2025 Exploring Timeline Control for Facial Motion Generation
abstract
This paper introduces a new control signal for facial motion generation: timeline control. Compared to audio and text signals, timelines provide more fine-grained control, such as generating specific facial motions with precise timing. Users can specify a multi-track timeline of facial actions arranged in temporal intervals, allowing precise control over the timing of each action. To model the timeline control capability, We first annotate the time intervals of facial actions in natural facial motion sequences at a frame-level granularity. This process is facilitated by Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-based Clustering to minimize human labor. Based on the annotations, we propose a diffusion-based generation model capable of generating facial motions that are natural and accurately aligned with input timelines. Our method supports text-guided motion generation by using ChatGPT to convert text into timelines. Experimental results show that our method can annotate facial action intervals with satisfactory accuracy, and produces natural facial motions accurately aligned with timelines.

2025 Controllable and Expressive One-Shot Video Head Swapping
abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel diffusion-based multi-condition controllable framework for video head swapping, which seamlessly transplant a human head from a static image into a dynamic video, while preserving the original body and background of target video, and further allowing to tweak head expressions and movements during swapping as needed. Existing face-swapping methods mainly focus on localized facial replacement neglecting holistic head morphology, while head-swapping approaches struggling with hairstyle diversity and complex backgrounds, and none of these methods allow users to modify the transplanted head expressions after swapping. To tackle these challenges, our method incorporates several innovative strategies through a unified latent diffusion paradigm. 1) Identity-preserving context fusion: We propose a shape-agnostic mask strategy to explicitly disentangle foreground head identity features from background/body contexts, combining hair enhancement strategy to achieve robust holistic head identity preservation across diverse hair types and complex backgrounds. 2) Expression-aware landmark retargeting and editing: We propose a disentangled 3DMM-driven retargeting module that decouples identity, expression, and head poses, minimizing the impact of original expressions in input images and supporting expression editing. While a scale-aware retargeting strategy is further employed to minimize cross-identity expression distortion for higher transfer precision. Experimental results demonstrate that our method excels in seamless background integration while preserving the identity of the source portrait, as well as showcasing superior expression transfer capabilities applicable to both real and virtual characters.

2025 OmniTalker: One-shot Real-time Text-Driven Talking Audio-Video Generation With Multimodal Style Mimicking
abstract
Although significant progress has been made in audio-driven talking head generation, text-driven methods remain underexplored. In this work, we present OmniTalker, a unified framework that jointly generates synchronized talking audio-video content from input text while emulating the target identity's speaking and facial movement styles, including speech characteristics, head motion, and facial dynamics. Our framework adopts a dual-branch diffusion transformer (DiT) architecture, with one branch dedicated to audio generation and the other to video synthesis. At the shallow layers, cross-modal fusion modules are introduced to integrate information between the two modalities. In deeper layers, each modality is processed independently, with the generated audio decoded by a vocoder and the video rendered using a GAN-based high-quality visual renderer. Leveraging DiT’s in-context learning capability through a masked-infilling strategy, our model can simultaneously capture both audio and visual styles without requiring explicit style extraction modules. Thanks to the efficiency of the DiT backbone and the optimized visual renderer, OmniTalker achieves real-time inference at 25 FPS. To the best of our knowledge, OmniTalker is the first one-shot framework capable of jointly modeling speech and facial styles in real time. Extensive experiments demonstrate its superiority over existing methods in terms of generation quality, particularly in preserving style consistency and ensuring precise audio-video synchronization, all while maintaining efficient inference.

2022 Text/Speech-Driven Full-Body Animation
abstract
Due to the increasing demand in films and games, synthesizing 3D avatar animation has attracted much attention recently. In this work, we present a production-ready text/speech-driven full-body animation synthesis system. Given the text and corresponding speech, our system synthesizes face and body animations simultaneously, which are then skinned and rendered to obtain a video stream output. We adopt a learning-based approach for synthesizing facial animation and a graph-based approach to animate the body, which generates high-quality avatar animation efficiently and robustly. Our results demonstrate the generated avatar animations are realistic, diverse and highly text/speech-correlated.

