| 2025 | Byte vSwitch: A High-Performance Virtual Switch for Cloud NetworkingabstractVirtual switch is a fundamental component of cloud computing as it provides core networking functionalities for VMs and containers. Open vSwitch (OVS) is widely adopted in cloud environments due to its open-source nature, programmability, and rich set of features. At ByteDance, we initially adopted OVS in our public cloud, but as our cloud business grew, its generic design along with its complex code-base quickly became obstacles to improvements. Hence, we developed Byte vSwitch (BVS), a high-performance virtual switch that was specifically designed to address the performance, scalability, serviceability, and operational efficiency needs of our cloud services. More specifically, BVS adopts a simple architecture with an optimized hash table to maximize forwarding performance. In addition, we introduced several optimizations to improve BVS scalability, operability, and serviceability in cloud environments. Our evaluations show that BVS achieves up to 3.3× higher PPS and 25% lower latency compared to OVS. BVS has been deployed at scale across all regions of the ByteDance public cloud for over four years, and this paper presents our experience in designing, deploying, and operating BVS in production. | 2025 | ByteDance Jakiro: Enabling RDMA and TCP over Virtual Private CloudabstractA Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) that enables both RDMA and TCP provides advantages for both tenants and cloud providers. It serves the flexible demands of RDMA and TCP of tenant applications while delivering a cost-effective solution compared to the construction of two distinct overlay networks. In this study, we introduce Jakiro, an innovative framework of vNIC design that supports both RDMA and TCP within ByteDance Cloud. Jakiro holds the capability to support fundamental VPC features such as QoS, security groups, etc., for both RDMA and TCP streams while maintaining compatibility with applications and intra-host RDMA optimization techniques. We benchmark Jakiro's performance using basic test cases and real-world high-performance computing applications and distributed machine learning training. The results indicate that the RDMA performance of Jakiro is close to that of the physical RDMA. Concurrently, Jakiro guarantees a weighted fair QoS between RDMA and TCP. Jakiro has been deployed in ByteDance Cloud for one year, we share our critical design and deployment decisions, as well as experiences and lessons from production. | 2021 | Sailfish: accelerating cloud-scale multi-tenant multi-service gateways with programmable switchesabstractThe cloud gateway is essential in the public cloud as the central hub of cloud traffic. We show that horizontal scaling of software gateways, once sustainable for years, is no longer future-proof facing the massive scale and rapid growth of today's cloud. The root cause is the stagnant performance of the CPU core, which is prone to be overloaded by heavy hitters as traffic growth goes far beyond Moore's law. To address this, we propose \emph{Sailfish}, a cloud-scale multi-tenant multi-service gateway accelerated by programmable switches. The new challenge is that large forwarding tables due to multi-tenancy cannot be fit into the limited on-chip memories. To this end, we devise a multi-pronged approach with (1) hardware/software co-design for table sharing, (2) horizontal table splitting among gateway clusters, (3) pipeline-aware table compression for a single node. Compared with the x86 gateway of a similar price, Sailfish reduces latency by 95% (2μs), improves throughput by more than 20x in bps (3.2Tbps) and 71x in pps (1.8Gpps) with packet length < 256B. Sailfish has been deployed in Alibaba Cloud for more than two years. It is the first P4-based cloud gateway in the industry, of which a single cluster carries dozens of Tbps traffic, withstanding peak-hour traffic in large online shopping festivals. | 2019 | A Service-Agnostic Software Framework for Fast and Efficient in-Kernel Network ServicesabstractThis paper presents Polycube, an open-source software framework based on eBPF, that enables the creation of arbitrary and complex network function chains. Each function can include an efficient in-kernel data plane and a flexible user-space control plane with strong characteristics of isolation, persistence (e.g., across server reboots)and composability. In addition, a generic model for the control and management plane of each network function simplifies the manageability and accelerates the development of new network services. We validate the framework by creating different network services and benchmarking their performance in a complex scenario, namely a network provider for Kubernetes. Results show that Polycube programs are about 20x shorter than equivalent programs implemented with vanilla-eBPF.
