2024 MSSA: Multispectral Semantic Alignment for Cross-Modality Infrared-RGB Person Reidentification
abstract
The widespread deployment of dual-camera systems has laid a solid foundation for practical applications of infrared (IR)-RGB cross-modality person reidentification (ReID). However, the inherent modality differences between RGB and IR images cause significant intra-class variances in the feature space for individuals of the same identity. Current methods typically employ various network architectures for the image style transfer or extracting modality-invariant features, yet they overlook the information extraction from the most fundamental spectral semantic features. Based on the existing approaches, we propose a multi-spectral semantic alignment (MSSA) architecture aimed at aligning fine-grained spectral semantic features across both intra-modality and inter-modality perspectives. Through modality center semantic alignment (MCSA) learning, we comprehensively mitigate differences in identity features of different modalities. Moreover, to attenuate the discriminative information unique to a single modality, we introduce the modality reliability intensification (MRI) loss to enhance the reliability of identity information. Finally, to tackle the challenge that inter-modality intra-class disparities surpass inter-modality inter-class differences, we leverage the dynamic discriminative center (DDC) loss to further bolster the discriminability of reliable information. Through an extensive experiments conducted on SYSU-MM01, RegDB, and LLCM datasets, we demonstrate the substantial advantages of the proposed MSSA over other state-of-the-art methods.

2021 Slimmable Compressive Autoencoders for Practical Neural Image Compression
abstract
Neural image compression leverages deep neural networks to outperform traditional image codecs in rate-distortion performance. However, the resulting models are also heavy, computationally demanding and generally optimized for a single rate, limiting their practical use. Focusing on practical image compression, we propose slimmable compressive autoencoders (SlimCAEs), where rate (R) and distortion (D) are jointly optimized for different capacities. Once trained, encoders and decoders can be executed at different capacities, leading to different rates and complexities. We show that a successful implementation of Slim-CAEs requires suitable capacity-specific RD tradeoffs. Our experiments show that SlimCAEs are highly flexible models that provide excellent rate-distortion performance, variable rate, and dynamic adjustment of memory, computational cost and latency, thus addressing the main requirements of practical image compression.

2020 Variable Rate Deep Image Compression With Modulated Autoencoder
abstract
Variable rate is a requirement for flexible and adaptable image and video compression. However, deep image compression methods (DIC) are optimized for a single fixed rate-distortion (R-D) tradeoff. While this can be addressed by training multiple models for different tradeoffs, the memory requirements increase proportionally to the number of models. Scaling the bottleneck representation of a shared autoencoder can provide variable rate compression with a single shared autoencoder. However, the R-D performance using this simple mechanism degrades in low bitrates, and also shrinks the effective range of bitrates. To address these limitations, we formulate the problem of variable R-D optimization for DIC, and propose modulated autoencoders (MAEs), where the representations of a shared autoencoder are adapted to the specific R-D tradeoff via a modulation network. Jointly training this modulated autoencoder and the modulation network provides an effective way to navigate the R-D operational curve. Our experiments show that the proposed method can achieve almost the same R-D performance of independent models with significantly fewer parameters.

2019 Sparse Data Interpolation Using the Geodesic Distance Affinity Space
abstract
In this letter, we adapt the geodesic distance-based recursive filter to the sparse data interpolation problem. The proposed technique is general and can be easily applied to any kind of sparse data. We demonstrate its superiority over other interpolation techniques in three experiments for qualitative and quantitative evaluation. In addition, we compare our method with the popular interpolation algorithm presented in the paper on EpicFlow optical flow, which is intuitively motivated by a similar geodesic distance principle. The comparison shows that our algorithm is more accurate and considerably faster than the EpicFlow interpolation technique.

2019 One-View Occlusion Detection for Stereo Matching With a Fully Connected CRF Model
abstract
In this paper, we extend the standard belief propagation (BP) sequential technique proposed in the tree-reweighted sequential method [15] to the fully connected CRF models with the geodesic distance affinity. The proposed method has been applied to the stereo matching problem. Also a new approach to the BP marginal solution is proposed that we call one-view occlusion detection (OVOD). In contrast to the standard winner takes all (WTA) estimation, the proposed OVOD solution allows to find occluded regions in the disparity map and simultaneously improve the matching result. As a result we can perform only one energy minimization process and avoid the cost calculation for the second view and the left-right check procedure. We show that the OVOD approach considerably improves results for cost augmentation and energy minimization techniques in comparison with the standard one-view affinity space implementation. We apply our method to the Middlebury data set and reach state-of-the-art especially for median, average and mean squared error metrics.

2017 Improved Recursive Geodesic Distance Computation for Edge Preserving Filter
abstract
All known recursive filters based on the geodesic distance affinity are realized by two 1D recursions applied in two orthogonal directions of the image plane. The 2D extension of the filter is not valid and has theoretically drawbacks, which lead to known artifacts. In this paper, a maximum influence propagation method is proposed to approximate the 2D extension for the geodesic distance-based recursive filter. The method allows to partially overcome the drawbacks of the 1D recursion approach. We show that our improved recursion better approximates the true geodesic distance filter, and the application of this improved filter for image denoising outperforms the existing recursive implementation of the geodesic distance. As an application, we consider a geodesic distance-based filter for image denoising. Experimental evaluation of our denoising method demonstrates comparable and for several test images better results, than state-of-the-art approaches, while our algorithm is considerably faster with computational complexity O(8P).

