2023 Immersive Video Postprocessing for Efficient Video Coding
abstract
This paper describes two methods for increasing the efficiency of the MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) coding standard. The methods manipulate the MIV-formatted atlas videos by considering the coding principles of the widely used video encoders, enhancing the encoding efficiency for the immersive video content. The first method, patch average color modification removes the constant component of all YCbCr components of each patch within atlases, resulting in the reduction of the number and magnitude of edges within a texture atlas video. The second proposed method changes the dynamic range of the geometry (depth) atlas, adapting to the quality of input depth maps. Both methods proposed by the authors of this paper were included into the Test Model for MPEG Immersive Video (TMIV), which is the reference implementation of the MIV codec. Moreover, the metadata syntax relating to the first proposed method was adopted to the ISO/IEC 23090–12 standard.

2022 IV-PSNR - The Objective Quality Metric for Immersive Video Applications
abstract
This paper presents a new objective quality metric that was adapted to the complex characteristics of immersive video (IV) which is prone to errors caused by processing and compression of multiple input views and virtual view synthesis. The proposed metric, IV-PSNR, contains two techniques that allow for the evaluation of quality loss for typical immersive video distortions: corresponding pixel shift and global component difference. The performed experiments compared the proposal with 31 state-of-the-art quality metrics, showing their performance in the assessment of quality in immersive video coding and processing, and in other applications, using commonly used image quality assessment databases– TID2013 and CVIQ. As presented, IV-PSNR outperforms other metrics in immersive video applications and still can be efficiently used in the evaluation of different images and videos. Moreover, basing the metric on the calculation of PSNR allowed the computational complexity to remain low. Publicly available, efficient implementation of IV-PSNR software was provided by the authors of this paper and is used by ISO/IEC MPEG for evaluation and research on the upcoming MPEG Immersive video (MIV) coding standard.

2021 MPEG Immersive Video Coding Standard
abstract
This article introduces the ISO/IEC MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) standard, MPEG-I Part 12, which is undergoing standardization. The draft MIV standard provides support for viewing immersive volumetric content captured by multiple cameras with six degrees of freedom (6DoF) within a viewing space that is determined by the camera arrangement in the capture rig. The bitstream format and decoding processes of the draft specification along with aspects of the Test Model for Immersive Video (TMIV) reference software encoder, decoder, and renderer are described. The use cases, test conditions, quality assessment methods, and experimental results are provided. In the TMIV, multiple texture and geometry views are coded as atlases of patches using a legacy 2-D video codec, while optimizing for bitrate, pixel rate, and quality. The design of the bitstream format and decoder is based on the visual volumetric video-based coding (V3C) and video-based point cloud compression (V-PCC) standard, MPEG-I Part 5.

2019 Virtual View Synthesis for 3DoF+ Video
abstract
The paper reports a new view synthesis method for omnidirectional video with the ability to slightly displace a virtual viewpoint, i.e. the paper describes a novel synthesis method for 3DoF+ 360 video. This new method is noteworthy because of its high versatility and reliability: the method is appropriate for both perspective and omnidirectional input views, is able to render both perspective and omnidirectional views, and the produced synthetic views differ from the respective ground truth images less than with other view synthesis methods. These important features result from several innovations, e.g., prioritization of input views, efficient inpainting adapted to equirectangular projections, and efficient color correction. The experimental results demonstrate that the new method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods used hitherto.

2019 Impact of Video Streaming Delay on User Experience with Head-Mounted Displays
abstract
Delays in the delivery of immersive video to Head Mounted Devices (HMDs) are considered in the paper. The goal of this paper is to analyze the impact of video streaming latency on user experience with HMDs. The paper reports the results of the subjective quality assessment as a function of delay. The possible practical solutions are identified and, on this base, an experimental model of the considered systems is proposed. In order to properly test the influence of the streaming delay on the quality, the extensive subjective tests have been performed. Interesting conclusions have been drawn, showing that human acceptance of delay of translation of virtual point of viewing is much stronger than for delay of rotation of virtual viewing direction in immersive video. Finally, the influence of such observations on the system architectures is concluded.

