2023 Optimal Parameter-Transfer Learning by Semiparametric Model Averaging
abstract
In this article, we focus on prediction of a target model by transferring the information of source models. To be flexible, we use semiparametric additive frameworks for the target and source models. Inheriting the spirit of parameter-transfer learning, we assume that different models possibly share common knowledge across parametric components that is helpful for the target predictive task. Unlike existing parameter-transfer approaches, which need to construct auxiliary source models by parameter similarity with the target model and then adopt a regularization procedure, we propose a frequentist model averaging strategy with a $J$-fold cross-validation criterion so that auxiliary parameter information from different models can be adaptively transferred through data-driven weight assignments. The asymptotic optimality and weight convergence of our proposed method are built under some regularity conditions. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over competitive methods.

2023 A Variational AutoEncoder-Based Relational Model for Cost-Effective Automatic Medical Fraud Detection
abstract
This work aims to develop a framework of automatic medical fraud detection (AMFD) which can be deployed in healthcare industry. To address the issue that the medical fraud labels are insufficient in both size and classes for training a good AMFD model, this work proposes a novel Variational AutoEncoder-based Relational Model (VAERM) which can simultaneously exploit Patient-Doctor relational network and one-class fraud labels to improve the fraud detection. Then, the proposed VAERM coupled with active learning strategy can assist healthcare industry experts to conduct cost-effective fraud investigation. Finally, we propose an online model updating method to reduce the computation and memory requirement while preserving the predictive performance. The proposed framework is tested in a real world dataset and it empirically outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both automatic fraud detection and fraud investigation tasks.

2016 Group-combined P-values with applications to genetic association studies
abstract
MOTIVATION: In large-scale genetic association studies with tens of hundreds of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) genotyped, the traditional statistical framework of logistic regression using maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) to infer the odds ratios of SNPs may not work appropriately. This is because a large number of odds ratios need to be estimated, and the MLEs may be not stable when some of the SNPs are in high linkage disequilibrium. Under this situation, the P-value combination procedures seem to provide good alternatives as they are constructed on the basis of single-marker analysis. RESULTS: The commonly used P-value combination methods (such as the Fisher's combined test, the truncated product method, the truncated tail strength and the adaptive rank truncated product) may lose power when the significance level varies across SNPs. To tackle this problem, a group combined P-value method (GCP) is proposed, where the P-values are divided into multiple groups and then are combined at the group level. With this strategy, the significance values are integrated at different levels, and the power is improved. Simulation shows that the GCP can effectively control the type I error rates and have additional power over the existing methods-the power increase can be as high as over 50% under some situations. The proposed GCP method is applied to data from the Genetic Analysis Workshop 16. Among all the methods, only the GCP and ARTP can give the significance to identify a genomic region covering gene DSC3 being associated with rheumatoid arthritis, but the GCP provides smaller P-value. 2015 Gas Recognition under Sensor Drift by Using Deep Learning
abstract
Machine olfaction is an intelligent system that combines a cross-sensitivity chemical sensor array and an effective pattern recognition algorithm for the detection, identification, or quantification of various odors. Data collected by the sensor array are the multivariate time series signals with a complex structure, and these signals become more difficult to analyze due to sensor drift. In this work, we focus on improving the classification performance under sensor drift by using the deep learning method, which is popular nowadays. Compared with other methods, our method can effectively tackle sensor drift by automatically extracting features, thus not only removing the complexity of designing the hand-made features but also making it pervasive for a variety of application in machine olfaction. Our experimental results show that the deep learning method can learn the features that are more robust to drift than the original input and achieves high classification accuracy.