2015 Accurate Stereo Matching by Two-Step Energy Minimization
abstract
In stereo matching, cost-filtering methods and energy-minimization algorithms are considered as two different techniques. Due to their global extent, energy-minimization methods obtain good stereo matching results. However, they tend to fail in occluded regions, in which cost-filtering approaches obtain better results. In this paper, we intend to combine both the approaches with the aim to improve overall stereo matching results. We show that a global optimization with a fully connected model can be solved by cost-filtering methods. Based on this observation, we propose to perform stereo matching as a two-step energy-minimization algorithm. We consider two Markov random field (MRF) models: 1) a fully connected model defined on the complete set of pixels in an image and 2) a conventional locally connected model. We solve the energy-minimization problem for the fully connected model, after which the marginal function of the solution is used as the unary potential in the locally connected MRF model. Experiments on the Middlebury stereo data sets show that the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-arts results.

2015 Global Color Sparseness and a Local Statistics Prior for Fast Bilateral Filtering
abstract
The property of smoothing while preserving edges makes the bilateral filter a very popular image processing tool. However, its non-linear nature results in a computationally costly operation. Various works propose fast approximations to the bilateral filter. However, the majority does not generalize to vector input as is the case with color images. We propose a fast approximation to the bilateral filter for color images. The filter is based on two ideas. First, the number of colors, which occur in a single natural image, is limited. We exploit this color sparseness to rewrite the initial non-linear bilateral filter as a number of linear filter operations. Second, we impose a statistical prior to the image values that are locally present within the filter window. We show that this statistical prior leads to a closed-form solution of the bilateral filter. Finally, we combine both ideas into a single fast and accurate bilateral filter for color images. Experimental results show that our bilateral filter based on the local prior yields an extremely fast bilateral filter approximation, but with limited accuracy, which has potential application in real-time video filtering. Our bilateral filter, which combines color sparseness and local statistics, yields a fast and accurate bilateral filter approximation and obtains the state-of-the-art results.

2013 Constrained Optical Flow Estimation as a Matching Problem
abstract
In general, discretization in the motion vector domain yields an intractable number of labels. In this paper, we propose an approach that can reduce general optical flow to the constrained matching problem by pre-estimating a 2-D disparity labeling map of the desired discrete motion vector function. One of the goals of the proposed paper is estimating coarse distribution of motion vectors and then utilizing this distribution as global constraints for discrete optical flow estimation. This pre-estimation is done with a simple frame-to-frame correlation technique also known as the digital symmetric-phase-only-filter (SPOF). We discover a strong correlation between the output of the SPOF and the motion vector distribution of the related optical flow. A two step matching paradigm for optical flow estimation is applied: pixel accuracy (integer flow) and subpixel accuracy estimation. The matching problem is solved by global optimization. Experiments on the Middlebury optical flow datasets confirm our intuitive assumptions about strong correlation between motion vector distribution of optical flow and maximal peaks of SPOF outputs. The overall performance of the proposed method is promising and achieves state-of-the-art results on the Middlebury benchmark.

2011 Accurate Moving Cast Shadow Suppression Based on Local Color Constancy Detection
abstract
This paper describes a novel framework for detection and suppression of properly shadowed regions for most possible scenarios occurring in real video sequences. Our approach requires no prior knowledge about the scene, nor is it restricted to specific scene structures. Furthermore, the technique can detect both achromatic and chromatic shadows even in the presence of camouflage that occurs when foreground regions are very similar in color to shadowed regions. The method exploits local color constancy properties due to reflectance suppression over shadowed regions. To detect shadowed regions in a scene, the values of the background image are divided by values of the current frame in the RGB color space. We show how this luminance ratio can be used to identify segments with low gradient constancy, which in turn distinguish shadows from foreground. Experimental results on a collection of publicly available datasets illustrate the superior performance of our method compared with the most sophisticated, state-of-the-art shadow detection algorithms. These results show that our approach is robust and accurate over a broad range of shadow types and challenging video conditions.

2009 Trinocular stereo matching with composite disparity space image
abstract
In this paper we propose a method that smartly improves occlusion handling in stereo matching using trinocular stereo. The main idea is based on the assumption that any occluded region in a matched stereo pair (middle-left images) in general is not occluded in the opposite matched pair (middle-right images). Then two disparity space images (DSI) are merged in one composite DSI. The proposed integration differs from the known approach that uses a cumulative cost. The experimental results are evaluated on the Middlebury data set, showing high performance of the proposed algorithm especially in the occluded regions. Our method solves the problem on the base of a real matching cost, in such a way a global optimization problem is solved just once, and the resultant solution does not have to be corrected in the occluded regions. In contrast, the traditional methods that use two images approach have to complicate a lot their algorithms by additional add hog or heuristic techniques to reach competitive results in occluded regions.

2008 Background subtraction technique based on chromaticity and intensity patterns
abstract
This paper presents an efficient real-time method for detecting moving objects in unconstrained environments, using a background subtraction technique. A new background model that combines spatial and temporal information based on similarity measure in angles and intensity between two color vectors is introduced. The comparison is done in RGB color space. A new feature based on chromaticity and intensity pattern is extracted in order to improve the accuracy in the ambiguity region where there is a strong similarity between background and foreground and to cope with cast shadows. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated in the experimental results and comparison with others approaches is also shown.

A new motion estimation algorithm on the basis of a dynamic programming optimization operator (DPOO) is proposed. Motion estimation computation is formulated as a matching optimization problem of multiple dynamic images. A new operator that is a modification of dynamic programming recursion has been designed. This operator allows multiple implementations, and extends 1D optimization of the dynamic programming method to N-D optimization.
