a dispersed bias stemming from its contrastive training paradigm, which is difficult to alleviate using CLIP features alone. To address this, we propose a structure-aware feature rectification approach that incorporates instance-specific priors derived directly from the image. Specifically, we construct a region adjacency graph (RAG) based on low-level features (e.g. colour and texture) to capture local structural relationships and use it to refine CLIP features by enhancing local discrimination. Extensive experiments show that our method effectively suppresses segmentation noise, improves region-level consistency, and achieves strong performance on multiple open-vocabulary segmentation benchmarks. 2026 3D Superquadric Splatting
abstract
Gaussian Splatting has proven to be an effective algorithm for novel view synthesis and 3D reconstruction from multi-view images. However, the underlying volumetric primitive—the ellipsoidal Gaussian—has limited expressive capabilities, leading to difficulties in 3D modelling (especially geometry such as edges, corners, and high curvature). To address this limitation, in this paper, we introduce Superquadric Splats (SQS), an extended class of volumetric primitives, as a superset of Gaussian Splats, to model more detailed geometry. We treat superquadrics as volumetric distance functions rather than level-set surfaces. A non-trivial differentiable rendering pipeline is developed to support this. Extensive experimental analysis on multiple datasets validates the effectiveness of the proposed SQS approach, showing both enhanced visual and geometric performance compared to Gaussian-based splatting (with more than 1dB in PSNR and prominent geometric improvement). 2025 CoMBO: Conflict Mitigation via Branched Optimization for Class Incremental Segmentation
abstract
Effective Class Incremental Segmentation (CIS) requires simultaneously mitigating catastrophic forgetting and ensuring sufficient plasticity to integrate new classes. The inherent conflict above often leads to a back-and-forth, which turns the objective into finding the balance between the performance of previous (old) and incremental (new) classes. To address this conflict, we introduce a novel approach, Conflict Mitigation via Branched Optimization (CoMBO). Within this approach, we present the Query Conflict Reduction module, designed to explicitly refine queries for new classes through lightweight, class-specific adapters. This module provides an additional branch for the acquisition of new classes while preserving the original queries for distillation. Moreover, we develop two strategies to further mitigate the conflict following the branched structure, i.e., the Half-Learning Half-Distillation (HDHL) over classification probabilities, and the Importance-Based Knowledge Distillation (IKD) over query features. HDHL selectively engages in learning for classification probabilities of queries that match the ground truth of new classes, while aligning unmatched ones to the corresponding old probabilities, thus ensuring retention of old knowledge while absorbing new classes via learning negative samples. Meanwhile, IKD assesses the importance of queries based on their matching degree to old classes, prioritizing the distillation of important features and allowing less critical features to evolve. Extensive experiments in Class Incremental Panoptic and Semantic Segmentation settings have demonstrated the superior performance of CoMBO. Project page: https://guangyu-ryan.github.io/CoMBO.

