2025 Exploring Timeline Control for Facial Motion Generation
abstract
This paper introduces a new control signal for facial motion generation: timeline control. Compared to audio and text signals, timelines provide more fine-grained control, such as generating specific facial motions with precise timing. Users can specify a multi-track timeline of facial actions arranged in temporal intervals, allowing precise control over the timing of each action. To model the timeline control capability, We first annotate the time intervals of facial actions in natural facial motion sequences at a frame-level granularity. This process is facilitated by Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-based Clustering to minimize human labor. Based on the annotations, we propose a diffusion-based generation model capable of generating facial motions that are natural and accurately aligned with input timelines. Our method supports text-guided motion generation by using ChatGPT to convert text into timelines. Experimental results show that our method can annotate facial action intervals with satisfactory accuracy, and produces natural facial motions accurately aligned with timelines.

2025 Controllable and Expressive One-Shot Video Head Swapping
abstract
In this paper, we propose a novel diffusion-based multi-condition controllable framework for video head swapping, which seamlessly transplant a human head from a static image into a dynamic video, while preserving the original body and background of target video, and further allowing to tweak head expressions and movements during swapping as needed. Existing face-swapping methods mainly focus on localized facial replacement neglecting holistic head morphology, while head-swapping approaches struggling with hairstyle diversity and complex backgrounds, and none of these methods allow users to modify the transplanted head expressions after swapping. To tackle these challenges, our method incorporates several innovative strategies through a unified latent diffusion paradigm. 1) Identity-preserving context fusion: We propose a shape-agnostic mask strategy to explicitly disentangle foreground head identity features from background/body contexts, combining hair enhancement strategy to achieve robust holistic head identity preservation across diverse hair types and complex backgrounds. 2) Expression-aware landmark retargeting and editing: We propose a disentangled 3DMM-driven retargeting module that decouples identity, expression, and head poses, minimizing the impact of original expressions in input images and supporting expression editing. While a scale-aware retargeting strategy is further employed to minimize cross-identity expression distortion for higher transfer precision. Experimental results demonstrate that our method excels in seamless background integration while preserving the identity of the source portrait, as well as showcasing superior expression transfer capabilities applicable to both real and virtual characters.

2024 On-Demand Earth System Data Cubes
abstract
Advancements in Earth system science have seen a surge in diverse datasets. Earth System Data Cubes (ESDCs) have been introduced to efficiently handle this influx of high-dimensional data. ESDCs offer a structured, intuitive framework for data analysis, organising information within spatio-temporal grids. The structured nature of ESDCs unlocks significant opportunities for Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. By providing well-organised data, ESDCs are ideally suited for a wide range of sophisticated AI-driven tasks. An automated framework for creating AI-focused ESDCs with minimal user input could significantly accelerate the generation of task-specific training data. Here we introduce cubo, an open-source Python tool designed for easy generation of AI-focused ESDCs. Utilising collections in SpatioTemporal Asset Catalogs (STAC) that are stored as Cloud Optimised GeoTIFFs (COGs), cubo efficiently creates ESDCs, requiring only central coordinates, spatial resolution, edge size, and time range.

2022 Sampling Robustness in Gradient Analysis of Urban Material Mixtures
abstract
Many studies analyzing spaceborne hyperspectral images (HSIs) have so far struggled to deal with a lack of pure pixels due to complex mixtures of urban surface materials. Recently, an alternative concept of gradients in urban surface material composition has been proposed and successfully applied to map cities with spaceborne HSIs without the requirement for a previous determination of pure pixels. The gradient concept treats all pixels as mixed and aims to describe and quantify gradual transitions in the cover fractions of surface materials. This concept presents a promising approach to tackle urban mapping using spaceborne HSIs. However, since gradients are determined in a data-driven way, their transferability within urban areas needs to be investigated. For this purpose, we analyze the robustness of urban surface material gradients and their dependence across six systematic and three simple random sampling schemes. The results show high similarity between nine sampling schemes in the primary gradient feature space (Pspace) and individual gradient feature spaces (Ispaces). Comparing the Pspace with the Ispaces, the Mantel statistics show the resemblance of samples' distribution in the Pspace, and each Ispace is rather strong with high credibility, as the significance level is P < 0.01. Therefore, it can be concluded that the material gradients defined in the test area are independent of the specific sampling scheme. This study paves the way for subsequent analysis of the stability of urban surface material gradients and the interpretation of material gradients in other urban environments.

2016 Evolution of temperature of a case-II water and an inland lake around the Weihai area, Shandong province between 1994 and 2014
abstract
The Weihai area in Shandong province has undergone intensive changes of the landscape over the past years. The city has expanded to a high percentage but is still characterized by a huge number of lakes and surrounding coastal waters (case-II). In the study, we investigated the temperature changes of those lakes and the coastal zones as well as of some features at land over the past 20 years. We were able to measure subtle changes and trends considering the background of global warming issues by 1.4 degree within this time span. First of all, advanced processing schemes are utilized to conduct the necessary geometric correction and radiometric calibration of the data. In a second step, data have to be converted from DN values to emittance and finally to temperature values. Data are analyzed, and results of temperature changes and trends of different lakes and coastal waters are displayed and visualized together with robust statistical data in digital form. Results are finally interpreted and may be compared to other data sources such as fixed measuring points on the ground or results at other regions eventually at different latitudes.

2016 Urbanization of Weihai area in Shandong province analyzed by archived Landsat data
abstract
Intensive transformation of landscape has taken place in Weihai, Shandong province. This gave us the idea to investigate the urban development in this area by the use of archived satellite data, available for the last 30 years. We utilized advanced processing schemes to geometrically correct and spectrally calibrate about 60 cloud free frames of Landsat data available from 1984 to 2015. We used different classifiers to extract and model relevant parameters and provide information layers that display the changes and trends incl. robust statistics for the area. These information layers are finally analyzed and interpreted. Our findings confirm a tremendous increase of housing and industrial areas of 6.56% locally and 10% for the entire Weihai area within the last 10 years and also indicate new investments as drivers for the urbanization.
