2025 Self-Tuning Spectral Clustering for Speaker Diarization
abstract
Spectral clustering has proven effective in grouping speech representations for speaker diarization tasks, although post-processing the affinity matrix remains difficult due to the need for careful tuning before constructing the Laplacian. In this study, we present a novel pruning algorithm to create a sparse affinity matrix called spectral clustering on p-neighborhood retained affinity matrix (SC-pNA). Our method improves on node-specific fixed neighbor selection by allowing a variable number of neighbors, eliminating the need for external tuning data as the pruning parameters are derived directly from the affinity matrix. SC-pNA does so by identifying two clusters in every row of the initial affinity matrix, and retains only the top p% similarity scores from the cluster containing larger similarities. Spectral clustering is performed subsequently, with the number of clusters determined as the maximum eigengap. Experimental results on the challenging DIHARD-III dataset highlight the superiority of SC-pNA, which is also computationally more efficient than existing auto-tuning approaches. Our implementations are available at https://github.com/nikhilraghav29/SC-pNA.

2025 Kernelized Low-rank matrix recovery: Application in collaborative representation based classification
abstract
In the past there have been studies in kernelized versions of sparse recovery algorithms; most notably for l1-norm minimization and orthogonal matching pursuit. However, there has been no work on a kernel version of a related problem – low-rank matrix recovery via nuclear norm minimization. In this paper, we address this hitherto unsolved problem. The ensuing formulation is solved using the Majorisation Minimization (MM) approach. The reason for using MM is to ensure there are no additional hyper-parameters to tune. We apply this technique for Collaborative Representation based Classification (CRC). Experiments have been carried forth on video based face recognition on the VidTIMIT and iSAFE databases. Comparison has been done with other CRC approaches along with two dictionary learning based and two deep learning based techniques. Results show that our method improves over all of the aforesaid.

2024 Coalition Formation for Task Allocation Using Multiple Distance Metrics (Student Abstract)
abstract
Simultaneous Coalition Structure Generation and Assignment (SCSGA) is an important research problem in multi-agent systems. Given n agents and m tasks, the aim of SCSGA is to form m disjoint coalitions of n agents such that between the coalitions and tasks there is a one-to-one mapping, which ensures each coalition is capable of accomplishing the assigned task. SCSGA with Multi-dimensional Features (SCSGA-MF) extends the problem by introducing a d-dimensional vector for each agent and task. We propose a heuristic algorithm called Multiple Distance Metric (MDM) approach to solve SCSGA-MF. Experimental results confirm that MDM produces near optimal solutions, while being feasible for large-scale inputs within a reasonable time frame.

2024 Enhancing MRI-Based Classification of Alzheimer's Disease with Explainable 3D Hybrid Compact Convolutional Transformers
abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), characterized by progressive cognitive decline and memory loss, presents a formidable global health challenge, underscoring the critical importance of early and precise diagnosis for timely interventions and enhanced patient outcomes. While MRI scans provide valuable insights into brain structures, traditional analysis methods often struggle to discern intricate 3D patterns crucial for AD identification. Addressing this challenge, we introduce an alternative end-to-end deep learning model, the 3D Hybrid Compact Convolutional Transformers 3D (HCCT). By synergistically combining convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViTs), the 3D HCCT adeptly captures both local features and long-range relationships within 3D MRI scans. Extensive evaluations on prominent AD benchmark dataset, ADNI, demonstrate the 3D HCCT’s superior performance, surpassing state of the art CNN and transformer based methods in classification accuracy. Its robust generalization capability and interpretability marks a significant stride in AD classification from 3D MRI scans, promising more accurate and reliable diagnoses for improved patient care and superior clinical outcomes.

2021 Fuzzy Clustering to Identify Clusters at Different Levels of Fuzziness: An Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization Approach
abstract
Fuzzy clustering methods identify naturally occurring clusters in a dataset, where the extent to which different clusters are overlapped can differ. Most methods have a parameter to fix the level of fuzziness. However, the appropriate level of fuzziness depends on the application at hand. This paper presents an entropy c -means (ECM), a method of fuzzy clustering that simultaneously optimizes two contradictory objective functions, resulting in the creation of fuzzy clusters with different levels of fuzziness. This allows ECM to identify clusters with different degrees of overlap. ECM optimizes the two objective functions using two multiobjective optimization methods, nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) and multiobjective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D). We also propose a method to select a suitable tradeoff clustering from the Pareto front. Experiments on challenging synthetic datasets as well as real-world datasets show that ECM leads to better cluster detection compared to the conventional fuzzy clustering methods as well as previously used multiobjective methods for fuzzy clustering.
