X-Dyna: Expressive Dynamic Human Image AnimationabstractWe introduce X-Dyna, a novel zero-shot, diffusion-based pipeline for animating a single human image using facial expressions and body movements derived from a driving video, that generates realistic, context-aware dynamics for both the subject and the surrounding environment. Building on prior approaches centered on human pose control, X-Dyna addresses key shortcomings causing the loss of dynamic details, enhancing the lifelike qualities of human video animations. At the core of our approach is the Dynamics-Adapter, a lightweight module that effectively integrates reference appearance context into the spatial attentions of the diffusion backbone while preserving the capacity of motion modules in synthesizing fluid and intricate dynamic details. Beyond body pose control, we connect a local control module with our model to capture identity-disentangled facial expressions, facilitating accurate expression transfer for enhanced realism in animated scenes. Together, these components form a unified framework capable of learning physical human motion and natural scene dynamics from a diverse blend of human and scene videos. Comprehensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations demonstrate that X-Dyna outperforms state-of- the-art methods, creating highly lifelike and expressive animations. | 2025 | X-Dancer: Expressive Music to Human Dance Video GenerationabstractWe present X-Dancer, a novel zero-shot music-driven image animation pipeline that creates diverse and long-range lifelike human dance videos from a single static image. As its core, we introduce a unified transformer-diffusion framework, featuring an autoregressive transformer model that synthesize extended and music-synchronized token sequences for 2D body, head and hands poses, which then guide a diffusion model to produce coherent and realistic dance video frames. Unlike traditional methods that primarily generate human motion in 3D, X-Dancer addresses data limitations and enhances scalability by modeling a wide spectrum of 2D dance motions, capturing their nuanced alignment with musical beats through readily available monocular videos. To achieve this, we first build a spatially compositional token representation from 2D human pose labels associated with keypoint confidences, encoding both large articulated body movements (e.g., upper and lower body) and fine-grained motions (e.g., head and hands). We then design a music-to-motion transformer model that autoregressively generates music-aligned dance pose token sequences, incorporating global attention to both musical style and prior motion context. Finally we leverage a diffusion backbone to animate the reference image with these synthesized pose tokens through AdaIN, forming a fully differentiable end-to-end framework. Experimental results demonstrate that X-Dancer is able to produce both diverse and characterized dance videos, substantially outperforming state-of-the-art methods in term of diversity, expressiveness and realism. Code and model will be available for research purposes. Guoxian Song, You Xie, Xin Chen 0040, Chao Wang 0088, Di Chang, Linjie Luo

X-NeMo: Expressive Neural Motion Reenactment via Disentangled Latent AttentionabstractWe propose X-NeMo, a novel zero-shot diffusion-based portrait animation pipeline that animates a static portrait using facial movements from a driving video of a different individual. Our work first identifies the root causes of the limitations in prior approaches, such as identity leakage and difficulty in capturing subtle and extreme expressions. To address these challenges, we introduce a fully end-to-end training framework that distills a 1D identity-agnostic latent motion descriptor from driving image, effectively controlling motion through cross-attention during image generation. Our implicit motion descriptor captures expressive facial motion in fine detail, learned end-to-end from a diverse video dataset without reliance on any pre-trained motion detectors. We further disentangle motion latents from identity cues with enhanced expressiveness by supervising their learning with a dual GAN decoder, alongside spatial and color augmentations. By embedding the driving motion into a 1D latent vector and controlling motion via cross-attention instead of additive spatial guidance, our design effectively eliminates the transmission of spatial-aligned structural clues from the driving condition to the diffusion backbone, substantially mitigating identity leakage. Extensive experiments demonstrate that X-NeMo surpasses state-of-the-art baselines, producing highly expressive animations with superior identity resemblance. Our code and models will be available for research. Xiaochen Zhao, Guoxian Song, You Xie, Xiu Li 0003, Linjie Luo, Jin-Li Suo, Yebin Liu

