| 2024 | Nurgle: Exacerbating Resource Consumption in Blockchain State Storage via MPT ManipulationabstractBlockchains, with intricate architectures, encompass various components, e.g., consensus network, smart contracts, decentralized applications, and auxiliary services. While offering numerous advantages, these components expose various attack surfaces, leading to severe threats to blockchains. In this study, we unveil a novel attack surface, i.e., the state storage, in blockchains. The state storage, based on the Merkle Patricia Trie, plays a crucial role in maintaining blockchain state. Besides, we design Nurgle, the first Denial-of-Service attack targeting the state storage. By proliferating intermediate nodes within the state storage, Nurgle forces blockchains to expend additional resources on state maintenance and verification, impairing their performance. We conduct a comprehensive and systematic evaluation of Nurgle, including the factors affecting it, its impact on blockchains, its financial cost, and practically demonstrating the resulting damage to blockchains. The implications of Nurgle extend beyond the performance degradation of blockchains, potentially reducing trust in them and the value of their cryptocurrencies. Additionally, we further discuss three feasible mitigations against Nurgle. At the time of writing, the vulnerability exploited by Nurgle has been confirmed by six mainstream blockchains, and we received thousands of USD bounty from them. | 2024 | CiTST-AdderNets: Computing in Toggle Spin Torques MRAM for Energy-Efficient AdderNetsabstractRecently, Adder Neural Networks (AdderNets) have gained widespread attention as an alternative to traditional Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for deep learning tasks. AdderNets use lightweight addition operations to replace multiplication and accumulation (MAC) operations, but can keep almost the same accuracy compared to other CNNs. Nevertheless, challenges still exist with regards to hardware resources, power consumption, and communication bandwidth, primarily due to the ‘Von-Neumann bottlenecks’. However, computing-in-memory (CIM) architecture based on magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) has great potential for edge DNN implementation. In this paper, we propose a novel CIM paradigm using a novel Toggle-Spin-Torques (TST) driven MRAM for energy-efficient AdderNets (called CiTST_AdderNets). In CiTST_AdderNets, MRAM is driven by the interplay of the field-free spin orbit torque (SOT) effect and the spin transfer torque (STT) effect, which offers a fascinating prospect for energy efficiency and speed. Furthermore, a novel CIM paradigm is proposed to implement the dominating subtraction and sum operations in AdderNets, reducing data transfer and the related energy. Meanwhile, a highly parallel array structure integrating computation and storage is designed to support CiTST_AdderNets. In addition, a mapping strategy is proposed to efficiently map the convolution layer on the array. Fully connected layers can also be efficiently computed. The CiTST-AdderNets macro is designed by using a 65-nm CMOS process. Results show that our CiTST-AdderNets consumes about 1.65 mJ, 9.29 mJ, and 42.46 mJ for running VGG8, ResNet-50, and ResNet-18 respectively at 8-bit fixed-point precision. Compared to state-of-the-art platforms, our macro achieves an energy efficiency improvement of 1.45 x to 66.78 x. | 2022 | TokenCat: Detect Flaw of Authentication on ERC20 TokensabstractThe development of blockchain has promoted the prosperity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The majority of cryptocurrencies are ERC20 tokens implemented based on Ethereum contracts. The major role of ERC20 tokens is to carry out various trades and loans in decentralized applications (DApps). To participate in DApps, users must grant the DApps permission to spend tokens on user behalf. However, if the authorization logic of token contract is flawed implementation, the holder of token will suffer tremendous financial losses. In this work, we detect the authentication implementation of the flaws in ERC20 token, which has not been done before. We find the authentication process of the token is implemented by operating the authentication data structure of the token. Therefore, we capture the operations of the authentication data structure in token contract to infer authentication behaviors and detect authentication defects. However, it’s not a simple task as most smart contracts are not open source and the bytecode of token contract lacks type information. To tackle these problems, we utilize symbolic execution on the token bytecode, then identify the authentication data structure and capture the operations by parsing the symbolic expressions, and finally detect authentication defects through the inferred authentication behavior. To best our knowledge, this is the first work to detect the flaws in the implementation of authentication in ERC20 Token. To automate the analysis, we implement our approach in a new tool named TokenCat and use it to inspect 245,822 tokens. As a result, the TokenCat found 491 ERC20 token authentication implementation flaws with 94% precision. Zheyuan He, Zhou Liao, Feng Luo 0009, Dijun Liu, Ting Chen 0002, Zihao Li 0001 |

