| 2025 | Machine Learning for K-Adaptability in Two-Stage Robust OptimizationabstractTwo-stage robust optimization problems constitute one of the hardest optimization problem classes. One of the solution approaches to this class of problems is K-adaptability. This approach simultaneously seeks the best partitioning of the uncertainty set of scenarios into K subsets and optimizes decisions corresponding to each of these subsets. In a general case, it is solved using the K-adaptability branch-and-bound algorithm, which requires exploration of exponentially growing solution trees. To accelerate finding high-quality solutions in such trees, we propose a machine learning-based node selection strategy. In particular, we construct a feature engineering scheme based on general two-stage robust optimization insights, which allows us to train our machine learning tool on a database of resolved branch-and-bound trees and to apply it as is to problems of different sizes and/or types. We experimentally show that using our learned node selection strategy outperforms a vanilla, random node selection strategy when tested on problems of the same type as the training problems as well as in cases when the K-value or the problem size differs from the training ones. | 2025 | First-Order Algorithms for Robust Optimization Problems via Convex-Concave Saddle-Point Lagrangian ReformulationabstractRobust optimization (RO) is one of the key paradigms for solving optimization problems affected by uncertainty. Two principal approaches for RO, the robust counterpart method and the adversarial approach, potentially lead to excessively large optimization problems. For that reason, first-order approaches, based on online convex optimization, have been proposed as alternatives for the case of large-scale problems. However, existing first-order methods are either stochastic in nature or involve a binary search for the optimal value. We show that this problem can also be solved with deterministic first-order algorithms based on a saddle-point Lagrangian reformulation that avoids both of these issues. Our approach recovers the other approaches’ [Formula: see text] convergence rate in the general case and offers an improved [Formula: see text] rate for problems with constraints that are affine both in the decision and in the uncertainty. Experiment involving robust quadratic optimization demonstrates the numerical benefits of our approach. | 2022 | Hidden invariant convexity for global and conic-intersection optimality guarantees in discrete-time optimal controlabstractAbstract Non-convex discrete-time optimal control problems in, e.g., water or power systems, typically involve a large number of variables related through nonlinear equality constraints. The ideal goal is to find a globally optimal solution, and numerical experience indicates that algorithms aiming for Karush–Kuhn–Tucker points often find solutions that are indistinguishable from global optima. In our paper, we provide a theoretical underpinning for this phenomenon, showing that on a broad class of problems the objective can be shown to be an invariant convex function (invex function) of the control decision variables when state variables are eliminated using implicit function theory. In this way, optimality guarantees can be obtained, the exact nature of which depends on the position of the solution within the feasible set. In a numerical example, we show how high-quality solutions are obtained with local search for a river control problem where invexity holds. Jorn H. Baayen, Krzysztof Postek |

| 2021 | Piecewise Constant Decision Rules via Branch-and-Bound Based Scenario Detection for Integer Adjustable Robust OptimizationabstractMultistage problems with uncertain parameters and integer decisions variables are among the most difficult applications of robust optimization (RO). The challenge in these problems is to find optimal here-and-now decisions, taking into account that the wait-and-see decisions have to adapt to the revealed values of the uncertain parameters. An existing approach to solve these problems is to construct piecewise constant decision rules by adaptively partitioning the uncertainty set. The partitions of this set are iteratively updated by separating so-called criticial scenarios, and methods for identifying these critical scenarios are available. However, these methods are most suitable for problems with continuous decision variables and many uncertain constraints, providing no mathematically rigorous methodology for partitioning in case of integer decisions. In particular, they are not able to identify sets of critical scenarios for integer problems with uncertainty in the objective function only. In this paper, we address this shortcoming by introducing a general critical scenario detection method. The new method leverages the information embedded in the dual vectors of the LP relaxations at the nodes of the branch-and-bound tree used to solve the corresponding static problem. Numerical experiments on a route planning problem show that our general-purpose method outperforms a problem-specific approach from the literature. Ward Romeijnders, Krzysztof Postek |

| 2018 | Computing the Channel Capacity of a Communication System Affected by Uncertain Transition ProbabilitiesabstractWe study the problem of computing the capacity of a discrete memoryless channel under uncertainty affecting the channel law matrix, and possibly with a constraint on the average cost of the input distribution. The problem has been formulated in the literature as a max-min problem. We use the robust optimization methodology to convert the max-min problem to a standard convex optimization problem. For small-sized problems, and for many types of uncertainty, such a problem can be solved in principle using interior point methods (IPMs). However, for large-scale problems, IPMs are not practical. Here, we suggest an O(1/T) first-order algorithm based on [1] which is applied directly to the max-min problem. Krzysztof Postek, Aharon Ben-Tal |

| 2016 | Multistage Adjustable Robust Mixed-Integer Optimization via Iterative Splitting of the Uncertainty SetabstractIn this paper we propose a methodology for constructing decision rules for integer and continuous decision variables in multiperiod robust linear optimization problems. This type of problem finds application in, for example, inventory management, lot sizing, and manpower management. We show that by iteratively splitting the uncertainty set into subsets, one can differentiate the later-period decisions based on the revealed uncertain parameters. At the same time, the problem’s computational complexity stays at the same level, as for the static robust problem. This also holds in the nonfixed recourse situation. In the fixed recourse situation our approach can be combined with linear decision rules for the continuous decision variables. We provide theoretical results on splitting the uncertainty set by identifying sets of uncertain parameter scenarios to be divided for an improvement in the worst-case objective value. Based on this theory, we propose several splitting heuristics. Numerical examples entailing a capital budgeting and a lot sizing problem illustrate the advantages of the proposed approach.