2025 LocalDyGS: Multi-view Global Dynamic Scene Modeling via Adaptive Local Implicit Feature Decoupling
abstract
Due to the complex and highly dynamic motions in the real world, synthesizing dynamic videos from multi-view inputs for arbitrary viewpoints is challenging. Previous works based on neural radiance field or 3D Gaussian splatting are limited to modeling fine-scale motion, greatly restricting their application. In this paper, we introduce LocalDyGS, which consists of two parts to adapt our method to both large-scale and fine-scale motion scenes: 1) We decompose a complex dynamic scene into streamlined local spaces defined by seeds, enabling global modeling by capturing motion within each local space. 2) We decouple static and dynamic features for local space motion modeling. A static feature shared across time steps captures static information, while a dynamic residual field provides time-specific features. These are combined and decoded to generate Temporal Gaussians, modeling motion within each local space. As a result, we propose a novel dynamic scene reconstruction framework to model highly dynamic real-world scenes more realistically. Our method not only demonstrates competitive performance on various fine-scale datasets compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods, but also represents the first attempt to model larger and more complex highly dynamic scenes. 2025 Revisit the Open Nature of Open Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation
abstract
In Open Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation (OVS), we observe a consistent drop in model performance as the query vocabulary set expands, especially when it includes semantically similar and ambiguous vocabularies, such as ‘sofa’ and ‘couch’. The previous OVS evaluation protocol, however, does not account for such ambiguity, as any mismatch between model-predicted and human-annotated pairs is simply treated as incorrect on a pixel-wise basis. This contradicts the open nature of OVS, where ambiguous categories may both be correct from an open- world perspective. To address this, in this work, we study the open nature of OVS and propose a mask-wise evaluation protocol that is based on matched and mis- matched mask pairs between prediction and annotation respectively. Extensive experimental evaluations show that the proposed mask-wise protocol provides a more effective and reliable evaluation framework for OVS models compared to the previous pixel-wise approach on the perspective of open-world. Moreover, analy- sis of mismatched mask pairs reveals that a large amount of ambiguous categories exist in commonly used OVS datasets. Interestingly, we find that reducing these ambiguities during both training and inference enhances capabilities of OVS mod- els. These findings and the new evaluation protocol encourage further exploration of the open nature of OVS, as well as broader open-world challenges. 2025 DeHate: A Holistic Hateful Video Dataset for Explicit and Implicit Hate Detection
abstract
Hate speech poses a persistent threat to society, causing profound harm to both individuals and communities. Detecting such content is essential for promoting safer and more inclusive environments. While previous research has primarily focused on text-based or image-based hate speech detection, video-based hate detection remains relatively underexplored. A key barrier is the limited availability of high-quality video datasets. Existing hateful video datasets are typically limited in scale, diversity, and annotation depth, often labeling hateful content without further distinguishing between explicit and implicit forms. In this work, we present DeHate, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the largest hateful video dataset to date. DeHate comprises 6689 videos collected from two platforms and spanning six social groups. Each video is annotated with fine-grained labels that differentiate explicit, implicit, and non-hateful content, along with segment-level localization of hate, identification of contributing modalities, and specification of the targeted groups. Through detailed analysis of annotated videos across platforms, we reveal distinct patterns in how hateful content is conveyed, offering a comprehensive comparison between explicit and implicit hate in terms of their prevalence and characteristics. Furthermore, we benchmark state-of-the-art models, including both uni-modal and multi-modal architectures, and identify persistent challenges in detecting subtle and context-dependent forms of hate. Our findings highlight the importance of holistic and fine-grained hateful video datasets for advancing research in hate speech detection. 2025 A Unified Reasoning Framework for Holistic Zero-Shot Video Anomaly Analysis
abstract
Most video-anomaly research stops at frame-wise detection, offering little insight into why an event is abnormal, typically outputting only frame-wise anomaly scores without spatial or semantic context. Recent video anomaly localization and video anomaly understanding methods improve explainability but remain data-dependent and task-specific. We propose a unified reasoning framework that bridges the gap between temporal detection, spatial localization, and textual explanation. Our approach is built upon a chained test-time reasoning process that sequentially connects these tasks, enabling holistic zero-shot anomaly analysis without any additional training. Specifically, our approach leverages intra-task reasoning to refine temporal detections and inter-task chaining for spatial and semantic understanding, yielding improved interpretability and generalization in a fully zero-shot manner. Without any additional data or gradients, our method achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance across multiple video anomaly detection, localization, and explanation benchmarks. The results demonstrate that careful prompt design with task-wise chaining can unlock the reasoning power of foundation models, enabling practical, interpretable video anomaly analysis in a fully zero-shot manner. 2025 PRFormer: Matching Proposal and Reference Masks by Semantic and Spatial Similarity for Few-Shot Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Few-shot Semantic Segmentation (FSS) aims to accurately segment query images with guidance from only a few annotated support images. Previous methods typically rely on pixel-level feature correlations, denoted as the many-to-many (pixels-to-pixels) or few-to-many (prototype-to-pixels) manners. Recent mask proposals classification pipeline in semantic segmentation enables more efficient few-to-few (prototype-to-prototype) correlation between masks of query proposals and support reference. However, these methods still involve intermediate pixel-level feature correlation, resulting in lower efficiency. In this paper, we introduce the Proposal and Reference masks matching transFormer (PRFormer), designed to rigorously address mask matching in both spatial and semantic aspects in a thorough few-to-few manner. Following the mask-classification paradigm, PRFormer starts with a class-agnostic proposal generator to partition the query image into proposal masks. It then evaluates the features corresponding to query proposal masks and support reference masks using two strategies: semantic matching based on feature similarity across prototypes and spatial matching through mask intersection ratio. These strategies are implemented as the Prototype Contrastive Correlation (PrCC) and Prior-Proposals Intersection (PPI) modules, respectively. These strategies enhance matching precision and efficiency while eliminating dependence on pixel-level feature correlations. Additionally, we propose the category discrimination NCE (cdNCE) loss and IoU-KLD loss to constrain the adapted prototypes and align the similarity vector with the corresponding IoU between proposals and ground truth. Given that class-agnostic proposals tend to be more accurate for training classes than for novel classes in FSS, we introduce the Weighted Proposal Refinement (WPR) to refine the most confident masks with detailed features, yielding more precise predictions. Experiments on the popular Pascal-5i and COCO-20i benchmarks show that our Few-to-Few approach, PRFormer, outperforms previous methods, achieving mIoU scores of 70.4% and 49.4%, respectively, on 1-shot segmentation. 2024 360+x: A Panoptic Multi-modal Scene Understanding Dataset
abstract
Human perception of the world is shaped by a multitude of viewpoints and modalities. While many existing datasets focus on scene understanding from a certain perspective (e.g. egocentric or third-person views), our dataset offers a panoptic perspective (i.e. multiple viewpoints with multiple data modalities). Specifically, we encapsulate third-person panoramic and front views, as well as egocentric monocular/binocular views with rich modalities including video, multi-channel audio, directional binaural delay, location data and textual scene descriptions within each scene captured, presenting comprehensive observation of the world. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first database that covers multiple viewpoints with multiple data modalities to mimic how daily information is accessed in the real world. Through our benchmark analysis, we presented 5 different scene understanding tasks on the proposed 360+x dataset to evaluate the impact and benefit of each data modality and perspective in panoptic scene understanding. We hope this unique dataset could broaden the scope of comprehensive scene understanding and encourage the community to approach these problems from more diverse perspectives.

