2026 Evaluating Eye-Tracking Challenges in Gaze-Controlled Musical Applications for Users with Motor Disabilities
abstract
Eye tracking enables musical expression for individuals with motor disabilities, yet gaze-based music apps remain scarce and challenging. This study qualitatively evaluates five gaze-controlled musical programs through questionnaires and dialog transcription with seven participants: five music professionals, one person with cerebral palsy expert in multimedia education, and one inclusive communication specialist. The analysis focuses on three eye tracking obstacles: inaccuracy, the Midas Touch problem, and eye fatigue. Results show that under these testing conditions, larger, spaced-out buttons reduce accidental touches, while customizable structures offer advantages; however current programs require assistance rather than enabling autonomous use. Scroll-based interaction proved difficult and accident-prone and is not recommended. Midas Touch and inaccuracy were the most frequent obstacles, while eye fatigue may contribute to interaction overload. Music professionals expressed a need for programs oriented towards musical production, but none of the evaluated applications fully addressed this demand.

2023 Peak-end rule in narrative videogames: analysis of players' perceptions on social media about "The Last of Us Part II" and "God of War"
abstract
The peak-end rule is a psychological heuristic that describes how people remember experiences based on the most extreme or peak moment, and on the final moment. This experience tends to influence people in how they judge the overall quality of something, particularly in video games. The most intense and/or exciting moment of the game, and its conclusion, are the important factors in determining the player's willingness to continue playing, the memorization, and the dissemination. Through an exploratory analysis of the perceptions of players on social networks, regarding the video games "The Last of Us Part II" and "God of War", it was found that it is essential that the games have a peak and an ending to produce the positive effect and, consequently, be recognized by the gaming community, making these games as the most representative, remarkable and finished.

2021 Mechanics or Mechanisms: defining differences in analog games to support game design
abstract
This research intends to clarify the difference between game mechanisms and mechanics. We propose the reinforcement of game mechanisms as building blocks for game design. After analyzing Board Game Geek (BGG) mechanisms databases and crossing it with the literature review and game examples, we provide a new classification for board game mechanisms. Departing from the Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics (MDA) framework, we propose the Mechanisms, Mechanics, Dynamics, and Experience (MMDE) approach to fit the different concepts of mechanics and mechanisms to analog game systems. These findings should clarify the concept of mechanisms as building blocks for analog game design, which is also useful for hybrid and digital game design.

2014 Merry go round: a physical, virtual, physical... toy
abstract
We present a mixed-reality interface, in which a carrousel-like platform carries a set of wooden figures from the physical world into a game running inside a tablet, bringing them back to the physical world again by further rotating the platform. The wooden figurines allow young children to manipulate and play with them, working at the same time as characters of a game. Along the interaction, users are confronted with different problem solving situations that they can solve with the help of the wooden characters.

2013 Bridging book: a not-so-electronic children's picturebook
abstract
We present and technically describe the implementation of a book prototype: the Bridging Book, a children's mixed-media picture-book that blurs the line between printed and electronic books.

2013 Bridging books: the printed book as a support for digital experiences
abstract
It has been 20 years since Pierre Wellner published the article Interacting with paper on the digital desk [1] where he challenges us to imagine a space where "Instead of replacing paper with computers we could enhance paper with computation". Two decades after, we see the development of multiple projects that expand the expressive possibilities of traditional books by combining and crossing different media. Nevertheless the interest generated by those projects is limited, most of the time, to the research communities. The purpose of this IDC 2013 workshop is to bring together a community of researchers, publishers and authors to reflect and discuss the present and future impact of mixed media books.