| 2020 | A Novel High Performance and Energy Efficient NUCA Architecture for STT-MRAM LLCs With Thermal ConsiderationabstractAs the speed gap of the modern processor and the off-chip main memory enlarges, on-chip cache capacity increases to sustain the performance scaling. As a result, the cache power occupies a large portion of the total power budget. Spin transfer torque magnetic memory (STT-MRAM) is proposed as a promising solution for the low power cache design due to its high integration density and ultralow leakage power. Nevertheless, the high write power and latency of STT-MRAM become new barriers for the commercialization of this emerging technology. In this paper, we investigate the thermal effect on the access performance of STT-MRAM, and observe that the temperature can affect the write delay and energy significantly. Then, we explore the nonuniform cache access (NUCA) design of the chip-multiprocessors with STT-MRAM-based last level cache (LLC). A thermal aware data migration policy, called “Thermosiphon,” which takes advantage of the thermal property of STT-MRAM, is proposed to reduce the LLC write energy. This policy splits the LLC into different regions dynamically based on the thermal distribution monitored by thermal sensors available on-chip, and adaptively migrates write intensive data among different thermal regions considering the thermal gradient. Compared to the conventional NUCA design, our proposed design can save 41.2% write energy at most and 13.01% on average with negligible hardware overhead. | 2019 | An Adaptive Thermal-Aware ECC Scheme for Reliable STT-MRAM LLC DesignabstractConsidering the insatiable demand for high-performance computing, on-chip cache capacity increases rapidly. Spin-transfer-torque magnetoresistive random-access memory (STT-MRAM) is a promising cache candidate due to ultralow standby power, high-access speed, and integration density. Unfortunately, when the feature size of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) scales down to 1 Xnm, read current approaches write current closely, which may result in read disturbance threatening the reliability of STT-MRAM. Furthermore, the elevating on-chip temperature reduces the thermal stability of STT-MRAM remarkably and aggravates the read disturbance. Error correction code (ECC) is an effective technique to enhance memory reliability. In this paper, we take advantage of the thermal dependence of STT-MRAM and propose a thermally adaptive ECC design, called “Chameleon,” that can adjust the ECC protection strength dynamically to reduce the ECC storage overhead and improve the cache access performance and energy efficiency. Experimental results show that compared to the conservative nonadaptive ECC scheme, our design can improve both cache performance and energy consumption effectively. | 2018 | A Privacy-User-Friendly Scheme for Wearable Smart Sensing Devices Based on BlockchainabstractWearable smart sensing devices presently become more and more popular in people's daily life, which also brings serious problems related to personal data privacy. In order to provide users better experiences, wearable smart sensing devices are collecting users' personal data all the time and uploading the data to service provider to get computing services, which objectively let service provider master each user's condition and cause a lot of problems such as spam, harassing call, etc. This paper designs a blockchain based scheme to solve such problems by cutting off the association between user identifier and its sensing data from perspective of shielding service providers and adversaries. Firstly, privacy requirements and situations in smart sensing area are reviewed. Then, three key technologies are introduced in the scheme including its theories, purposes and usage. Next, the designed protocol is shown and analyzed in detail. Finally, security analysis and engineering feasibility of the scheme are given. This scheme will give user better experience from privacy protection perspective in smart sensing area. Guishan Dong, Jia Fan, Dijun Liu, Yao Hao |