X-UniMotion: Animating Human Images with Expressive, Unified and Identity-Agnostic Motion LatentsabstractWe present X-UniMotion, a unified and expressive implicit latent representation for whole-body human motion, encompassing facial expressions, body poses, and hand gestures. Unlike prior motion transfer methods that rely on explicit skeletal poses and heuristic cross-identity adjustments, our approach encodes multi-granular human motion directly from a single image into a compact set of four disentangled latent tokens—one each for facial expression and body pose, and one per hand. These motion latents are both highly expressive and identity-agnostic, enabling high-fidelity, detailed cross-identity motion transfer across subjects with distinct identities, poses and spatial configurations. To achieve this, we introduce a self-supervised, end-to-end training framework that jointly learns the motion encoder and latent representation alongside a DiT-based video generative model, trained on large-scale video datasets spanning diverse human motions. Motion-identity disentanglement is enforced via 2D spatial and color augmentations, as well as synthetic 3D renderings of cross-identity subject pairs under shared poses. We further guide the learning of motion tokens using auxiliary decoders to promote fine-grained, semantically aligned, and normal-aware motion embeddings. Extensive experiments demonstrate that X-UniMotion outperforms state-of-the-art methods, producing highly expressive animations with superior motion expressiveness and identity preservation. | 2025 | X-Actor: Emotional and Expressive Long-Range Portrait Acting from AudioabstractWe present X-Actor, a novel audio-driven portrait animation framework that generates lifelike, emotionally expressive talking head videos from a single reference image and an input audio clip. Unlike prior methods that emphasize lip synchronization and short-range visual fidelity in constrained speaking scenarios, X-Actor enables actor-quality, long-form portrait performance—capturing nuanced, dynamically evolving emotions that flow coherently with the rhythm and content of speech. Central to our approach is a two-stage decoupled generation pipeline: an audio-conditioned autoregressive diffusion model that predicts expressive yet identity-agnostic facial motion latent tokens within a long temporal context window, followed by a diffusion-based video synthesis module that translates these motions into high-fidelity video animations. By operating in a compact facial motion latent space decoupled from visual and identity cues, our autoregressive diffusion model effectively captures long-range correlations between audio and facial dynamics through a diffusion-forcing training paradigm, enabling infinite-length emotionally-rich motion prediction without error accumulation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that X-Actor produces compelling, cinematic-style performances that go beyond standard talking head animations and achieves state-of-the-art results in long-range, audio-driven emotional portrait acting. | 2025 | MagicTalk: Implicit and Explicit Correlation Learning for Diffusion-Based Emotional Talking Face GenerationabstractGenerating emotional talking faces from a single portrait image remains a significant challenge. The simultaneous achievement of expressive emotional talking and accurate lip-sync is particularly difficult, as expressiveness is often compromised for lip-sync accuracy. Prevailing generative works usually struggle to juggle to generate subtle variations of emotional expression and lip-synchronized talking. To address these challenges, we suggest modeling the implicit and explicit correlations between audio and emotional talking faces with a unified framework. As human emotional expressions usually present subtle and implicit relations with speech audio, we propose incorporating audio and emotional style embeddings into the diffusion-based generation process, for realistic generation while concentrating on emotional expressions. We then propose lip-based explicit correlation learning to construct a strong mapping of audio to lip motions, assuring lip-audio synchronization. Furthermore, we deploy a video-to-video rendering module to transfer expressions and lip motions from a proxy 3D avatar to an arbitrary portrait. Both quantitatively and qualitatively, MagicTalk outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of expressiveness, lip-sync, and perceptual quality. | 2024 | DiffPortrait3D: Controllable Diffusion for Zero-Shot Portrait View SynthesisabstractWe present DiffPortrait3D, a conditional diffusion model that is capable of synthesizing 3D-consistent photo-realistic novel views from as few as a single in-the-wild portrait. Specifically, given a single RGB input, we aim to synthesize plausible but consistent facial details rendered from novel camera views with