2023 Visual Tracking of Needle Tip in 2D Ultrasound based on Global Features in a Siamese Architecture
abstract
Ultrasound (US) is widely used in image-guided needle procedures. Correctly tracking the needle tip position in US images during the procedure plays an important role in improving the needle targeting accuracy and patient safety. This paper presents a leaning-based visual tracking network with a Siamese architecture, which makes full use of the attention mechanism to explore the potential of global features and takes advantage of an online target model prediction module to robustly track the needle tip in US images. Several self- and cross-attention modules are applied to learn global features from the whole US image. A discriminative target model is also learned as a complementary part to improve the discriminability of the proposed tracker. The template used during the tracking is updated frequently according to the tracking results to ensure that the tracker can always capture the latest characteristics of the appearance of the needle tip. Experimental results in both phantom and tissue showed that the proposed tracking network was more robust than other state-of-the-art visual trackers. The mean success rates of the proposed tracker are 7.1% and 9.2% higher than the second best performing visual tacker when the needle was inserted by motors and human hands in the tissue experiments.

2022 IDART: An Improved Discrete Tomography Algorithm for Reconstructing Images With Multiple Gray Levels
abstract
The discrete algebraic reconstruction technique has many advantages in computed tomography and electron tomography. However, the number of gray levels and the absolute gray values that should be known in advance are typically not available in experiments especially when there are many gray levels in the image. In this paper, we report an automatic discrete tomography reconstruction algorithm to improve its feasibility in practice, without needing to know these two parameters. In our algorithm, the number of gray levels is estimated by labeling the connected components in the tomogram and the absolute values of them are determined by the modal value of each domain. The proposed algorithm was extensively validated on both simulated and experimental datasets. The results show that our algorithm can accurately recover not only the morphology but also the gray levels of the interested objects, even in the images with multiple gray levels. It is demonstrated that the presented algorithm is robust for eliminating missing wedge artifacts and tolerable for noisy data.

2022 Optimization of Dry Weight Assessment in Hemodialysis Patients via Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Dry weight (DW), defined as the lowest tolerated postdialysis weight following the ultrafiltration (UF) of excess fluid volume, is essential for any dialysis prescription for hemodialysis (HD) patients. However, there is no gold standard for DW assessment, and the difficulty of its accurate assessment increases given individual variations and the dynamic changes caused by the uncertainty of patients' condition. Therefore, the current empirical evaluation process is often crude, imprecise, experience-dependent, and energy-consuming. Here, we highlight the personalized dynamic changes in DW over time rather than the more accurate DW assessments at some point in time and formulate the DW evaluation problem into a sequential decision-making process using the Markov decision process (MDP) framework. A reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm based on a dueling double deep Q-network (Duel-DDQN) is proposed to optimize the DW assessment policy, and a multifaceted inspection is applied to assess policy effectiveness and safety. We utilize ten years of data from the Kidney Disease Center, enrolling 750 HD patients and 243,287 dialysis sessions. Good model calibration is confirmed, and off-policy evaluation demonstrates that our policy outperforms other policies, suggesting a decrease of 7.71% in the expected 5-year mortality rate and of 13.44% in the incidence of intradialytic symptoms compared with those of clinicians' strategy. The RL policy adjusts DW more frequently, responds to DW changes more actively, and observes a larger feature space. It is hoped that the proposed solution will help clinicians assess and monitor DW dynamically, making the estimation process more refined, personalized, and intelligent.
