| 2025 | veDB-HTAP: a Highly Integrated, Efficient and Adaptive HTAP SystemabstractIn this paper, we describe veDB-HTAP, a highly integrated, efficient, and adaptive HTAP system recently built in ByteDance. veDB-HTAP adopts a highly integrated system architecture by leveraging the Secondary Engine mechanism provided by MySQL and provides a seamless query processing experience across OLTP and OLAP engines. In addition, we introduce a cost-based and machine-learning-based smart query router that significantly outperforms the rule-based query router used in ByteHTAP, a precursor of veDB-HTAP. A key design principle of veDB-HTAP is the collaboration and adaptability of major system components, including query planning, query execution, and unified storage. Our adaptive query execution can be classified into two categories: 1) adaptive execution that dynamically collects and utilizes runtime statistics for better query performance; 2) utilizing runtime resource information to achieve a high quality of service even under heavy workloads. The experiments show that veDB-HTAP can achieve more than 3× speedup for TPC-H while consuming only one-third of the resources compared to ByteHTAP. | 2024 | SFVInt: Simple, Fast and Generic Variable-Length Integer Decoding using Bit Manipulation InstructionsabstractThe ubiquity of variable-length integers in data storage and communication necessitates efficient decoding techniques. In this paper, we present SFVInt, a simple and fast approach to decode the prevalent Little Endian Base-128 (LEB128) varints. Our approach effectively utilizes the Bit Manipulation Instruction Set 2 (BMI2) in modern Intel and AMD processors, achieving significant performance improvement while maintaining simplicity and avoiding overengineering. SFVInt, with its generic design, effectively processes both 32-bit and 64-bit unsigned integers using a unified code template, marking a significant leap forward in varint decoding efficiency. We thoroughly evaluate SFVInt's performance across various datasets and scenarios, demonstrating that it achieves up to a 2x increase in decoding speed when compared to varint decoding methods used in established frameworks like Facebook Folly and Google Protobuf. | 2022 | ByteHTAP: ByteDance's HTAP System with High Data Freshness and Strong Data ConsistencyabstractIn recent years, at ByteDance, we see more and more business scenarios that require performing complex analysis over freshly imported data, together with transaction support and strong data consistency. In this paper, we describe our journey of building ByteHTAP, an HTAP system with high data freshness and strong data consistency. It adopts a separate-engine and shared-storage architecture. Its modular system design fully utilizes an existing ByteDance's OLTP system and an open source OLAP system. This choice saves us a lot of resources and development time and allows easy future extensions such as replacing the query processing engine with other alternatives. ByteHTAP can provide high data freshness with less than one second delay, which enables many new business opportunities for our customers. Customers can also configure different data freshness thresholds based on their business needs. ByteHTAP also provides strong data consistency through global timestamps across its OLTP and OLAP system, which greatly relieves application developers from handling complex data consistency issues by themselves. In addition, we introduce some important performance optimizations to ByteHTAP, such as pushing computations to the storage layer and using delete bitmaps to efficiently handle deletes. Lastly, we will share our lessons and best practices in developing and running ByteHTAP in production. | 2018 | FusionInsight LibrA: Huawei's Enterprise Cloud Data Analytics PlatformabstractHuawei Fusion Insight Libr A (FI-MPPDB) is a petabyte scale enterprise analytics platform developed by the Huawei data-base group. It started as a prototype more than five years ago, and is now being used by many enterprise customers over the globe, including some of the world's largest financial institutions. Our product direction and enhancements have been mainly driven by customer requirements in the fast evolving Chinese market. This paper describes the architecture of FI-MPPDB and some of its major enhancements. In particular, we focus on top four requirements from our customers related to data analytics on the cloud: system availability, auto tuning, query over heterogeneous data models on the cloud, and the ability to utilize powerful modern hardware for good performance. We present our latest advancements in the above areas including online expansion, auto tuning in query optimizer, SQL on HDFS, and intelligent JIT compiled execution. Finally, we present some experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of these technologies. Le Cai, Jianjun Chen 0001, Kuorong Chiang, Marko A. | 2004 | A Compiler Scheme for Reusing Intermediate Computation ResultsabstractRecent research has shown that programs often exhibit value locality. Such locality occurs when a code segment, although executed repeatedly in the program, takes only a small number of different values as input and, naturally, generates a small number of different outputs. It is potentially beneficial to replace such a code segment by a table, which records the computation results for the previous inputs. When the program execution re-enters the code segment with a repeated input, its computation can be simplified to a table look-up. We discuss a compiler scheme to identify code segments, which are good candidates for computation reuse. We discuss the conditions under which the table look-up costs less than repeating the execution, and we perform profiling to identify candidates, which have many repeated inputs at run time. Compared to previous work, this scheme requires no special hardware support and is therefore particularly useful for resource constrained systems such as handheld computing devices. We implement our scheme and its supporting analyses in GCC. We experiment with several multimedia benchmarks and the GNU Go game by executing them on a handheld computing device. The results show the scheme to improve the performance and to reduce the energy consumption quite substantially for these programs. Yonghua Ding, Zhiyuan Li 0001 |

| 2003 | A Compiler Analysis of Interprocedural Data CommunicationabstractThis paper presents a compiler analysis for data communication for the purpose of transforming ordinary programs into ones that run on distributed systems. Such transformations have been used for process migration and computation offloading to improve the performance of mobile computing devices. In a client-server distributed environment, the efficiency of an application can be improved by careful partitioning of tasks between the server and the client. Optimal task partitioning depends on the tradeoff between the computation workload and the communication cost. Our compiler analysis, assisted by a minimum set of user assertions, estimates the amount of data communication between procedures. The paper also presents experimental results based on an implementation in the GCC compiler. The static estimates for several multimedia programs are compared against dynamic measurement performed using Shade, a SUN Microsystem's instruction-level simulator. The results show a high precision of the static analysis for most pairs of the procedures. Yonghua Ding, Zhiyuan Li 0001 |