retained both identity and facial expression. In lieu of time-consuming optimization and fine-tuning, our zero-shot method generalizes well to arbitrary face portraits with unposed camera views, extreme facial expressions, and diverse artistic depictions. At its core, we leverage the generative prior of 2D diffusion models pre-trained on large-scale image datasets as our rendering backbone, while the denoising is guided with disentangled attentive control of appearance and camera pose. To achieve this, we first inject the appearance context from the reference image into the self-attention layers of the frozen UNets. The rendering view is then manipulated with a novel conditional control module that interprets the camera pose by watching a condition image of a crossed subject from the same view. Furthermore, we insert a trainable cross-view attention module to enhance view consistency, which is further strengthened with a novel 3D-aware noise generation process during inference. We demonstrate state-of-the-art results both qualitatively and quantitatively on our challenging in-the-wild and multi-view benchmarks. | 2024 | MagicPose: Realistic Human Poses and Facial Expressions Retargeting with Identity-aware DiffusionabstractIn this work, we propose MagicPose, a diffusion-based model for 2D human pose and facial expression retargeting. Specifically, given a reference image, we aim to generate a person’s new images by controlling the poses and facial expressions while keeping the identity unchanged. To this end, we propose a two-stage training strategy to disentangle human motions and appearance (e.g., facial expressions, skin tone, and dressing), consisting of (1) the pre-training of an appearance-control block and (2) learning appearance-disentangled pose control. Our novel design enables robust appearance control over generated human images, including body, facial attributes, and even background. By leveraging the prior knowledge of image diffusion models, MagicPose generalizes well to unseen human identities and complex poses without the need for additional fine-tuning. Moreover, the proposed model is easy to use and can be considered as a plug-in module/extension to Stable Diffusion. The project website is here. The code is available here. | 2024 | FG-Net: Facial Action Unit Detection with Generalizable Pyramidal FeaturesabstractAutomatic detection of facial Action Units (AUs) allows for objective facial expression analysis. Due to the high cost of AU labeling and the limited size of existing benchmarks, previous AU detection methods tend to overfit the dataset, resulting in a significant performance loss when evaluated across corpora. To address this problem, we propose FG-Net for generalizable facial action unit detection. Specifically, FG-Net extracts feature maps from a Style-GAN2 model pre-trained on a large and diverse face image dataset. Then, these features are used to detect AUs with a Pyramid CNN Interpreter, making the training efficient and capturing essential local features. The proposed FG-Net achieves a strong generalization ability for heatmap-based AU detection thanks to the generalizable and semantic-rich features extracted from the pre-trained generative model. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate within- and cross-corpus AU detection with the widely-used DISFA and BP4D datasets. Compared with the state-of-the-art, the proposed method achieves superior cross-domain performance while maintaining competitive within-domain performance. In addition, FG-Net is dataefficient and achieves competitive performance even when trained on 1000 samples. | 2024 | Bridging Global Context Interactions for High-Fidelity Pluralistic Image CompletionabstractWe introduce PICFormer, a novel framework for Pluralistic Image Completion using a transFormer based architecture, that achieves both high quality and diversity at a much faster inference speed. Our key contribution is to introduce a code-shared codebook learning using a restrictive CNN on small and non-overlapping receptive fields (RFs) for the local visible token representation. This results in a compact yet expressive discrete representation, facilitating efficient modeling of global visible context relations by the transformer. Unlike the prevailing autoregressive approaches, we proposed to sample all tokens simultaneously, leading to more than 100× faster inference speed. To enhance appearance consistency between visible and generated regions, we further propose a novel attention-aware layer (AAL), designed to better exploit distantly related high-frequency features. