FastAnimate: Towards Learnable Template Construction and Pose Deformation for Fast 3D Human Avatar Animationabstract3D human avatar animation aims at transforming a human avatar from an arbitrary initial pose to a specified target pose using deformation algorithms. Existing approaches typically divide this task into two stages: canonical template construction and target pose deformation. However, current template construction methods demand extensive skeletal rigging and often produce artifacts in contact regions. Moreover, target pose deformation suffers from structural distortions caused by Linear Blend Skinning (LBS), which significantly undermines animation realism. To address these problems, we propose a unified learning-based framework to address both challenges in two phases. For the former phase, to overcome the inefficiencies and artifacts during template construction, we leverage a U-Net architecture that decouples texture and pose information in a feed-forward process, enabling fast generation of a human template. For the latter phase, we propose a data-driven refinement technique that enhances structural integrity. Extensive experiments show that our model delivers consistent performance across diverse poses with an optimal balance between efficiency and quality, surpassing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. | 2026 | The Stackelberg Speaker: Optimizing Persuasive Communication in Social Deduction GamesabstractLarge language model (LLM) agents have shown remarkable progress in social deduction games (SDGs).However, existing approaches primarily focus on information processing and strategy selection, overlooking the significance of persuasive communication in influencing other players' beliefs and responses. In SDGs, success depends not only on making correct deductions but also on convincing others to respond in alignment with one's intent. To address this limitation, we formalize turn-based dialogue in SDGs as a Stackelberg competition, where the current player acts as the leader who strategically influences the follower's response.Building on this theoretical foundation, we propose a reinforcement learning framework that trains agents to optimize utterances for persuasive impact.Through comprehensive experiments across four diverse social deduction benchmarks, we demonstrate that our agents significantly outperform baselines. This work represents a significant step toward developing AI agents capable of strategic social influence, with implications extending to scenarios requiring persuasive communication. | 2026 | MultiGO++: Monocular 3D Clothed Human Reconstruction via Geometry-Texture CollaborationabstractMonocular 3D clothed human reconstruction aims to generate a complete and realistic textured 3D avatar from a single image. Existing methods are commonly trained under multi-view supervision with annotated geometric priors, and during inference, these priors are estimated by the pre-trained network from the monocular input. These methods are constrained by three key limitations: texturally by the unavailability of training data, geometrically by inaccurate external priors, and systematically by biased single-modality supervision, all leading to suboptimal reconstruction. To address these issues, we propose a novel reconstruction framework, named MultiGO++, which achieves effective systematic geometry-texture collaboration. It consists of three core parts: (1) a multi-source texture synthesis strategy that constructs more than 15,000 3D textured human scans to improve the performance of texture quality estimation in challenging scenarios; (2) a region-aware shape extraction module that extracts features and enables feature interactions from each body region to obtain geometry information and a Fourier geometry encoder that mitigates the modality gap to achieve effective geometry learning; (3) a dual reconstruction U-Net that leverages geometry-texture collaborative features to refine and generate high-fidelity textured 3D human meshes. Extensive experiments on two benchmarks and numerous in-the-wild cases show the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art approaches. | 2025 | StyleStudio: Text-Driven Style Transfer with Selective Control of Style ElementsabstractText-driven style transfer aims to merge the style of a reference image with content described by a text prompt. Recent advancements in text-to-image models have improved the nuance of style transformations, yet significant challenges remain, particularly with overfitting to reference styles, limiting stylistic control, and misaligning with textual content. In this paper, we propose three complementary strategies to address these issues. First, we introduce a cross-modal Adaptive Instance Normalization (AdaIN) mechanism for better integration of style and text features, enhancing alignment. Second, we develop a Style-based Classifier-Free Guidance (SCFG) approach that enables selective control over stylistic elements, reducing irrelevant influences. Finally, we incorporate a teacher model during early generation stages to stabilize spatial layouts and mitigate artifacts. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate significant improvements in style transfer quality and alignment with textual prompts. Furthermore, our approach can be integrated into existing style transfer frameworks without fine-tuning. Mingkun Lei, Beier Zhu, Hao Wang 0094, Chi Zhang 0067

