2020 Experimental Investigation of Lasing Modes in Double-Lattice Photonic-Crystal Resonators and Introduction of In-Plane Heterostructures
abstract
Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) are attractive for a wide range of applications such as material processing and remote sensing owing to their advantage of broad-area coherent lasing supported by a 2-D photonic crystal. Recently, we proposed double-lattice photonic-crystal resonators and achieved 10-W-class high-power and high-beam-quality (namely, high-brightness) operation. To further increase the brightness, it is important to understand the lasing mode behavior of PCSELs in detail. In this article, we experimentally investigate the change in the lasing mode depending on the current injection levels and compare the results with a theoretical analysis that accounts for the change in refractive index and gain distributions due to the current injection. We observed a transition from single-mode lasing to two-mode lasing at high injection currents. We develop a technique for resolving the near-field profiles of individual lasing modes and show that these profiles coincide with theoretical predictions. A comparison of experimental and theoretical results reveals that high-order modes appear due to a bandgap confinement effect induced by a change in the refractive index in the carrier injection area. To effectively remove this confinement effect and suppress the oscillation of high-order modes, we incorporate an in-plane heterostructure into the PCSEL.

2018 Photonic Crystal Devices in Silicon Photonics
abstract
In this paper, we review the history of 2-D photonic crystal slabs with a focus on point-defect cavities that can simultaneously realize ultrasmall modal volumes and ultrahigh quality factors. An important design concept to suppress radiation loss is introduced: the envelope of the cavity mode field should have no abrupt changes and should ideally follow a Gaussian function. Cubic-wavelength-order modal volumes, with experimental Q factors exceeding 11000000, are obtained by tailoring the envelope functions using heterostructure nanocavities. We also discuss light/photon manipulation techniques, which are enabled by the emergence of high-Q photonic crystal nanocavities, including ultracompact channel add/drop filters, ultralow-threshold silicon nanocavity Raman lasers, and strong coupling between distant nanocavities via the adiabatic transfer of photons.

2005 Lasing band-edge identification for a surface-emitting photonic crystal laser
abstract
The possibility of single-mode oscillation over a large cavity area for photonic crystal lasers emitting at the photonic band edge has resulted in much interest in such materials for new forms of solid-state laser. In this paper, we measure the photonic bandstructure in our sample and identify the lasing band edge. By mapping out the bandstructure at the /spl Gamma/-point, we have observed fine structure at the band edge. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretically predicted bandstructure. Above threshold, we observe a lasing peak at 965 nm at one of the band edges. The far-field distribution of the laser is measured, showing an annular profile and azimuthal polarization. Calculations on the far-field distribution at the lasing band edge suggest the annular profile is due to an anti-symmetric resonant mode.