2024 PKU-DyMVHumans: A Multi-View Video Benchmark for High-Fidelity Dynamic Human Modeling
abstract
High-quality human reconstruction and photo-realistic rendering of a dynamic scene is a long-standing problem in computer vision and graphics. Despite considerable ef-forts invested in developing various capture systems and re-construction algorithms, recent advancements still struggle with loose or oversized clothing and overly complex poses. In part, this is due to the challenges of acquiring high-quality human datasets. To facilitate the development of these fields, in this paper, we present PKU-DyMVHumans, a versatile human-centric dataset for high-fidelity reconstruction and rendering of dynamic human scenarios from dense multi-view videos. It comprises 8.2 million frames captured by more than 56 synchronized cameras across diverse scenarios. These sequences comprise 32 human subjects across 45 different scenarios, each with a high-detailed appearance and realistic human motion. Inspired by recent advancements in neural radiance field (NeRF)-based scene representations, we carefully set up an off-the-shelf framework that is easy to provide those state-of-the-art NeRF-based implementations and benchmark on PKU-DyMVHumans dataset. It is paving the way for various applications like fine-grained foreground/background de-composition, high-quality human reconstruction and photo-realistic novel view synthesis of a dynamic scene. Exten-sive studies are performed on the benchmark, demonstrating new observations and challenges that emerge from using such high-fidelity dynamic data. 2024 Frame Interpolation with Consecutive Brownian Bridge Diffusion
abstract
Recent work in Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) tries to formulate VFI as a diffusion-based conditional image generation problem, synthesizing the intermediate frame given a random noise and neighboring frames. Due to the relatively high resolution of videos, Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) are employed to run diffusion models in latent space efficiently. Such a formulation poses a crucial challenge: VFI expects that the output is deterministically equal to the ground truth intermediate frame, but LDMs randomly generate a diverse set of different images when the model runs multiple times. The diversity is due to the large cumulative variance (variance accumulated at each generation step) of generated latent representations in LDMs, making the sampling trajectory random. To address this problem, we propose our unique solution: Frame Interpolation with Consecutive Brownian Bridge Diffusion. Specifically, we propose consecutive Brownian Bridge diffusion that takes a deterministic initial value as input, resulting in a much smaller cumulative variance of generated latent representations. Our experiments suggest that our method can improve together with the improvement of the autoencoder and achieve state-of-the-art performance in VFI, leaving strong potential for further enhancement. 2024 Structure Consistent Gaussian Splatting with Matching Prior for Few-shot Novel View Synthesis
abstract
Despite the substantial progress of novel view synthesis, existing methods, either based on the Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) or more recently 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), suffer significant degradation when the input becomes sparse. Numerous efforts have been introduced to alleviate this problem, but they still struggle to synthesize satisfactory results efficiently, especially in the large scene. In this paper, we propose SCGaussian, a Structure Consistent Gaussian Splatting method using matching priors to learn 3D consistent scene structure. Considering the high interdependence of Gaussian attributes, we optimize the scene structure in two folds: rendering geometry and, more importantly, the position of Gaussian primitives, which is hard to be directly constrained in the vanilla 3DGS due to the non-structure property. To achieve this, we present a hybrid Gaussian representation. Besides the ordinary non-structure Gaussian primitives, our model also consists of ray-based Gaussian primitives that are bound to matching rays and whose optimization of their positions is restricted along the ray. Thus, we can utilize the matching correspondence to directly enforce the position of these Gaussian primitives to converge to the surface points where rays intersect. Extensive experiments on forward-facing, surrounding, and complex large scenes show the effectiveness of our approach with state-of-the-art performance and high efficiency. 2024 Bridge the Points: Graph-based Few-shot Segment Anything Semantically
abstract
The recent advancements in large-scale pre-training techniques have significantly enhanced the capabilities of vision foundation models, notably the Segment Anything Model (SAM), which can generate precise masks based on point and box prompts. Recent studies extend SAM to Few-shot Semantic Segmentation (FSS), focusing on prompt generation for SAM-based automatic semantic segmentation. However, these methods struggle with selecting suitable prompts, require specific hyperparameter settings for different scenarios, and experience prolonged one-shot inference times due to the overuse of SAM, resulting in low efficiency and limited automation ability. To address these issues, we propose a simple yet effective approach based on graph analysis. In particular, a Positive-Negative Alignment module dynamically selects the point prompts for generating masks, especially uncovering the potential of the background context as the negative reference. Another subsequent Point-Mask Clustering module aligns the granularity of masks and selected points as a directed graph, based on mask coverage over points. These points are then aggregated by decomposing the weakly connected components of the directed graph in an efficient manner, constructing distinct natural clusters. Finally, the positive and overshooting gating, benefiting from graph-based granularity alignment, aggregates high-confident masks and filters the false-positive masks for final prediction, reducing the usage of additional hyperparameters and redundant mask generation. Extensive experimental analysis across standard FSS, One-shot Part Segmentation, and Cross Domain FSS datasets validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed approach, surpassing state-of-the-art generalist models with a mIoU of 58.7% on COCO-20i and 35.2% on LVIS-92i. 2024 Disentangled Pre-training for Image Matting
abstract
Image matting requires high-quality pixel-level human annotations to support the training of a deep model in recent literature. Whereas such annotation is costly and hard to scale, significantly holding back the development of the research. In this work, we make the first attempt towards addressing this problem, by proposing a self-supervised pretraining approach that can leverage infinite numbers of data to boost the matting performance. The pre-training task is designed in a similar manner as image matting, where random trimap and alpha matte are generated to achieve an image disentanglement objective. The pre-trained model is then used as an initialisation of the downstream matting task for fine-tuning. Extensive experimental evaluations show that the proposed approach outperforms both the state-of-the-art matting methods and other alternative self-supervised initialisation approaches by a large margin. We also show the robustness of the proposed approach over different backbone architectures. Our project page is available at https://crystraldo.github.io/dpt_mat/.

2024 FreMIM: Fourier Transform Meets Masked Image Modeling for Medical Image Segmentation
abstract
The research community has witnessed the powerful potential of self-supervised Masked Image Modeling (MIM), which enables the models capable of learning visual representation from unlabeled data. In this paper, to incorporate both the crucial global structural information and local details for dense prediction tasks, we alter the perspective to the frequency domain and present a new MIM-based framework named FreMIM for self-supervised pre-training to better accomplish medical image segmentation tasks. Based on the observations that the detailed structural information mainly lies in the high-frequency components and the high-level semantics are abundant in the low-frequency counterparts, we further incorporate multi-stage supervision to guide the representation learning during the pre-training phase. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets show the superior advantage of our FreMIM over previous state-of-the-art MIM methods. Compared with various baselines trained from scratch, our FreMIM could consistently bring considerable improvements to model performance. The code will be publicly available at https://github.com/jingw193/FreMIM.