MultiGO: Towards Multi-level Geometry Learning for Monocular 3D Textured Human ReconstructionabstractThis paper investigates the research task of reconstructing the 3D clothed human body from a monocular image. Due to the inherent ambiguity of single-view input, existing approaches leverage pre-trained SMPL(-X) estimation models or generative models to provide auxiliary information for human reconstruction. However, these methods capture only the general human body geometry and overlook specific geometric details, leading to inaccurate skeleton reconstruction, incorrect joint positions, and unclear cloth wrinkles. In response to these issues, we propose a multi-level geometry learning framework. Technically, we design three key components: skeleton-level enhancement, joint-level augmentation, and wrinkle-level refinement modules. Specifically, we effectively integrate the projected 3D Fourier features into a Gaussian reconstruction model, introduce perturbations to improve joint depth estimation during training, and refine the human coarse wrinkles by resembling the de-noising process of the diffusion model. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments on two test sets show the superior performance of our approach compared to state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. | 2025 | BrainVis: Exploring the Bridge between Brain and Visual Signals via Image ReconstructionabstractAnalyzing and reconstructing visual stimuli from brain signals effectively advances our understanding of the human visual system. However, EEG signals are complex and contain significant noise, leading to substantial limitations in existing approaches of visual stimuli reconstruction from EEG. These limitations include difficulties in aligning EEG embeddings with fine-grained semantic information and a heavy reliance on additional large-scale datasets for training. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach called BrainVis. This approach introduces a self-supervised paradigm to learn EEG time-domain features and incorporates frequency-domain features to enhance EEG representations. We also propose a multi-modal alignment method called semantic interpolation to achieve fine-grained semantic reconstruction. Additionally, we employ cascaded diffusion models to reconstruct images. Using only 9.1% of the training data required by previous mask modeling works, our proposed BrainVis outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both semantic fidelity reconstruction and generation quality. | 2025 | Diversified Augmentation with Domain Adaptation for Debiased Video Temporal GroundingabstractTemporal sentence grounding in videos (TSGV) faces challenges due to public TSGV datasets containing significant temporal biases, which are attributed to the uneven temporal distributions of target moments. Existing methods generate augmented videos, where target moments are forced to have varying temporal locations. However, since the video lengths of the given datasets have small variations, only changing the temporal locations results in poor generalization ability in videos with varying lengths. In this paper, we propose a novel training framework complemented by diversified data augmentation and a domain discriminator. The data augmentation generates videos with various lengths and target moment locations to diversify temporal distributions. However, augmented videos inevitably exhibit distinct feature distributions which may introduce noise. To address this, we design a domain adaptation auxiliary task to diminish feature discrepancies between original and augmented videos. We also encourage the model to produce distinct predictions for videos with the same text queries but different moment locations to promote debiased training. Experiments on Charades-CD and ActivityNet-CD datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and generalization abilities of our method in multiple grounding structures, achieving state-of-the-art results. | 2025 | DVM: Towards Controllable LLM Agents in Social Deduction GamesabstractLarge Language Models (LLMs) have advanced the capability of game agents in social deduction games (SDGs). These games rely heavily on conversation-driven interactions and require agents to infer, make decisions, and express based on such information. While this progress leads to more sophisticated and strategic non-player characters (NPCs) in SDGs, there exists a need to control the proficiency of these agents. This control not only ensures that NPCs can adapt to varying difficulty levels during gameplay, but also provides insights into the safety and fairness of LLM agents. In this paper, we present DVM, a novel framework for developing controllable LLM agents for SDGs, and demonstrate its implementation on one of the most popular SDGs, Werewolf. DVM comprises three main components: Predictor, Decider, and Discussor. By integrating