2018 A Free-Viewpoint Television System for Horizontal Virtual Navigation
abstract
Free-viewpoint television (FTV) and virtual navigation appear to be hot research topics. In this paper, the authors study the practical development of free-viewpoint television systems that provide the functionality of virtual horizontal navigation around real scenes. The considerations are focused on practical systems that use purely optical depth estimation and might be employed in the next few years. The architectures of such systems are discussed in detail, including acquisition, preprocessing, depth estimation, compression, and presentation. In particular, the optimization of camera locations is discussed, and it is shown that video acquisition using camera pairs is advantageous for scenes with a substantial amount of occlusions. The theoretical considerations are supported by experimental results obtained for standard test multiview video sequences. Furthermore, the paper describes FTV video acquisition systems that consist of modules with pairs of cameras. The modules are sparsely located in arbitrary positions around a scene. Each camera module is equivalent to a video camera with a depth sensor. The hardware requirements, video processing algorithms, and experimental results are reported. In particular, for such systems, a compression technique is discussed that is more efficient than the new three-dimensional HEVC technology. The paper also describes new test video sequences that are obtained from the camera pairs sparsely distributed around scenes.

2017 Demonstration of a simple free viewpoint television system
abstract
The demonstration is aimed at presenting a simple free-viewpoint television system that is under development at Poznań University of Technology, Poznań, Poland. Video acquisition using sparsely distributed pairs of video cameras, the depth estimation from video, the virtual video rendering on a server feature the perspective FTV system. The original depth estimation and view synthesis algorithms ensure good quality of the virtual views generated during virtual walks around a scene. The system is developed for broadcasting sport (e.g. judo, karate, volleyball) and cultural (e.g. amateur or professional theater performances) events, as well as for interactive courses and manuals (medical, cosmetics, dancing, technical etc.).

2017 Graph-based multiview depth estimation using segmentation
abstract
This paper presents a new depth estimation method for multiview systems with arbitrary camera locations. The method exploits the graph cuts method, where vertices of the graph represent segments used for controlling the trade-off between the quality of depth maps and the time of estimation, while preserving the original resolution of a depth map. Moreover, the inter-view consistency of the depth maps, crucial for free-viewpoint television systems, is ensured by introduction of suitable connections in the optimized graph. It makes the proposed method the first that allows generation of spatially-consistent multiview depth maps using segmentation-based estimation. A new method of the adaptive calculation of the smoothing coefficient was also presented. The performance of the proposed algorithm was tested and compared with the state-of-the-art DERS method, showing an significant improvement, both in terms of the depth maps fidelity and the time of estimation.

2016 New results in free-viewpoint television systems for horizontal virtual navigation
abstract
The paper presents the concept of a practical free-viewpoint television system with purely optical depth estimation. The system consists of camera modules that contain pairs or triples of cameras together with the respective microphones. The camera modules can be sparsely located in arbitrary positions around a scene. Each camera module is equivalent to a video camera with a depth sensor and microphones. The hardware requirements, the video and audio processing algorithms and the preliminary experimental results are reported. In particular, for such systems, a compression technique is discussed that is more efficient than the new 3D-HEVC technology. A set of new test sequences obtained with the use of camera pairs are presented.

2016 Multiview synthesis - Improved view synthesis for virtual navigation
abstract
In the paper, we propose a new method for the virtual view synthesis called as Multiview Synthesis. In our approach, virtual views are synthesized using two neighboring real views, but the disoccluded areas are not inpainted, but filled by the information from the further real views - additional views, traditionally not included in the view synthesis. The whole synthesis is performed with triangles rather than with individual pixels. In the proposed Multiview Synthesis, additional steps of adaptive color correction, blurred edge removal and spatial edge blurring are also included. The experimental results show that both the objective and subjective quality of the synthesized views is significantly higher than the quality of views obtained using the state-of-the-art MPEG reference view synthesis software.

2015 A practical approach to acquisition and processing of free viewpoint video
abstract
We deal with the processing of multiview video acquired by the use of practical thus relatively simple acquisition systems that have a limited number of cameras located around a scene on independent tripods. The real-camera locations are nearly arbitrary as it would be required in the real-world Free-Viewpoint Television systems. The appropriate test video sequences are also reported. We describe a family of original extensions and adaptations of the multiview video processing algorithms adapted to arbitrary camera positions around a scene. The techniques constitute the video processing chain for Free-Viewpoint Television as they are aimed at estimating the parameters of such a multi-camera system, video correction, depth estimation and virtual view synthesis. Moreover, we demonstrate the need for new compression technology capable of efficient compression of sparse convergent views. The experimental results for processing the proposed test sequences are reported.