2024 Inferring Attention Shifts for Salient Instance Ranking
abstract
Abstract The human visual system has limited capacity in simultaneously processing multiple visual inputs. Consequently, humans rely on shifting their attention from one location to another. When viewing an image of complex scenes, psychology studies and behavioural observations show that humans prioritise and sequentially shift attention among multiple visual stimuli. In this paper, we propose to predict the saliency rank of multiple objects by inferring human attention shift. We first construct a new large-scale salient object ranking dataset, with the saliency rank of objects defined by the order that an observer attends to these objects via attention shift. We then propose a new deep learning-based model to leverage both bottom-up and top-down attention mechanisms for saliency rank prediction. Our model includes three novel modules: Spatial Mask Module (SMM), Selective Attention Module (SAM) and Salient Instance Edge Module (SIEM). SMM integrates bottom-up and semantic object properties to enhance contextual object features, from which SAM learns the dependencies between object features and image features for saliency reasoning. SIEM is designed to improve segmentation of salient objects, which helps further improve their rank predictions. Experimental results show that our proposed network achieves state-of-the-art performances on the salient object ranking task across multiple datasets. 2024 Surface-SOS: Self-Supervised Object Segmentation via Neural Surface Representation
abstract
Self-supervised Object Segmentation (SOS) aims to segment objects without any annotations. Under conditions of multi-camera inputs, the structural, textural and geometrical consistency among each view can be leveraged to achieve fine-grained object segmentation. To make better use of the above information, we propose Surface representation based Self-supervised Object Segmentation (Surface-SOS), a new framework to segment objects for each view by 3D surface representation from multi-view images of a scene. To model high-quality geometry surfaces for complex scenes, we design a novel scene representation scheme, which decomposes the scene into two complementary neural representation modules respectively with a Signed Distance Function (SDF). Moreover, Surface-SOS is able to refine single-view segmentation with multi-view unlabeled images, by introducing coarse segmentation masks as additional input. To the best of our knowledge, Surface-SOS is the first self-supervised approach that leverages neural surface representation to break the dependence on large amounts of annotated data and strong constraints. These constraints typically involve observing target objects against a static background or relying on temporal supervision in videos. Extensive experiments on standard benchmarks including LLFF, CO3D, BlendedMVS, TUM and several real-world scenes show that Surface-SOS always yields finer object masks than its NeRF-based counterparts and surpasses supervised single-view baselines remarkably. 2023 Bridging the Gap: Cross-modal Knowledge Driven Network for Radiology Report Generation
abstract
Radiology report generation aims to generate medical reports based on given medical images, which can alleviate the workload of radiologists and has attracted significant research interest in recent years. However, existing studies have struggled to bridge the gap between the two different modalities (i.e. image and text) and generate clinically accurate reports. This is primarily due to the challenges in modelling the crossmodal mappings and the inefficiency of transferring knowledge across modalities. To address these challenges, in this paper, we propose to leverage a pre-constructed knowledge graph as a shared matrix that bridges the gap between visual and textual information, facilitating cross-modal knowledge transfer. This shared knowledge matrix effectively captures cross-modal mappings and aligns information between images and texts, thereby bridging the gap between modalities. Specifically, we propose a new module for knowledge distillation and preservation that integrates relevant knowledge representations into both visual and textual inputs, facilitating intuitive cross-modal knowledge interaction and enhancing the clinical accuracy of the generated reports. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets show the effectiveness of our method, outperforming state-of-the-arts in report generation.

2023 Multi-view Self-supervised Disentanglement for General Image Denoising
abstract
With its significant performance improvements, the deep learning paradigm has become a standard tool for modern image denoisers. While promising performance has been shown on seen noise distributions, existing approaches often suffer from generalisation to unseen noise types or general and real noise. It is understandable as the model is designed to learn paired mapping (e.g. from a noisy image to its clean version). In this paper, we instead propose to learn to disentangle the noisy image, under the intuitive assumption that different corrupted versions of the same clean image share a common latent space. A self-supervised learning framework is proposed to achieve the goal, without looking at the latent clean image. By taking two different corrupted versions of the same image as input, the proposed Multi-view Self-supervised Disentanglement (MeD) approach learns to disentangle the latent clean features from the corruptions and recover the clean image consequently. Extensive experimental analysis on both synthetic and real noise shows the superiority of the proposed method over prior self-supervised approaches, especially on unseen novel noise types. On real noise, the proposed method even outperforms its supervised counterparts by over 3 dB.

2023 Diffuse3D: Wide-Angle 3D Photography via Bilateral Diffusion
abstract
This paper aims to resolve the challenging problem of wide-angle novel view synthesis from a single image, a.k.a. wide-angle 3D photography. Existing approaches rely on local context and treat them equally to inpaint occluded RGB and depth regions, which fail to deal with large-region occlusion (i.e., observing from an extreme angle) and foreground layers might blend into background inpainting. To address the above issues, we propose Diffuse3D which employs a pre-trained diffusion model for global synthesis, while amending the model to activate depth-aware inference. Our key insight is to alter the convolution mechanism in the denoising process. We inject depth information into the denoising convolution operation with bilateral kernels, i.e., a depth kernel and a spatial kernel, to consider layered correlations among pixels. In this way, foreground regions are overlooked in background inpainting and only pixels close in depth are leveraged. On the other hand, we propose a global-local balancing approach to maximize both contextual understandings. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in novel view synthesis, especially in wide-angle scenarios. More importantly, our method does not require any training and is a plug-and-play module that can be integrated with any diffusion model. 2023 CL-MVSNet: Unsupervised Multi-view Stereo with Dual-level Contrastive Learning
abstract
Unsupervised Multi-View Stereo (MVS) methods have achieved promising progress recently. However, previous methods primarily depend on the photometric consistency assumption, which may suffer from two limitations: indistinguishable regions and view-dependent effects, e.g., low-textured areas and reflections. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a new dual-level contrastive learning approach, named CL-MVSNet. Specifically, our model integrates two contrastive branches into an unsupervised MVS framework to construct additional supervisory signals. On the one hand, we present an image-level contrastive branch to guide the model to acquire more context awareness, thus leading to more complete depth estimation in indistinguishable regions. On the other hand, we exploit a scene-level contrastive branch to boost the representation ability, improving robustness to view-dependent effects. Moreover, to recover more accurate 3D geometry, we introduce an ℒ0.5 photometric consistency loss, which encourages the model to focus more on accurate points while mitigating the gradient penalty of undesirable ones. Extensive experiments on DTU and Tanks&Temples benchmarks demonstrate that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance among all end-to-end unsupervised MVS frameworks and outperforms its supervised counterpart by a considerable margin without fine-tuning.