2022 Unsupervised Visual-Textual Correlation Learning With Fine-Grained Semantic Alignment
abstract
With the rapid growth of multimedia data on the Internet, there has been a rapid rise in the demand for visual-textual cross-media retrieval between images and sentences. However, the heterogeneous property of visual and textual data brings huge challenges to measure the cross-media similarity for retrieval. Although existing methods have achieved great progress with the strong learning ability of the deep neural network, they rely heavily on the scale of training data with manual annotation, that is, either pairwise image-sentence annotation or category annotation as supervised information for visual-textual correlation learning, which are extremely labor and time consuming to collect. Without any pairwise or category annotation, it is highly challenging to construct a correlation between images and sentences due to their inconsistent distributions and representations. But people can naturally understand the correlation between visual and textual data in high-level semantic, and those images and sentences containing the same group of semantic concepts can be easily matched in human brain. Inspired by the above human cognitive process, this article proposes an unsupervised visual-textual correlation learning (UVCL) approach to construct correlations without any manual annotation. The contributions are summarized as follows: 1) unsupervised semantic-guided cross-media correlation mining is proposed to bridge the heterogeneous gap between visual and textual data. We measure the semantic matching degree between images and sentences, and generate descriptive sentences according to the concepts extracted from images to further augment the training data in an unsupervised manner. Therefore, the approach can exploit the semantic knowledge within both visual and textual data to reduce the gap between them for further correlation learning and 2) unsupervised visual-textual fine-grained semantic alignment is proposed to learn cross-media correlation by aligning the fine-grained visual local patches and textual keywords with fine-grained soft attention as well as semantic-guided hard attention, and the results can effectively highlight the fine-grained semantic information within both images and sentences to boost visual-textual alignment. Extensive experiments are conducted to perform visual-textual cross-media retrieval in unsupervised setting without any manual annotation on two widely used datasets, namely, Flickr-30K and MS-COCO, which verify the effectiveness of our proposed UVCL approach.

2021 Text-driven 3D Avatar Animation with Emotional and Expressive Behaviors
abstract
Text-driven 3D avatar animation has been an essential part of virtual human techniques, which has a wide range of applications in movie, digital games and video streaming. In this work, we introduce a practical system which drives both facial and body movements of 3D avatar by text input. Our proposed system first converts text input to speech signal and conducts text analysis to extract semantic tags simultaneously. Then we generate the lip movements from the synthetic speech, and meanwhile facial expression and body movement are generated by the joint modeling of speech and textual information, which can drive our virtual 3D avatar talking and acting like a real human.

2021 A Virtual Character Generation and Animation System for E-Commerce Live Streaming
abstract
Virtual character has been widely adopted in many areas, such as virtual assistant, virtual customer service, robotics and etc. In this paper, we focus on its application in e-commerce live streaming. Particularly, we propose a virtual character generation and animation system that supports e-commerce live streaming with virtual characters as anchors. The system offers a virtual character face generation tool based on a weakly supervised 3D face reconstruction method. The method takes a single photo as input and generates a 3D face model with both similarity and aesthetics considered. It does not require 3D face annotation data due to the assist of differentiable neural rendering technique which seamlessly integrates rendering into a deep learning based 3D face reconstruction framework. Moreover, the system provides two animation approaches which support two different ways of live stream respectively. The first approach is based on real-time motion capture. An actor's performance is captured in real-time via a monocular camera, and then utilized for animating a virtual anchor. The second approach is text driven animation, in which the human-like animation is automatically generated based on a text script. The relationship between text script and animation is learned based on the training data which can be accumulated via the motion capture based animation. To our best knowledge, the presented work is the first sophisticated virtual character generation and animation system that is designed for e-commerce live streaming and actually deployed on an online shopping platform with millions of daily audiences.

2020 Reinforced Cross-Media Correlation Learning by Context-Aware Bidirectional Translation
abstract
The heterogeneity gap leads to inconsistent distributions and representations between image and text, which rises a challenging task to measure their similarities and construct cross-media correlation between them. The existing works mainly model the cross-media correlation in a common subspace, which causes insufficient correlation modeling in such third-party subspace with intermediate unidirectional transformation. Inspired by the recent advances of neural machine translation, which aims to establish a corresponding relationship between two entirely different languages, we can naturally discover that it has striking common characteristic with cross-media correlation learning to consider image and text as bilingual pairs, where the image is treated as a special kind of language to provide visual description, so that bidirectional transformation can be conducted between image and text to effectively explore cross-media correlation in the feature space of each media type. Thus, we propose a reinforced cross-media bidirectional translation (RCBT) approach to model the correlation between visual and textual descriptions. First, cross-media bidirectional translation mechanism is proposed to conduct direct transformation between the bilingual pairs of visual and textual descriptions bidirectionally, where the cross-media correlation can be effectively captured in both feature spaces of image and text through bidirectional translation training. Second, cross-media context-aware network with residual attention is proposed to exploit the rich spatial and temporal context hints with cross-media convolutional recurrent neural network, which can lead to more precise correlation learning for promoting bidirectional translation process. Third, cross-media reinforcement learning is proposed to perform a two-agent communication game played as a round between image and text to boost the bidirectional translation process, and we further extract inter-media and intra-media reward signals to provide complementary clues for learning cross-media correlation. Extensive experiments are conducted on cross-media retrieval to verify the effectiveness of our proposed RCBT approach, compared with 11 state-of-the-art methods on three cross-media datasets.

