| 2018 | Dynamic Truth Discovery on Numerical DataabstractTruth discovery aims at obtaining the most credible information from multiple sources that provide noisy and conflicting values. Due to the ubiquitous existence of data conflict in practice, truth discovery has been attracting a lot of research attention recently. Unfortunately, existing truth discovery models all miss an important issue of truth discovery - the truth evolution problem. In many real-life scenarios, the latent true value often keeps changing dynamically over time instead of staying static. We study the dynamic truth discovery problem in the space of numerical truth discovery. This problem cannot be addressed by existing models because of the new challenges of capturing time-evolving source dependency in a continuous space as well as handling missing data on the fly. We propose a model named EvolvT for dynamic truth discovery on numerical data. With the hidden Markov framework, EvolvT captures three key aspects of dynamic truth discovery with a unified model: truth transition regularity, source quality, and source dependency. The most distinguishable feature of the modeling part of EvolvT is that it employs Kalman filtering to model truth evolution. As such, EvolvT not only can principally infer source dependency in a continuous space, but also can handle missing data in a natural way. We establish an expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm for parameter inference of EvolvT and present an efficient online version for the parameter inference procedure. Our experiments on real-world applications demonstrate its advantages over the state-of-the-art truth discovery approaches. | 2018 | pg-Causality: Identifying Spatiotemporal Causal Pathways for Air Pollutants with Urban Big DataabstractMany countries are suffering from severe air pollution. Understanding how different air pollutants accumulate and propagate is critical to making relevant public policies. In this paper, we use urban big data (air quality data and meteorological data) to identify the spatiotemporal (ST) causal pathways for air pollutants. This problem is challenging because: (1) there are numerous noisy and low-pollution periods in the raw air quality data, which may lead to unreliable causality analysis; (2) for large-scale data in the ST space, the computational complexity of constructing a causal structure is very high; and (3) the ST causal pathways are complex due to the interactions of multiple pollutants and the influence of environmental factors. Therefore, we present pg-Causality, a novel pattern-aided graphical causality analysis approach that combines the strengths of pattern mining and Bayesian learning to efficiently identify the ST causal pathways. First, pattern mining helps suppress the noise by capturing frequent evolving patterns (FEPs) of each monitoring sensor, and greatly reduce the complexity by selecting the pattern-matched sensors as “causers”. Then, Bayesian learning carefully encodes the local and ST causal relations with a Gaussian Bayesian Network (GBN)-based graphical model, which also integrates environmental influences to minimize biases in the final results. We evaluate our approach with three real-world data sets containing 982 air quality sensors in 128 cities, in three regions of China from 01-Jun-2013 to 31-Dec-2016. Results show that our approach outperforms the traditional causal structure learning methods in time efficiency, inference accuracy and interpretability. | 2017 | Unsupervised Concept Categorization and Extraction from Scientific Document TitlesabstractThis paper studies the automated categorization and extraction of scientific concepts from titles of scientific articles, in order to gain a deeper understanding of their key contributions and facilitate the construction of a generic academic knowledgebase. Towards this goal, we propose an unsupervised, domain-independent, and scalable two-phase algorithm to type and extract key concept mentions into aspects of interest (e.g., Techniques, Applications, etc.). In the first phase of our algorithm we propose PhraseType, a probabilistic generative model which exploits textual features and limited POS tags to broadly segment text snippets into aspect-typed phrases. We extend this model to simultaneously learn aspect-specific features and identify academic domains in multi-domain corpora, since the two tasks mutually enhance each other. In the second phase, we propose an approach based on adaptor grammars to extract fine grained concept mentions from the aspect-typed phrases without the need for any external resources or human effort, in a purely data-driven manner. We apply our technique to study literature from diverse scientific domains and show significant gains over state-of-the-art concept extraction techniques. We also present a qualitative analysis of the results obtained. Adit Krishnan, Aravind Sankar, Shi Zhi, Jiawei Han 0001 |

| 2017 | ClaimVerif: A Real-time Claim Verification System Using the Web and Fact DatabasesabstractOur society is increasingly digitalized. Every day, a tremendous amount of information is being created, shared, and digested through all kinds of cyber channels. Although people can easily acquire information from various sources (social media, news articles, etc.), the truthfulness of most received information remains unverified. In many real-life scenarios, false information has become the de facto cause that leads to detrimental decision makings, and techniques that can automatically filter false information are highly demanded. However, verifying whether a piece of information is trustworthy is difficult because: (1) selecting candidate snippets for fact checking is nontrivial; and (2) detecting supporting evidences, i.e. stances, suffers from the difficulty of measuring the similarity between claims and related evidences. We build ClaimVerif, a claim verification system that not only provides credibility assessment for any user-given query claim, but also rationales the assessment results with supporting evidences. ClaimVerif can automatically select the stances from millions of documents and employs two-step training to justify the opinions of the stances. Furthermore, combined with the credibility of stances sources, ClaimVerif degrades the score of stances from untrustworthy sources and alleviates the negative effects from rumor spreaders. Our empirical evaluations show that ClaimVerif achieves both high accuracy and efficiency in different claim verification tasks. It can be highly useful in practical applications by providing multi-dimension analysis for the suspicious