reinforcement learning with a win rate-constrained decision chain reward mechanism, we enable agents to dynamically adjust their gameplay proficiency to achieve specified win rates. Experiments show that DVM not only outperforms existing methods in the Werewolf game, but also successfully modulates its performance levels to meet predefined win rate targets. These results pave the way for LLM agents’ adaptive and balanced gameplay in SDGs, opening new avenues for research in controllable game agents. | 2025 | Outdoor Monocular SLAM with Global Scale-Consistent 3D Gaussian Pointmapsabstract3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become a popular solution in SLAM due to its high-fidelity and real-time novel view synthesis performance. However, some previous 3DGS SLAM methods employ a differentiable rendering pipeline for tracking, lack geometric priors in outdoor scenes. Other approaches introduce separate tracking modules, but they accumulate errors with significant camera movement, leading to scale drift. To address these challenges, we propose a robust RGB-only outdoor 3DGS SLAM method: S3PO-GS. Technically, we establish a self-consistent tracking module anchored in the 3DGS pointmap, which avoids cumulative scale drift and achieves more precise and robust tracking with fewer iterations. Additionally, we design a patch-based pointmap dynamic mapping module, which introduces geometric priors while avoiding scale ambiguity. This significantly enhances tracking accuracy and the quality of scene reconstruction, making it particularly suitable for complex outdoor environments. Our experiments on the Waymo, KITTI, and DL3DV datasets demonstrate that S3PO-GS achieves state-of-the-art results in novel view synthesis and outperforms other 3DGS SLAM methods in tracking accuracy. | 2025 | Enhanced Cross-modal 3D Retrieval via Tri-modal ReconstructionabstractCross-modal 3D retrieval is a critical yet challenging task, aiming to achieve bi-directional retrieval between 3D and text modalities. Current methods predominantly rely on a certain 3D representation (e.g., point cloud), with few exploiting the 2D-3D consistency and complementary relationships, which constrains their performance. To bridge this gap, we propose to adopt multi-view images and point clouds to jointly represent 3D shapes, facilitating tri-modal alignment (i.e., image, point, text) for enhanced cross-modal 3D retrieval. Notably, we introduce tri-modal reconstruction to improve the generalization ability of encoders. Given point features, we reconstruct image features under the guidance of text features, and vice versa. With well-aligned point cloud and multi-view image features, we aggregate them as multimodal embeddings through fine-grained 2D-3D fusion to enhance geometric and semantic understanding. Recognizing the significant noise in current datasets where many 3D shapes and texts share similar semantics, we employ hard negative contrastive training to emphasize harder negatives with greater significance, leading to robust discriminative embeddings. Extensive experiments on the Text2Shape dataset demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods in both shape-to-text and text-to-shape retrieval tasks by a substantial margin. | 2025 | SMPL Normal Map Is All You Need for Single-view Textured Human ReconstructionabstractSingle-view textured human reconstruction aims to reconstruct a clothed 3D digital human by inputting a monocular 2D image. Existing approaches include feed-forward methods, limited by scarce 3D human data, and diffusion-based methods, prone to erroneous 2D hallucinations. To address these issues, we propose a novel SMPL normal map Equipped 3D Human Reconstruction (SEHR) framework, integrating a pretrained large 3D reconstruction model with human geometry prior. SEHR performs single-view human reconstruction without using a preset diffusion model in one forward propagation. Concretely, SEHR consists of two key components: SMPL Normal Map Guidance (SNMG) and SMPL Normal Map Constraint (SNMC). SNMG incorporates SMPL normal maps into an auxiliary network to provide improved body shape guidance. SNMC enhances invisible body parts by constraining the model to predict an extra SMPL normal Gaussians. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that SEHR outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods. Wenhao Shen, Gangjian Zhang, Nanjie Yao, Xuanmeng Zhang, Hao Wang 0094

EG-Gaussian: Epipolar Geometry and Graph Network Enhanced 3D Gaussian SplattingabstractIn this paper, we explore an open research problem concerning the reconstruction of 3D scenes from images. Recent methods have adopt 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) to produce 3D scenes due to its efficient training process. However, these methodologies may generate incomplete 3D scenes or blurred multiviews. This is because of (1) inaccurate 3DGS point initialization and (2) the tendency of 3DGS to flatten 3D Gaussians with the sparse-view input. To address these issues, we propose a novel framework EG-Gaussian, which utilizes epipolar geometry and graph networks for 3D scene reconstruction. Initially, we integrate epipolar geometry into the 3DGS initialization phase to enhance initial 3DGS point construction. Then, we specifically design a graph learning module to refine 3DGS spatial features, in which we incorporate both spatial coordinates and angular relationships among neighboring points. Experiments on indoor and outdoor benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach significantly improves reconstruction accuracy compared to 3DGS-based methods. Beizhen Zhao, Hao Wang 0094

