2025 Uni3C: Unifying Precisely 3D-Enhanced Camera and Human Motion Controls for Video Generation
abstract
Camera and human motion controls have been extensively studied for video generation, but existing approaches typically address them separately, suffering from limited data with high-quality annotations for both aspects. To overcome this, we present Uni3C, a unified 3D-enhanced framework for precise control of both camera and human motion in video generation. Uni3C includes two key contributions. First, we propose a plug-and-play control module trained with a frozen video generative backbone, PCDController, which utilizes unprojected point clouds from monocular depth to achieve accurate camera control. By leveraging the strong 3D priors of point clouds and the powerful capacities of video foundational models, PCDController shows impressive generalization, performing well regardless of whether the inference backbone is frozen or fine-tuned. This flexibility enables different modules of Uni3C to be trained in specific domains, i.e., either camera control or human motion control, reducing the dependency on jointly annotated data. Second, we propose a jointly aligned 3D world guidance for the inference phase that seamlessly integrates both scenic point clouds and SMPL-X characters to unify the control signals for camera and human motion, respectively. Extensive experiments confirm that PCDController enjoys strong robustness in driving camera motion for fine-tuned backbones of video generation. Uni3C substantially outperforms competitors in both camera controllability and human motion quality. Additionally, we collect tailored validation sets featuring challenging camera movements and human actions to validate the effectiveness of our method. 2024 CosmicMan: A Text-to-Image Foundation Model for Humans
abstract
We present CosmicMan, a text-to-image foundation model specialized for generating high-fidelity human images. Unlike current general-purpose foundation models that are stuck in the dilemma of inferior quality and text-image misalignment for humans, CosmicMan enables generating photo-realistic human images with meticulous appearance, reasonable structure, and precise text-image alignment with detailed dense descriptions. At the heart of CosmicMan's success are the new reflections and perspectives on data and models: (1) We found that data quality and a scalable data production flow are essential for the final results from trained models. Hence, we propose a new data production paradigm, Annotate Anyone, which serves as a perpetual data flywheel to produce high-quality data with accurate yet cost-effective annotations over time. Based on this, we constructed a large-scale dataset, CosmicMan-HQ 1.0, with 6 Million high-quality real-world human images in a mean resolution of$1488 \times 1255$, and attached with precise text annotations deriving from 115 Million attributes in diverse granularities. (2) We argue that a text-to-image foundation model specialized for humans must be pragmatic – easy to integrate into down-streaming tasks while effective in producing high-quality human images. Hence, we propose to model the relationship between dense text descriptions and image pixels in a decomposed manner, and present Decomposed-Attention-Refocusing (Daring) training framework. It seamlessly decomposes the cross-attention features in existing text-to-image diffusion model, and enforces attention refocusing without adding extra modules. Through Daring, we show that explicitly discretizing continuous text space into several basic groups that align with human body structure is the key to tackling the misalignment problem in a breeze. 2024 Fast-Vid2Vid++: Spatial-Temporal Distillation for Real-Time Video-to-Video Synthesis
abstract
Video-to-Video synthesis (Vid2Vid) gains remarkable performance in generating a photo-realistic video from a sequence of semantic maps, such as segmentation, sketch and pose. However, this pipeline is heavily limited to high computational cost and long inference latency, mainly attributed to two essential factors: 1) network architecture parameters, 2) sequential data stream. Recently, the parameters of image-based generative models have been significantly reduced via more efficient network architectures. Existing methods mainly focus on slimming network architectures but ignore the size of the sequential data stream. Moreover, due to the lack of temporal coherence, image-based compression is not sufficient for the compression of the video task. In this paper, we present a spatial-temporal hybrid distillation compression framework, Fast-Vid2Vid++, which focuses on knowledge distillation of the teacher network and the data stream of generative models on both space and time. Fast-Vid2Vid++ makes the first attempt at time dimension to transfer hierarchical features and time coherence knowledge to reduce computational resources and accelerate inference. Specifically, we compress the data stream spatially and reduce the temporal redundancy. We distill the knowledge of the hierarchical features and the final response from the teacher network to the student network in high-resolution and full-time domains. We transfer the long-term dependencies of the features and video frames to the student model. After the proposed spatial-temporal hybrid knowledge distillation (Spatial-Temporal-HKD), our model can synthesize high-resolution key-frames using the low-resolution data stream. Finally, Fast-Vid2Vid++ interpolates intermediate frames by motion compensation with slight latency and generates full-length sequences with motion-aware inference (MAI). On standard benchmarks, Fast-Vid2Vid++ achieves a real-time performance of 30-59 FPS and saves 28-35× computational cost on a single V100 GPU.

2023 UnitedHuman: Harnessing Multi-Source Data for High-Resolution Human Generation
abstract
Human generation has achieved significant progress. Nonetheless, existing methods still struggle to synthesize specific regions such as faces and hands. We argue that the main reason is rooted in the training data. A holistic human dataset inevitably has insufficient and low-resolution information on local parts. Therefore, we propose to use multisource datasets with various resolution images to jointly learn a high-resolution human generative model. However, multi-source data inherently a) contains different parts that do not spatially align into a coherent human, and b) comes with different scales. To tackle these challenges, we propose an end-to-end framework, UnitedHuman, that empowers continuous GAN with the ability to effectively utilize multi-source data for high-resolution human generation. Specifically, 1) we design a Multi-Source Spatial Transformer that spatially aligns multi-source images to full-body space with a human parametric model. 2) Next, a continuous GAN is proposed with global-structural guidance and CutMix consistency. Patches from different datasets are then sampled and transformed to supervise the training of this scale-invariant generative model. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model jointly learned from multi-source data achieves superior quality than those learned from a holistic dataset. 2023 OrthoPlanes: A Novel Representation for Better 3D-Awareness of GANs
abstract
We present a new method for generating realistic and view-consistent images with fine geometry from 2D image collections. Our method proposes a hybrid explicit-implicit representation called OrthoPlanes, which encodes fine-grained 3D information in feature maps that can be efficiently generated by modifying 2D StyleGANs. Compared to previous representations, our method has better scalability and expressiveness with clear and explicit information. As a result, our method can handle more challenging view-angles and synthesize articulated objects with high spatial degree of freedom. Experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results on FFHQ and SHHQ datasets, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Project page: https://orthoplanes.github.io/.

