2023 MATTE: Multi-task multi-scale attention
abstract
In this work, we propose a general method for learning task and scale based attention representations in Multi-Task Learning (MTL) for vision. It relies on learning and maintaining cross-task and cross-scale representations of visual information, whose interaction contributes to a symmetrical improvement across the entire task pool. Apart from learning data representations, we additionally optimize for the most beneficial interaction between tasks and their representations at different scales. Our method adds an attention modulated feature as residual information to the processing of each scale stage within the model, including the final layer of task outputs. We empirically show the effectiveness of our method through experiments with current multi-modal and multi-scale architectures on diverse MTL datasets. We evaluate MATTE on high and low level vision MTL problems, against MTL and single task learning (STL) counterparts. For all experiments we report solid performance improvements in both qualitative and quantitative performance.

2020 TindART: A Personal Visual Arts Recommender
abstract
We present TindART - a comprehensive visual arts recommender system. TindART leverages real time user input to build a user-centric preference model based on content and demographic features. Our system is coupled with visual analytics controls that allow users to gain a deeper understanding of their art taste and further refine their personal recommendation model. The content based features in TindART are extracted using a multi-task learning deep neural network which accounts for a link between multiple descriptive attributes and the content they represent. Our demographic engine is powered by social media integrations such as Google, Facebook and Twitter profiles the users can login with. Both the content and demographics power a recommender system which decision making processed is visualized through our web t-SNE implementation. TindART is live and available at: https://tindart.net/.

2019 Many Task Learning With Task Routing
abstract
Typical multi-task learning (MTL) methods rely on architectural adjustments and a large trainable parameter set to jointly optimize over several tasks. However, when the number of tasks increases so do the complexity of the architectural adjustments and resource requirements. In this paper, we introduce a method which applies a conditional feature-wise transformation over the convolutional activations that enables a model to successfully perform a large number of tasks. To distinguish from regular MTL, we introduce Many Task Learning (MaTL) as a special case of MTL where more than 20 tasks are performed by a single model. Our method dubbed Task Routing (TR) is encapsulated in a layer we call the Task Routing Layer (TRL), which applied in an MaTL scenario successfully fits hundreds of classification tasks in one model. We evaluate on 5 datasets and the Visual Decathlon (VD) challenge against strong baselines and state-of-the-art approaches.

2019 Learning Task Relatedness in Multi-Task Learning for Images in Context
abstract
Multimedia applications often require concurrent solutions to multiple tasks. These tasks hold clues to each-others solutions, however as these relations can be complex this remains a rarely utilized property. When task relations are explicitly defined based on domain knowledge multi-task learning (MTL) offers such concurrent solutions, while exploiting relatedness between multiple tasks performed over the same dataset. In most cases however, this relatedness is not explicitly defined and the domain expert knowledge that defines it is not available. To address this issue, we introduce Selective Sharing, a method that learns the inter-task relatedness from secondary latent features while the model trains. Using this insight, we can automatically group tasks and allow them to share knowledge in a mutually beneficial way. We support our method with experiments on 5 datasets in classification, regression, and ranking tasks and compare to strong baselines and state-of-the-art approaches showing a consistent improvement in terms of accuracy and parameter counts. In addition, we perform an activation region analysis showing how Selective Sharing affects the learned representation.

2019 ACE: Art, Color and Emotion
abstract
We present ACE, the Art, Color and Emotion browser. ACE is a data driven web based platform for exploring the visual sentiment and emotion in artistic paintings over time. To that end, we train our own visual artistic sentiment extraction model by leveraging the artworks from the OmniArt dataset. With our model we are able to estimate the overall sentiment dominating in groups of artworks belonging to a specific time interval. To make the results interactive and explorable we designed an intuitive interface with a carefully considered shape, color and element placement enforcing a top-down interaction scheme. Moreover, we perform extensive control on resource utilisation to provide the smoothest possible user experience and quality of service while using ACE.

2018 ArtSight: An Artistic Data Exploration Engine
abstract
This technical demo presents ArtSight, a comprehensive query-by-color explorative interface built on top of the large scale artistic dataset OmniArt. Color is of paramount importance in the artistic realm and querying such large data collections by colors that appear in their palette allows for intuitive exploration. This demo allows users to browse the 3 million artwork items in the OmniArt collection by color, and hierarchically filter each result-set by multiple attributes existing in the collection itself. Colors are extracted from the digital photographic reproductions in an unsupervised fashion in palettes of twelve and matched with their meta-data seamlessly to exploit both modalities in our filtering module. The user interaction quality is moderated by a responsive framework with touch capability and an unfoldable interactive 3D sphere visualization offering two exploration options - CompactExplore or GridExplore.

2018 OmniArt: A Large-scale Artistic Benchmark
abstract
Baselines are the starting point of any quantitative multimedia research, and benchmarks are essential for pushing those baselines further. In this article, we present baselines for the artistic domain with a new benchmark dataset featuring over 2 million images with rich structured metadata dubbed OmniArt. OmniArt contains annotations for dozens of attribute types and features semantic context information through concepts, IconClass labels, color information, and (limited) object-level bounding boxes. For our dataset we establish and present baseline scores on multiple tasks such as artist attribution, creation period estimation, type, style, and school prediction. In addition to our metadata related experiments, we explore the color spaces of art through different types and evaluate a transfer learning object recognition pipeline.
