Security considerations for the procurement and acquisition of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systemsabstractProcurement is a critical step in the setup of systems, as reverting decisions made at this point is typically time-consuming and costly. Especially Artificial Intelligence (AI) based systems face many challenges, starting with unclear and unknown side parameters at design time of the systems, changing ecosystems and regulations, as well as problems of overselling capabilities of systems by vendors. Furthermore, the AI Act puts forth a great deal of additional requirements for operators of critical AI systems, like risk management and transparency measures, thus making procurement even more complex. In addition, the number of providers of AI systems is drastically increasing. In this paper we provide guidelines for the procurement of AI based systems that support the decision maker in identifying the key elements for the procurement of secure AI systems, depending on the respective technical and regulatory environment. Furthermore, we provide additional resources for utilizing these guidelines in practical procurement. Peter Kieseberg, Christina Buttinger, Laura Kaltenbrunner, Marlies Temper, Simon Tjoa

An Open Source Code Analyzer and Reviewer (OSCAR) FrameworkabstractDue to the intense usage of IT and the growing number of fields of application, we rely more than ever on functional software components. In conjunction with this development it could be observed that in the last years the popularity of open source software was on the rise for various reasons. However, in the recent past, serious vulnerabilities have been discovered. In order to support open source developers testing their source code for security bugs, in this paper, we present the idea of a framework which combines existing open source security checkers. After presenting the architecture of the framework we demonstrate the functionality of the framework using the vulnerable application Web Goat. | 2015 | Contrology - An Ontology-Based Cloud Assurance ApproachabstractThe emerging trends towards mobility and big data analysis strongly contribute to the success of cloud computing. Despite the numerous advantages cloud computing still has not reached its full potential due to the privacy and security concerns of today's cloud service users. In order to improve trust on clouds, in this paper we propose a cloud ontology which supports assurance and security initiatives. Finally, we show how we implemented the introduced ontology using the widely used Protégé tool. Ulrich Koinig, Simon Tjoa, Jungwoo Ryoo

Keeping an Eye on Your Security Through Assurance IndicatorsabstractDespite the incommensurable effort made from across computer sciences disciplines to provide more secure systems, compromising the security of a system has now become a very common and stark reality for organizations of all sizes and from a variety of sectors. The lax in the technology has often been cited as the salient cause of systems insecurity. In this paper we advocate the need for a Security Assurance (SA) system to be embedded within current IT systems. Such a system has the potential to address one facet of cyber insecurity, which is the exploit of lax within the deployed security and its underlining policy. We discuss the challenges associated to such an SA assessment and present the flavor of its evaluation and monitoring through an initial prototype. By providing indicators on the status of a security matter that is more and more devolved to the provider as it is the case in the cloud, the SA tool can be used as a means of fostering better security transparency between a cloud provider and client. | 2013 | A Comprehensive Literature Review of File CarvingabstractFile carving is a recovery technique allowing file recovery without knowledge about contextual information such as file system metadata. Due to recent advancements in research, file carving has become an essential technique for both general data recovery and digital forensics investigations. During the last few years a considerable amount of publications has been published on the topic of file carving. Out of around 130 publications in this field we selected 70 key papers with major contributions to the topic in order to identify potential fields of future research activities. The first contribution of this paper is a survey on state-of-the-art literature supporting researchers and practitioners in gaining a comprehensive view on the progress in file carving research. In addition to that, the second major contribution of this paper is a (preliminary) file carving ontology. The purpose of the ontology presented within this paper is to push forward recovery approaches that are based on knowledge bases processible by computer systems. Rainer Poisel, Simon Tjoa

Game-based Simulation of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack and Defense Mechanisms of Critical InfrastructuresabstractThe outage of Critical Infrastructures (CI) can have devastating impacts on our society, economic welfare and political stability. One risk that is often encountered in critical infrastructure sectors is its high dependence on ICT components and the complex interdependencies between shared services. Recent cyber attacks (such as Stuxnet, Flame, Gauss) outline the high vulnerability of ICT components which build the foundation of today's Critical Infrastructures. The complexity and fast-changing threat environment pose an enormous challenge for estimating and forecasting the impacts of cyber attacks on such systems. In order to address this challenge, modeling and simulation techniques are used. Especially, Agent-based Modeling and Simulation provides a powerful technique to represent dynamic behavior of various actors. In this paper, we introduce a concept to model and simulate Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS) on critical infrastructures. For representing the interactions and the underlying decisions of the individual agents, we decided to combine Agent-based Modeling and Simulation with game-theoretic elements (such as Anticipation Games). In course of the paper we provide a short motivational example to outline how our approach can be applied in a real world scenario. Furthermore, the architecture of our research prototype is given. | 2011 | Roadmap to Approaches for Carving of Fragmented Multimedia FilesabstractFile carving is a recovery technique which does not consider file tables or other meta-data which is used to organize data on storage media. As files can be recovered based only on their content and/or structure this technique is an indispensable task during digital investigations. The main contribution of this paper is a survey about new approaches in the file carving research field and a roadmap that outlines the necessary steps towards video file carving. So far many approaches for the recovery of digital images have been proposed. After a short discussion of relevant representatives in this domain we focus on the applicability of these approaches to the recovery of multimedia files. Further this paper discusses ideas from the forensics wiki for their applicability to such a file carver. Finally our findings are summarized verbally and visually as a roadmap. | 2011 | A Formal Approach Enabling Risk-Aware Business Process Modeling and SimulationabstractThe effective, efficient and continuous execution of business processes is crucial for meeting entrepreneurial goals. Business process modeling and simulation are used to enable desired business process optimizations. However, current approaches mainly focus on economic aspects while security aspects are dealt with in separate initiatives. This missing interconnection may lead to significant differences in improvement suggestions, such as the differing valuation of security investments (e.g., redundancy of systems). The major contribution of this paper is the introduction of a formal model that is capable of expressing the relations between threats, detection mechanisms, safeguards, recovery measures and their effects on business processes. This novel business process simulation capability paves the way for the evaluation of security investments at process design stage by allowing the consideration of stochastic influences of the occurrence of threats on process activities and resources in a unified way. A stylized business case outlines how our method can be applied to real world scenarios. Simon Tjoa, Stefan Jakoubi, Gernot Goluch, Gerhard Kitzler, Sigrun Roat, Gerald Quirchmayr