2020 Quintuple-Media Joint Correlation Learning With Deep Compression and Regularization
abstract
Multi-media data including image, video, text, audio, and 3D model, has been fast emerging on the Internet. Jointly correlating the data of various media types is a challenging task. With the considerable learning ability of deep network, existing works mainly construct multi-pathway network to learn cross-media correlation, where each pathway is for one media type. However, with number of media types increasing, existing methods face the problems of high repetition and complexity, leading to overfitting and poor generalization ability, which makes adverse effect on correlation learning. For addressing the above issues, we propose cross-media deep compression and regularization (CDCR) approach for quintuple-media joint correlation learning: 1) cross-media partial weight-sharing networks is proposed, where a part of parameters are commonly shared among multiple pathways, to exploit common characteristics across different media types for capturing intrinsic cross-media correlation; 2) we propose media-adaptive network pruning to drop connections between weakly-correlated neurons, which can emphasize media-specific characteristics adaptively; and 3) cross-media network regularization is proposed to utilize relationships among quintuple-media data, which can guarantee generalization ability and enhance intra-media and inter-media correlation. The experiments verify the effectiveness of our approach, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on two very challenging datasets, including a large-scale dataset PKU XMediaNet with more than 100 000 quintuple-media instances.

2020 MAVA: Multi-Level Adaptive Visual-Textual Alignment by Cross-Media Bi-Attention Mechanism
abstract
The rapidly developing information technology leads to a fast growth of visual and textual contents, and it comes with huge challenges to make correlation and perform crossmedia retrieval between images and sentences. Existing methods mainly explore cross-media correlation from either global-level instances as the whole images and sentences, or local-level fine-grained patches as the discriminative image regions and key words, which ignore the complementary information from the relation between local-level fine-grained patches. Naturally, relation understanding is highly important for learning crossmedia correlation. People focus on not only the alignment between discriminative image regions and key words, but also their relations lying in the visual and textual context. Therefore, in this paper, we propose Multi-level Adaptive Visual-textual Alignment (MAVA) approach with the following contributions. First, we propose cross-media multi-pathway fine-grained network to extract not only the local fine-grained patches as discriminative image regions and key words, but also visual relations between image regions as well as textual relations from the context of sentences, which contain complementary information to exploit fine-grained characteristics within different media types. Second, we propose visual-textual bi-attention mechanism to distinguish the fine-grained information with different saliency from both local and relation levels, which can provide more discriminative hints for correlation learning. Third, we propose cross-media multi-level adaptive alignment to explore global, local and relation alignments. An adaptive alignment strategy is further proposed to enhance the matched pairs of different media types, and discard those misalignments adaptively to learn more precise cross-media correlation. Extensive experiments are conducted to perform image-sentence matching on 2 widely-used cross-media datasets, namely Flickr-30K and MS-COCO, comparing with 10 state-of-the-art methods, which can fully verify the effectiveness of our proposed MAVA approach.

