2024 A 10b 400MS/s 2x-Time-Interleaved 2-Then-1b/Cycle SAR ADC in 90nm CMOS
abstract
This paper presents a 10-bit two-channel time-interleaved successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to achieve a maximum sampling rate of 400 MHz in 90-nm CMOS. The channel-ADC incorporates a 2b/cycle-assisted SAR architecture to effectively speed up its operation speed. A new dynamic register is proposed to reduce the DAC control delay. To maintain small capacitor arrays, a multiple-reference C-DAC is applied to avoid using a tiny unit capacitance. This prototype ADC consumes a total power of 3 mW from a 1.2-V supply at 400-MS/s. Measured DNL and INL are -0.77/+1.2 LSB and -1/+1 LSB, respectively. The measured peak SNDR and SFDR are 51 dB and 62.3 dB, respectively. The measured ENOB is 8.2 bits, equivalent to a figure-of-merit of 25.5 fJ/conversion-step.

2009 Automatic Die Inspection for Post-sawing LED Wafers
abstract
Wafer defect inspection is an important process that is performed before die packaging. Conventional wafer inspections are usually performed using human visual judgment. A large number of people visually inspect wafers and hand-mark the defective regions. This requires considerable personnel resources and misjudgment may be introduced due to human fatigue. In order to overcome these shortcomings, this study develops an automatic inspection system that can recognize defective LED dies. An artificial neural network is adopted in the inspection. Actual data obtained from a semiconductor manufacturing company in Taiwan were used in the experiments. The results show that the proposed approach successfully identified the defective dies on LED wafers. Personnel costs and misjudgment due to human fatigue can be reduced using the proposed approach.

2005 PEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 Codec IP Development
abstract
The paper summarizes our design experiences of various image and video codec IPs. The design issues and methodology of custom video codecs are discussed. The design methodology can be summarized as four stages: system analysis; algorithm optimization; architecture exploration; code development. Based on these guidelines, several design cases are presented, including the proposed JPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 architectures.

2005 Advances in Hardware Architectures for Image and Video Coding - A Survey
abstract
This paper provides a survey of state-of-the-art hardware architectures for image and video coding. Fundamental design issues are discussed with particular emphasis on efficient dedicated implementation. Hardware architectures for MPEG-4 video coding and JPEG 2000 still image coding are reviewed as design examples, and special approaches exploited to improve efficiency are identified. Further perspectives are also presented to address the challenges of hardware architecture design for advanced image and video coding in the future.

2003 Platform architecture design for MEG-4 video coding
abstract
This paper presents a cost-effective platform architecture design for MPEG-4 video coding. A fast motion estimator architecture supporting predictive diamond search and spiral full search with halfway termination is implemented to make good compromise between compression performance and design cost. An efficient block-level scheduling for texture coding engine is employed to reduce the hardware cost. Both these key modules are integrated into an efficient platform in hardware/software co-design fashion. With high degree of optimization in both algorithm and architecture levels, a cost-efficient video encoder is implemented. It consumes 256.8 mW at 40 MHz and achieves real-time encoding of 30 CIF (352/spl times/288) frames per second.

2002 Texture coder design of MPEG4 video by using interleaving schedule
abstract
For MPEG-4 texture coding, an efficient Interleaving DCT and IDCT Schedule (IDIS) is proposed. With this scheme, the DCT-Q-IQ-IDCT coding loop can be implemented with no buffers and least latency, which in turn makes the number of buffers for MC a minimum of two. Also by the characteristics of IDIS, a substructure sharing technique is applied for DC/AC prediction with Q and IQ to reduce hardware cost further. All the functions are integrated to comprise the block engine for texture coding operations in the MPEG-4 video standard. For a encoding sequence of 720/spl times/480 at 30 fps, real-time requirement can be achieved at 54 MHz. The proposed scheduling can be further applied to other video coding standards for a cost-effective SOC implementation.

2002 VLSI architecture design of MPEG-4 shape coding
abstract
This paper presents an efficient VLSI architecture design of MPEG-4 shape coding, which is the key technology for supporting the content-based functionality of the MPEG-4 video standard. The real-time constraint of MPEG-4 shape coding leads to a heavy computational bottleneck on today's computer architectures. To overcome this problem, design analysis and optimization of MPEG-4 shape coding are addressed. By utilizing the RISC-based model, computational behaviors of the MPEG-4 shape coding tool are carefully examined and analyzed. The characteristic of a large amount of bit-level data processing and data transfer of MPEG-4 shape coding motivates the optimization of bit-level data operations. Applying data-flow optimization and data reuse techniques, bit-level computation-efficient architectures, such as data-dispatch-based binary-shaped motion estimation, the delay-line model, and configurable context-based arithmetic coding, are designed to accelerate bit-level processing. These hardware blocks are integrated and scheduled in a very efficient data flow to achieve real-time performance for MPEG-4 CPL2 (core profile level 2) specification at 23.5 MHz clock rate. The system architecture is implemented using Verilog HDL and synthesized with a 0.35 /spl mu/m four-layer CMOS standard library.

2001 Design and implementation of JPEG encoder IP core
abstract
Abstract- A complete, low cost baseline JPEG encoder soft IP and its chip implementation are presented in this paper. It features user-defined, run-time re-configurable quantization tables, highly modularized and fully pipelined architecture. A prototype, synthesized with COMPASS cell library, has been implemented in TSMC 0.6-pm single-poly, triple-metal process. It can run up to 40 MHz at 3.3V. This IP can be easily integrated into various application systems, such as scanner, PC camera and color FAX, etc. I.

2001 Error-Propagation Analysis and Concealment Strategy for MPEG-4 Video Bitstream with Data Partitioning
abstract
Data partitioning, one of the MPEG-4 video error resilience tools, enables better error robustness. However, it suffers from serious error propagation problem. In this paper, we use an experimental approach to model the error propagation with several commonly used error detection conditions. It is shown that errors detected in forward section of texture data may be propagated from motion data, while those in DCT coefficients mostly result from themselves. Furthermore, the motion marker is the major error source for several error conditions detected in motion part. According to these characteristics, motion marker assumption and backtracking-based concealment strategies are proposed to achieve more accurate error localization in bitstream domain. 1.

2000 Performance analysis and architecture evaluation of MPEG-4 video codec system
abstract
This paper presents various analyses of computational behavior. Namely, the number of datapath operations and memory access on the core profile level 2 (CPL2) of MPEG-4 video standard. These analyzed data exploit the load distribution and mode selection of the video system. The exploration of data-flow behavior and its derived computation of MPEG-4 video processing algorithms will then drive through an efficient architecture design.

2000 MPEG-4 video bitstream structure analysis and its parsing architecture design
abstract
In this paper, the hardware-oriented structure analysis and an efficient and flexible bitstream parser for MPEG-4 video are presented. The analysis of bitstream structure explores processing requirement and design constraint for bitstream-level processing. The proposed architecture is basically RAM-based that can be reconfigured for various applications. For high bitrate as about 40 Mbit/s, it needs only about 19 MIPS to parse the bitstream. The impact of the proposed architecture on MPEG-4 video is to enhance and extend the processing for bit domain translation and related real time applications.
