2024 Document-Level Relation Extraction Based on Machine Reading Comprehension and Hybrid Pointer-sequence Labeling
abstract
Document-level relational extraction requires reading, memorization, and reasoning to discover relevant factual information in multiple sentences. It is difficult for the current hierarchical network and graph network methods to fully capture the structural information behind the document and make natural reasoning from the context. Different from the previous methods, this article reconstructs the relation extraction task into a machine reading comprehension task. Each pair of entities and relationships is characterized by a question template, and the extraction of entities and relationships is translated into identifying answers from the context. To enhance the context comprehension ability of the extraction model and achieve more precise extraction, we introduce large language models (LLMs) during question construction, enabling the generation of exemplary answers. Besides, to solve the multi-label and multi-entity problems in documents, we propose a new answer extraction model based on hybrid pointer-sequence labeling, which improves the reasoning ability of the model and realizes the extraction of zero or multiple answers in documents. Extensive experiments on three public datasets show that the proposed method is effective.

2018 Using feature points and angles between them to recognise facial expression by a neural network approach
abstract
In this study, the authors propose a neural network (NN) method that uses feature points and the angles formed between the points to recognise facial expressions. Accurate facial expression recognition is an important part of affective computing with many practical applications. Yet, achieving acceptable levels of facial recognition accuracy has proven difficult. Feature points and the distances between the points are used to model basic expressions in NN‐based approaches, but, in some cases, they cannot generate satisfactory performance. They expand on the characterisation of facial expression by considering the angles formed between feature points to augment the amount of information that is sent to the NNs. Furthermore, to circumvent a common challenge in facial expressions recognition, which is the difficulty of differentiating among several expressions, they designed a post‐processing step to assess the output of the NN against a threshold. The whole method makes a decision only when the output of the NN exceeds the threshold. Otherwise, the frame under consideration is assigned to a ‘no decision’ class. They tested our method on the widely used facial expression CK + database and found that it can achieve good accuracy.

2018 Study on Ontology Ranking Models Based on the Ensemble Learning
abstract
This article describes how more knowledge appears on the Internet than in an ontological form. Displaying results to users precisely when searching is the key issue of the research on ontology retrieval. The considered factors of ontology ranking are not only limited to internal character-matching, but analysis of metadata, including the entities, structures and the relations in ontologies. Currently, existing single feature ranking algorithms focus on the structures, elements and the contents of a certain aspect in ontology, thus, the results are not satisfactory. Combining multiple single-featured models seems to achieve better results, but the objectivity and versatility of models' weights are debatable. Machine learning effectively solves the problem and putting advantages of ranking learning algorithms together is the pressing issue. So we propose ensemble learning strategies to combine different algorithms in ontology ranking. And the ranking result is more satisfied compared to Swoogle and base algorithms.

2017 Building Task-Oriented Dialogue Systems for Online Shopping
abstract
We present a general solution towards building task-oriented dialogue systems for online shopping, aiming to assist online customers in completing various purchase-related tasks, such as searching products and answering questions, in a natural language conversation manner. As a pioneering work, we show what & how existing NLP techniques, data resources, and crowdsourcing can be leveraged to build such task-oriented dialogue systems for E-commerce usage. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we integrate our system into a mobile online shopping app. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an AI bot in Chinese is practically used in online shopping scenario with millions of real consumers. Interesting and insightful observations are shown in the experimental part, based on the analysis of human-bot conversation log. Several current challenges are also pointed out as our future directions.

2017 Scene text detection based on pruning strategy of MSER-trees and Linkage-trees
abstract
The extraction and recognition of scene text in images is an important way to understand the semantic information in image. By now, scene text detection is still a challenging problem. In this paper, we present a scene text localization method based on the pruning of Maximally Stable Extremal Region (MSER) tree and Linkage-tree. Concretely, the MSER-tree is first constructed and overlap MSERs are removed by the nonmaximum suppression strategy. Further, the linkage-trees are constructed and pruned based on the features considering the nodes themselves and their siblings. Finally, the non-text lines are eliminated based on to the CNN-based features and intensity contrast. Experimental results on two challenging datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2017 An end-to-end recognizer for in-air handwritten Chinese characters based on a new recurrent neural networks
abstract
In-air handwriting is becoming a new human-computer interaction way. It is a challenging task to accurately recognizing in-air handwritten Chinese characters. In this paper, we present an end-to-end recognizer for in-air handwritten Chinese characters by using recurrent neural networks (RNN). Compared with the existing methods, the proposed RNN based methods does not need to explicitly extract features and directly take a sequence of dot locations as input. We have made two aspects of modifications on traditional RNN for improving the recognition accuracy. Concretely, the sum-pooling is performed on the states of each hidden layers, and a faster convergence in training can be obtained. Additionally, an assistant objective function is introduced into the conventional loss function, which brings a slight increase of performance. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the experiments are carried out on the IAHCC-UCAS2016 datasets to compare ours with other state-of-art methods. The experimental results show that the proposed RNN model has a fairly high recognition accuracy for in-air handwritten Chinese characters.