ADHMR: Aligning Diffusion-based Human Mesh Recovery via Direct Preference OptimizationabstractHuman mesh recovery (HMR) from a single image is inherently ill-posed due to depth ambiguity and occlusions. Probabilistic methods have tried to solve this by generating numerous plausible 3D human mesh predictions, but they often exhibit misalignment with 2D image observations and weak robustness to in-the-wild images. To address these issues, we propose ADHMR, a framework that Aligns a Diffusion-based HMR model in a preference optimization manner. First, we train a human mesh prediction assessment model, HMR-Scorer, capable of evaluating predictions even for in-the-wild images without 3D annotations. We then use HMR-Scorer to create a preference dataset, where each input image has a pair of winner and loser mesh predictions. This dataset is used to finetune the base model using direct preference optimization. Moreover, HMR-Scorer also helps improve existing HMR models by data cleaning, even with fewer training samples. Extensive experiments show that ADHMR outperforms current state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at: https://github.com/shenwenhao01/ADHMR. | 2025 | SCA3D: Enhancing Cross-Modal 3D Retrieval via 3D Shape and Caption Paired Data AugmentationabstractThe cross-modal 3D retrieval task aims to achieve mutual matching between text descriptions and 3D shapes. This has the potential to enhance the interaction between natural language and the 3D environment, especially within the realms of robotics and embodied artificial intelligence (AI) applications. However, the scarcity and expensiveness of 3D data constrain the performance of existing cross-modal 3D retrieval methods. These methods heavily rely on features derived from the limited number of 3D shapes, resulting in poor generalization ability across diverse scenarios. To address this challenge, we introduce SCA3D, a novel 3D shape and caption online data augmentation method for cross-modal 3D retrieval. Our approach uses the LLaVA model to create a component library, captioning each segmented part of every 3D shape within the dataset. Notably, it facilitates the generation of extensive new 3D-text pairs containing new semantic features. We employ both inter and intra distances to align various components into a new 3D shape, ensuring that the components do not overlap and are closely fitted. Further, text templates are utilized to process the captions of each component and generate new text descriptions. Besides, we use unimodal encoders to extract embeddings for 3D shapes and texts based on the enriched dataset. We then calculate fine-grained cross-modal similarity using Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) and enhance cross-modal matching with contrastive learning, enabling bidirectional retrieval between texts and 3D shapes. Extensive experiments show our SCA3D outperforms previous works on the Text2Shape dataset, raising the Shape-to-Text RR@1 score from 20.03 to 27.22 and the Text-to-Shape RR@1 score from 13.12 to 16.67. | 2025 | RGB-Only Gaussian Splatting SLAM for Unbounded Outdoor Scenesabstract3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has become a popular solution in SLAM, as it can produce high-fidelity novel views. However, previous GS-based methods primarily target indoor scenes and rely on RGB-D sensors or pretrained depth estimation models, hence underperforming in outdoor scenarios. To address this issue, we propose a RGB-only gaussian splatting SLAM method for unbounded out-door scenes—OpenGS-SLAM. Technically, we first employ a pointmap regression network to generate consistent pointmaps between frames for pose estimation. Compared to commonly used depth maps, pointmaps include spatial relationships and scene geometry across multiple views, enabling robust camera pose estimation. Then, we propose integrating the estimated camera poses with 3DGS rendering as an end-to-end differentiable pipeline. Our method achieves simultaneous optimization of camera poses and 3DGS scene parameters, significantly enhancing system tracking accuracy. Specifically, we also design an adaptive scale mapper for the pointmap regression network, which provides more accurate pointmap mapping to the 3DGS map representation. Our experiments on the Waymo dataset demonstrate that OpenGS-SLAM reduces tracking error to 9.8% of previous 3DGS methods, and achieves state-of-the-art results in novel view synthesis. | 2025 | Monocular Endoscopic Tissue 3D Reconstruction with Multi-Level Geometry RegularizationabstractReconstructing deformable endoscopic tissues is crucial for achieving robot-assisted surgery. However, 3D Gaussian Splatting-based approaches