2026 Knowledge contribution on enterprise social media and employee well-being
abstract
Enterprise social media (ESM) is a critical sociotechnical platform for organizational knowledge sharing. While research has extensively studied the antecedents of knowledge contribution on ESM, the consequences for the contributor have received little attention. We address this by investigating how knowledge-sharing behaviors on ESM affect the psychological well-being of contributors. Our study draws on data from surveys and uses digital trace data from a corporate ESM to supplement the analysis. Crucially, we distinguish the effects of work-related knowledge contributions (e.g., help with a work project) from those of nonwork-related contributions (e.g., advice on recovering after running a semi-marathon). This study offers a new, contributor-centric perspective on ESM, demonstrating its value beyond knowledge seeking. We also show that nonwork-related knowledge contributions are a significant positive trigger for employee well-being. Finally, we reveal that contributing knowledge on ESM is positively associated with the contributor’s own learning, a process that goes beyond vicarious learning.

2025 Impact of social media technologies on new product development performance: theory and empirical evidence
abstract
In current unpredictable environments, it is essential to understand customers’ needs as quickly as possible. Social media platforms are important sources of knowledge and developing a social media capability is critical in quickly sensing customers’ requirements. Social media capability can enable firms to co-create internal knowledge between employees, functional departments, and business units and external knowledge with customers. Despite the potential of social media for innovation, prior research has not studied the internal processes that should be developed to manage and leverage the information obtained through social media. Drawing upon the IT-enabled organisational capabilities perspective and the social media affordances theory, this study proposes a research model on the impact of social media capability, social knowledge co-creation, and NPD dynamic capabilities on NPD performance. The research model was tested on a sample of large European firms using survey and secondary data. Results show that social media capability enhances NPD performance by enabling firms to co-create knowledge and developing NPD dynamic capabilities. This study contributes by: (1) operationalising and measuring social media capability and social knowledge co-creation; and (2) demonstrating how social media capability improves NPD performance by co-creating knowledge and developing NPD dynamic capabilities to develop new products.

2025 Determinants of gamification effectiveness: perspectives of technology affordances and coping responses in the context of team-based gamified training
abstract
Firms face significant challenges in effectively training employees in adopting complex information systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP). Gamified training has emerged as a promising means to address these challenges. Despite this, prior research has paid little attention to the factors affecting the effective use of gamified training. This study aims to identify the determinants of the effective use of gamified training. Based on technology affordances, coping, and gamification literature, the study proposes that team-based gamification affordances (e.g. collaboration and competition affordances) affect coping responses (e.g. task-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping), leading to effective use. We utilized the ERP simulation game to empirically test the research model, employing a multi-study approach comprising two studies (Study 1 = 255 participants, Study 2 = 219 participants). Structural equation modelling was used for data analysis. Our results indicate that collaboration affordance significantly affects task-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping. However, competition affordance influenced only task-focused coping. We also found that task-focused and emotion-focused coping affected effective use. This study contributes to IS literature by highlighting gamification affordances and coping responses as important predictors of effective use in gamified training, leading organizations and IS scholars to design impactful and engaging gamified training programmes.

2025 Effects of leaderboard affordance and perceived role importance in team-based gamified training
abstract
Gamification has been effectively applied in organizational and academic training to enhance motivation. Among various game elements, leaderboards are particularly popular in gamified training environments. Grounded in gamification research, self-determination theory, and job demands-resources theory, this research investigates the relationships among leaderboard affordance, perceived role importance in a team (PRIT), satisfaction of the three psychological needs (perceived autonomy, competence, and relatedness), and two types of stress (distress and eustress). Using a team-based ERP simulation game for gamified ERP training, we conducted two studies (Study 1: N = 203 and Study 2: N = 216) and employed structural equation modelling to test our hypotheses. Our findings indicate that leaderboard affordance positively influences PRIT. Additionally, the results show that leaderboard affordance and PRIT increase needs satisfaction and eustress, while the effects on distress were minimal. This study contributes to gamification IS research by highlighting the impact of leaderboard affordances and PRIT in fostering positive psychological outcomes and expanding our understanding of stress in gamified training contexts. Our findings are important for organizations seeking to maintain motivation and engagement through gamified training.

2025 A field experiment on ISP training designs for enhancing employee information security compliance
abstract
Information security policy (ISP) training plays an important role in enhancing organisational resilience against cyber threats by providing employees with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively identify, prevent, and respond to security breaches. This research aims to explore how the use of deterrence arguments and threat arguments can enhance the effectiveness of ISP training. We theorise how ISP training affects employees’ ISP compliance behaviour by arguing for a transfer of training lens to study the effectiveness of ISP training. The results of our field experiment with triangulated data suggest that the effect of argumentative-enhanced ISP training is twofold. First, employees who participated in enhanced training sessions with deterrence and threat arguments demonstrated superior training outputs after the training, which, in turn, translated into a sustained training outcome three weeks after the training. Second, we also find evidence that threat arguments can reinforce the application of training outputs in the maintenance stage of learned behaviours. With this applied research study, we contribute to the research and practice by providing empirical evidence of the effectiveness of ISP training designs.