statements, including the stances, opinions, source credibility and estimated judgements. | 2017 | Heterogeneous Supervision for Relation Extraction: A Representation Learning ApproachabstractRelation extraction is a fundamental task in information extraction. Most existing methods have heavy reliance on annotations labeled by human experts, which are costly and time-consuming.To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel framework, REHESSION, to conduct relation extractor learning using annotations from heterogeneous information source, e.g., knowledge base and domain heuristics. These annotations, referred as heterogeneous supervision, often conflict with each other, which brings a new challenge to the original relation extraction task: how to infer the true label from noisy labels for a given instance.Identifying context information as the backbone of both relation extraction and true label discovery, we adopt embedding techniques to learn the distributed representations of context, which bridges all components with mutual enhancement in an iterative fashion.Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of REHESSION over the state-of-the-art. | 2017 | Link Prediction across Aligned Networks with Sparse and Low Rank Matrix EstimationabstractUsers' addiction to online social networks is discovered to be highly correlated with their social connections in the networks. Dense social connections can effectively help online social networks retain their active users and improve the social network services. Therefore, it is of great importance to make a good prediction of the social links among users. Meanwhile, to enjoy more social network services, users nowadays are usually involved in multiple online social networks simultaneously. Formally, the social networks which share a number of common users are defined as the "aligned networks". With the information transferred from multiple aligned social networks, we can gain a more comprehensive knowledge about the social preferences of users in the pre-specified target network, which will benefit the social link prediction task greatly. However, when transferring the knowledge from other aligned source networks to the target network, there usually exists a shift in information distribution between different networks, namely domain difference. In this paper, we study the social link prediction problem of the target network, which is aligned with multiple social networks concurrently. To accommodate the domain difference issue, we project the features extracted for links from different aligned networks into a shared lower-dimensional feature space. Moreover, users in social networks usually tend to form communities and would only connect to a small number of users. Thus, the target network structure has both the low-rank and sparse properties. We propose a novel optimization framework, SLAMPRED, to combine both these two properties aforementioned of the target network and the information of multiple aligned networks with nice domain adaptations. Since the objective function is a linear combination of convex and concave functions involving nondifferentiable regularizers, we propose a novel optimization method to iteratively solve it. Extensive experiments have been done on real-world aligned social networks, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model. | 2015 | FaitCrowd: Fine Grained Truth Discovery for Crowdsourced Data AggregationabstractIn crowdsourced data aggregation task, there exist conflicts in the answers provided by large numbers of sources on the same set of questions. The most important challenge for this task is to estimate source reliability and select answers that are provided by high-quality sources. Existing work solves this problem by simultaneously estimating sources' reliability and inferring questions' true answers (i.e., the truths). However, these methods assume that a source has the same reliability degree on all the questions, but ignore the fact that sources' reliability may vary significantly among different topics. To capture various expertise levels on different topics, we propose FaitCrowd, a fine grained truth discovery model for the task of aggregating conflicting data collected from multiple users/sources. FaitCrowd jointly models the process of generating question content and sources' provided answers in a probabilistic model to estimate both topical expertise and true answers simultaneously. This leads to a more precise estimation of source reliability. Therefore, FaitCrowd demonstrates better ability to obtain true answers for the questions compared with existing approaches. Experimental results on two real-world datasets show that FaitCrowd can significantly reduce the error rate of aggregation compared with the state-of-the-art multi-source aggregation approaches due to its ability of learning topical expertise from question content and collected answers. | 2015 | Modeling Truth Existence in Truth DiscoveryabstractWhen integrating information from multiple sources, it is common to encounter conflicting answers to the same question. Truth discovery is to infer the most accurate and complete integrated answers from conflicting sources. In some cases, there exist questions for which the true answers are excluded from the candidate answers provided by all sources. Without any prior knowledge, these questions, named no-truth questions, are difficult to be distinguished from the questions that have true answers, named has-truth questions. In particular, these no-truth questions degrade the precision of the answer integration system. We address such a challenge by introducing source quality, which is made up of three fine-grained measures: silent rate, false spoken rate and true spoken rate. By incorporating these three measures, we propose a probabilistic graphical model, which simultaneously infers truth as well as source quality without any a priori training involving ground truth answers. Moreover, since inferring this graphical model requires parameter tuning of the prior of truth, we propose an initialization scheme based upon a quantity named truth existence score, which synthesizes two indicators, namely, participation rate and consistency rate. Compared with existing methods, our method can effectively filter out no-truth questions, which results in more accurate source quality estimation. Consequently, our method provides more accurate and complete answers to both has-truth and no-truth questions. Experiments on three real-world datasets illustrate the notable advantage of our method over existing state-of-the-art truth discovery methods.