2023 3DHumanGAN: 3D-Aware Human Image Generation with 3D Pose Mapping
abstract
We present 3DHumanGAN, a 3D-aware generative adversarial network that synthesizes photo-like images of full-body humans with consistent appearances under different view-angles and body-poses. To tackle the representational and computational challenges in synthesizing the articulated structure of human bodies, we propose a novel generator architecture in which a 2D convolutional backbone is modulated by a 3D pose mapping network. The 3D pose mapping network is formulated as a renderable implicit function conditioned on a posed 3D human mesh. This design has several merits: i) it leverages the strength of 2D GANs to produce high-quality images; ii) it generates consistent images under varying view-angles and poses; iii) the model can incorporate the 3D human prior and enable pose conditioning. Our model is adversarially learned from a collection of web images needless of manual annotation.

2020 Low-cost prediction-based fault protection strategy
abstract
Increasing failures from transient faults necessitates the cost-efficient protection mechanism that will be always activated. Thus, we propose a novel prediction-based transient fault protection strategy as a low-cost software-only technique. Instead of re-executing expensive computations for validation, an output prediction is used to cheaply determine an approximate value for a sequence of computation. When actual computation and prediction agree within a predefined acceptable range, the computation is assumed fault-free, and expensive re-computation can be skipped. With our approach, a significant reduction in dynamic instruction counts is possible. Missed faults may occur, but their occurrences can be explicitly kept to a small amount with a proper acceptable range. For evaluation, we build an automatic compilation system, called RSkip, that transforms a program into a resilient executable with the prediction-based protection scheme. Prior instruction replication work shows 2.33x execution time compared to the unreliable execution over nine compute-intensive benchmarks. With a control for the loss in protection rate, RSkip can reduce the protection overhead to 1.27x by skipping redundant computation in our target loops at a rate of 81.10

2019 Learning to Explore Intrinsic Saliency for Stereoscopic Video
abstract
The human visual system excels at biasing the stereoscopic visual signals by the attention mechanisms. Traditional methods relying on the low-level features and depth relevant information for stereoscopic video saliency prediction have fundamental limitations. For example, it is cumbersome to model the interactions between multiple visual cues including spatial, temporal, and depth information as a result of the sophistication. In this paper, we argue that the high-level features are crucial and resort to the deep learning framework to learn the saliency map of stereoscopic videos. Driven by spatio-temporal coherence from consecutive frames, the model first imitates the mechanism of saliency by taking advantage of the 3D convolutional neural network. Subsequently, the saliency originated from the intrinsic depth is derived based on the correlations between left and right views in a data-driven manner. Finally, a Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory (Conv-LSTM) based fusion network is developed to model the instantaneous interactions between spatio-temporal and depth attributes, such that the ultimate stereoscopic saliency maps over time are produced. Moreover, we establish a new large-scale stereoscopic video saliency dataset (SVS) including 175 stereoscopic video sequences and their fixation density annotations, aiming to comprehensively study the intrinsic attributes for stereoscopic video saliency detection. Extensive experiments show that our proposed model can achieve superior performance compared to the state-of-the-art methods on the newly built dataset for stereoscopic videos.

2018 Sculptor: Flexible Approximation with Selective Dynamic Loop Perforation
abstract
Loop perforation is one of the most well known software techniques in approximate computing. It transforms loops to periodically skip subsets of their iterations. It is general, simple, and effective. However, during analysis, it only considers the number of instructions to skip, but does not consider the differences between instructions and loop iterations. Based on our observation, these differences have considerable influence on performance and accuracy. To improve traditional perforation, we introduce selective dynamic loop perforation, a general approximation technique that automatically transforms loops to skip selected instructions in selected iterations. It provides the flexibility to craft approximation strategies at the dynamic instruction level. The main challenges in selective dynamic loop perforation are how to capture the characteristics of instructions, optimize perforation strategies based on these characteristics, and minimize additional runtime overhead. In this paper, we propose several compiler optimizations to resolve these challenges, including optimized instruction-level, load based and store based selective perforation, and self-directed dynamic perforation with a dynamic start and dynamic perforation rates. Across a range of 8 applications from various domains, selective dynamic loop perforation achieves average speedups of 2.89x and 4.07x with 5% and 10% error budgets, while traditional loop perforation achieves 1.47x and 1.93x, respectively, for the same error budgets.

2015 RadixBoost: A hardware acceleration structure for scalable radix sort on graphic processors
abstract
In this paper, we propose RadixBoost, a hardware acceleration structure for scalable 32-bit integer radix sort on GPU. The whole structure is integrated into a GPU microarchitecture as a special functional unit and can be started by new instructions. Our design enables a significantly faster sorting procedure for general purpose GPU computing. The RadixBoost architecture was validated by an FPGA prototype integrated in FPGA-based GPU microarchitecture simulator, Fastlanes. An ASIC evaluation of RadixBoost was also performed. Our results proved that RadixBoost outperformed its GPU software equivalent by a factor of over 6 with an 1% and 3% increase in area and power respectively in cutting-edge Fermi GPU.