2025 Uncovering post-adoption usage of AI-based voice assistants: a technology affordance lens using a mixed-methods approach
abstract
Despite the growing proliferation of AI-based voice assistants in our daily lives, how different functions of AI-based voice assistants affect users’ post-adoption usage behaviours remains an under-investigated research question. This study explores the nature and causation of post-adoption usage behaviours (effective utilisation after initial adoption or diffusion) within the context of AI-based voice assistants. Using a sequential mixed-methods research design, we first identify the post-adoption usage behaviours of AI-based voice assistants as a multidimensional concept comprised of routine use and extended use, then develop a contextualised model by revealing technology-specific antecedents, cognitive beliefs, and boundary conditions. By integrating results from the quantitative study and qualitative study, we find that three technology affordances (i.e., anthropomorphism affordance, interactivity affordance, and personalisation affordance) are salient antecedents of two cognitive beliefs, which further affect users’ routine use and extended use of AI-based voice assistants. Additionally, we uncover use frequency as a boundary condition and obtain a complementary view of post-adoption usage of AI-based voice assistants. The empirical research findings can extend the post-adoption IS usage literature and provide practical implications for crafting user-centred functionalities to facilitate effective human-AI interactions.

2025 Impact of strategic capabilities on digital transformation success and firm performance: theory and empirical evidence
abstract
What is needed for organisations to succeed in digital transformation, and what is its advantage? Motivated by the ongoing high amount of failing digital transformations, this study identifies necessary predictors and outcomes of this prominent matter on the macro level. Drawing on strategic capabilities as enablers for the redefinition of business value and organisational identity in the digital era, we propose that the complementary synergies of strategic capabilities empower digital transformation success, improving firm performance. The results support the proposed model using structural equations modelling with multi-data from 154 organisations and complementary objective data. This study identifies synergistic facilitators for digital transformation success by providing an integrated portfolio of complementary capabilities (i.e., outside-in, spanning, and inside-out orientation). The study also contributes to IS research by offering a measurable conceptualisation of digital transformation success. In addition, findings empirically show the association between digital transformation success and firm performance to enable further investigations in the IS field. Finally, from the study’s findings, practical implications can guide organisations towards digital transformation success and firm performance.

2024 The differential impacts of top management support and transformational supervisory leadership on employees' digital performance
abstract
How do leaders across different hierarchies motivate employees’ job performance in the new digital age? In order to answer this under-investigated question, we first conceptualise digital performance as employees’ job performance that is attained through using the new generation of digital technologies and then propose a research model that integrates and differentiates the influential mechanisms of the dual leadership factors – top management support and transformational supervisory leadership – regarding employees’ digital-enabled task performance and innovative performance. Specifically, we tested the research model with two different samples, including 230 sales personnel from a large automobile manufacturing company and 206 employees from multiple joint ventures across different industries. We find that top management support exhibits a stronger influence on digital-enabled task performance than on innovative performance through the mediation of data-driven culture, while transformational supervisory leadership nurtures a stronger effect on digital-enabled innovative performance than on task performance through the mediation of digital self-efficacy. Our study consolidates and extends the technology use literature on management support and advances IS leadership theory to the digital context. Our findings also offer practical insights into the effective use of the new generation of digital technologies in organisations.

2024 The role of managerial activities in achieving Information technology ambidexterity and new product development performance in small and medium-sized enterprises
abstract
Given their limited portfolio of resources, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have to manage information technology (IT) exploitation and exploration at the same time to support a major shift in their product focus while maintaining their current array of products. We theorise that SMEs rely on managerial activities to enable IT ambidexterity to enhance the performance of their new product development (NPD). To this end, we hypothesise and test the relationships between managerial activities, IT ambidexterity, and NPD performance. Using multiple respondent data from 292 high-tech SMEs, we find that managerial activities enable IT ambidexterity, and this relationship is moderated by structural configurations. Considering the NPD management challenges ushered in by the digital era, our findings identify IT ambidexterity as a key mechanism to enhance NPD performance in SMEs. Our results contribute novel insights into the effective role of managerial activities in SMEs and help to explain the role of IT ambidexterity in the NPD literature, thereby facilitating continued theory development in this field of research.

2024 Technology-driven mandatory customer participation: a new recovery strategy to promote customers' online post-recovery satisfaction
abstract
E-commerce businesses have been developing new ways of engaging customers in the online service recovery process to realise value co-creation. Such practices have been facilitated by the rapid development of information and communication technology. However, scant research has been conducted on these changes. To bridge this research gap, we explain how the application of technology guides and shapes customers’ responsibilities in online service recovery by constructing the concept of technology-driven mandatory customer participation (MCP), which is a new recovery strategy from the perspective of technology affordance. Moreover, we propose a comprehensive model to explain the influence mechanism of technology-driven MCP on value co-creation. Two sequential studies were then conducted. The first was an initial qualitative study based on interviews with e-commerce practitioners in China, in which three factors of technology-driven MCP (physical, mental, and emotional) and two categories of loss (utilitarian and symbolic) were identified. The second quantitative study explored and validated the relationships between technology-driven MCP, perceived co-creation, experienced burnout, and online post-recovery satisfaction from a loss-aversion perspective. The theory-driven empirical findings provide recommendations for e-commerce businesses to enhance online service management.

