2025 Animate Anyone 2: High-Fidelity Character Image Animation with Environment Affordance
abstract
Recent character image animation methods based on diffusion models, such as Animate Anyone, have made significant progress in generating consistent and generalizable character animations. However, these approaches fail to produce reasonable associations between characters and their environments. To address this limitation, we introduce Animate Anyone 2, aiming to animate characters with environment affordance. Beyond extracting motion signals from source video, we additionally capture environmental representations as conditional inputs. The environment is formulated as the region with the exclusion of characters and our model generates characters to populate these regions while maintaining coherence with the environmental context. We propose a shape-agnostic mask strategy that more effectively characterizes the relationship between character and environment. Furthermore, to enhance the fidelity of object interactions, we leverage an object guider to extract features of interacting objects and employ spatial blending for feature injection. We also introduce a pose modulation strategy that enables the model to handle more diverse motion patterns. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

2025 ExtPose: Robust and Coherent Pose Estimation by Extending ViTs
abstract
Vision Transformers (ViT) are remarkable at 3D pose estimation, yet they still encounter certain challenges. One issue is that the popular ViT architecture for pose estimation is limited to images and lacks temporal information. Another challenge is that the prediction often fails to maintain pixel alignment with the original images. To address these issues, we propose a systematic framework for 3D pose estimation, called ExtPose. ExtPose extends image ViT to the challenging scenario and video setting by taking in additional 2D pose evidence and capturing temporal information in a full attention-based manner. We use 2D human skeleton images to integrate structured 2D pose information. By sharing parameters and attending across modalities and frames, we enhance the consistency between 3D poses and 2D videos without introducing additional parameters. We achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on multiple human and hand pose estimation benchmarks with substantial improvements to 34.0mm (-23%) on 3DPW and 4.9mm (-18%) on FreiHAND in PA-MPJPE over the other ViT-based methods respectively.

2023 Towards Stable Human Pose Estimation via Cross-View Fusion and Foot Stabilization
abstract
Towards stable human pose estimation from monocular images, there remain two main dilemmas. On the one hand, the different perspectives, i.e., front view, side view, and top view, appear the inconsistent performances due to the depth ambiguity. On the other hand, foot posture plays a significant role in complicated human pose estimation, i.e., dance and sports, and foot-ground interaction, but unfortunately, it is omitted in most general approaches and datasets. In this paper, we first propose the Cross-View Fusion (CVF) module to catch up with better 3D intermediate representation and alleviate the view inconsistency based on the vision transformer encoder. Then the optimization-based method is introduced to reconstruct the foot pose and foot-ground contact for the general multi-view datasets including AIST++ and Human3.6M. Besides, the reversible kinematic topology strategy is innovated to utilize the contact information into the full-body with foot pose regressor. Extensive experiments on the popular benchmarks demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches by achieving 40.1mm PA-MPJPE on the 3DPW test set and 43.8mm on the AIST++ test set.

2021 A Virtual Character Generation and Animation System for E-Commerce Live Streaming
abstract
Virtual character has been widely adopted in many areas, such as virtual assistant, virtual customer service, robotics and etc. In this paper, we focus on its application in e-commerce live streaming. Particularly, we propose a virtual character generation and animation system that supports e-commerce live streaming with virtual characters as anchors. The system offers a virtual character face generation tool based on a weakly supervised 3D face reconstruction method. The method takes a single photo as input and generates a 3D face model with both similarity and aesthetics considered. It does not require 3D face annotation data due to the assist of differentiable neural rendering technique which seamlessly integrates rendering into a deep learning based 3D face reconstruction framework. Moreover, the system provides two animation approaches which support two different ways of live stream respectively. The first approach is based on real-time motion capture. An actor's performance is captured in real-time via a monocular camera, and then utilized for animating a virtual anchor. The second approach is text driven animation, in which the human-like animation is automatically generated based on a text script. The relationship between text script and animation is learned based on the training data which can be accumulated via the motion capture based animation. To our best knowledge, the presented work is the first sophisticated virtual character generation and animation system that is designed for e-commerce live streaming and actually deployed on an online shopping platform with millions of daily audiences.

2021 Deformable Gabor Feature Networks for Biomedical Image Classification
abstract
In recent years, deep learning has dominated progress in the field of medical image analysis. We find however, that the ability of current deep learning approaches to represent the complex geometric structures of many medical images is insufficient. One limitation is that deep learning models require a tremendous amount of data, and it is very difficult to obtain a sufficient amount with the necessary detail. A second limitation is that there are underlying features of these medical images that are well established, but the black-box nature of existing convolutional neural networks (CNNs) do not allow us to exploit them. In this paper, we revisit Gabor filters and introduce a deformable Gabor convolution (DGConv) to expand deep networks interpretability and enable complex spatial variations. The features are learned at deformable sampling locations with adaptive Gabor convolutions to improve representitiveness and robustness to complex objects. The DGConv replaces standard convolutional layers and is easily trained end-to-end, resulting in deformable Gabor feature network (DGFN) with few additional parameters and minimal additional training cost. We introduce DGFN for addressing deep multi-instance multi-label classification on the INbreast dataset for mammograms and on the ChestX-ray14 dataset for pulmonary x-ray images.

