| 2024 | Rethinking Pragmatics in Large Language Models: Towards Open-Ended Evaluation and Preference TuningabstractThis study addresses the challenges of assessing and enhancing social-pragmatic inference in large language models (LLMs).We first highlight the inadequacy of current accuracy-based multiple choice question answering (MCQA) formats in assessing socialpragmatic reasoning, and propose the direct evaluation of models' free-form responses as measure, which correlates better with human judgment.Furthermore, we explore methods to improve pragmatic abilities in LLMs, advocating for preference optimization (PO) over supervised finetuning (SFT), given the absence of a definitive "gold" answer in social contexts. Our results show that preferential tuning consistently outperforms SFT across pragmatic phenomena and offers a near-free launch in pragmatic abilities without compromising general capabilities.Lastly, we examine the internal structure of LLMs, revealing that the significant boost in pragmatic reasoning is tied to deeper layer representations, analogous to human highlevel thinking. Our experiments span a variety of pragmatic and social reasoning datasets, as well as an image referential game requiring a multimodal theory of mind (ToM).With our refined paradigms for evaluating and enhancing pragmatic inference, this paper offers key insights into building more socially aware language models. | 2024 | Knowledge-Aware Artifact Image Synthesis with LLM-Enhanced Prompting and Multi-Source SupervisionabstractAncient artifacts are an important medium for cultural preservation and restoration. However, many physical copies of artifacts are either damaged or lost, leaving a blank space in archaeological and historical studies that calls for techniques to re-visualize these artifacts. Despite the significant advancements in open-domain text-to-image synthesis, existing approaches fail to capture the important domain knowledge presented in the textual descriptions of artifacts, resulting in errors in recreated images such as incorrect shapes and patterns. In this paper, we propose a novel knowledge-aware artifact image synthesis approach that brings lost historical objects accurately into their visual forms. We use a pretrained diffusion model as backbone and introduce three key techniques to enhance the text-to-image generation framework: 1) we construct prompts with explicit archaeological knowledge elicited from large language models (LLMs); 2) we incorporate additional textual guidance to correlated historical expertise in a contrastive manner; 3) we introduce further visual-semantic constraints on edge and perceptual features that enable our model to learn more intricate visual details of the artifacts. Compared to existing approaches, our proposed model produces higher-quality artifact images that align better with the implicit details and historical knowledge contained within written documents, thus achieving significant improvements both across automatic metrics and in human evaluation. | 2024 | Perceptional and actional enrichment for metaphor detection with sensorimotor normsabstractAbstract Understanding the nature of meaning and its extensions (with metaphor as one typical kind) has been one core issue in figurative language study since Aristotle’s time. This research takes a computational cognitive perspective to model metaphor based on the assumption that meaning is perceptual, embodied, and encyclopedic. We model word meaning representation for metaphor detection with embodiment information obtained from behavioral experiments. Our work is the first attempt to incorporate sensorimotor knowledge into neural networks for metaphor detection, and demonstrates superiority, consistency, and interpretability compared to peer systems based on two general datasets. In addition, with cross-sectional analysis of different feature schemas, our results suggest that metaphor, as a device of cognitive conceptualization, can be ‘learned’ from the perceptual and actional information independent of several more explicit levels of linguistic representation. The access to such knowledge allows us to probe further into word meaning mapping tendencies relevant to our conceptualization and reaction to the physical world. | 2022 | GA-SAM: Gradient-Strength based Adaptive Sharpness-Aware Minimization for Improved GeneralizationabstractRecently, Sharpness-Aware Minimization (SAM) algorithm has shown state-of-the-art generalization abilities in vision tasks. It demonstrates that flat minima tend to imply better generalization abilities. However, it has some difficulty implying SAM to some natural language tasks, especially to models with drastic gradient changes, such as RNNs.In this work, we analyze the relation between the flatness of the local minimum and its generalization ability from a novel and straightforward theoretical perspective. We propose that the shift of the training and test distributions can be equivalently seen as a virtual parameter corruption or perturbation, which can explain why flat minima that are robust against parameter corruptions or perturbations have better generalization