| 2026 | X-SAM: From Segment Anything to Any SegmentationabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate strong capabilities in broad knowledge representation, yet they are inherently deficient in pixel-level perceptual understanding. Although the Segment Anything Model (SAM) represents a significant advancement in visual-prompt-driven image segmentation, it exhibits notable limitations in multi-mask prediction and category-specific segmentation tasks, and it cannot integrate all segmentation tasks within a unified model architecture. To address these limitations, we present X-SAM, a streamlined Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) framework that extends the segmentation paradigm from segment anything to any segmentation. Specifically, we introduce a novel unified framework that enables more advanced pixel-level perceptual comprehension for MLLMs. Furthermore, we propose a new segmentation task, termed Visual GrounDed (VGD) segmentation, which segments all instance objects with interactive visual prompts and empowers MLLMs with visual grounded, pixel-wise interpretative capabilities. To enable effective training on diverse data sources, we present a unified training strategy that supports co-training across multiple datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that X-SAM achieves state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of image segmentation benchmarks, highlighting its efficiency for multimodal, pixel-level visual understanding. | 2025 | CLIP-GS: Unifying Vision-Language Representation with 3D Gaussian SplattingabstractRecent works in 3D multimodal learning have made remarkable progress. However, typically 3D multimodal models are only capable of handling point clouds. Compared to the emerging 3D representation technique, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS), the spatially sparse point cloud cannot depict the texture information of 3D objects, resulting in inferior reconstruction capabilities. This limitation constrains the potential of point cloud-based 3D multimodal representation learning. In this paper, we present CLIP-GS, a novel multimodal representation learning framework grounded in 3DGS. We introduce the GS Tokenizer to generate serialized gaussian tokens, which are then processed through transformer layers pre-initialized with weights from point cloud models, resulting in the 3DGS embeddings. CLIP-GS leverages contrastive loss between 3DGS and the visual-text embeddings of CLIP, and we introduce an image voting loss to guide the directionality and convergence of gradient optimization. Furthermore, we develop an efficient way to generate triplets of 3DGS, images, and text, facilitating CLIP-GS in learning unified multimodal representations. Leveraging the well-aligned multimodal representations, CLIP-GS demonstrates versatility and outperforms point cloud-based models on various 3D tasks, including multimodal retrieval, zero-shot, and few-shot classification. | 2025 | FlexVAR: Flexible Visual Autoregressive Modeling without Residual PredictionabstractThis work challenges the residual prediction paradigm in visual autoregressive modeling and presents FlexVAR, a new Flexible Visual AutoRegressive image generation paradigm. FlexVAR facilitates autoregressive learning with ground-truth prediction, enabling each step to independently produce plausible images. This simple, intuitive approach swiftly learns visual distributions and makes the generation process more flexible and adaptable. Trained solely on low-resolution images (< 256px), FlexVAR can: (1) Generate images of various resolutions and aspect ratios, even exceeding the resolution of the training images. (2) Support various image-to-image tasks, including image refinement, in/out-painting, and image expansion. (3) Adapt to various autoregressive steps, allowing for faster inference with fewer steps or enhancing image quality with more steps. Our 1.0B model outperforms its VAR counterpart on the ImageNet 256 × 256 benchmark. Moreover, when zero-shot transfer the image generation process with 13 steps, the performance further improves to 2.08 FID, outperforming state-of-the-art autoregressive models AiM/VAR by 0.25/0.28 FID and popular diffusion models LDM/DiT by 1.52/0.19 FID, respectively. When transferring our 1.0B model to the ImageNet 512 × 512 benchmark in a zero-shot manner, FlexVAR achieves competitive results compared to the VAR 2.3B model, which is a fully supervised model trained at 512 × 512 resolution. | 2025 | A Pyramid Fusion MLP for Dense PredictionabstractRecently, MLP-based architectures have achieved competitive performance with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs) across various vision tasks. However, most MLP-based methods introduce local feature interactions to facilitate direct adaptation to downstream tasks, thereby lacking the ability to capture global visual dependencies and multi-scale context, ultimately resulting in unsatisfactory performance on dense prediction. This paper proposes a competitive and effective MLP-based architecture called Pyramid Fusion MLP (PFMLP) to address the above limitation. Specifically, each block in PFMLP introduces multi-scale pooling and fully connected layers to generate feature pyramids, which are subsequently fused using up-sample layers and an additional fully connected layer. Employing different down-sample rates allows us to obtain diverse receptive fields, enabling the model to simultaneously capture long-range dependencies and fine-grained cues, thereby exploiting the potential of global context information and enhancing the spatial representation power of the model. Our PFMLP is the first lightweight MLP to obtain comparable results with state-of-the-art CNNs and ViTs on the ImageNet-1K benchmark. With larger FLOPs, it exceeds state-of-the-art CNNs, ViTs, and MLPs under similar computational complexity. Furthermore, experiments in object detection, instance segmentation, and semantic segmentation demonstrate that the visual representation acquired from PFMLP can be seamlessly transferred to downstream tasks, producing competitive results. | 2025 | Weakly-Supervised 3D Visual Grounding Based on Visual Language AlignmentabstractLearning to ground natural language queries to target objects or regions in 3D point clouds is quite essential for 3D scene understanding. Nevertheless, existing 3D visual grounding approaches require a substantial number of bounding box annotations for text queries, which is time-consuming and labor-intensive to obtain. In this paper, we propose3D-VLA, a weakly supervised approach for3Dvisual grounding based onVisualLanguageAlignment. Our 3D-VLA exploits the superior ability of current large-scale vision-language models (VLMs) on aligning the semantics between texts and 2D images, as well as the naturally existing correspondences between 2D images and 3D point clouds, and thus implicitly constructs correspondences between texts and 3D point clouds with no need for fine-grained box annotations in the training procedure. During the inference stage, the learned text-3D correspondence will help us ground the text queries to the 3D target objects even without 2D images. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to investigate 3D visual grounding in a weakly supervised manner by involving large scale vision-language models, and extensive experiments on ReferIt3D and ScanRefer datasets demonstrate that our 3D-VLA achieves comparable and even superior results over the fully supervised methods. | 2024 | Instance-Aware Multi-Camera 3D Object Detection with Structural Priors Mining and Self-Boosting LearningabstractCamera-based bird-eye-view (BEV) perception paradigm has made significant progress in the autonomous driving field. Under such a paradigm, accurate BEV representation construction relies on reliable depth estimation for multi-camera images. However, existing approaches exhaustively predict depths for every pixel without prioritizing objects, which are precisely the entities requiring detection in the 3D space. To this end, we propose IA-BEV, which integrates image-plane instance awareness into the depth estimation process within a BEV-based detector. First, a category-specific structural priors mining approach is proposed for enhancing the efficacy of monocular depth generation. Besides, a self-boosting learning strategy is further proposed to encourage the model to place more emphasis on challenging objects in computation-expensive temporal stereo matching. Together they provide advanced depth estimation results for high-quality BEV features construction, benefiting the ultimate 3D detection. The proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performances on the challenging nuScenes benchmark, and extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our designs. | 2024 | InstaGen: Enhancing Object Detection by Training on Synthetic DatasetabstractIn this paper, we present a novel paradigm to enhance the ability of object detector, e.g., expanding categories or improving detection performance, by training on syn-thetic dataset generated from diffusion models. Specifically, we integrate an instance-level grounding head into a pre-trained, generative diffusion model, to augment it with the ability of localising instances in the generated images. The grounding head is trained to align the text embedding of category names with the regional visual feature of the diffusion model, using supervision from an off-the-shelf object detector, and a novel self-training scheme on (novel) categories not covered by the detector. We conduct thorough experiments to show that, this enhanced version of diffusion model, termed as InstaGen, can serve as a data synthe-sizer, to enhance object detectors by training on its generated samples, demonstrating superior performance over existing state-of-the-art methods in open-vocabulary (+4.5 AP) and data-sparse (+ 1. 2 ~ 5.2 AP) scenarios. | 2024 | AlignSAM: Aligning Segment Anything Model to Open Context via Reinforcement LearningabstractPowered by massive curated training data, Segment Any-thing Model (SAM) has demonstrated its impressive generalization capabilities in open-world scenarios with the guidance of prompts. However, the vanilla SAM is class-agnostic and heavily relies on user-provided prompts to segment objects of interest. Adapting this method to diverse tasks is crucial for accurate target identification and to avoid suboptimal segmentation results. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, termed AlignSAM, designed for automatic prompting for aligning SAM to an open context through reinforcement learning. Anchored by an agent, AlignSAM enables the generality of the SAM model across diverse downstream tasks while keeping its parameters frozen. Specifically, AlignSAM initiates a prompting agent to iteratively refine segmentation predictions by interacting with the foundational model. It integrates a reinforcement learning policy network to provide informative prompts to the foundational models. Additionally, a semantic recal-ibration module is introduced to provide fine-grained labels of prompts, enhancing the model's proficiency in handling tasks encompassing explicit and implicit semantics. Experiments conducted on various challenging segmentation tasks among existing foundation models demonstrate the superiority of the proposed AlignSAM over state-of-the-art approaches. | 2024 | Investigating Compositional Challenges in Vision-Language Models for Visual GroundingabstractPre-trained vision-language models (VLMs) have achieved high performance on various downstream tasks, which have been widely used for visual grounding tasks in a weakly supervised manner. However, despite the per-formance gains contributed by large vision and language pre-training, we find that state-of-the-art VLMs struggle with compositional reasoning on grounding tasks. To demonstrate this, we propose Attribute, Relation, and Pri-ority grounding (ARPGrounding) benchmark to test VLMs' compositional reasoning ability on visual grounding tasks. ARPGrounding contains 11,425 samples and evaluates the compositional understanding of VLMs in three dimensions: 1) attribute, denoting comprehension of objects' properties; 2) relation, indicating an understanding of relation between objects; 3) priority, reflecting an awareness of the part of speech associated with nouns. Using the ARPGrounding benchmark, we evaluate several mainstream VLMs. We empirically find that these models perform quite well on conventional visual grounding datasets, achieving performance comparable to or surpassing state-of-the-art methods but showing strong deficiencies in compositional reasoning. Furthermore, we propose a composition-aware fine-tuning pipeline, demonstrating the potential to lever-age cost-effective image-text annotations for enhancing the compositional understanding of VLMs in grounding tasks. | 2024 | Lumen: Unleashing Versatile Vision-Centric Capabilities of Large Multimodal ModelsabstractLarge Multimodal Model (LMM) is a hot research topic in the computer vision area and has also demonstrated remarkable potential across multiple disciplinary fields. A recent trend is to further extend and enhance the perception capabilities of LMMs. The current methods follow the paradigm of adapting the visual task outputs to the format of the language model, which is the main component of a LMM. This adaptation leads to convenient development of such LMMs with minimal modifications, however, it overlooks the intrinsic characteristics of diverse visual tasks and hinders the learning of perception capabilities. To address this issue, we propose a novel LMM architecture named Lumen, a Large multimodal model with versatile vision-centric capability enhancement. We decouple the LMM's learning of perception capabilities into task-agnostic and task-specific stages. Lumen first promotes fine-grained vision-language concept alignment, which is the fundamental capability for various visual tasks. Thus the output of the task-agnostic stage is a shared representation for all the tasks we address in this paper. Then the task-specific decoding is carried out by flexibly routing the shared representation to lightweight task decoders with negligible training efforts. Comprehensive experimental results on a series of vision-centric and VQA benchmarks indicate that our Lumen model not only achieves or surpasses the performance of existing LMM-based approaches in a range of vision-centric tasks while maintaining general visual understanding and instruction following capabilities. | 2024 | A Unified Analysis of AdaGrad With Weighted Aggregation and Momentum AccelerationabstractIntegrating adaptive learning rate and momentum techniques into stochastic gradient descent (SGD) leads to a large class of efficiently accelerated adaptive stochastic algorithms, such as AdaGrad, RMSProp, Adam, AccAdaGrad, and so on. In spite of their effectiveness in practice, there is still a large gap in their theories of convergences, especially in the difficult nonconvex stochastic setting. To fill this gap, we propose weighted AdaGrad with unified momentum and dubbed AdaUSM, which has the main characteristics that: 1) it incorporates a unified momentum scheme that covers both the heavy ball (HB) momentum and the Nesterov accelerated gradient (NAG) momentum and 2) it adopts a novel weighted adaptive learning rate that can unify the learning rates of AdaGrad, AccAdaGrad, Adam, and RMSProp. Moreover, when we take polynomially growing weights in AdaUSM, we obtain its O(log(T)/√T) convergence rate in the nonconvex stochastic setting. We also show that the adaptive learning rates of Adam and RMSProp correspond to taking exponentially growing weights in AdaUSM, thereby providing a new perspective for understanding Adam and RMSProp. Finally, comparative experiments of AdaUSM against SGD with momentum, AdaGrad, AdaEMA, Adam, and AMSGrad on various deep learning models and datasets are also carried out. | 2024 | Learnable Central Similarity Quantization for Efficient Image and Video RetrievalabstractData-dependent hashing methods aim to learn hash functions from the pairwise or triplet relationships among the data, which often lead