| 2026 | Can LLMs Write Correct TLA + Specifications? Evaluating Natural-Language-to-TLA + GenerationabstractTLA+ has supported industrial verification at companies such as Amazon and Microsoft, yet writing correct TLA+ specifications from natural language still requires time and expertise, which limits adoption. LLMs show promise, but no prior study measures whether they produce semantically correct TLA+ specifications from natural language. This paper presents the first systematic evaluation of LLM-based TLA+ specification synthesis from natural language. Our study evaluates 30 LLMs across eight families on a curated dataset of 205 TLA+ specifications: 25 open-weight models across four prompting strategies (2,600 runs) and 5 proprietary models under few-shot prompting (130 runs), all validated by the SANY parser and TLC model checker. LLMs achieve up to 26.6% syntactic correctness but only 8.6% semantic correctness, with successes exclusive to progressive prompting. Results show that model size does not predict quality, e.g., DeepSeek r1:8b outperforms its 70B variant across all strategies, which suggests the importance of reasoning alignment for formal languages. Code-specialized models consistently underperform due to negative transfer from mainstream language training. We identify five recurring hallucination categories, all traceable to specific training data biases. These results suggest that current LLMs do not generate reliable TLA+ specifications without expert oversight. We release the evaluation framework, code, and dataset to support reproducibility and future research. Arslan Bisharat, Brian Ortiz, Eric Spencer, Khushboo Bhadauria, TaiNing Wang, George K. | 2026 | TLA-Prover: Verifiable TLA+ Specification Synthesis via Preference-Optimized Low-Rank AdaptationabstractTLA+ is a formal specification language for verifying distributed systems and safety-critical protocols. Large language models (LLMs) frequently produce TLA+ specifications that fail the TLC model checker for semantic reasons. Across 25 LLMs, the best public baseline is 26.6% syntactic parse and 8.6% semantic model-check. We present TLA-Prover, a 20-billion-parameter model for TLA+ specification synthesis. Training combines supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on verified examples with repair-based group-relative policy optimization (GRPO). In the GRPO stage, the model learns to fix its own rejected specifications. We also train a direct preference optimization (DPO) variant from the same SFT checkpoint as an ablation. TLC provides the reward signal directly, with no learned reward model. Four tiers grade each output: Bronze (parses), Silver (no warnings), Gold (passes TLC), and Diamond. To reach Diamond, the model's correctness property is automatically altered in a small way; TLC must then detect a violation. If TLC still passes, the property was always-true and contributes nothing; the output fails Diamond. TLA-Prover reaches 9/30 (i.e. pass@1 = 30%) at both Gold and Diamond on a held-out 30-problem benchmark. This is roughly 3.5x the 8.6% untuned baseline. The DPO variant reaches 20% at Diamond. Gold and Diamond coincide at every checkpoint; this prevents the trivial-property failure mode. Eric Spencer, Arslan Bisharat, Brian Ortiz, Mujtaba Nazari, Khushboo Bhadauria, TaiNing Wang, George K. | 2023 | Complete Join Reordering for Null-Intolerant JoinsabstractThe join reordering problem is a core task in query optimization to find the most efficient evaluation order for join operations. The Enhanced Compensation-based Approach (ECA) is the state-of-the-art approach for this problem which is based on using new operators called compensation operators to enlarge the query plan search space with more join reorderings. However, ECA cannot provide complete join reorderability for queries involving one or more full outerjoins. In this paper, we present the first complete join reordering solution, named CJR. By introducing a new and more expressive compensation operator and an enhanced set of rewriting rules, CJR is able to provide complete join reorderability for all join queries with null-intolerant join predicates. Our experimental results on the Join Order Benchmark demonstrate that CJR can improve query performance by a factor of 12.32. TaiNing Wang, Yunpeng Niu, Chee Yong Chan |

| 2020 | Improved Correlated Sampling for Join Size EstimationabstractRecent research on sampling-based join size estimation has focused on a promising new technique known as correlated sampling. While several variants of this technique have been proposed, there is a lack of a systematic study of this family of techniques. In this paper, we first introduce a framework to characterize its design space in terms of five parameters. Based on this framework, we propose a new correlated sampling based technique to address the limitations of existing techniques. Our new technique is based on using a discrete learning method for estimating the join size from samples. We experimentally compare the performance of multiple variants of our new technique and identify a hybrid variant that provides the best estimation quality. This hybrid variant not only outperforms the state-of-the-art correlated sampling technique, but it is also more robust to small samples and skewed data. TaiNing Wang, Chee Yong Chan |

| 2018 | Improving Join Reorderability with Compensation OperatorsabstractA critical task in query optimization is the join reordering problem which is to find an efficient evaluation order for the join operators in a query plan. While the join reordering problem is well studied for queries with only inner-joins, the problem becomes considerably harder when outerjoins/antijoins are involved as such operators are generally not associative. The existing solutions for this problem do not enumerate the complete space of join orderings due to various restrictions on the query rewriting rules considered. In this paper, we present a novel approach for this problem for the class of queries involving inner-joins, single-sided outerjoins, and/or antijoins. Our work is able to support complete join reorderability for this class of queries which supersedes the state-of-the-art approaches. TaiNing Wang, Chee Yong Chan |