2023 CoinSeg: Contrast Inter- and Intra- Class Representations for Incremental Segmentation
abstract
Class incremental semantic segmentation aims to strike a balance between the model’s stability and plasticity by maintaining old knowledge while adapting to new concepts. However, most state-of-the-art methods use the freeze strategy for stability, which compromises the model’s plasticity. In contrast, releasing parameter training for plasticity could lead to the best performance for all categories, but this requires discriminative feature representation. Therefore, we prioritize the model’s plasticity and propose the Contrast inter- and intra-class representations for Incremental Segmentation (CoinSeg), which pursues discriminative representations for flexible parameter tuning. Inspired by the Gaussian mixture model that samples from a mixture of Gaussian distributions, CoinSeg emphasizes intra-class diversity with multiple contrastive representation centroids. Specifically, we use mask proposals to identify regions with strong objectness that are likely to be diverse instances/centroids of a category. These mask proposals are then used for contrastive representations to reinforce intra-class diversity. Meanwhile, to avoid bias from intra-class diversity, we also apply category-level pseudo-labels to enhance category-level consistency and inter-category diversity. Additionally, CoinSeg ensures the model’s stability and alleviates forgetting through a specific flexible tuning strategy. 2022 Mining Unseen Classes via Regional Objectness: A Simple Baseline for Incremental Segmentation
abstract
Incremental or continual learning has been extensively studied for image classification tasks to alleviate catastrophic forgetting, a phenomenon in which earlier learned knowledge is forgotten when learning new concepts. For class incremental semantic segmentation, such a phenomenon often becomes much worse due to the semantic shift of the background class, \ie, some concepts learned at previous stages are assigned to the background class at the current training stage, therefore, significantly reducing the performance of these old concepts. To address this issue, we propose a simple yet effective method in this paper, named Mining unseen Classes via Regional Objectness (MicroSeg). Our MicroSeg is based on the assumption that \emph{background regions with strong objectness possibly belong to those concepts in the historical or future stages}. Therefore, to avoid forgetting old knowledge at the current training stage, our MicroSeg first splits the given image into hundreds of segment proposals with a proposal generator. Those segment proposals with strong objectness from the background are then clustered and assigned new defined labels during the optimization. In this way, the distribution characterizes of old concepts in the feature space could be better perceived, relieving the catastrophic forgetting caused by the semantic shift of the background class accordingly. We conduct extensive experiments on Pascal VOC and ADE20K, and competitive results well demonstrate the effectiveness of our MicroSeg. Code is available at \href{https://github.com/zkzhang98/MicroSeg}{\textcolor{orange}{\texttt{https://github.com/zkzhang98/MicroSeg}}}.

2022 Self-Supervised Video Representation Learning by Uncovering Spatio-Temporal Statistics
abstract
This paper proposes a novel pretext task to address the self-supervised video representation learning problem. Specifically, given an unlabeled video clip, we compute a series of spatio-temporal statistical summaries, such as the spatial location and dominant direction of the largest motion, the spatial location and dominant color of the largest color diversity along the temporal axis, etc. Then a neural network is built and trained to yield the statistical summaries given the video frames as inputs. In order to alleviate the learning difficulty, we employ several spatial partitioning patterns to encode rough spatial locations instead of exact spatial Cartesian coordinates. Our approach is inspired by the observation that human visual system is sensitive to rapidly changing contents in the visual field, and only needs impressions about rough spatial locations to understand the visual contents. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments with four 3D backbone networks, i.e., C3D, 3D-ResNet, R(2+1)D and S3D-G. The results show that our approach outperforms the existing approaches across these backbone networks on four downstream video analysis tasks including action recognition, video retrieval, dynamic scene recognition, and action similarity labeling. 2022 Affinity Attention Graph Neural Network for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Weakly supervised semantic segmentation is receiving great attention due to its low human annotation cost. In this paper, we aim to tackle bounding box supervised semantic segmentation, i.e., training accurate semantic segmentation models using bounding box annotations as supervision. To this end, we propose affinity attention graph neural network ($A^2$A2GNN). Following previous practices, we first generate pseudo semantic-aware seeds, which are then formed into semantic graphs based on our newly proposed affinity Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Then the built graphs are input to our$A^2$A2GNN, in which an affinity attention layer is designed to acquire the short- and long- distance information from soft graph edges to accurately propagate semantic labels from the confident seeds to the unlabeled pixels. However, to guarantee the precision of the seeds, we only adopt a limited number of confident pixel seed labels for$A^2$A2GNN, which may lead to insufficient supervision for training. To alleviate this issue, we further introduce a new loss function and a consistency-checking mechanism to leverage the bounding box constraint, so that more reliable guidance can be included for the model optimization. Experiments show that our approach achieves new state-of-the-art performances on Pascal VOC 2012 datasets (val: 76.5 percent, test: 75.2 percent). More importantly, our approach can be readily applied to bounding box supervised instance segmentation task or other weakly supervised semantic segmentation tasks, with state-of-the-art or comparable performance among almot all weakly supervised tasks on PASCAL VOC or COCO dataset. 2022 Facial Anatomical Landmark Detection Using Regularized Transfer Learning With Application to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Recognition
abstract
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) caused by prenatal alcohol exposure can result in a series of cranio-facial anomalies, and behavioral and neurocognitive problems. Current diagnosis of FAS is typically done by identifying a set of facial characteristics, which are often obtained by manual examination. Anatomical landmark detection, which provides rich geometric information, is important to detect the presence of FAS associated facial anomalies. This imaging application is characterized by large variations in data appearance and limited availability of labeled data. Current deep learning-based heatmap regression methods designed for facial landmark detection in natural images assume availability of large datasets and are therefore not well-suited for this application. To address this restriction, we develop a new regularized transfer learning approach that exploits the knowledge of a network learned on large facial recognition datasets. In contrast to standard transfer learning which focuses on adjusting the pre-trained weights, the proposed learning approach regularizes the model behavior. It explicitly reuses the rich visual semantics of a domain-similar source model on the target task data as an additional supervisory signal for regularizing landmark detection optimization. Specifically, we develop four regularization constraints for the proposed transfer learning, including constraining the feature outputs from classification and intermediate layers, as well as matching activation attention maps in both spatial and channel levels. Experimental evaluation on a collected clinical imaging dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach can effectively improve model generalizability under limited training samples, and is advantageous to other approaches in the literature.