2019 Show and Tell in the Loop: Cross-Modal Circular Correlation Learning
abstract
Multimedia data with various modalities, such as image and text, are huge in quantity but have inconsistent distribution and representation. Many works have been done to break the boundary between image and text to measure their correlation. However, they focus on either the transformation to common subspace or the unidirectional generation from one to another individually, which cannot fully explore their interactions. It is noted that the bidirectional generation between image and text not only can provide complementary hints and mutually boost to learn cross-modal correlation but also cross-modal correlation learning can feed back to give comprehensive clues for promoting the cross-modal generation process. Therefore, we have the motivation that information transmission between image and text should be treated as a circular process, which aims to fully understand their latent correlation, and further realize cross-modal generation to produce both realistic images and text descriptions in a unified framework. In this paper, we propose the cross-modal circular correlation learning approach to perform both cross-modal correlation learning and generation simultaneously through an efficient circular learning training procedure. First, we propose the cross-modal circular learning model to perform an image-to-text caption and text-to-image synthesis circularly and learn common representation as a round-trip bridge, which can realize efficient interactions to fully exploit latent cross-modal correlations. Second, a unified bidirectional framework is proposed to conduct cross-modal mutual generation and is trained in an efficient circular process to enhance the generative ability of common representation, which can feed back circularly to further promote cross-modal correlation learning. In summary, we simultaneously perform cross-modal retrieval, image-to-text caption, and text-to-image synthesis in a unified framework with the circular learning process, which has high scalability and generality to realize universal cognition on the cross-modal data. We conduct extensive experiments to not only evaluate the correlation performance by cross-modal retrieval but also to show the generation effectiveness of both image caption and synthesis on the MS-COCO dataset.

2019 CM-GANs: Cross-modal Generative Adversarial Networks for Common Representation Learning
abstract
It is known that the inconsistent distributions and representations of different modalities, such as image and text, cause the heterogeneity gap, which makes it very challenging to correlate heterogeneous data and measure their similarities. Recently, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have been proposed and have shown their strong ability to model data distribution and learn discriminative representation. It has also been shown that adversarial learning can be fully exploited to learn discriminative common representations for bridging the heterogeneity gap. Inspired by this, we aim to effectively correlate large-scale heterogeneous data of different modalities with the power of GANs to model cross-modal joint distribution. In this article, we propose Cross-modal Generative Adversarial Networks (CM-GANs) with the following contributions. First, a cross-modal GAN architecture is proposed to model joint distribution over the data of different modalities. The inter-modality and intra-modality correlation can be explored simultaneously in generative and discriminative models. Both compete with each other to promote cross-modal correlation learning. Second, the cross-modal convolutional autoencoders with weight-sharing constraint are proposed to form the generative model. They not only exploit the cross-modal correlation for learning the common representations but also preserve reconstruction information for capturing the semantic consistency within each modality. Third, a cross-modal adversarial training mechanism is proposed, which uses two kinds of discriminative models to simultaneously conduct intra-modality and inter-modality discrimination. They can mutually boost to make the generated common representations more discriminative by the adversarial training process. In summary, our proposed CM-GAN approach can use GANs to perform cross-modal common representation learning by which the heterogeneous data can be effectively correlated. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the performance of CM-GANs on cross-modal retrieval compared with 13 state-of-the-art methods on 4 cross-modal datasets.

2018 Cross-modal Bidirectional Translation via Reinforcement Learning
abstract
The inconsistent distribution and representation of image and text make it quite challenging to measure their similarity, and construct correlation between them. Inspired by neural machine translation to establish a corresponding relationship between two entirely different languages, we attempt to treat images as a special kind of language to provide visual descriptions, so that translation can be conduct between bilingual pair of image and text to effectively explore cross-modal correlation. Thus, we propose Cross-modal Bidirectional Translation (CBT) approach, and further explore the utilization of reinforcement learning to improve the translation process. First, a cross-modal translation mechanism is proposed, where image and text are treated as bilingual pairs, and cross-modal correlation can be effectively captured in both feature spaces of image and text by bidirectional translation training. 2018 Cross-media Multi-level Alignment with Relation Attention Network
abstract
With the rapid growth of multimedia data, such as image and text, it is a highly challenging problem to effectively correlate and retrieve the data of different media types. Naturally, when correlating an image with textual description, people focus on not only the alignment between discriminative image regions and key words, but also the relations lying in the visual and textual context. Relation understanding is essential for cross-media correlation learning, which is ignored by prior cross-media retrieval works. To address the above issue, we propose Cross-media Relation Attention Network (CRAN) with multi-level alignment. First, we propose visual-language relation attention model to explore both fine-grained patches and their relations of different media types. We aim to not only exploit cross-media fine-grained local information, but also capture the intrinsic relation information, which can provide complementary hints for correlation learning. Second, we propose cross-media multi-level alignment to explore global, local and relation alignments across different media types, which can mutually boost to learn more precise cross-media correlation. We conduct experiments on 2 cross-media datasets, and compare with 10 state-of-the-art methods to verify the effectiveness of proposed approach.

