2024 Interactive Game Carpet with Gait Analysis for Children's Lower Limb Training
abstract
Children with cerebral palsy (CP) frequently struggle with slow walking, and irregular step and stride length, which require comprehensive lower limb rehabilitation exercises to improve and strengthen their leg muscles for daily activities. The current hospital rehabilitation programs are usually repetitive, making it difficult for kids to stick with the training in the long run. In order to encourage, track, and support children’s lower limb rehabilitation training, this study proposes an interactive gaming carpet and the intelligent gait pattern analysis that goes along with it. With the use of color, lighting, and sound cues, this game carpet design trains kids in bilateral leg coordination, single-leg stepping, and step length correction. In the meanwhile, therapists can use intelligent gait pattern analysis to help them objectively analyze children’s conditions and provide customized exercise plans.

2024 Multi-sensor Fusion-based Cow Health Monitoring IoT System
abstract
With the development of the Internet of Things (IoT), digital technology has been adopted on livestock farms. In this study, a system for monitoring the health status of dairy cows is proposed, utilizing multi-type sensor fusion and IoT technology. The system uses physiological and behavioral data obtained from a tail sensor attached to the cows to establish prenatal and estrus prediction models. Additionally, environmental sensors installed in the barn monitor parameters such as temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide concentration, and organic gas concentration to automatically regulate the barn’s fan and sprinkler based on preset threshold values. The system also monitors the health and tail behavior of the cows and predicts their calving and estrus times based on the collected data. Experimental results demonstrate that the system exhibits high accuracy and reliability in monitoring the health of dairy cows.

2024 A Digital Traditional Chinese Medicine Splint for Treatment of Distal Radius Fracture
abstract
Digital healthcare has improved the efficiency and quality of medical services by integrating sensing technology, thereby enhancing the medical service in specific fields. The application of digital healthcare in fracture treatment has yet to be fully explored. Many patients with fractures may suffer from sequelae such as wrist pain and limited mobility due to lack of follow-up, failure of the splint, and other reasons. This study proposes a digital Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) splint for treating distal radius fracture, which applies sensing technology in TCM orthopedic methods to address existing shortcomings, such as the inability to accurately monitor the splint's tightness and the skin's condition by integrating multi-sensors to monitor the pressure, temperature, and humidity of the radius fracture site in real-time. Experimental data has been collected to prove the effectiveness of the proposed digital splint.

2023 Interactive Rehabilitation Carpet for Children with Cerebral Palsy
abstract
Children with cerebral palsy (CP) can experience complex gait deviations and need to go through intensive lower extremity rehabilitation exercises to develop and enhance their motor control in daily living. However, most of them cannot persist in the regular repetitive exercise sessions using hospital-based equipment. To provide a playful and attractive rehabilitation environment, an interactive carpet with interchangeable covers and varied step lengths is introduced to motivate children for lower extremity training. The vibrant colours, engaging games, visual and audio feedback are designed to increase the carpet-human interaction. This carpet can support gait exercise with five types of step lengths, which improves its accessibility and usability for children with CP.

2022 A Computer Game-based Tangible Upper Limb Rehabilitation Device
abstract
In order to regain the motor control of upper limbs, stroke patients should go through various exercises to resume finger, hand and arm functions. During such exercises, they need constant assistance, guidance and support from either therapists or caregivers. Due to the increase of aging population, the demand for technology support in home-based stroke recovery has rapidly increased in the last decade. This paper presents an interactive prototype designed to facilitate finger grasping, hand gripping and arm reaching exercises at home. It consists of a portable device with light, audio feedback and a computer game with two scenes and visual guidance. Preliminary usability testing in the community with elderly persons indicates that this device is easy to follow, and enjoyable to play. These trials explore the possibility and feasibility of implementing such tangible interactive training at home or in community rehab centers, inspiring us to improve such designs further to support active rehabilitation.