performances. On its basis, we propose a Gradient-Strength based Adaptive Sharpness-Aware Minimization (GA-SAM) algorithm to help to learn algorithms find flat minima that generalize better. Results in various language benchmarks validate the effectiveness of the proposed GA-SAM algorithm on natural language tasks. | 2022 | Alleviating the Knowledge-Language Inconsistency: A Study for Deep Commonsense KnowledgeabstractKnowledge facts are typically represented by relational triples, while we observe that some commonsense facts are represented by triples whose forms are inconsistent with the corresponding language expressions. For commonsense mining tasks, this inconsistency raises a challenge for the prevailing methods using pre-trained language models that learn the expression of language. However, there are few studies which focus on this inconsistency issue. To fill this empty, in this paper, we term the commonsense knowledge whose triple form is heavily inconsistent with the language expression asdeep commonsense knowledgeand first conduct extensive exploratory experiments to study deep commonsense knowledge. We show that deep commonsense knowledge occupies a significant part of commonsense knowledge, while the conventional methods based on pre-trained language models fail to capture it effectively. We further propose a novel method to mine the deep commonsense knowledge from raw text that is exactly language expression, alleviating the reliance of conventional methods on the triple representation form. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed method substantially improves the performance in mining deep commonsense knowledge. Yi Zhang 0050, Lei Li 0039, Yunfang Wu, Qi Su 0001, Xu Sun 0001 |

| 2020 | Modeling the Stock Relation with Graph Network for Overnight Stock Movement PredictionabstractStock movement prediction is a hot topic in the Fintech area. Previous works usually predict the price movement in a daily basis, although the market impact of news can be absorbed much shorter, and the exact time is hard to estimate. In this work, we propose a more practical objective to predict the overnight stock movement between the previous close price and the open price. As no trading operation occurs after market close, the market impact of overnight news will be reflected by the overnight movement. One big obstacle for such task is the lacking of data, in this work we collect and publish the overnight stock price movement dataset of Reuters Financial News. Another challenge is that the stocks in the market are not independent, which is omitted by previous works. To make use of the connection among stocks, we propose a LSTM Relational Graph Convolutional Network (LSTM-RGCN) model, which models the connection among stocks with their correlation matrix. Extensive experiment results show that our model outperforms the baseline models. Further analysis shows that the introduction of the graph enables our model to predict the movement of stocks that are not directly associated with news as well as the whole market, which is not available in most previous methods. | 2019 | Regularizing Output Distribution of Abstractive Chinese Social Media Text Summarization for Improved Semantic ConsistencyabstractAbstractive text summarization is a highly difficult problem, and the sequence-to-sequence model has shown success in improving the performance on the task. However, the generated summaries are often inconsistent with the source content in semantics. In such cases, when generating summaries, the model selects semantically unrelated words with respect to the source content as the most probable output. The problem can be attributed to heuristically constructed training data, where summaries can be unrelated to the source content, thus containing semantically unrelated words and spurious word correspondence. In this article, we propose a regularization approach for the sequence-to-sequence model and make use of what the model has learned to regularize the learning objective to alleviate the effect of the problem. In addition, we propose a practical human evaluation method to address the problem that the existing automatic evaluation method does not evaluate the semantic consistency with the source content properly. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which outperforms almost all the existing models. Especially, the proposed approach improves the semantic consistency by 4% in terms of human evaluation. Bingzhen Wei, Xuancheng Ren, Yi Zhang 0050, Xiaoyan Cai, Qi Su 0001, Xu Sun 0001 |