to low efficiency and low collision rate by only capturing the local distribution of the data. To solve the limitation, we propose central similarity, in which the hash codes of similar data pairs are encouraged to approach a common center and those of dissimilar pairs to converge to different centers. As a new global similarity metric, central similarity can improve the efficiency and retrieval accuracy of hash learning. By introducing a new concept, hash centers, we principally formulate the computation of the proposed central similarity metric, in which the hash centers refer to a set of points scattered in the Hamming space with a sufficient mutual distance between each other. To construct well-separated hash centers, we provide two efficient methods: 1) leveraging the Hadamard matrix and Bernoulli distributions to generate data-independent hash centers and 2) learning data-dependent hash centers from data representations. Based on the proposed similarity metric and hash centers, we propose central similarity quantization (CSQ) that optimizes the central similarity between data points with respect to their hash centers instead of optimizing the local similarity to generate a high-quality deep hash function. We also further improve the CSQ with data-dependent hash centers, dubbed as CSQ with learnable center (CSQLC). The proposed CSQ and CSQLC are generic and applicable to image and video hashing scenarios. We conduct extensive experiments on large-scale image and video retrieval tasks, and the proposed CSQ yields noticeably boosted retrieval performance, i.e., 3%-20% in mean average precision (mAP) over the previous state-of-the-art methods, which also demonstrates that our methods can generate cohesive hash codes for similar data pairs and dispersed hash codes for dissimilar pairs. | 2023 | Curriculum Multi-Negative Augmentation for Debiased Video GroundingabstractVideo Grounding (VG) aims to locate the desired segment from a video given a sentence query. Recent studies have found that current VG models are prone to over-rely the groundtruth moment annotation distribution biases in the training set. To discourage the standard VG model's behavior of exploiting such temporal annotation biases and improve the model generalization ability, we propose multiple negative augmentations in a hierarchical way, including cross-video augmentations from clip-/video-level, and self-shuffled augmentations with masks. These augmentations can effectively diversify the data distribution so that the model can make more reasonable predictions instead of merely fitting the temporal biases. However, directly adopting such data augmentation strategy may inevitably carry some noise shown in our cases, since not all of the handcrafted augmentations are semantically irrelevant to the groundtruth video. To further denoise and improve the grounding accuracy, we design a multi-stage curriculum strategy to adaptively train the standard VG model from easy to hard negative augmentations. Experiments on newly collected Charades-CD and ActivityNet-CD datasets demonstrate our proposed strategy can improve the performance of the base model on both i.i.d and o.o.d scenarios. | 2023 | AeDet: Azimuth-Invariant Multi-View 3D Object DetectionabstractRecent LSS-based multi-view 3D object detection has made tremendous progress, by processing the features in Brid-Eye-View (BEV) via the convolutional detector. However, the typical convolution ignores the radial symmetry of the BEV features and increases the difficulty of the detector optimization. To preserve the inherent property of the BEV features and ease the optimization, we propose an azimuth-equivariant convolution (AeConv) and an azimuth-equivariant anchor. The sampling grid of AeConv is always in the radial direction, thus it can learn azimuth-invariant BEV features. The proposed anchor enables the detection head to learn predicting azimuth-irrelevant targets. In addition, we introduce a camera-decoupled virtual depth to unify the depth prediction for the images with different camera intrinsic parameters. The resultant detector is dubbed Azimith-equivariant Detector (AeDet). Extensive experiments are conducted on nuScenes, and AeDet achieves a 62.0% NDS, surpassing the recent multi-view 3D object detectors such as PETRv2 and BEVDepth by a large margin. | 2023 | MSMDFusion: Fusing LiDAR and Camera at Multiple Scales with Multi-Depth Seeds for 3D Object DetectionabstractFusing LiDAR and camera information is essential for accurate and reliable 3D object detection in autonomous driving systems. This is challenging due to the difficulty of combining multi-granularity geometric and semantic features from two drastically different modalities. Recent approaches aim at exploring the semantic densities of camera features through lifting points in 2D camera images (referred to as “seeds”) into 3D space, and then incorporate 2D semantics via cross-modal interaction or fusion techniques. However, depth information is under-investigated in these approaches when lifting points into 3D space, thus 2D semantics can not be reliably fused with 3D points. Moreover, their multi-modal fusion strategy, which is implemented as concatenation or attention, either can not effectively fuse 2D and 3D information or is unable to perform fine-grained interactions in the voxel space. To this end, we propose a novel framework with better utilization of the depth information and fine-grained cross-modal interaction between LiDAR and camera, which consists of two important components. First, a Multi-Depth Unprojection (MDU) method is used to enhance the depth quality of the lifted points at each interaction level. Second, a Gated Modality-Aware Convolution (GMA-Conv) block is applied to modulate voxels involved with the camera modality in a fine-grained manner and then aggregate multi-modal features into a unified space. Together they provide the detection head with more comprehensive features from LiDAR and camera. On the nuScenes test benchmark, our proposed method, abbreviated as MSMD-Fusion, achieves state-of-the-art results on both 3D object detection and tracking tasks without using test-time-augmentation and ensemble techniques. | 2023 | Suspected Objects Matter: Rethinking Model's Prediction for One-stage Visual GroundingabstractRecently, one-stage visual grounders attract high attention due to their comparable accuracy but significantly higher efficiency than two-stage grounders. However, inter-object relation modeling has not been well studied for one-stage grounders. Inter-object relationship modeling, though important, is not necessarily performed among all objects, as only part of them are related to the text query and may confuse the model. We call these objects "suspected objects". However, exploring their relationships in the one-stage paradigm is non-trivial because: (1) no object proposals are available as the basis on which to select suspected objects and perform relationship modeling; (2) suspected objects are more confusing than others, as they may share similar semantics, be entangled with certain relationships, etc, and thereby more easily mislead the model's prediction. Toward this end, we propose a Suspected Object Transformation mechanism (SOT), which can be seamlessly integrated into existing CNN and Transformer-based one-stage visual grounders to encourage the target object selection among the suspected ones. Suspected objects are dynamically discovered from a learned activation map adapted to the model's current discrimination ability during training. Afterward, on top of suspected objects, a Keyword-Aware Discrimination module (KAD) and an Exploration by Random Connection strategy (ERC) are concurrently proposed to help the model rethink its initial prediction. On the one hand, KAD leverages keywords contributing high to suspected object discrimination. On the other hand, ERC allows the model to seek the correct object instead of being trapped in a situation that always exploits the current false prediction. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Zequn Jie, Jingjing Chen 0001, Lin Ma 0002, Yu-Gang Jiang 0001 |