2022 Mask-Guided Deformation Adaptive Network for Human Parsing
abstract
Due to the challenges of densely compacted body parts, nonrigid clothing items, and severe overlap in crowd scenes, human parsing needs to focus more on multilevel feature representations compared to general scene parsing tasks. Based on this observation, we propose to introduce the auxiliary task of human mask and edge detection to facilitate human parsing. Different from human parsing, which exploits the discriminative features of each category, human mask and edge detection emphasizes the boundaries of semantic parsing regions and the difference between foreground humans and background clutter, which benefits the parsing predictions of crowd scenes and small human parts. Specifically, we extract human mask and edge labels from the human parsing annotations and train a shared encoder with three independent decoders for the three mutually beneficial tasks. Furthermore, the decoder feature maps of the human mask prediction branch are further exploited as attention maps, indicating human regions to facilitate the decoding process of human parsing and human edge detection. In addition to these auxiliary tasks, we further alleviate the problem of deformed clothing items under various human poses by tracking the deformation patterns with the deformable convolution. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method can achieve superior performance against state-of-the-art methods on both single and multiple human parsing datasets. 2021 Scene Context-Aware Salient Object Detection
abstract
Salient object detection identifies objects in an image that grab visual attention. Although contextual features are considered in recent literature, they often fail in real-world complex scenarios. We observe that this is mainly due to two issues: First, most existing datasets consist of simple foregrounds and backgrounds that hardly represent real-life scenarios. Second, current methods only learn contextual features of salient objects, which are insufficient to model high-level semantics for saliency reasoning in complex scenes. To address these problems, we first construct a new large-scale dataset with complex scenes in this paper. We then propose a context-aware learning approach to explicitly exploit the semantic scene contexts. Specifically, two modules are proposed to achieve the goal: 1) a Semantic Scene Context Refinement module to enhance contextual features learned from salient objects with scene context, and 2) a Contextual Instance Transformer to learn contextual relations between objects and scene context. To our knowledge, such high-level semantic contextual information of image scenes is under-explored for saliency detection in the literature. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art techniques in complex scenarios for saliency detection, and transfers well to other existing datasets. 2021 Revitalizing CNN Attention via Transformers in Self-Supervised Visual Representation Learning
abstract
Studies on self-supervised visual representation learning (SSL) improve encoder backbones to discriminate training samples without labels. While CNN encoders via SSL achieve comparable recognition performance to those via supervised learning, their network attention is under-explored for further improvement. Motivated by the transformers that explore visual attention effectively in recognition scenarios, we propose a CNN Attention REvitalization (CARE) framework to train attentive CNN encoders guided by transformers in SSL. The proposed CARE framework consists of a CNN stream (C-stream) and a transformer stream (T-stream), where each stream contains two branches. C-stream follows an existing SSL framework with two CNN encoders, two projectors, and a predictor. T-stream contains two transformers, two projectors, and a predictor. T-stream connects to CNN encoders and is in parallel to the remaining C-Stream. During training, we perform SSL in both streams simultaneously and use the T-stream output to supervise C-stream. The features from CNN encoders are modulated in T-stream for visual attention enhancement and become suitable for the SSL scenario. We use these modulated features to supervise C-stream for learning attentive CNN encoders. To this end, we revitalize CNN attention by using transformers as guidance. Experiments on several standard visual recognition benchmarks, including image classification, object detection, and semantic segmentation, show that the proposed CARE framework improves CNN encoder backbones to the state-of-the-art performance.

2021 Few-Shot Breast Cancer Metastases Classification via Unsupervised Cell Ranking
abstract
Tumor metastases detection is of great importance for the treatment of breast cancer patients. Various CNN (convolutional neural network) based methods get excellent performance in object detection/segmentation. However, the detection of metastases in hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained whole-slide images (WSI) is still challenging mainly due to two aspects. (1) The resolution of the image is too large. (2) lacking labeled training data. Whole-slide images generally stored in a multi-resolution structure with multiple downsampled tiles. It is difficult to feed the whole image into memory without compression. Moreover, labeling images for the pathologists are time-consuming and expensive. In this paper, we study the problem of detecting breast cancer metastases in the pathological image on patch level. To address the abovementioned challenges, we propose a few-shot learning method to classify whether an image patch contains tumor cells. Specifically, we propose a patch-level unsupervised cell ranking approach, which only relies on images with limited labels. The main idea of the proposed method is that when cropping a patch A from the WSI and further cropping a sub-patch B from A, the cell number of A is always larger than that of B. Based on this observation, we make use of the unlabeled images to learn the ranking information of cell counting to extract the abstract features. Experimental results show that our method is effective to improve the patch-level classification accuracy, compared to the traditional supervised method. 2021 Multi-View Face Synthesis via Progressive Face Flow
abstract
Existing GAN-based multi-view face synthesis methods rely heavily on "creating" faces, and thus they struggle in reproducing the faithful facial texture and fail to preserve identity when undergoing a large angle rotation. In this paper, we combat this problem by dividing the challenging large-angle face synthesis into a series of easy small-angle rotations, and each of them is guided by a face flow to maintain faithful facial details. In particular, we propose a Face Flow-guided Generative Adversarial Network (FFlowGAN) that is specifically trained for small-angle synthesis. The proposed network consists of two modules, a face flow module that aims to compute a dense correspondence between the input and target faces. It provides strong guidance to the second module, face synthesis module, for emphasizing salient facial texture. We apply FFlowGAN multiple times to progressively synthesize different views, and therefore facial features can be propagated to the target view from the very beginning. All these multiple executions are cascaded and trained end-to-end with a unified back-propagation, and thus we ensure each intermediate step contributes to the final result. Extensive experiments demonstrate the proposed divide-and-conquer strategy is effective, and our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on four benchmark datasets qualitatively and quantitatively.

2020 When AWGN-Based Denoiser Meets Real Noises
abstract
Discriminative learning based image denoisers have achieved promising performance on synthetic noises such as Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). The synthetic noises adopted in most previous work are pixel-independent, but real noises are mostly spatially/channel-correlated and spatially/channel-variant. This domain gap yields unsatisfied performance on images with real noises if the model is only trained with AWGN. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to boost the performance of a real image denoiser which is trained only with synthetic pixel-independent noise data dominated by AWGN. First, we train a deep model that consists of a noise estimator and a denoiser with mixed AWGN and Random Value Impulse Noise (RVIN). We then investigate Pixel-shuffle Down-sampling (PD) strategy to adapt the trained model to real noises. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed approach. Notably, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on real sRGB images in the DND benchmark among models trained with synthetic noises. 2020 Inferring Attention Shift Ranks of Objects for Image Saliency
abstract
Psychology studies and behavioural observation show that humans shift their attention from one location to another when viewing an image of a complex scene. This is due to the limited capacity of the human visual system in simultaneously processing multiple visual inputs. The sequential shifting of attention on objects in a non-task oriented viewing can be seen as a form of saliency ranking. Although there are methods proposed for predicting saliency rank, they are not able to model this human attention shift well, as they are primarily based on ranking saliency values from binary prediction. Following psychological studies, in this paper, we propose to predict the saliency rank by inferring human attention shift. Due to the lack of such data, we first construct a large-scale salient object ranking dataset. The saliency rank of objects is defined by the order that an observer attends to these objects based on attention shift. The final saliency rank is an average across the saliency ranks of multiple observers. We then propose a learning-based CNN to leverage both bottom-up and top-down attention mechanisms to predict the saliency rank. Experimental results show that the proposed network achieves state-of-the-art performances on salient object rank prediction. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/SirisAvishek/Attention_Shift_Ranks.

