2021 Image Restoration for Under-Display Camera
abstract
The new trend of full-screen devices encourages us to position a camera behind a screen. Removing the bezel and centralizing the camera under the screen brings larger display-to-body ratio and enhances eye contact in video chat, but also causes image degradation. In this paper, we focus on a newly-defined Under-Display Camera (UDC), as a novel real-world single image restoration problem. First, we take a 4k Transparent OLED (T-OLED) and a phone Pentile OLED (P-OLED) and analyze their optical systems to understand the degradation. Second, we design a Monitor-Camera Imaging System (MCIS) for easier real pair data acquisition, and a model-based data synthesizing pipeline to generate Point Spread Function (PSF) and UDC data only from display pattern and camera measurements. Finally, we resolve the complicated degradation using deconvolution-based pipeline and learning-based methods. Our model demonstrates a real-time high-quality restoration. The presented methods and results reveal the promising research values and directions of UDC.

2018 Accelerated Wirtinger Flow for Multiplexed Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy
abstract
Fourier ptychographic microscopy enables gigapixel-scale imaging, with both large field-of-view and high resolution. Using a set of low-resolution images that are recorded under varying illumination angles, the goal is to computationally reconstruct high-resolution phase and amplitude images. To increase temporal resolution, one may use multiplexed measurements where the sample is illuminated simultaneously from a subset of the angles. In this paper, we develop an algorithm for Fourier ptychographic microscopy with such multiplexed illumination. Specifically, we consider gradient descent type updates and propose an analytical step size that ensures the convergence of the iterates to a stationary point. Furthermore, we propose an accelerated version of our algorithm (with the same step size) which significantly improves the convergence speed. We demonstrate that the practical performance of our algorithm is identical to the case where the step size is manually tuned. Finally, we apply our parameter-free approach to real data and validate its applicability.

2016 Tomographic reconstruction of atmospheric density with Mumford-Shah functionals
abstract
Knowledge of the three-dimensional spatial structure of Earth's uppermost atmosphere is necessary both to understand its role as a dynamic buffer against the solar-driven environment of interplanetary space as well as to assess the rate of its permanent escape from Earth's gravity through evaporation. The only available means of inferring atmospheric structure at these altitudes is through space-based remote sensing of solar radiation that is resonantly scattered or fluoresced by the ambient atoms. In this paper, the resultant tomographic image formation problem is formulated as an edge-preserving reconstruction algorithm based on the framework originally proposed by Mumford & Shah. Statistical interpretation of this reconstruction solution is formulated in the context of MAP estimation. The numerical results illustrate that the proposed reconstruction algorithm is capable of obtaining physically meaningful solutions that are superior to previous results formulated based on parametric assumptions on the unknown density.