| 2023 | Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation Via Progressive Patch LearningabstractMost of the existing semantic segmentation approaches with image-level class labels as supervision, highly rely on the initial class activation map (CAM) generated from the standard classification network. In this paper, a novel “Progressive Patch Learning” approach is proposed to improve the local details extraction of the classification, producing the CAM better covering the whole object rather than only the most discriminative regions as in CAMs obtained in conventional classification models. “Patch Learning” destructs the feature maps into patches and independently processes each local patch in parallel before the final aggregation. Such a mechanism enforces the network to find weak information from the scattered discriminative local parts, achieving enhanced local details sensitivity. “Progressive Patch Learning” further extends the feature destruction and patch learning to multi-level granularities in a progressive manner. Cooperating with a multi-stage optimization strategy, such a “Progressive Patch Learning” mechanism implicitly provides the model with the feature extraction ability across different locality-granularities. As an alternative to the implicit multi-granularity progressive fusion approach, we additionally propose an explicit method to simultaneously fuse features from different granularities in a single model, further enhancing the CAM quality on the full object coverage. Our proposed method achieves outstanding performance on the PASCAL VOC 2012 dataset (e.g., with 69.6$\%$mIoU on thetestset), which surpasses most existing weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods. | 2022 | ARMANI: Part-level Garment-Text Alignment for Unified Cross-Modal Fashion DesignabstractCross-modal fashion image synthesis has emerged as one of the most promising directions in the generation domain due to the vast untapped potential of incorporating multiple modalities and the wide range of fashion image applications. To facilitate accurate generation, cross-modal synthesis methods typically rely on Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) to align textual and garment information. In this work, we argue that simply aligning texture and garment information is not sufficient to capture the semantics of the visual information and therefore propose MaskCLIP. MaskCLIP decomposes the garments into semantic parts, ensuring fine-grained and semantically accurate alignment between the visual and text information. Building on MaskCLIP, we propose ARMANI, a unified cross-modal fashion designer with part-level garment-text alignment. ARMANI discretizes an image into uniform tokens based on a learned cross-modal codebook in its first stage and uses a Transformer to model the distribution of image tokens for a real image given the tokens of the control signals in its second stage. Contrary to prior approaches that also rely on two-stage paradigms, ARMANI introduces textual tokens into the codebook, making it possible for the model to utilize fine-grain semantic information to generate more realistic images. Further, by introducing a cross-modal Transformer, ARMANI is versatile and can accomplish image synthesis from various control signals, such as pure text, sketch images, and partial images. Extensive experiments conducted on our newly collected cross-modal fashion dataset demonstrate that ARMANI generates photo-realistic images in diverse synthesis tasks and outperforms existing state-of-the-art cross-modal image synthesis approaches. | 2022 | Expansion and Shrinkage of Localization for Weakly-Supervised Semantic SegmentationabstractGenerating precise class-aware pseudo ground-truths, a.k.a, class activation maps (CAMs), is essential for Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation. The original CAM method usually produces incomplete and inaccurate localization maps. To tackle with this issue, this paper proposes an Expansion and Shrinkage scheme based on the offset learning in the deformable convolution, to sequentially improve the recall and precision of the located object in the two respective stages. In the Expansion stage, an offset learning branch in a deformable convolution layer, referred to as expansion sampler'', seeks to sample increasingly less discriminative object regions, driven by an inverse supervision signal that maximizes image-level classification loss. The located more complete object region in the Expansion stage is then gradually narrowed down to the final object region during the Shrinkage stage. In the Shrinkage stage, the offset learning branch of another deformable convolution layer referred to as theshrinkage sampler'', is introduced to exclude the false positive background regions attended in the Expansion stage to improve the precision of the localization maps. We conduct various experiments on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014 to well demonstrate the superiority of our method over other state-of-the-art methods for Weakly-Supervised Semantic Segmentation. | 2021 | Two-stage Visual Cues Enhancement Network for Referring Image SegmentationabstractReferring Image Segmentation (RIS) aims at segmenting the target object from an image referred by one given natural language expression. The diverse and flexible expressions and complex visual contents in the images raise the RIS model with higher demands for investigating fine-grained matching behaviors between words in expressions and objects presented in images. However, such matching behaviors are hard to be learned and captured when the visual cues of referents (i.e. referred objects) are insufficient, as the referents of weak visual cues tend to be easily confused by cluttered background at boundary or even overwhelmed by salient objects in the image. And the insufficient visual cues issue can not be handled by the cross-modal fusion mechanisms as done in previous work.In this paper, we tackle this problem from a novel perspective of enhancing the visual information for the referents by devising a Two-stage Visual cues enhancement Network (TV-Net), where a novel Retrieval and Enrichment Scheme (RES) and an Adaptive Multi-resolution feature Fusion (AMF) module are proposed. Specifically, RES retrieves the most relevant image from an external data pool with regard to both the visual and textual similarities, and then enriches the visual information of the referent with the retrieved image for better multimodal feature learning. AMF further enhances the visual detailed information by incorporating the high-resolution feature maps from lower convolution layers of the image. Through the two-stage enhancement, our proposed TV-Net enjoys better performances in learning fine-grained matching behaviors between the natural language expression and image, especially when the visual information of the referent is inadequate, thus produces better segmentation results. Extensive experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method on the RIS task, with our proposed TV-Net surpassing the state-of-the-art approaches on four benchmark datasets. | 2021 | Delving deep into the imbalance of positive proposals in two-stage object detectionabstractImbalance issue is a major yet unsolved bottleneck for the current object detection models. In this work, we observe two crucial yet never discussed imbalance issues. The first imbalance lies in the large number of low-quality RPN proposals, which makes the R-CNN module (i.e., post-classification layers) become highly biased towards the negative proposals in the early training stage. The second imbalance stems from the unbalanced ground-truth numbers across different testing images, resulting in the imbalance of the number of potentially existing positive proposals in testing phase. To tackle these two imbalance issues, we incorporates two innovations into Faster R-CNN: 1) an R-CNN Gradient Annealing (RGA) strategy to enhance the impact of positive proposals in the early training stage. 2) a set of Parallel R-CNN Modules (PRM) with different positive/negative sampling ratios during training on one same backbone. Our RGA and PRM can totally bring 2.0% improvements on AP on COCO minival. Experiments on CrowdHuman further validates the effectiveness of our innovations across various kinds of object detection tasks. Zheng Ge, Zequn Jie, Chengzheng Li, Osamu Yoshie |

