2025 VLMPlanner: Integrating Visual Language Models with Motion Planning
abstract
Integrating large language models (LLMs) into autonomous driving motion planning has recently emerged as a promising direction, offering enhanced interpretability, better controllability, and improved generalization in rare and long-tail scenarios. However, existing methods often rely on abstracted perception or map-based inputs, missing crucial visual context, such as fine-grained road cues, accident aftermath, or unexpected obstacles, which are essential for robust decision-making in complex driving environments. To bridge this gap, we propose VLMPlanner, a hybrid framework that combines a learning-based real-time planner with a vision-language model (VLM) capable of reasoning over raw images. The VLM processes multi-view images to capture rich, detailed visual information and leverages its common-sense reasoning capabilities to guide the real-time planner in generating robust and safe trajectories. Furthermore, we develop the Context-Adaptive Inference Gate (CAI-Gate) mechanism that enables the VLM to mimic human driving behavior by dynamically adjusting its inference frequency based on scene complexity, thereby achieving an optimal balance between planning performance and computational efficiency. We evaluate our approach on the large-scale, challenging nuPlan benchmark, with comprehensive experimental results demonstrating superior planning performance in scenarios with intricate road conditions and dynamic elements.

2025 LabUtopia: High-Fidelity Simulation and Hierarchical Benchmark for Scientific Embodied Agents
abstract
Scientific embodied agents play a crucial role in modern laboratories by automating complex experimental workflows.Compared to typical household environments, laboratory settings impose significantly higher demands on perception of physical-chemical transformations and long-horizon planning, making them an ideal testbed for advancing embodied intelligence. However, its development has been long hampered by the lack of suitable simulator and benchmarks. In this paper, we address this gap by introducing LabUtopia, a comprehensive simulation and benchmarking suite designed to facilitate the development of generalizable, reasoning-capable embodied agents in laboratory settings. Specifically, it integrates i) LabSim, a high-fidelity simulator supporting multi-physics and chemically meaningful interactions; ii) LabScene, a scalable procedural generator for diverse scientific scenes; and iii) LabBench, a hierarchical benchmark spanning five levels of complexity from atomic actions to long-horizon mobile manipulation. LabUtopia supports 30 distinct tasks and includes more than 200 scene and instrument assets, enabling large-scale training and principled evaluation in high-complexity environments. We demonstrate that LabUtopia offers a powerful platform for advancing the integration of perception, planning, and control in scientific-purpose agents and provides a rigorous testbed for exploring the practical capabilities and generalization limits of embodied intelligence in future research. 2025 PonderV2: Improved 3D Representation With a Universal Pre-Training Paradigm
abstract
In contrast to numerous NLP and 2D vision foundational models, training a 3D foundational model poses considerably greater challenges. This is primarily due to the inherent data variability and diversity of downstream tasks. In this paper, we introduce a novel universal 3D pre-training framework designed to facilitate the acquisition of efficient 3D representations. Considering that informative 3D features should encode rich geometry and appearance cues that can be utilized to render realistic images, we propose to learn 3D representations by differentiable neural rendering. We train a 3D backbone with a volumetric neural renderer by comparing the rendered with the real images. Notably, our pre-trained encoder can be seamlessly applied to various downstream tasks. These tasks include semantic challenges like 3D detection and segmentation, which involve scene understanding, and non-semantic tasks like 3D reconstruction and image synthesis, which focus on geometry and visuals. They span both indoor and outdoor scenarios. We also illustrate the capability of pre-training a 2D backbone using the proposed methodology, surpassing conventional pre-training methods by a large margin. For the first time, PonderV2 achieves state-of-the-art performance on 11 indoor and outdoor benchmarks, implying its effectiveness.

2024 UniPAD: A Universal Pre-Training Paradigm for Autonomous Driving
abstract
In the context of autonomous driving, the significance of effective feature learning is widely acknowledged. While conventional 3D self-supervised pretraining methods have shown widespread success, most methods follow the ideas originally designed for 2D images. In this paper, we present UniPAD, a novel self-supervised learning paradigm applying 3D volumetric differentiable rendering. UniPAD implicitly encodes 3D space, facilitating the reconstruction of continuous 3D shape structures and the intricate appear-ance characteristics of their 2D projections. The flexibil-ity of our method enables seamless integration into both 2D and 3D frameworks, enabling a more holistic compre-hension of the scenes. We manifest the feasibility and effectiveness of UniPAD by conducting extensive experiments on various 3D perception tasks. Our method significantly improves lidar-, camera-, and lidar-camera-based baseline by 9.1, 7.7, and 6.9 NDS, respectively. Notably, our pretraining pipeline achieves 73.2 NDS for 3D object detection and 79.4 mIoU for 3D semantic segmentation on the nuScenes validation set, achieving state-of-the-art results in comparison with previous methods.

2023 TrajMatch: Toward Automatic Spatio-Temporal Calibration for Roadside LiDARs Through Trajectory Matching
abstract
Recently, deploying sensors such as LiDARs on the roadside to monitor the passing traffic and assist autonomous vehicle perception has become popular. However, unlike autonomous vehicle systems, roadside sensor systems involve sensors from different subsystems, resulting in a lack of synchronization in both time and space between the sensors. Calibration is a critical technology that enables the central server to fuse data generated by different location infrastructures, which vastly improves sensing range and detection robustness. Regrettably, existing calibration algorithms frequently assume that LiDARs have significant overlap or that temporal calibration has already been achieved. However, since these assumptions do not always hold in real-world scenarios, the calibration results obtained from existing algorithms are frequently unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose TrajMatch - the first system that can automatically calibrate roadside LiDARs in both time and space. The main idea is to automatically calibrate the sensors based on the result of the detection/tracking task, rather than relying on extracting special features. Furthermore, we propose a novel mechanism for evaluating calibration parameters that align with our algorithm, and we demonstrate its effectiveness through experiments. This mechanism can also guide parameter iterations for multiple calibrations, further enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of our calibration method. Finally, to evaluate the performance of TrajMatch, we collected two datasets, one simulated dataset LiDARnet-sim 1.0 and one real-world dataset. The experimental results show that TrajMatch can achieve a spatial calibration error of less than$10cm$and a temporal calibration error of less than$1.5ms$.