encounter challenges in achieving consistent tissue surface reconstruction, while existing NeRF-based methods lack real-time rendering capabilities. In pursuit of both smooth deformable surfaces and real-time rendering, we introduce a novel approach based on 3D Gaussian Splatting. Specifically, we introduce surface-aware reconstruction, initially employing a Sign Distance Field-based method to construct a mesh, subsequently utilizing this mesh to constrain the Gaussian Splatting reconstruction process. Furthermore, to ensure the generation of physically plausible deformations, we incorporate local rigidity and global non-rigidity restrictions to guide Gaussian deformation, tailored for the highly deformable nature of soft endoscopic tissue. Based on 3D Gaussian Splatting, our proposed method delivers a fast rendering process and smooth surface appearances. Quantitative and qualitative analysis against alternative methodologies shows that our approach achieves solid reconstruction quality in both textures and geometries. Yangsen Chen, Hao Wang 0094

3D Cartoon Face Generation with Controllable Expressions from a Single GAN ImageabstractIn this paper, we investigate an open research task of generating 3D cartoon face shapes from single 2D GAN generated human faces and without 3D supervision, where we can also manipulate the facial expressions of the 3D shapes. To this end, we discover the semantic meanings of StyleGAN latent space, such that we are able to produce face images of various expressions, poses, and lighting conditions by controlling the latent codes. Specifically, we first finetune the pretrained StyleGAN face model on the cartoon datasets. By feeding the same latent codes to face and cartoon generation models, we aim to realize the translation from 2D human face images to cartoon styled avatars. We then discover semantic directions of the GAN latent space, in an attempt to change the facial expressions while preserving the original identity. As we do not have any 3D annotations for cartoon faces, we manipulate the latent codes to generate images with different poses and lighting conditions, such that we can reconstruct the 3D cartoon face shapes. We validate the efficacy of our method on three cartoon datasets qualitatively and quantitatively. Hao Wang 0094, Wenhao Shen, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao

Graph-Guided Dual-Level Augmentation for 3D Scene Segmentationabstract3D point cloud segmentation aims to assign semantic labels to individual points in a scene for fine-grained spatial understanding. Existing methods typically adopt data augmentation to alleviate the burden of large-scale annotation. However, most augmentation strategies only focus on local transformations or semantic recomposition, lacking the consideration of global structural dependencies within scenes. To address this limitation, we propose a graph-guided data augmentation framework with dual-level constraints for realistic 3D scene synthesis. Our method learns object relationship statistics from real-world data to construct guiding graphs for scene generation. Local-level constraints enforce geometric plausibility and semantic consistency between objects, while global-level constraints maintain the topological structure of the scene by aligning the generated layout with the guiding graph. | 2025 | SAT: Supervisor Regularization and Animation Augmentation for Two-process Monocular Texture 3D Human ReconstructionabstractMonocular texture 3D human reconstruction aims to create a complete 3D digital avatar from just a single front-view human RGB image. However, the geometric ambiguity inherent in a single 2D image and the scarcity of 3D human training data are the main obstacles limiting progress in this field. To address these issues, current methods employ prior geometric estimation networks to derive various human geometric forms, such as the SMPL model and normal maps. However, they struggle to integrate these modalities effectively, leading to view inconsistencies, such as facial distortions. To this end, we propose a two-process 3D human reconstruction framework, SAT, which seamlessly learns various prior geometries in a unified manner and reconstructs high-quality textured 3D avatars as the final output. To further facilitate geometry learning, we introduce a Supervisor Feature Regularization module. By employing a multi-view network with the same structure to provide intermediate features as training supervision, these varied geometric priors can be better fused. To tackle data scarcity and further improve reconstruction quality, we also propose an Online Animation Augmentation module. By building a one-feed-forward animation network, we augment a massive number of samples from the original 3D human data online for model training. | 2025 | MultiMind: Enhancing Werewolf Agents with Multimodal Reasoning and Theory of MindabstractLarge Language Model (LLM) agents have demonstrated impressive capabilities in social deduction games (SDGs) like Werewolf, where strategic reasoning and social deception are essential. However, current approaches remain limited to textual information, ignoring crucial multimodal