2024 Exploring the influence of gamification-enabled customer experience on continuance intention towards digital platforms for e-government: An empirical investigation
abstract
Governments realize a significant gap exists between existing efforts in customer experience and citizen expectations for implementing a digital platform in e-government (DPEG), hindering citizens’ continuance intention. This study proposes a novel initiative called gamification-enabled customer experience. Based on the motivational lens, we develop and test a conceptual research model. We find that gamification-enabled customer experience positively impacts intrinsic and extrinsic motivations and continuance intention towards DPEG. Our results enrich IS research on digital platforms, customer experience, types of motivation, and behavior. We also offer practical guidelines for implementing a DPEG to execute gamified customer experience strategies.

2024 Digital human resource strategy: Conceptualization, theoretical development, and an empirical examination of its impact on firm performance
abstract
Companies increasingly rely on individuals' skills, enthusiasm, and creativity, all the while striving to fully embrace digitalization as an integral aspect of the business. Technological mediation has altered the design and functionality of work, although the Information Systems (IS) literature about human resource management (HRM) provides little empirical evidence of the synergy between the two fields. To shed light on how these interlinked systems generate performance gains, we draw on the sociotechnical perspective to propose the concept of digital HR strategy as an explicit recognition of the fusion and integration of HR processes and digital technologies. This paper also theorizes and empirically demonstrates that a digital HR strategy improves organizational performance. The model is empirically tested using archival data from a sample of 351 firms.

2023 Antecedents and performance outcomes of employees' data analytics skills: an adaptation structuration theory-based empirical investigation
abstract
How do organizations develop and manage employees’ data analytics skills to create business value and enhance organizational competitive advantage? In order to address this prominent and critical research question for IS research, we conceptualize and operationalize data analytics skills at the individual level and develop a nomological network model to examine its critical antecedents and outcomes from the lens of adaptation structuration theory. We test our core proposition and research model using survey data collected from 258 frontline employees of three data-intensive research institutes in China. We discover that data-driven culture, data analytics affordance, and individual absorptive capacity are positively associated with employees’ data analytics skills, which in turn, have positive influences on their task and innovative performance. We classify the employees into digital immigrants and digital natives based on age and examine the different influences of three salient antecedents on data analytics skills between the two groups. The research findings suggest that data-driven culture plays a more significant role in driving data analytics skills for digital immigrants, while data analytics affordance exhibits a stronger influence on data analytics skills for digital natives.

2022 The good, the bad, and the ugly: impact of analytics and artificial intelligence-enabled personal information collection on privacy and participation in ridesharing
abstract
Big data analytics (BDA) and artificial intelligence (AI) may provide both bright and dark sides that may affect user participation in ridesharing. We do not know whether the juxtaposed sides of these IT artefacts influence users’ cognitive appraisals, and if so, to what extent will their participative behaviour be affected. This paper contributes to the IS research by uncovering the interplay between the dark and bright sides of BDA and AI and the underlying mechanisms of cognitive appraisals for user behaviour in ridesharing. We performed two phases of the study using mixed-methods. In the first study, we conduct 21 semi-structured interviews to develop the research model. The second study empirically validated the research model using survey data of 332 passengers. We find that the usage of BDA and AI on ridesharing platforms have a bright side (usefulness, “the good”) but also a dark side (uncertainty and invasion of privacy, “the bad and the ugly”). The bright side generates perceived benefits, and the dark side shape perceived risks in users, which discount the risks from the benefits of using the ridesharing platform. Privacy control exerts a positive effect on the perceived benefits to encourage individuals to use the ridesharing platform.

2012 Information technology, the organizational capability of proactive corporate environmental strategy and firm performance: a resource-based analysis
abstract
The study of the relationships between information technology (IT), environmental organizational issues and firm performance is a cutting-edge research topic for the information systems (IS) community. However, at present we know very little about these relationships. Drawing on the perspective of IT-enabled organizational capabilities and the literature on organizations and the natural environment, our study introduces conceptually the construct organizational capability of proactive corporate environmental strategy to the IS field. We propose that IT capability may enable the implementation of a proactive environmental strategy and that this strategy could play a significant role in determining the business value of IT. Using structural equations modeling with data collected from 63 firms, we find that IT capability is an enabler of proactive environmental strategy and that this strategy plays a significant role in mediating the effects of IT on firm performance. Our study provides initial evidence on the role of IT in the implementation of proactive environmental practices. Our results suggest to IT executives that their decisions matter in shaping environmental sustainability, which in turn will generate business value from IT.