| 2021 | Anytime Recognition with Routing Convolutional NetworksabstractAchieving an automatic trade-off between accuracy and efficiency for a single deep neural network is highly desired in time-sensitive computer vision applications. To achieve anytime prediction, existing methods only embed fixed exits to neural networks and make the predictions with the fixed exits for all the samples (refer to the "latest-all" strategy). However, it is observed that the latest exit within a time budget does not always provide a more accurate prediction than the earlier exits for testing samples of various difficulties, making the "latest-all" strategy a sub-optimal solution. Motivated by this, we propose to improve the anytime prediction accuracy by allowing each sample to adaptively select its own optimal exit within a specific time budget. Specifically, we propose a new Routing Convolutional Network (RCN). For any given time budget, it adaptively selects the optimal layer as exit for a specific testing sample. To learn an optimal policy for sample routing, a Q-network is embedded into the RCN at each exit, considering both potential information gain and time-cost. To further boost the anytime prediction accuracy, the exits and the Q-networks are optimized alternately to mutually boost each other under the cost-sensitive environment. Apart from applying to whole image classification, RCN can also be adapted to dense prediction tasks, e.g., scene parsing, to achieve the pixel-level anytime prediction. Extensive experimental results on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet classification benchmarks, and Cityscapes scene parsing benchmark demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed RCN for anytime recognition. | 2021 | CASNet: A Cross-Attention Siamese Network for Video Salient Object DetectionabstractRecent works on video salient object detection have demonstrated that directly transferring the generalization ability of image-based models to video data without modeling spatial-temporal information remains nontrivial and challenging. Considering both intraframe accuracy and interframe consistency of saliency detection, this article presents a novel cross-attention based encoder-decoder model under the Siamese framework (CASNet) for video salient object detection. A baseline encoder-decoder model trained with Lovász softmax loss function is adopted as a backbone network to guarantee the accuracy of intraframe salient object detection. Self- and cross-attention modules are incorporated into our model in order to preserve the saliency correlation and improve intraframe salient detection consistency. Extensive experimental results obtained by ablation analysis and cross-data set validation demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Quantitative results indicate that our CASNet model outperforms 19 state-of-the-art image- and video-based methods on six benchmark data sets. Yuzhu Ji, Haijun Zhang 0002, Zequn Jie, Lin Ma 0002, Q. | 2020 | MTL-NAS: Task-Agnostic Neural Architecture Search Towards General-Purpose Multi-Task LearningabstractWe propose to incorporate neural architecture search (NAS) into general-purpose multi-task learning (GP-MTL). Existing NAS methods typically define different search spaces according to different tasks. In order to adapt to different task combinations (i.e., task sets), we disentangle the GP-MTL networks into single-task backbones (optionally encode the task priors), and a hierarchical and layerwise features sharing/fusing scheme across them. This enables us to design a novel and general task-agnostic search space, which inserts cross-task edges (i.e., feature fusion connections) into fixed single-task network backbones. Moreover, we also propose a novel single-shot gradient-based search algorithm that closes the performance gap between the searched architectures and the final evaluation architecture. This is realized with a minimum entropy regularization on the architecture weights during the search phase, which makes the architecture weights converge to near-discrete values and therefore achieves a single model. As a result, our searched model can be directly used for evaluation without (re-)training from scratch. We perform extensive experiments using different single-task backbones on various task sets, demonstrating the promising performance obtained by exploiting the hierarchical and layerwise features, as well as the desirable generalizability to different i) task sets and ii) single-task backbones. | 2020 | NMS by Representative Region: Towards Crowded Pedestrian Detection by Proposal PairingabstractAlthough significant progress has been made in pedestrian detection recently, pedestrian detection in crowded scenes is still challenging. The heavy occlusion between pedestrians imposes great challenges to the standard Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS). A relative low threshold of intersection over union (IoU) leads to missing highly overlapped pedestrians, while a higher one brings in plenty of false positives. To avoid such a dilemma, this paper proposes a novel Representative Region NMS (R2NMS) approach leveraging the less occluded visible parts, effectively removing the redundant boxes without bringing in many false positives. To acquire the visible parts, a novel Paired-Box Model (PBM) is proposed to simultaneously predict the full and visible boxes of a pedestrian. The full and visible boxes constitute a pair serving as the sample unit of the model, thus guaranteeing a strong correspondence between the two boxes throughout the detection pipeline. Moreover, convenient feature integration of the two boxes is allowed for the better performance on both full and visible pedestrian detection tasks. Experiments on the challenging CrowdHuman and CityPersons benchmarks sufficiently validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on pedestrian detection in the crowded situation. | 2020 | Central Similarity Quantization for Efficient Image and Video RetrievalabstractExisting data-dependent hashing methods usually learn hash functions from pairwise or triplet data relationships, which only capture the data similarity locally, and often suffer from low learning efficiency and low collision rate. In this work, we propose a new \emph{global} similarity metric, termed as \emph{central similarity}, with which the hash codes of similar data pairs are encouraged to approach a common center and those for dissimilar pairs to converge to different centers, to improve hash learning efficiency and retrieval accuracy. We principally formulate the computation of the proposed central similarity metric by introducing a new concept, i.e., \emph{hash center} that refers to a set of data points scattered in the Hamming space with a sufficient mutual distance between each other. We then provide an efficient method to construct well separated hash centers by leveraging the Hadamard matrix and Bernoulli distributions. Finally, we propose the Central Similarity Quantization (CSQ) that optimizes the central similarity between data points w.r.t.