cues such as facial expressions and tone of voice that humans naturally use to communicate. Moreover, existing SDG agents primarily focus on inferring other players' identities without modeling how others perceive themselves or fellow players. To address these limitations, we use One Night Ultimate Werewolf (ONUW) as a testbed and present MultiMind, the first framework integrating multimodal information into SDG agents. MultiMind processes facial expressions and vocal tones alongside verbal content, while employing a Theory of Mind (ToM) model to represent each player's suspicion levels toward others. By combining this ToM model with Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), our agent identifies communication strategies that minimize suspicion directed at itself. Through comprehensive evaluation in both agent-versus-agent simulations and studies with human players, we demonstrate MultiMind's superior performance in gameplay. | 2025 | Wavelet-GS: 3D Gaussian Splatting with Wavelet Decompositionabstract3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has revolutionized 3D scene reconstruction, which effectively balances rendering quality, efficiency, and speed. However, existing 3DGS approaches usually generate plausible outputs and face significant challenges in complex scene reconstruction, manifesting as incomplete holistic structural outlines and unclear local lighting effects. To address these issues simultaneously, we propose a novel decoupled optimization framework, which integrates wavelet decomposition into 3D Gaussian Splatting and 2D sampling. Technically, through 3D wavelet decomposition, our approach divides point clouds into high-frequency and low-frequency components, enabling targeted optimization for each. The low-frequency component captures global structural outlines and manages the distribution of Gaussians through voxelization. In contrast, the high-frequency component restores intricate geometric and textural details while incorporating a relight module to mitigate lighting artifacts and enhance photorealistic rendering. Additionally, a 2D wavelet decomposition is applied to the training images, simulating radiance variations. This provides critical guidance for high-frequency detail reconstruction, ensuring seamless integration of details with the global structure. Extensive experiments on challenging datasets demonstrate our method achieves state-of-the-art performance across various metrics, surpassing existing approaches and advancing the field of 3D scene reconstruction. | 2024 | HMR-Adapter: A Lightweight Adapter with Dual-Path Cross Augmentation for Expressive Human Mesh RecoveryabstractExpressive Human Mesh Recovery (HMR) involves reconstructing the 3D human body, including hands and face, from RGB images. It is difficult because humans are highly deformable, and hands are small and frequently occluded. Recent approaches have attempted to mitigate these issues using large datasets and models, but these solutions remain imperfect. Specifically, whole-body estimation models often inaccurately estimate hand poses, while hand expert models struggle with severe occlusions. To overcome these limitations, we introduce a dual-path cross augmentation framework with a novel adaptation approach called HMR-Adapter that enhances existing large HMR models. HMR-Adapter significantly improves expressive HMR performance by injecting additional guidance from other body parts. This approach refines hand pose predictions by incorporating body pose information and uses additional hand features to enhance body pose estimation in whole-body models. Remarkably, an HMR-Adapter with about 30M parameters significantly improves expressive HMR results by combining the adapted large whole-body and hand expert models. | 2023 | TAPS3D: Text-Guided 3D Textured Shape Generation from Pseudo SupervisionabstractIn this paper, we investigate an open research task of generating controllable 3D textured shapes from the given textual descriptions. Previous works either require ground truth caption labeling or extensive optimization time. To resolve these issues, we present a novel framework, TAPS3D, to train a text-guided 3D shape generator with pseudo captions. Specifically, based on rendered 2D images, we retrieve relevant words from the CLIP vocabulary and construct pseudo captions using templates. Our constructed captions provide high-level semantic supervision for generated 3D shapes. Further, in order to produce fine-grained textures and increase geometry diversity, we propose to adopt low-level image regularization to enable fake-rendered images to align with the real ones. During the inference phase, our proposed model can generate 3D textured shapes from the given text without any additional optimization. We conduct extensive experiments to analyze each of our proposed components and show the efficacy of our framework in generating high-fidelity 3D textured and text-relevant shapes. | 2023 | Learning Structural Representations for Recipe Generation and Food RetrievalabstractFood is significant to human daily life. In this paper, we are interested in learning structural representations for lengthy