2025 HairFree: Compositional 2D Head Prior for Text-Driven 360° Bald Texture Synthesis
abstract
Synthesizing high-quality 3D head textures is crucial for gaming, virtual reality, and digital humans. Achieving seamless 360° textures typically requires expensive multi-view datasets with precise tracking. However, traditional methods struggle without back-view data or precise geometry, especially for human heads, where even minor inconsistencies disrupt realism. We introduce HairFree, an unsupervised texturing framework guided by textual descriptions and 2D diffusion priors, producing high-consistency 360° bald head textures—including non-human skin with fine details—without any texture, back-view, bald, non-human, or synthetic training data. We fine-tune a diffusion prior on a dataset of mostly frontal faces, conditioned on predicted 3D head geometry and face parsing. During inference, HairFree uses precise skin masks and 3D FLAME geometry as input conditioning, ensuring high 3D consistency and alignment. We synthesize the full 360° texture by first generating a frontal RGB image aligned to the 3D FLAME pose and mapping it to UV space. As the virtual camera moves, we inpaint and merge missing regions. A built-in semantic prior enables precise region separation—particularly for isolating and removing hair—allowing seamless integration with various assets like customizable 3D hair, eyeglasses, jewelry, etc. We evaluate HairFree quantitatively and qualitatively, demonstrating its superiority over state-of-the-art 3D head avatar generation methods. https://hairfree.is.tue.mpg.de/

2020 Deformation-Aware Unpaired Image Translation for Pose Estimation on Laboratory Animals
abstract
Our goal is to capture the pose of real animals using synthetic training examples, without using any manual supervision. Our focus is on neuroscience model organisms, to be able to study how neural circuits orchestrate behaviour. Human pose estimation attains remarkable accuracy when trained on real or simulated datasets consisting of millions of frames. However, for many applications simulated models are unrealistic and real training datasets with comprehensive annotations do not exist. We address this problem with a new sim2real domain transfer method. Our key contribution is the explicit and independent modeling of appearance, shape and pose in an unpaired image translation framework. Our model lets us train a pose estimator on the target domain by transferring readily available body keypoint locations from the source domain to generated target images. We compare our approach with existing domain transfer methods and demonstrate improved pose estimation accuracy on Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly), Caenorhabditis elegans (worm) and Danio rerio (zebrafish), without requiring any manual annotation on the target domain and despite using simplistic off-the-shelf animal characters for simulation, or simple geometric shapes as models. Our new datasets, code and trained models will be published to support future computer vision and neuroscientific studies.

2019 Seeing through Sounds: Predicting Visual Semantic Segmentation Results from Multichannel Audio Signals
abstract
Sounds provide us with vast amounts of information about surrounding objects and can even remind us visual images of them. Is it possible to implement this noteworthy human ability on machines? In this paper, we study a new task that consists of predicting image recognition results in the form of semantic segmentation with given multichannel audio signals. Our approach uses a convolutional neural network that is designed to directly output semantic segmentation results by taking audio features as its inputs. A bilinear feature fusion scheme is incorporated that efficiently models underlying higher-order interactions between audio and visual sources. Experimental evaluations with both synthetic and real sound datasets show that our approach can recover the desired segmented images reasonably well.