\ their hash centers instead of optimizing the local similarity. CSQ is generic and applicable to both image and video hashing scenarios. Extensive experiments on large-scale image and video retrieval tasks demonstrate that CSQ can generate cohesive hash codes for similar data pairs and dispersed hash codes for dissimilar pairs, achieving a noticeable boost in retrieval performance, i.e. 3\%-20\% in mAP over the previous state-of-the-arts. | 2020 | PS-RCNN: Detecting Secondary Human Instances in a Crowd via Primary Object SuppressionabstractDetecting human bodies in highly crowded scenes is a challenging problem. Two main reasons result in such a problem: 1). weak visual cues of heavily occluded instances can hardly provide sufficient information for accurate detection; 2). heavily occluded instances are easier to be suppressed by Non-Maximum-Suppression (NMS). To address these two issues, we introduce a variant of two-stage detectors called PS-RCNN. PS-RCNN first detects slightly/none occluded objects by an R-CNN [1] module (referred as P-RCNN), and then suppress the detected instances by human-shaped masks so that the features of heavily occluded instances can stand out. After that, PS-RCNN utilizes another R-CNN module specialized in heavily occluded human detection (referred as S-RCNN) to detect the rest missed objects by P-RCNN. Final results are the ensemble of the outputs from these two RCNNs. Moreover, we introduce a High Resolution RoI Align (HRRA) module to retain as much of fine-grained features of visible parts of the heavily occluded humans as possible. Our PS-RCNN significantly improves recall and AP by 4.49% and 2.92% respectively on CrowdHuman [2], compared to the baseline. Similar improvements on Widerperson [3] are also achieved by the PS-RCNN. | 2020 | Joint Task-Recursive Learning for RGB-D Scene UnderstandingabstractRGB-D scene understanding under monocular camera is an emerging and challenging topic with many potential applications. In this paper, we propose a novel Task-Recursive Learning (TRL) framework to jointly and recurrently conduct three representative tasks therein containing depth estimation, surface normal prediction and semantic segmentation. TRL recursively refines the prediction results through a series of task-level interactions, where one-time cross-task interaction is abstracted as one network block of one time stage. In each stage, we serialize multiple tasks into a sequence and then recursively perform their interactions. To adaptively enhance counterpart patterns, we encapsulate interactions into a specific Task-Attentional Module (TAM) to mutually-boost the tasks from each other. Across stages, the historical experiences of previous states of tasks are selectively propagated into the next stages by using Feature-Selection unit (FS-Unit), which takes advantage of complementary information across tasks. The sequence of task-level interactions is also evolved along a coarse-to-fine scale space such that the required details may be refined progressively. Finally the task-abstracted sequence problem of multi-task prediction is framed into a recursive network. Extensive experiments on NYU-Depth v2 and SUN RGB-D datasets demonstrate that our method can recursively refines the results of the triple tasks and achieves state-of-the-art performance. | 2020 | Matching Image and Sentence With Multi-Faceted RepresentationsabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel multimodal matching model for the image and sentence based on their multiple representations. Each representation of the image or sentence undergoes an independent neural network, consisting of multiple layers of nonlinear mappings to yield the corresponding embedding. Besides exploiting the image and sentence relationship based on their embeddings, we propose one novel loss to further exploit the relationship within each single modality, namely, image and sentence based on the yielded multiple embeddings, which is used to train the neural networks simultaneously. The experimental results demonstrate that multiple representations can help to capture the image contents and the sentence semantic meaning more precisely, thus making comprehensive exploitations of the complicated image and sentence matching relationship. More concretely, the proposed matching model significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in bidirectional image-sentence retrieval on the Flickr8K, Flickr30K, and Microsoft COCO datasets. | 2019 | Localizing Natural Language in VideosabstractIn this paper, we consider the task of natural language video localization (NLVL): given an untrimmed video and a natural language description, the goal is to localize a segment in the video which semantically corresponds to the given natural language description. We propose a localizing network (LNet), working in an end-to-end fashion, to tackle the NLVL task. We first match the natural sentence and video sequence by cross-gated attended recurrent networks to exploit their fine-grained interactions and generate a sentence-aware video representation. A self interactor is proposed to perform crossframe matching, which dynamically encodes and aggregates the matching evidences. Finally, a boundary model is proposed to locate the positions of video segments corresponding to the natural sentence description by predicting the starting and ending points of the segment. Extensive experiments conducted on the public TACoS and DiDeMo datasets demonstrate that our proposed model performs effectively and efficiently against the state-of-the-art approaches. | 2019 | Geometry-Aware Distillation for Indoor Semantic SegmentationabstractIt has been shown that jointly reasoning the 2D appearance and 3D information from RGB-D domains is beneficial to indoor scene semantic segmentation. However, most existing approaches require accurate depth map as input to segment the scene which severely limits their applications. In this paper, we propose to jointly infer the semantic and depth information by distilling geometry-aware embedding to eliminate such strong constraint while still exploiting the helpful depth domain information. In addition, we use this learned embedding to improve the quality of semantic segmentation, through a proposed geometry-aware propagation framework followed by several multi-level skip feature fusion blocks. By decoupling the single task prediction network into two joint tasks of semantic segmentation and geometry embedding learning, together with the proposed information propagation and feature fusion architecture, our method is shown to perform favorably against state-of-the-art methods for semantic segmentation on publicly available challenging indoor datasets. | 2019 | A Sufficient Condition for Convergences of Adam and RMSPropabstractAdam and RMSProp are two of the most influential adaptive stochastic algorithms for training deep neural networks, which have been pointed out to be divergent even in the convex setting via a few simple counterexamples. Many attempts, such as decreasing an adaptive learning rate, adopting a big batch size, incorporating a temporal decorrelation technique, seeking an analogous surrogate, etc., have been tried to promote Adam/RMSProp-type algorithms to converge. In contrast with existing approaches, we introduce an alternative easy-to-check sufficient condition, which merely depends on the parameters of the base learning rate and combinations of historical second-order moments, to guarantee the global convergence of generic Adam/RMSProp for solving large-scale non-convex stochastic optimization. Moreover, we show that the convergences of several variants of Adam, such as AdamNC, AdaEMA, etc., can be directly implied via the proposed sufficient condition in the non-convex setting. In addition, we illustrate that Adam is essentially a specifically weighted AdaGrad with exponential moving average momentum, which provides a novel perspective for understanding Adam and RMSProp. This observation coupled with this sufficient condition gives much deeper interpretations on their divergences. At last, we validate the sufficient condition by applying Adam and RMSProp to tackle a certain counterexample and train deep neural networks. Numerical results are exactly in accord with our theoretical analysis. Fangyu Zou, Li Shen 0005, Zequn Jie, Wei Liu 0005 |