2020 Tactile Sketch Saliency
abstract
In this paper, we aim to understand the functionality of 2D sketches by predicting how humans would interact with the objects depicted by sketches in real life. Given a 2D sketch, we learn to predict a tactile saliency map for it, which represents where humans would grasp, press, or touch the object depicted by the sketch. We hypothesize that understanding 3D structure and category of the sketched object would help such tactile saliency reasoning. We thus propose to jointly predict the tactile saliency, depth map and semantic category of a sketch in an end-to-end learning-based framework. To train our model, we propose to synthesize training data by leveraging a collection of 3D shapes with 3D tactile saliency information. Experiments show that our model can predict accurate and plausible tactile saliency maps for both synthetic and real sketches. In addition, we also demonstrate that our predicted tactile saliency is beneficial to sketch recognition and sketch-based 3D shape retrieval, and enables us to establish part-based functional correspondences among sketches.

2020 FormNet: Formatted Learning for Image Restoration
abstract
In this paper, we propose a deep CNN to tackle the image restoration problem by learning formatted information. Previous deep learning based methods directly learn the mapping from corrupted images to clean images, and may suffer from the gradient exploding/vanishing problems of deep neural networks. We propose to address the image restoration problem by learning the structured details and recovering the latent clean image together, from the shared information between the corrupted image and the latent image. In addition, instead of learning the pure difference (corruption), we propose to add a residual formatting layer and an adversarial block to format the information to structured one, which allows the network to converge faster and boosts the performance. Furthermore, we propose a cross-level loss net to ensure both pixel-level accuracy and semantic-level visual quality. Evaluations on public datasets show that the proposed method performs favorably against existing approaches quantitatively and qualitatively.

2020 Connecting Image Denoising and High-Level Vision Tasks via Deep Learning
abstract
Image denoising and high-level vision tasks are usually handled independently in the conventional practice of computer vision, and their connection is fragile. In this paper, we cope with the two jointly and explore the mutual influence between them with the focus on two questions, namely (1) how image denoising can help improving high-level vision tasks, and (2) how the semantic information from high-level vision tasks can be used to guide image denoising. First for image denoising we propose a convolutional neural network in which convolutions are conducted in various spatial resolutions via downsampling and upsampling operations in order to fuse and exploit contextual information on different scales. Second we propose a deep neural network solution that cascades two modules for image denoising and various high-level tasks, respectively, and use the joint loss for updating only the denoising network via backpropagation. We experimentally show that on one hand, the proposed denoiser has the generality to overcome the performance degradation of different high-level vision tasks. On the other hand, with the guidance of high-level vision information, the denoising network produces more visually appealing results. Extensive experiments demonstrate the benefit of exploiting image semantics simultaneously for image denoising and highlevel vision tasks via deep learning. 2020 Stereoscopic Image Generation From Light Field With Disparity Scaling and Super-Resolution
abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel method to generate stereoscopic images from light-field images with the intended depth range and simultaneously perform image super-resolution. Subject to the small baseline of neighboring subaperture views and low spatial resolution of light-field images captured using compact commercial light-field cameras, the disparity range of any two subaperture views is usually very small. We propose a method to control the disparity range of the target stereoscopic images with linear or nonlinear disparity scaling and properly resolve the disocclusion problem with the aid of a smooth energy term previously used for texture synthesis. The left and right views of the target stereoscopic image are simultaneously generated by a unified optimization framework, which preserves content coherence between the left and right views by a coherence energy term. The disparity range of the target stereoscopic image can be larger than that of the input light field image. This benefits many light field image-based applications, e.g., displaying light field images on various stereo display devices and generating stereoscopic panoramic images from a light field image montage. An extensive experimental evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our method.

2020 Self-Supervised Ultrasound to MRI Fetal Brain Image Synthesis
abstract
Fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers exquisite images of the developing brain but is not suitable for second-trimester anomaly screening, for which ultrasound (US) is employed. Although expert sonographers are adept at reading US images, MR images which closely resemble anatomical images are much easier for non-experts to interpret. Thus in this article we propose to generate MR-like images directly from clinical US images. In medical image analysis such a capability is potentially useful as well, for instance for automatic US-MRI registration and fusion. The proposed model is end-to-end trainable and self-supervised without any external annotations. Specifically, based on an assumption that the US and MRI data share a similar anatomical latent space, we first utilise a network to extract the shared latent features, which are then used for MRI synthesis. Since paired data is unavailable for our study (and rare in practice), pixel-level constraints are infeasible to apply. We instead propose to enforce the distributions to be statistically indistinguishable, by adversarial learning in both the image domain and feature space. To regularise the anatomical structures between US and MRI during synthesis, we further propose an adversarial structural constraint. A new cross-modal attention technique is proposed to utilise non-local spatial information, by encouraging multi-modal knowledge fusion and propagation. We extend the approach to consider the case where 3D auxiliary information (e.g., 3D neighbours and a 3D location index) from volumetric data is also available, and show that this improves image synthesis. The proposed approach is evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively with comparison to real fetal MR images and other approaches to synthesis, demonstrating its feasibility of synthesising realistic MR images.

2020 Referring Image Segmentation by Generative Adversarial Learning
abstract
Referring expression is a kind of language expression being used for referring to particular objects. In this paper, we focus on the problem of image segmentation from natural language referring expressions. Existing works tackle this problem by augmenting the convolutional semantic segmentation networks with an LSTM sentence encoder, which is optimized by a pixel-wise classification loss. We argue that the distribution similarity between the inference and ground truth plays an important role in referring image segmentation. Therefore we introduce a complementary loss considering the consistency between the two distributions. To this end, we propose to train the referring image segmentation model in a generative adversarial fashion, which well addresses the distribution similarity problem. In particular, the proposed adversarial semantic guidance network (ASGN) includes the following advantages: a) more detailed visual information is incorporated by the detail enhancement; b) semantic information counteracts the word embedding impact; c) the proposed adversarial learning approach relieves the distribution inconsistencies. Experimental results on four standard datasets show significant improvements over all the compared baseline models, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method.

