2025 Pfeife: Automatic Pipeline Parallelism for PyTorch
abstract
The memory requirements of machine learning (ML) models has been growing quickly. However, the memory capacity of GPUs has not kept pace. Despite significant research on reducing the memory usage of ML models, the larger models do not fit in a single device. A popular solution to the memory capacity issue is to use multiple devices in parallel. In this paper, we focus on a particular form of parallelism called pipelining, as it offers a good balance between cost and performance for many ML models. We present Pfeife, the first tool that integrates with PyTorch to provide automatic pipelining of ML models. Pfeife intercepts the execution of models and parallelizes them transparently, requiring no manual work. We show that Pfeife can execute large models that would otherwise not run due to not fitting in a single device. Moreover, Pfeife can pipeline non-sequential models such as Stable Diffusion, which are not supported by existing pipelining parallelism tools. Pfeife outperforms state-of-the-art tools by up to 22%.

2022 SMT-Based Translation Validation for Machine Learning Compiler
abstract
Abstract Machine learning compilers are large software containing complex transformations for deep learning models, and any buggy transformation may cause a crash or silently bring a regression to the prediction accuracy and performance. This paper proposes an SMT-based translation validation framework for Multi-Level IR (MLIR), a compiler framework used by many deep learning compilers. It proposes an SMT encoding tailored for translation validation that is an over-approximation of the FP arithmetic and reduction operations. It performs abstraction refinement if validation fails. We also propose a new approach for encoding arithmetic properties of reductions in SMT. We found mismatches between the specification and implementation of MLIR, and validated high-level transformations for , , and with proper splitting.

2019 Tag2Pix: Line Art Colorization Using Text Tag With SECat and Changing Loss
abstract
Line art colorization is expensive and challenging to automate. A GAN approach is proposed, called Tag2Pix, of line art colorization which takes as input a grayscale line art and color tag information and produces a quality colored image. First, we present the Tag2Pix line art colorization dataset. A generator network is proposed which consists of convolutional layers to transform the input line art, a pre-trained semantic extraction network, and an encoder for input color information. The discriminator is based on an auxiliary classifier GAN to classify the tag information as well as genuineness. In addition, we propose a novel network structure called SECat, which makes the generator properly colorize even small features such as eyes, and also suggest a novel two-step training method where the generator and discriminator first learn the notion of object and shape and then, based on the learned notion, learn colorization, such as where and how to place which color. We present both quantitative and qualitative evaluations which prove the effectiveness of the proposed method.