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the PICFormer efficiently learns semantically-rich discrete codes, resulting in significantly improved image quality. Moreover, our diverse image completion framework surpasses State-of-the-Art methods on multiple image completion datasets. | 2023 | PanoHead: Geometry-Aware 3D Full-Head Synthesis in 360°abstractSynthesis and reconstruction of 3D human head has gained increasing interests in computer vision and computer graphics recently. Existing state-of-the-art 3D generative adversarial networks (GANs) for 3D human head synthesis are either limited to near-frontal views or hard to preserve 3D consistency in large view angles. We propose PanoHead, the first 3D-aware generative model that enables high-quality view-consistent image synthesis of full heads in 360° with diverse appearance and detailed geometry using only in-the-wild unstructured images for training. At its core, we lift up the representation power of recent 3D GANs and bridge the data alignment gap when training from in-the-wild images with widely distributed views. Specifically, we propose a novel two-stage self-adaptive image alignment for robust 3D GAN training. We further introduce a tri-grid neural volume representation that effectively addresses front-face and back-head feature entanglement rooted in the widely-adopted tri-plane formulation. Our method instills prior knowledge of 2D image segmentation in adversarial learning of 3D neural scene structures, enabling compositable head synthesis in diverse backgrounds. Benefiting from these designs, our method significantly outperforms previous 3D GANs, generating high-quality 3D heads with accurate geometry and diverse appearances, even with long wavy and afro hairstyles, renderable from arbitrary poses. Furthermore, we show that our system can reconstruct full 3D heads from single input images for personalized realistic 3D avatars. Sizhe An, Yichun Shi, Guoxian Song, Ümit Y. Ogras, Linjie Luo

PAniC-3D: Stylized Single-view 3D Reconstruction from Portraits of Anime CharactersabstractWe propose PAniC-3D, a system to reconstruct stylized 3D character heads directly from illustrated (p)ortraits of (ani)me (c)haracters. Our anime-style domain poses unique challenges to single-view reconstruction; compared to natural images of human heads, character portrait illustrations have hair and accessories with more complex and diverse geometry, and are shaded with non-photorealistic contour lines. In addition, there is a lack of both 3D model and portrait illustration data suitable to train and evaluate this ambiguous stylized reconstruction task. Facing these challenges, our proposed PAniC-3D architecture crosses the illustration-to-3D domain gap with a line-filling model, and represents sophisticated geometries with a volumetric radiance field. We train our system with two large new datasets (11.2k Vroid 3D models, 1k Vtuber portrait illustrations), and evaluate on a novel AnimeRecon benchmark of illustration-to-3D pairs. PAniC-3D significantly outper-forms baseline methods, and provides data to establish the task of stylized reconstruction from portrait illustrations. | 2023 | OmniAvatar: Geometry-Guided Controllable 3D Head SynthesisabstractWe present OmniAvatar, a novel geometry-guided 3D head synthesis model trained from in-the-wild unstructured images that is capable of synthesizing diverse identity-preserved 3D heads with compelling dynamic details under full disentangled control over camera poses, facial expressions, head shapes, articulated neck and jaw poses. To achieve such high level of disentangled control, we first explicitly define a novel semantic signed distance function (SDF) around a head geometry (FLAME) conditioned on the control parameters. This semantic SDF allows us to build a differentiable volumetric correspondence map from the observation space to a disentangled canonical space from all the control parameters. We then leverage the 3D-aware GAN framework (EG3D) to synthesize detailed shape and appearance of 3D full heads in the canonical space, followed by a volume rendering step guided by the volumetric correspondence map to output into the observation space. To ensure the control accuracy on the synthesized head shapes and expressions, we introduce a geometry prior loss to conform to head SDF and a control loss to conform to the expression code. Further, we enhance the temporal realism with dynamic details conditioned upon varying expressions and joint poses. Our model can synthesize more preferable identity-preserved 3D heads with compelling dynamic details compared to the state-of-the-art methods both qualitatively and quantitatively. We also provide an ablation study to justify many of our system design choices. Guoxian Song, Zihang Jiang, Yichun Shi, Jing Liu 0001, Wan-Chun Ma, Jiashi Feng, Linjie Luo