recipes, that can benefit the recipe generation and food cross-modal retrieval tasks. Different from the common vision-language data, here the food images contain mixed ingredients and target recipes are lengthy paragraphs, where we do not have annotations on structure information. To address the above limitations, we propose a novel method to unsupervisedly learn the sentence-level tree structures for the cooking recipes. Our approach brings together several novel ideas in a systematic framework: (1) exploiting an unsupervised learning approach to obtain the sentence-level tree structure labels before training; (2) generating trees of target recipes from images with the supervision of tree structure labels learned from (1); and (3) integrating the learned tree structures into the recipe generation and food cross-modal retrieval procedure. Our proposed model can produce good-quality sentence-level tree structures and coherent recipes. We achieve the state-of-the-art recipe generation and food cross-modal retrieval performance on the benchmark Recipe1M dataset. Hao Wang 0094, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao

Paired Cross-Modal Data Augmentation for Fine-Grained Image-to-Text RetrievalabstractThis paper investigates an open research problem of generating text-image pairs to improve the training of fine-grained image-to-text cross-modal retrieval task, and proposes a novel framework for paired data augmentation by uncovering the hidden semantic information of StyleGAN2 model. Specifically, we first train a StyleGAN2 model on the given dataset. We then project the real images back to the latent space of StyleGAN2 to obtain the latent codes. To make the generated images manipulatable, we further introduce a latent space alignment module to learn the alignment between StyleGAN2 latent codes and the corresponding textual caption features. When we do online paired data augmentation, we first generate augmented text through random token replacement, then pass the augmented text into the latent space alignment module to output the latent codes, which are finally fed to StyleGAN2 to generate the augmented images. We evaluate the efficacy of our augmented data approach on two public cross-modal retrieval datasets, in which the promising experimental results demonstrate the augmented text-image pair data can be trained together with the original data to boost the image-to-text cross-modal retrieval performance. | 2022 | Cross-Modal Graph With Meta Concepts for Video CaptioningabstractVideo captioning targets interpreting the complex visual contents as text descriptions, which requires the model to fully understand video scenes including objects and their interactions. Prevailing methods adopt off-the-shelf object detection networks to give object proposals and use the attention mechanism to model the relations between objects. They often miss some undefined semantic concepts of the pretrained model and fail to identify exact predicate relationships between objects. In this paper, we investigate an open research task of generating text descriptions for the given videos, and propose Cross-Modal Graph (CMG) with meta concepts for video captioning. Specifically, to cover the useful semantic concepts in video captions, we weakly learn the corresponding visual regions for text descriptions, where the associated visual regions and textual words are named cross-modal meta concepts. We further build meta concept graphs dynamically with the learned cross-modal meta concepts. We also construct holistic video-level and local frame-level video graphs with the predicted predicates to model video sequence structures. We validate the efficacy of our proposed techniques with extensive experiments and achieve state-of-the-art results on two public datasets. Hao Wang 0094, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. | 2022 | Cross-Modal Food Retrieval: Learning a Joint Embedding of Food Images and Recipes With Semantic Consistency and Attention MechanismabstractFood retrieval is an important task to perform analysis of food-related information, where we are interested in retrieving relevant information about the queried food item such as ingredients, cooking instructions, etc. In this paper, we investigate cross-modal retrieval between food images and cooking recipes. The goal is to learn an embedding of images and recipes in a common feature space, such that the corresponding image-recipe embeddings lie close to one another. Two major challenges in addressing this problem are 1) large intra-variance and small inter-variance across cross-modal food data; and 2) difficulties in obtaining discriminative recipe representations. To address these two problems, we propose Semantic-Consistent and Attention-based Networks (SCAN), which regularize the embeddings of the two modalities through aligning output semantic probabilities. Besides, we exploit a self-attention mechanism to improve the embedding of recipes. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method on the large-scale Recipe1M dataset, and show that we can outperform several state-of-the-art cross-modal retrieval strategies for food images and cooking recipes by a significant margin. | 2021 | Cycle-Consistent Inverse GAN for Text-to-Image SynthesisabstractThis paper investigates an open research task of text-to-image synthesis for automatically generating or manipulating images from text descriptions. Prevailing methods mainly take the textual descriptions as the conditional input for the GAN generation, and need to train different models for the text-guided image generation and manipulation tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel unified framework of Cycle-consistent Inverse GAN (CI-GAN) for both text-to-image generation and text-guided image manipulation tasks. Specifically, we first train a GAN model without text input, aiming to generate images with high diversity and quality. Then we learn a GAN inversion model to convert the images back to the GAN latent space and obtain the inverted latent codes for each image, where we introduce the cycle-consistency training to learn more robust and consistent inverted latent codes. We further uncover the semantics of the latent space of the trained GAN model, by learning a similarity model between text representations and the latent codes. In the text-guided optimization module, we can generate images with the desired semantic attributes through optimization on the inverted latent codes. Extensive experiments on the Recipe1M and CUB datasets validate the efficacy of our proposed framework. Hao Wang 0094, Guosheng Lin, Steven C. H. Hoi, Chunyan Miao

SpSequenceNet: Semantic Segmentation Network on 4D Point CloudsabstractPoint clouds are useful in many applications like autonomous driving and robotics as they provide natural 3D information of the surrounding environments. While there are extensive research on 3D point clouds, scene understanding on 4D point clouds, a series of consecutive 3D point clouds frames, is an emerging topic and yet under-investigated. With 4D point clouds (3D point cloud videos), robotic systems could enhance their robustness by leveraging the temporal information from previous frames. However, the existing semantic segmentation methods on 4D point clouds suffer from low precision due to the spatial and temporal information loss in their network structures. In this paper, we propose SpSequenceNet to address this problem. The network is designed based on 3D sparse convolution. And we introduce two novel modules, a cross-frame global attention module and a cross-frame local interpolation module, to capture spatial and temporal information in 4D point clouds. We conduct extensive experiments on SemanticKITTI, and achieve the state-of-the-art result of 43.1% on mIoU, which is 1.5% higher than the previous best approach. | 2019 | Learning Cross-Modal Embeddings With Adversarial Networks for Cooking Recipes and Food ImagesabstractFood computing is playing an increasingly important role in human daily life, and has found tremendous applications in guiding human behavior towards smart food consumption and healthy lifestyle. An important task under the food-computing umbrella is retrieval, which is particularly helpful for health related applications, where we are interested in retrieving important information about food (e.g., ingredients, nutrition, etc.). In this paper, we investigate an open research task of cross-modal retrieval between cooking recipes and food images, and propose a novel framework Adversarial Cross-Modal Embedding (ACME) to resolve the cross-modal retrieval task in food domains. Specifically, the goal is to learn a common embedding feature space between the two modalities, in which our approach consists of several novel ideas: (i) learning by using a new triplet loss scheme together with an effective sampling strategy, (ii) imposing modality alignment using an adversarial learning strategy, and (iii) imposing cross-modal translation consistency such that the embedding of one modality is able to recover some important information of corresponding instances in the other modality. ACME achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the benchmark Recipe1M dataset, validating the efficacy of the proposed technique. Hao Wang 0094, Doyen Sahoo, Ee-Peng Lim, Steven C. H. Hoi

| 2019 | FoodAI: Food Image Recognition via Deep Learning for Smart Food LoggingabstractAn important aspect of health monitoring is effective logging of food consumption. This can help management of diet-related diseases like obesity, diabetes, and even cardiovascular diseases. Moreover, food logging can help fitness enthusiasts, and people who wanting to achieve a target weight. However, food-logging is cumbersome, and requires not only taking additional effort to note down the food item consumed regularly, but also sufficient knowledge of the food item consumed (which is difficult due to the availability of a wide variety of cuisines). With increasing reliance on smart devices, we exploit the convenience offered through the use of smart phones and propose a smart-food logging system: FoodAI, which offers state-of-the-art deep-learning based image recognition capabilities. FoodAI has been developed in Singapore and is particularly focused on food items commonly consumed in Singapore.