2019 Adaptation Strategies for Applying AWGN-Based Denoiser to Realistic Noise
abstract
Discriminative learning based denoising model trained with Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) performs well on synthesized noise. However, realistic noise can be spatialvariant, signal-dependent and a mixture of complicated noises. In this paper, we explore multiple strategies for applying an AWGN-based denoiser to realistic noise. Specifically, we trained a deep network integrating noise estimating and denoiser with mixed Gaussian (AWGN) and Random Value Impulse Noise (RVIN). To adapt the model to realistic noises, we investigated multi-channel, multi-scale and super-resolution approaches. Our preliminary results demonstrated the effectiveness of the newly-proposed noise model and adaptation strategies.

2019 Geometry-Aware Distillation for Indoor Semantic Segmentation
abstract
It has been shown that jointly reasoning the 2D appearance and 3D information from RGB-D domains is beneficial to indoor scene semantic segmentation. However, most existing approaches require accurate depth map as input to segment the scene which severely limits their applications. In this paper, we propose to jointly infer the semantic and depth information by distilling geometry-aware embedding to eliminate such strong constraint while still exploiting the helpful depth domain information. In addition, we use this learned embedding to improve the quality of semantic segmentation, through a proposed geometry-aware propagation framework followed by several multi-level skip feature fusion blocks. By decoupling the single task prediction network into two joint tasks of semantic segmentation and geometry embedding learning, together with the proposed information propagation and feature fusion architecture, our method is shown to perform favorably against state-of-the-art methods for semantic segmentation on publicly available challenging indoor datasets.

2019 Self-Supervised Spatio-Temporal Representation Learning for Videos by Predicting Motion and Appearance Statistics
abstract
We address the problem of video representation learning without human-annotated labels. While previous efforts address the problem by designing novel self-supervised tasks using video data, the learned features are merely on a frame-by-frame basis, which are not applicable to many video analytic tasks where spatio-temporal features are prevailing. In this paper we propose a novel self-supervised approach to learn spatio-temporal features for video representation. Inspired by the success of two-stream approaches in video classification, we propose to learn visual features by regressing both motion and appearance statistics along spatial and temporal dimensions, given only the input video data. Specifically, we extract statistical concepts (fast-motion region and the corresponding dominant direction, spatio-temporal color diversity, dominant color, etc.) from simple patterns in both spatial and temporal domains. Unlike prior puzzles that are even hard for humans to solve, the proposed approach is consistent with human inherent visual habits and therefore easy to answer. We conduct extensive experiments with C3D to validate the effectiveness of our proposed approach. The experiments show that our approach can significantly improve the performance of C3D when applied to video classification tasks. 2019 Ground-Aware Point Cloud Semantic Segmentation for Autonomous Driving
abstract
Semantic understanding of 3D scenes is essential for autonomous driving. Although a number of efforts have been devoted to semantic segmentation of dense point clouds, the great sparsity of 3D LiDAR data poses significant challenges in autonomous driving. In this paper, we work on the semantic segmentation problem of extremely sparse LiDAR point clouds with specific consideration of the ground as reference. In particular, we propose a ground-aware framework that well solves the ambiguity caused by data sparsity. We employ a multi-section plane fitting approach to roughly extract ground points to assist segmentation of objects on the ground. Based on the roughly extracted ground points, our approach implicitly integrates the ground information in a weakly-supervised manner and utilizes ground-aware features with a new ground-aware attention module. The proposed ground-aware attention module captures long-range dependence between ground and objects, which significantly facilitates the segmentation of small objects that only consist of a few points in extremely sparse point clouds. Extensive experiments on two large-scale LiDAR point cloud datasets for autonomous driving demonstrate that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance both quantitatively and qualitatively.

2017 Delving into Salient Object Subitizing and Detection
abstract
Subitizing (i.e., instant judgement on the number) and detection of salient objects are human inborn abilities. These two tasks influence each other in the human visual system. In this paper, we delve into the complementarity of these two tasks. We propose a multi-task deep neural network with weight prediction for salient object detection, where the parameters of an adaptive weight layer are dynamically determined by an auxiliary subitizing network. The numerical representation of salient objects is therefore embedded into the spatial representation. The proposed joint network can be trained end-to-end using backpropagation. Experiments show the proposed multi-task network outperforms existing multi-task architectures, and the auxiliary subitizing network provides strong guidance to salient object detection by reducing false positives and producing coherent saliency maps. Moreover, the proposed method is an unconstrained method able to handle images with/without salient objects. Finally, we show state-of-the-art performance on different salient object datasets.

2017 Color Image-Guided Boundary-Inconsistent Region Refinement for Stereo Matching
abstract
Cost computation, cost aggregation, disparity optimization, and disparity refinement are the four main steps for stereo matching. While the first three steps have been widely investigated, few efforts have been taken on disparity refinement. In this paper, we propose a color image-guided disparity refinement method to further remove the boundary-inconsistent regions on disparity map. First, the origins of boundary-inconsistent regions are analyzed. Then, these regions are detected with the proposed hybrid-superpixel-based strategy. Finally, the detected boundary-inconsistent regions are refined by a modified weighted median filtering method. Experimental results on various stereo matching conditions validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, depth maps obtained by active depth acquisition devices like Kinect can also be well refined with our proposed method.

2014 Cost-volume filtering-based stereo matching with improved matching cost and secondary refinement
abstract
Recent cost-volume filtering-based local stereo methods have achieved comparable accuracy with global methods. However, there are still some significant outliers existing in the final disparity map. In this paper, we propose a cost-volume filtering-based local stereo matching method that employs a new combined cost and a novel secondary disparity refinement mechanism. The combined cost is formulated by a modified color census transform, truncated absolute differences of color and gradients. Symmetric guided filter is used for the cost aggregation. Different from traditional stereo matching, a novel secondary disparity refinement is proposed to further remove remaining outliers. Experimental results on Mid-dlebury benchmark show that our method ranks the 5thout of the 144 submitted methods, and is the best cost-volume filtering-based local method. Furthermore, experiments on real world sequences also validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