2018 Life-long Cross-media Correlation Learning
abstract
With the numerous and dynamically increasing of multimedia data, such as image and text, lying in different domains, there arise two major challenges for cross-media retrieval. First, measuring the similarities for cross-media correlation between different media types is quite difficult, due to their inconsistent distributions and representations. Second, storing and retraining on such data becomes infeasible, because data of new domain arrives in sequence while the existing ones are not always available. Thus, it requires to only utilize the data of new domain for training while preserving the original correlation capabilities simultaneously. To address the above issues, in this paper we propose Cross-media Life-long Learning (CmLL) approach, which can leverage the knowledge learned from the existing data, to obtain better correlation performance in new domain. The main contributions are summarized as follows: (1) Cross-media adapting network. We construct hierarchical network to not only share the knowledge from different media types in high level, but also realize life-long learning on new cross-media domain by expanding network capacity adaptively, which can support the adaptivity and extensibility for cross-media correlation learning. (2) Cross-media life-long learning. We propose both intra-domain distribution alignment as well as inter-domain knowledge distillation, which can not only effectively preserve the correlation ability in old cross-media domains, but also improve the performance in new domain by transferring knowledge among different domains. We conduct extensive experiments to verify the effectiveness of our proposed CmLL approach, which are performed on multiple cross-media datasets for different domains under lifelong learning scenarios.

2018 Modality-Specific Cross-Modal Similarity Measurement With Recurrent Attention Network
abstract
Nowadays, cross-modal retrieval plays an important role to flexibly find useful information across different modalities of data. Effectively measuring the similarity between different modalities of data is the key of cross-modal retrieval. Different modalities such as image and text have imbalanced and complementary relationship, and they contain unequal amount of information when describing the same semantics. For example, images often contain more details that cannot be demonstrated by textual descriptions and vice versa. Existing works based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) mostly construct one common space for different modalities, to find the latent alignments between them, which lose their exclusive modality-specific characteristics. Therefore, we propose modality-specific cross-modal similarity measurement (MCSM) approach by constructing the independent semantic space for each modality, which adopts an endto- end framework to directly generate modality-specific crossmodal similarity without explicit common representation. For each semantic space, modality-specific characteristics within one modality are fully exploited by recurrent attention network, while the data of another modality is projected into this space with attention based joint embedding, which utilizes the learned attention weights for guiding the fine-grained cross-modal correlation learning, and captures the imbalanced and complementary relationship between different modalities. Finally, the complementarity between the semantic spaces for different modalities is explored by adaptive fusion of the modality-specific cross-modal similarities to perform cross-modal retrieval. Experiments on the widely-used Wikipedia, Pascal Sentence, MS-COCO datasets as well as our constructed large-scale XMediaNet dataset verify the effectiveness of our proposed approach, outperforming 9 stateof- the-art methods.

2018 CCL: Cross-modal Correlation Learning With Multigrained Fusion by Hierarchical Network
abstract
Cross-modal retrieval has become a highlighted research topic for retrieval across multimedia data such as image and text. A two-stage learning framework is widely adopted by most existing methods based on deep neural network (DNN):The first learning stageis to generate separate representation for each modality andthe second learning stageis to get the cross-modal common representation. However the existing methods have three limitations: 1) Inthe first learning stagethey only model intramodality correlation but ignore intermodality correlation with rich complementary context. 2) Inthe second learning stagethey only adopt shallow networks with single-loss regularization but ignore the intrinsic relevance of intramodality and intermodality correlation. 3) Only original instances are considered while the complementary fine-grained clues provided by their patches are ignored. For addressing the above problems this paper proposes a cross-modal correlation learning (CCL) approach with multigrained fusion by hierarchical network and the contributions are as follows: 1) Inthe first learning stageCCL exploits multilevel association with joint optimization to preserve the complementary context from intramodality and intermodality correlation simultaneously. 2) Inthe second learning stagea multitask learning strategy is designed to adaptively balance the intramodality semantic category constraints and intermodality pairwise similarity constraints. 3) CCL adopts multigrained modeling which fuses the coarse-grained instances and fine-grained patches to make cross-modal correlation more precise. Comparing with 13 state-of-the-art methods on 6 widely-used cross-modal datasets the experimental results show our CCL approach achieves the best performance.