| 2018 | Left-Right Comparative Recurrent Model for Stereo MatchingabstractLeveraging the disparity information from both left and right views is crucial for stereo disparity estimation. Left-right consistency check is an effective way to enhance the disparity estimation by referring to the information from the opposite view. However, the conventional left-right consistency check is an isolated post-processing step and heavily hand-crafted. This paper proposes a novel left-right comparative recurrent model to perform left-right consistency checking jointly with disparity estimation. At each recurrent step, the model produces disparity results for both views, and then performs online left-right comparison to identify the mismatched regions which may probably contain erroneously labeled pixels. A soft attention mechanism is introduced, which employs the learned error maps for better guiding the model to selectively focus on refining the unreliable regions at the next recurrent step. In this way, the generated disparity maps are progressively improved by the proposed recurrent model. Extensive evaluations on KITTI 2015, Scene Flow and Middlebury benchmarks validate the effectiveness of our model, demonstrating that state-of-the-art stereo disparity estimation results can be achieved by this new model. | 2018 | Revisiting Dilated Convolution: A Simple Approach for Weakly- and Semi-Supervised Semantic SegmentationabstractDespite the remarkable progress, weakly supervised segmentation approaches are still inferior to their fully supervised counterparts. We obverse the performance gap mainly comes from their limitation on learning to produce high-quality dense object localization maps from image-level supervision. To mitigate such a gap, we revisit the dilated convolution [1] and reveal how it can be utilized in a novel way to effectively overcome this critical limitation of weakly supervised segmentation approaches. Specifically, we find that varying dilation rates can effectively enlarge the receptive fields of convolutional kernels and more importantly transfer the surrounding discriminative information to non-discriminative object regions, promoting the emergence of these regions in the object localization maps. Then, we design a generic classification network equipped with convolutional blocks of different dilated rates. It can produce dense and reliable object localization maps and effectively benefit both weakly- and semi- supervised semantic segmentation. Despite the apparent simplicity, our proposed approach obtains superior performance over state-of-the-arts. In particular, it achieves 60.8% and 67.6% mIoU scores on Pascal VOC 2012 test set in weakly- (only image-level labels are available) and semi- (1,464 segmentation masks are available) supervised settings, which are the new state-of-the-arts. | 2018 | Multi-View Image Generation from a Single-ViewabstractHow to generate multi-view images with realistic-looking appearance from only a single view input is a challenging problem. In this paper, we attack this problem by proposing a novel image generation model termed VariGANs, which combines the merits of the variational inference and the Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). It generates the target image in a coarse-to-fine manner instead of a single pass which suffers from severe artifacts. It first performs variational inference to model global appearance of the object (e.g., shape and color) and produces coarse images of different views. Conditioned on the generated coarse images, it then performs adversarial learning to fill details consistent with the input and generate the fine images. Extensive experiments conducted on two clothing datasets, MVC and DeepFashion, have demonstrated that the generated images with the proposed VariGANs are more plausible than those generated by existing approaches, which provide more consistent global appearance as well as richer and sharper details. | 2018 | Object Proposal Generation With Fully Convolutional NetworksabstractObject proposal generation, as a preprocessing technique, has been widely used in current object detection pipelines to guide the search of objects and avoid exhaustive sliding window search across images. Current object proposals are mostly based on low-level image cues, such as edges and saliency. However, objectness is possibly a high-level semantic concept showing whether one region contains objects. This paper presents a framework utilizing fully convolutional networks (FCNs) to produce object proposal positions and bounding box location refinement with Support Vector Machine (SVM) to further improve proposal localization. Experiments on the PASCAL VOC 2007 show that using high-level semantic object proposals obtained by FCN, the object recall can be improved. An improvement in detection mean average precision is also seen when using our proposals in the Fast R-convolutional neural network framework. In addition, we also demonstrate that our method shows stronger robustness when introduced to image perturbations, e.g., blurring, JPEG compression, and salt and pepper noise. Finally, the generalization capability of our model (trained on the PASCAL VOC 2007) is evaluated and validated by testing on PASCAL VOC 2012 validation set, ILSVRC 2013 validation set, and MS COCO 2014 validation set. | 2018 | Video-Based Person Re-Identification With Accumulative Motion ContextabstractVideo-based person re-identification plays a central role in realistic security and video surveillance. In this paper, we propose a novel accumulative motion context (AMOC) network for addressing this important problem, which effectively exploits the long-range motion context for robustly identifying the same person under challenging conditions. Given a video sequence of the same or different persons, the proposed AMOC network jointly learns appearance representation and motion context from a collection of adjacent frames using a two-stream convolutional architecture. Then, AMOC accumulates clues from motion context by recurrent aggregation, allowing effective information flow among adjacent frames and capturing dynamic gist of the persons. The architecture of AMOC is end-to-end trainable, and thus, motion context can be adapted to complement appearance clues under unfavorable conditions (e.g., occlusions). Extensive experiments are conduced on three public benchmark data sets, i.e., the iLIDS-VID, PRID-2011, and MARS data sets, to investigate the performance of AMOC. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed AMOC network outperforms state-of-the-arts for video-based re-identification significantly and confirm the advantage of exploiting long-range motion context for video-based person re-identification, validating our motivation evidently. | 2017 | Multi-Path Feedback Recurrent Neural Networks for Scene ParsingabstractIn this paper, we consider the scene parsing problem and propose a novel Multi-Path Feedback recurrent neural network (MPF-RNN) for parsing scene images. MPF-RNN can enhance the capability of RNNs in modeling long-range context information at multiple levels and better distinguish pixels that are easy to confuse. Different from feedforward CNNs and RNNs with only single feedback, MPF-RNN propagates the contextual features learned at top layer through multiple weighted recurrent connections to learn bottom features. For better training MPF-RNN, we propose a new strategy that considers accumulative loss at multiple recurrent steps to improve performance of the MPF-RNN on parsing small objects. | 2017 | Video Scene Parsing with Predictive Feature LearningabstractVideo scene parsing is challenging due to the following two reasons: firstly, it is non-trivial to learn meaningful video representations for producing the temporally consistent labeling map; secondly, such a learning process becomes more difficult with insufficient labeled video training data. In this work, we propose a unified framework to address the above two problems, which is to our knowledge the first model to employ predictive feature learning in the video scene parsing. The predictive feature learning is carried out in two predictive tasks: frame prediction and predictive parsing. It is experimentally proved that the learned predictive features in our model are able to significantly enhance the video parsing performance by combining with the standard image parsing network. Interestingly, the performance gain brought by the predictive learning is almost costless as the features are learned from a large amount of unlabeled video