2020 Binarized Neural Architecture Search
abstract
Neural architecture search (NAS) can have a significant impact in computer vision by automatically designing optimal neural network architectures for various tasks. A variant, binarized neural architecture search (BNAS), with a search space of binarized convolutions, can produce extremely compressed models. Unfortunately, this area remains largely unexplored. BNAS is more challenging than NAS due to the learning inefficiency caused by optimization requirements and the huge architecture space. To address these issues, we introduce channel sampling and operation space reduction into a differentiable NAS to significantly reduce the cost of searching. This is accomplished through a performance-based strategy used to abandon less potential operations. Two optimization methods for binarized neural networks are used to validate the effectiveness of our BNAS. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed BNAS achieves a performance comparable to NAS on both CIFAR and ImageNet databases. An accuracy of 96.53% vs. 97.22% is achieved on the CIFAR-10 dataset, but with a significantly compressed model, and a 40% faster search than the state-of-the-art PC-DARTS.

2020 Cogradient Descent for Bilinear Optimization
abstract
Conventional learning methods simplify the bilinear model by regarding two intrinsically coupled factors independently, which degrades the optimization procedure. One reason lies in the insufficient training due to the asynchronous gradient descent, which results in vanishing gradients for the coupled variables. In this paper, we introduce a Cogradient Descent algorithm (CoGD) to address the bilinear problem, based on a theoretical framework to coordinate the gradient of hidden variables via a projection function. We solve one variable by considering its coupling relationship with the other, leading to a synchronous gradient descent to facilitate the optimization procedure. Our algorithm is applied to solve problems with one variable under the sparsity constraint, which is widely used in the learning paradigm. We validate our CoGD considering an extensive set of applications including image reconstruction, inpainting, and network pruning. Experiments show that it improves the state-of-the-art by a significant margin.

2020 CP-NAS: Child-Parent Neural Architecture Search for 1-bit CNNs
abstract
Neural architecture search (NAS) proves to be among the best approaches for many tasks by generating an application-adaptive neural architectures, which are still challenged by high computational cost and memory consumption. At the same time, 1-bit convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with binarized weights and activations show their potential for resource-limited embedded devices. One natural approach is to use 1-bit CNNs to reduce the computation and memory cost of NAS by taking advantage of the strengths of each in a unified framework. To this end, a Child-Parent model is introduced to a differentiable NAS to search the binarized architecture(Child) under the supervision of a full-precision model (Parent). In the search stage, the Child-Parent model uses an indicator generated by the parent and child model accuracy to evaluate the performance and abandon operations with less potential. In the training stage, a kernel level CP loss is introduced to optimize the binarized network. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed CP-NAS achieves a comparable accuracy with traditional NAS on both the CIFAR and ImageNet databases. It achieves an accuracy of 95.27% on CIFAR-10, 64.3% on ImageNet with binarized weights and activations, and a 30% faster search than prior arts.

2020 The Structure Transfer Machine Theory and Applications
abstract
Representation learning is a fundamental but challenging problem, especially when the distribution of data is unknown. In this paper, we propose a new representation learning method, named Structure Transfer Machine (STM), which enables feature learning process to converge at the representation expectation in a probabilistic way. We theoretically show that such an expected value of the representation (mean) is achievable if the manifold structure can be transferred from the data space to the feature space. The resulting structure regularization term, named manifold loss, is incorporated into the loss function of the typical deep learning pipeline. The STM architecture is constructed to enforce the learned deep representation to satisfy the intrinsic manifold structure from the data, which results in robust features that suit various application scenarios, such as digit recognition, image classification and object tracking. Compared with state-of-the-art CNN architectures, we achieve better results on several commonly used public benchmarks.

2019 Calibrated Stochastic Gradient Descent for Convolutional Neural Networks
abstract
In stochastic gradient descent (SGD) and its variants, the optimized gradient estimators may be as expensive to compute as the true gradient in many scenarios. This paper introduces a calibrated stochastic gradient descent (CSGD) algorithm for deep neural network optimization. A theorem is developed to prove that an unbiased estimator for the network variables can be obtained in a probabilistic way based on the Lipschitz hypothesis. Our work is significantly distinct from existing gradient optimization methods, by providing a theoretical framework for unbiased variable estimation in the deep learning paradigm to optimize the model parameter calculation. In particular, we develop a generic gradient calibration layer which can be easily used to build convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Experimental results demonstrate that CNNs with our CSGD optimization scheme can improve the stateof-the-art performance for natural image classification, digit recognition, ImageNet object classification, and object detection tasks. This work opens new research directions for developing more efficient SGD updates and analyzing the backpropagation algorithm.