2017 Sparse Online Learning of Image Similarity
abstract
Learning image similarity plays a critical role in real-world multimedia information retrieval applications, especially in Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) tasks, in which an accurate retrieval of visually similar objects largely relies on an effective image similarity function. Crafting a good similarity function is very challenging because visual contents of images are often represented as feature vectors in high-dimensional spaces, for example, via bag-of-words (BoW) representations, and traditional rigid similarity functions, for example, cosine similarity, are often suboptimal for CBIR tasks. In this article, we address this fundamental problem, that is, learning to optimize image similarity with sparse and high-dimensional representations from large-scale training data, and propose a novel scheme of Sparse Online Learning of Image Similarity (SOLIS). In contrast to many existing image-similarity learning algorithms that are designed to work with low-dimensional data, SOLIS is able to learn image similarity from large-scale image data in sparse and high-dimensional spaces. Our encouraging results showed that the proposed new technique achieves highly competitive accuracy as compared to the state-of-the-art approaches but enjoys significant advantages in computational efficiency, model sparsity, and retrieval scalability, making it more practical for real-world multimedia retrieval applications.

2017 Novel Visual and Statistical Image Features for Microblogs News Verification
abstract
Microblog has been a popular media platform for reporting and propagating news. However, fake news spreading on microblogs would severely jeopardize its public credibility. To identify the truthfulness of news on microblogs, images are very crucial content. In this paper, we explore the key role of image content in the task of automatic news verification on microblogs. Existing approaches to news verification depend on features extracted mainly from the text content of news tweets, while image features for news verification are often ignored. According to our study, however, images are very popular and have a great influence on microblogs news propagation. In addition, fake and real news events have different image distribution patterns. Therefore, we propose several visual and statistical features to characterize these patterns visually and statistically for detecting fake news. Experiments on a real-world multimedia dataset collected from Sina Weibo validate the effectiveness of our proposed image features. The news verification performance of our method outperforms baseline methods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt that systematically explores image features on news verification task.

2016 Aggregating Inter-Sentence Information to Enhance Relation Extraction
abstract
Previous work for relation extraction from free text is mainly based on intra-sentence information. As relations might be mentioned across sentences, inter-sentence information can be leveraged to improve distantly supervised relation extraction. To effectively exploit inter-sentence information, we propose a ranking based approach, which first learns a scoring function based on a listwise learning-to-rank model and then uses it for multi-label relation extraction. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of our method for aggregating information across sentences. Additionally, to further improve the ranking of high-quality extractions, we propose an effective method to rank relations from different entity pairs. This method can be easily integrated into our overall relation extraction framework, and boosts the precision significantly.

2016 DocChat: An Information Retrieval Approach for Chatbot Engines Using Unstructured Documents
abstract
Most current chatbot engines are designed to reply to user utterances based on existing utterance-response (or Q-R) 1 pairs. In this paper, we present DocChat, a novel information retrieval approach for chatbot engines that can leverage unstructured documents, instead of Q-R pairs, to respond to utterances.A learning to rank model with features designed at different levels of granularity is proposed to measure the relevance between utterances and responses directly. We evaluate our proposed approach in both English and Chinese: (i) For English, we evaluate Doc-Chat on WikiQA and QASent, two answer sentence selection tasks, and compare it with state-of-the-art methods.Reasonable improvements and good adaptability are observed.(ii) For Chinese, we compare DocChat with XiaoIce 2 , a famous chitchat engine in China, and side-by-side evaluation shows that DocChat is a perfect complement for chatbot engines using Q-R pairs as main source of responses.

2016 Learning Geographical Hierarchy Features via a Compositional Model
abstract
Image location prediction is used to estimate the geolocation where an image is taken, which is important for many image applications, such as image retrieval, image browsing, and organization. Since a social image contains heterogeneous contents, such as visual content and textual content, effectively incorporating these contents to predict location is nontrivial. Moreover, it is observed that image content patterns and the locations where they may appear correlate hierarchically. Traditional image location prediction methods mainly adopt a single-level architecture and assume images are independently distributed in geographical space, which is not directly adaptable to the hierarchical correlation. In this paper, we propose a geographically hierarchical bi-modal deep belief network (GH-BDBN) model, which is a compositional learning architecture that integrates multi-modal deep learning model with a non-parametric hierarchical prior model. GH-BDBN learns a joint representation capturing the correlations among different types of image content using a bi-modal DBN, with a geographically hierarchical prior over the joint representation to model the hierarchical correlation between image content and location. Then, an efficient inference algorithm is proposed to learn the parameters and the geographical hierarchical structure of geographical locations. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our model for image location prediction.