GETAvatar: Generative Textured Meshes for Animatable Human AvatarsabstractWe study the problem of 3D-aware full-body human generation, aiming at creating animatable human avatars with high-quality textures and geometries. Generally, two challenges remain in this field: i) existing methods struggle to generate geometries with rich realistic details such as the wrinkles of garments; ii) they typically utilize volumetric radiance fields and neural renderers in the synthesis process, making high-resolution rendering non-trivial. To overcome these problems, we propose GETAvatar, a Generative model that directly generates Explicit Textured 3D meshes for animatable human Avatar, with photorealistic appearance and fine geometric details. Specifically, we first design an articulated 3D human representation with explicit surface modeling, and enrich the generated humans with realistic surface details by learning from the 2D normal maps of 3D scan data. Second, with the explicit mesh representation, we can use a rasterization-based renderer to perform surface rendering, allowing us to achieve high-resolution image generation efficiently. Extensive experiments demonstrate that GETAvatar achieves state-of-the-art performance on 3D-aware human generation both in appearance and geometry quality. Notably, GETAvatar can generate images at 5122resolution with 17FPS and 10242resolution with 14FPS, improving upon previous methods by 2×. Our code and models will be at https://getavatar.github.io/. | 2022 | Real-time Shadow-aware Portrait Relighting in Virtual Backgrounds for Realistic TelepresenceabstractWhile using virtual backgrounds has recently become a very popular feature in videoconferencing, there often exists a jarring mismatch between the lighting of the user and the illumination condition of the virtual background. Existing portrait relighting methods can alleviate the problem, but do not have the capacity to deal with difficult shadow effects. In this paper, we present a new shadow-aware portrait relighting system that can relight an input portrait to be consistent with a given desired background image with shadow effects. Our system consists of four major components: portrait neutralization, illumination estimation, shadow generation and hierarchical neural rendering, which are all based on deep neural networks, and the whole system is end-to-end trainable. In addition, we created a large-scale photorealistic synthetic dataset with shadow, illumination and depth annotations for training, which allows our model to generalize well to real images. The extensive experiments demonstrate that our shadow-aware relight system outperforms the state-of-the-art portrait relighting solutions in terms of producing more lighting-consistent relighted images with shadow effects. | 2022 | AgileAvatar: Stylized 3D Avatar Creation via Cascaded Domain BridgingabstractStylized 3D avatars have become increasingly prominent in our modern life. Creating these avatars manually usually involves laborious selection and adjustment of continuous and discrete parameters and is time-consuming for average users. Self-supervised approaches to automatically create 3D avatars from user selfies promise high quality with little annotation cost but fall short in application to stylized avatars due to a large style domain gap. We propose a novel self-supervised learning framework to create high-quality stylized 3D avatars with a mix of continuous and discrete parameters. Our cascaded domain bridging framework first leverages a modified portrait stylization approach to translate input selfies into stylized avatar renderings as the targets for desired 3D avatars. Next, we find the best parameters of the avatars to match the stylized avatar renderings through a differentiable imitator we train to mimic the avatar graphics engine. To ensure we can effectively optimize the discrete parameters, we adopt a cascaded relaxation-and-search pipeline. We use a human preference study to evaluate how well our method preserves user identity compared to previous work as well as manual creation. Our results achieve much higher preference scores than previous work and close to those of manual creation. We also provide an ablation study to justify the design choices in our pipeline. | 2021 | Half-body Portrait Relighting with Overcomplete Lighting RepresentationabstractAbstract We present a neural‐based model for relighting a half‐body portrait image by simply referring to another portrait image with the desired lighting condition. Rather than following classical inverse rendering methodology that involves estimating normals, albedo and environment maps, we implicitly encode the subject and lighting in a latent space, and use these latent codes to generate relighted images by neural rendering. A key technical innovation is the use of a novel overcomplete lighting representation, which facilitates lighting interpolation in the latent space, as well as helping regularize the self‐organization of the lighting latent space during training. In addition, we propose a novel multiplicative neural render that more effectively combines the subject and lighting latent codes for rendering. We also created a large‐scale photorealistic rendered relighting dataset for training, which allows our model to generalize well to real images. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our system not only outperforms existing methods for referral‐based portrait relighting, but also has the capability generate sequences of relighted images via lighting rotations. | 2021 | AgileGAN: stylizing portraits by inversion-consistent transfer learningabstractPortraiture as an art form has evolved from realistic depiction into a plethora of creative styles. While substantial progress has been made in automated stylization, generating high quality stylistic portraits is still a challenge, and even the recent popular Toonify suffers from several artifacts when used on real input images. Such StyleGAN-based methods have focused on finding the best latent inversion mapping for reconstructing input images; however, our key insight is that this does not lead to good generalization to different portrait styles. Hence we propose AgileGAN, a framework that can generate high quality stylistic portraits via inversion-consistent transfer learning. We introduce a novel hierarchical variational autoencoder to ensure the inverse mapped distribution conforms to the original latent Gaussian distribution, while augmenting the original space to a multi-resolution latent space so as to better encode different levels of detail. To better capture attribute-dependent stylization of facial features, we also present an attribute-aware generator and adopt an early stopping strategy to avoid overfitting small training datasets. Our approach provides greater agility in creating high quality and high resolution (1024×1024) portrait stylization models, requiring only a limited number of style exemplars (~100) and short training time (~1 hour). We collected several style datasets for evaluation including 3D cartoons, comics, oil paintings and celebrities. We show that we can achieve superior portrait stylization quality to previous state-of-the-art methods, with comparisons done qualitatively, quantitatively and through a perceptual user study. We also demonstrate two applications of our method, image editing and motion retargeting. Guoxian Song, Linjie Luo, Wan-Chun Ma, Chun-Pong Lai, Chuanxia Zheng, Tat-Jen Cham

| 2018 | Real-time 3D Face-Eye Performance Capture of a Person Wearing VR HeadsetabstractTeleconference or telepresence based on virtual reality (VR) head-mount display (HMD) device is a very interesting and promising application since HMD can provide immersive feelings for users. However, in order to facilitate face-to-face communications for HMD users, real-time 3D facial performance capture of a person wearing HMD is needed, which is a very challenging task due to the large occlusion caused by HMD. The existing limited solutions are very complex either in setting or in approach as well as lacking the performance capture of 3D eye gaze movement. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN) based solution for real-time 3D face-eye performance capture of HMD users without complex modification to devices. To address the issue of lacking training data, we generate massive pairs of HMD face-label dataset by data synthesis as well as collecting VR-IR eye dataset from multiple subjects. Then, we train a dense-fitting network for facial region and an eye gaze network to regress 3D eye model parameters. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our system can efficiently and effectively produce in real time a vivid personalized 3D avatar with the correct identity, pose, expression and eye motion corresponding to the HMD user. | 2016 | FrameFab: robotic fabrication of frame shapesabstractFrame shapes, which are made of struts, have been widely used in many fields, such as art, sculpture, architecture, and geometric modeling, etc. An interest in robotic fabrication of frame shapes via spatial thermoplastic extrusion has been increasingly growing in recent years. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to generate a feasible fabrication sequence for general frame shapes. To solve this non-trivial combinatorial problem, we develop a divide-and-conquer strategy that first decomposes the input frame shape into stable layers via a constrained sparse optimization model. Then we search a feasible sequence for each layer via a local optimization method together with a backtracking strategy. The generated sequence guarantees that the already-printed part is in a stable equilibrium state at all stages of fabrication, and that the 3D printing extrusion head does not collide with the printed part during the fabrication. Our algorithm has been validated by a built prototype robotic fabrication system made by a 6-axis KUKA robotic arm with a customized extrusion head.