| 2018 | Deconvolution-Based Global Decoding for Neural Machine TranslationabstractA great proportion of sequence-to-sequence (Seq2Seq) models for Neural Machine Translation (NMT) adopt Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to generate translation word by word following a sequential order. As the studies of linguistics have proved that language is not linear word sequence but sequence of complex structure, translation at each step should be conditioned on the whole target-side context. To tackle the problem, we propose a new NMT model that decodes the sequence with the guidance of its structural prediction of the context of the target sequence. Our model generates translation based on the structural prediction of the target-side context so that the translation can be freed from the bind of sequential order. Experimental results demonstrate that our model is more competitive compared with the state-of-the-art methods, and the analysis reflects that our model is also robust to translating sentences of different lengths and it also reduces repetition with the instruction from the target-side context for decoding. | 2018 | Learning When to Concentrate or Divert Attention: Self-Adaptive Attention Temperature for Neural Machine TranslationabstractMost of the Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models are based on the sequence-tosequence (Seq2Seq) model with an encoderdecoder framework equipped with the attention mechanism. However, the conventional attention mechanism treats the decoding at each time step equally with the same matrix, which is problematic since the softness of the attention for different types of words (e.g.content words and function words) should differ. Therefore, we propose a new model with a mechanism called Self-Adaptive Control of Temperature (SACT) to control the softness of attention by means of an attention temperature.Experimental results on the Chinese-English translation and English-Vietnamese translation demonstrate that our model outperforms the baseline models, and the analysis and the case study show that our model can attend to the most relevant elements in the source-side contexts and generate the translation of high quality. | 2018 | Semantic-Unit-Based Dilated Convolution for Multi-Label Text ClassificationabstractWe propose a novel model for multi-label text classification, which is based on sequenceto-sequence learning. The model generates higher-level semantic unit representations with multi-level dilated convolution as well as a corresponding hybrid attention mechanism that extracts both the information at the word-level and the level of the semantic unit. Our designed dilated convolution effectively reduces dimension and supports an exponential expansion of receptive fields without loss of local information, and the attention-overattention mechanism is able to capture more summary relevant information from the source context. Results of our experiments show that the proposed model has significant advantages over the baseline models on the dataset RCV1-V2 and Ren-CECps, and our analysis demonstrates that our model is competitive to the deterministic hierarchical models and it is more robust to classifying low-frequency labels 1 . | 2018 | Cross-Language Information Retrieval Based on Multiple InformationabstractAs predicted by Internet Data Center (IDC), the amount of global language data will exceed 40ZB by 2020. With the globalization of information, it has become an urgent matter for current web retrieval to break the barriers between languages. In this paper, we propose to integrate semantic and lexical information to deal with the task of cross-language information retrieval (CLIR). The approach does not rely on external knowledge bases thus to avoid that knowledge bases cannot deal with net neologism. Experiments on Sogou dataset show the feasibility of the approach. | 2008 | Hidden sentiment association in chinese web opinion miningabstractThe boom of product review websites, blogs and forums on the web has attracted many research efforts on opinion mining. Recently, there was a growing interest in the finer-grained opinion mining, which detects opinions on different review features as opposed to the whole review level. The researches on feature-level opinion mining mainly rely on identifying the explicit relatedness between product feature words and opinion words in reviews. However, the sentiment relatedness between the two objects is usually complicated. For many cases, product feature words are implied by the opinion words in reviews. The detection of such hidden sentiment association is still a big challenge in opinion mining. Especially, it is an even harder task of feature-level opinion mining on Chinese reviews due to the nature of Chinese language. In this paper, we propose a novel mutual reinforcement approach to deal with the feature-level opinion mining problem. More specially, 1) the approach clusters product features and opinion words simultaneously and iteratively by fusing both their content information and sentiment link information. 2) under the same framework, based on the product feature categories and opinion word groups, we construct the sentiment association set between the two groups of data objects by identifying their strongest n sentiment links. Moreover, knowledge from multi-source is incorporated to enhance clustering in the procedure. Based on the pre-constructed association set, our approach can largely predict opinions relating to different product features, even for the case without the explicit appearance of product feature words in reviews. Thus it provides a more accurate opinion evaluation. The experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-art algorithms.