A Formal Approach Towards Risk-Aware Service Level Analysis and PlanningabstractEffectively and efficiently performing business processes is a key success factor for achieving economic entrepreneurial goals. Amongst others, the argument of more stringent cost pressure lead companies to enforce outsourcing activities. Thus, the management of services - both, from the service requester and provider point of view - gained importance. However, considering only economic aspects is half the truth. One must not forget to simultaneously reflect risk aspects in an integrated way. Observing developments in the past years one can see that regulative bodies, the industry as well as the research community laid a special focus on the tighter integration of business process and risk management. In the course of this movement, we developed a conceptual method enabling risk-aware business process modeling and simulation. The major contribution of this paper is to introduce formal extensions of risk-aware business process management in order to support the related discipline of service management, especially risk-aware service analysis and planning. | 2010 | Planning Dynamic Activity and Resource Allocations Using a Risk-Aware Business Process Management ApproachabstractThe planning and effective usage of resources is a major challenge for organizations. More than ever through the global interconnections and the current economic situation the domain of resource allocation gains importance. Thus, within this paper we contribute to this research field by introducing a novel approach for dynamic activity and resource allocation using risk-aware business process simulations in order to facilitate and enhance planning and analysis activities. To clarify our work we show the application using a stylized business case. Simon Tjoa, Stefan Jakoubi, Sigrun Roat, Gerhard Kitzler

A roadmap to risk-aware business process managementabstractThe continuous, effective and efficient performance of business processes is the central element for entrepreneurial success. In order to achieve the abovementioned goal various disciplines are involved: The improvement from an economical viewpoint is mainly performed by the domain of business process management, whereas the consideration of risks and continuous execution of business processes is considered separately by risk management and business continuity management. We observed that this separation often leads to inefficiencies as decisions can be contradictory and a consistent information basis is missing. Therefore, we introduce our vision of risk-aware business process management that is capable of providing information for economic as well as for security disciplines. | 2009 | A process model for RFID based Business Process AnalysisabstractIn an agile and dynamic market, companies face the challenge to continually adapt their business processes. Technologies such as RFID allow companies to automatically monitor their business processes. This paper introduces RFID based Business Process Analysis (RBPA). With the usage of RFID transponders and readers, different types of data about existing business processes is acquired and used as input for a detailed process analysis and simulation as well as for the automatic generation of process models. The approach supports process managers in executing detailed business process analysis with less effort and more adequate parameters compared to existing approaches. | 2009 | A reference model for risk-aware business process managementabstractThe major contribution of this paper is the introduction of a reference model which is capable to consider information acquired within the business process management and risk management domain. The central objective of the reference model is to enable the modeling of risk aspects in such a way that it provides the foundation for risk-aware business process simulations. Within this paper, we firstly present an approach that combines essential activities of business process and risk management leading to risk aware business process management within an organization. Secondly, we illustrate our novel reference model which comprises extensions of existing modeling languages in order to meet our simulation-based risk-evaluation needs. We conclude this paper stating future research challenges. Stefan Jakoubi, Simon Tjoa

Enhancing Business Impact Analysis and Risk Assessment Applying a Risk-Aware Business Process Modeling and Simulation MethodologyabstractDriven by the steadily growing number of natural disasters, the threat of terrorist and other criminal attacks as well as changed legislation and regulations, companies are increasingly forced to prepare against threats that endanger the survivability of crucial business activities. As a consequence, management has to pay more attention to business continuity issues including serious management commitment and more appropriate funding. Business impact analysis and risk assessment concepts enable adequate business continuity planning as they deliver essential information about the impact of resources' disruption on business. In this paper we present how these concepts can be enhanced through the application of the ROPE (Risk-Oriented Process Evaluation) methodology enabling risk-aware business process management and simulation. Moreover, we present essential extensions of the ROPE simulation capabilities leading to a more efficient and effective business continuity planning. Simon Tjoa, Stefan Jakoubi, Gerald Quirchmayr

Extension of a Methodology for Risk-Aware Business Process Modeling and Simulation Enabling Process-Oriented Incident Handling SupportabstractIncreasingly, companies face the challenges to perform their business processes effectively as well as efficiently and to simultaneously assure the continuity of these processes. As the majority of companies rely on IT, it is essential to establish effective incident handling. In this paper, we introduce new extensions of the risk-aware business process management framework ROPE (risk-oriented process evaluation) in order to support the improvement of the management and execution of business processes. We further discuss the advantages of those extensions and how they can support the implementation of standards and best-practices such as the NIST SP800-61 (Computer Security Incident Handling Guide). | 2007 | CASSIS - Computer-based Academy for Security and Safety in Information SystemsabstractInformation technologies and society are highly interwoven nowadays, but in both, the private and business sector, users are often not aware of security issues or lack proper security skills. The branch of information technology security is growing constantly but attacks against the vocational sector as well as the personal sector still cause great losses each day. Considering that the end-user is the weakest link of the security chain we aim to raise awareness, regarding IT security, and train and educate IT security skills by establishing a European-wide initiative and framework Gernot Goluch, Andreas Ekelhart, Stefan Fenz, Stefan Jakoubi, Bernhard Riedl, Simon Tjoa