data in an unsupervised way. | 2017 | FoveaNet: Perspective-Aware Urban Scene ParsingabstractParsing urban scene images benefits many applications, especially self-driving. Most of the current solutions employ generic image parsing models that treat all scales and locations in the images equally and do not consider the geometry property of car-captured urban scene images. Thus, they suffer from heterogeneous object scales caused by perspective projection of cameras on actual scenes and inevitably encounter parsing failures on distant objects as well as other boundary and recognition errors. In this work, we propose a new FoveaNet model to fully exploit the perspective geometry of scene images and address the common failures of generic parsing models. FoveaNet estimates the perspective geometry of a scene image through a convolutional network which integrates supportive evidence from contextual objects within the image. Based on the perspective geometry information, FoveaNet “undoes” the camera perspective projection - analyzing regions in the space of the actual scene, and thus provides much more reliable parsing results. Furthermore, to effectively address the recognition errors, FoveaNet introduces a new dense CRFs model that takes the perspective geometry as a prior potential. We evaluate FoveaNet on two urban scene parsing datasets, Cityspaces and CamVid, which demonstrates that FoveaNet can outperform all the well-established baselines and provide new state-of-the-art performance. | 2017 | Neural Person Search MachinesabstractWe investigate the problem of person search in the wild in this work. Instead of comparing the query against all candidate regions generated in a query-blind manner, we propose to recursively shrink the search area from the whole image till achieving precise localization of the target person, by fully exploiting information from the query and contextual cues in every recursive search step. We develop the Neural Person Search Machines (NPSM) to implement such recursive localization for person search. Benefiting from its neural search mechanism, NPSM is able to selectively shrink its focus from a loose region to a tighter one containing the target automatically. In this process, NPSM employs an internal primitive memory component to memorize the query representation which modulates the attention and augments its robustness to other distracting regions. | 2017 | Predicting Scene Parsing and Motion Dynamics in the FutureabstractIt is important for intelligent systems, e.g. autonomous vehicles and robotics to anticipate the future in order to plan early and make decisions accordingly. Predicting the future scene parsing and motion dynamics helps the agents better understand the visual environment better as the former provides dense semantic segmentations, i.e. what objects will be present and where they will appear, while the latter provides dense motion information, i.e. how the objects move in the future. In this paper, we propose a novel model to predict the scene parsing and motion dynamics in unobserved future video frames simultaneously. Using history information (preceding frames and corresponding scene parsing results) as input, our model is able to predict the scene parsing and motion for arbitrary time steps ahead. More importantly, our model is superior compared to other methods that predict parsing and motion separately, as the complementary relationship between the two tasks are fully utilized in our model through joint learning. To our best knowledge, this is the first attempt in jointly predicting scene parsing and motion dynamics in the future frames. On the large-scale Cityscapes dataset, it is demonstrated that our model produces significantly better parsing and motion prediction results compared to well established baselines. In addition, we also show our model can be used to predict the steering angle of the vehicles, which further verifies the ability of our model to learn underlying latent parameters. By being recursive, R2-IOS iteratively optimizes the two subnetworks during joint training, in which the refined object proposals and improved segmentation predictions are alternately fed into each other to progressively increase the network capabilities. By being reversible, the proposal refinement sub-network adaptively determines an optimal number of refinement iterations required for each proposal during both training and testing. Furthermore, to handle multiple overlapped instances within a proposal, an instance-aware denoising autoencoder is introduced into the segmentation sub-network to distinguish the dominant object from other distracting instances. Extensive experiments on the challenging PASCAL VOC 2012 benchmark well demonstrate the superiority of R2-IOS over other state-of-the-art methods. In particular, the APr over 20 classes at 0:5 IoU achieves 66:7%, which significantly outperforms the results of 58:7% by PFN [17] and 46:3% by [22]. | 2016 | Tree-Structured Reinforcement Learning for Sequential Object LocalizationabstractExisting object proposal algorithms usually search for possible object regions over multiple locations and scales \emph{ separately}, which ignore the interdependency among different objects and deviate from the human perception procedure. To incorporate global interdependency between objects into object localization, we propose an effective Tree-structured Reinforcement Learning (Tree-RL) approach to sequentially search for objects by fully exploiting both the current observation and historical search paths. The Tree-RL approach learns multiple searching policies through maximizing the long-term reward that reflects localization accuracies over all the objects. Starting with taking the entire image as a proposal, the Tree-RL approach allows the agent to sequentially discover multiple objects via a tree-structured traversing scheme. Allowing multiple near-optimal policies, Tree-RL offers more diversity in search paths and is able to find multiple objects with a single feed-forward pass. Therefore, Tree-RL can better cover different objects with various scales which is quite appealing in the context of object proposal. Experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 validate the effectiveness of the Tree-RL, which can achieve comparable recalls with current object proposal algorithms via much fewer candidate windows. | 2016 | Scale-Aware Pixelwise Object Proposal NetworksabstractObject proposal is essential for current state-of-the-art object detection pipelines. However, the existing proposal methods generally fail in producing results with satisfying localization accuracy. The case is even worse for small objects, which, however, are quite common in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel scale-aware pixelwise object proposal network (SPOP-net) to tackle the challenges. The SPOP-net can generate proposals with high recall rate and average best overlap, even for small objects. In particular, in order to improve the localization accuracy, a fully convolutional network is employed which predicts locations of object proposals for each pixel. The produced ensemble of pixelwise object proposals enhances the chance of hitting the object significantly without incurring heavy extra computational cost. To solve the challenge of localizing objects at small scale, two localization networks, which are specialized for localizing objects with different scales are introduced, following the divide-and-conquer philosophy. Location outputs of these two networks are then adaptively combined to generate the final proposals by a large-/small-size weighting network. Extensive evaluations on PASCAL VOC 2007 and COCO 2014 show the SPOP network is superior over the state-of-the-art models. The high-quality proposals from SPOP-net also significantly improve the mean average precision of object detection with Fast-Regions with CNN features framework. Finally, the SPOP-net (trained on PASCAL VOC) shows great generalization performance when testing it on ILSVRC 2013 validation set. Zequn Jie, Xiaodan Liang, Jiashi Feng, Wen Feng Lu, Francis E. H.
