2025 Optimizing Age of Information in Random Access Networks: A Second-Order Approach for Active/Passive Users
abstract
In this paper, we study the moments of the Age of Information (AoI) for both active and passive users in a random access network. In this network, active users broadcast sensing data, while passive users detect in-band radio activities from out-of-network devices, such as jammers. Collisions occur when multiple active users transmit simultaneously. Passive users can detect radio activities only when no active user transmits. Each active user’s transmission behavior follows a Markov process. We aim to minimize the weighted sum of any moments of AoI for both user types. To achieve this, we employ a second-order analysis of system behavior. Specifically, we characterize an active user’s transmission Markov process using its mean and temporal variance. We show that any moment of the AoI can be approximated by a function of these two parameters. This insight enables us to analyze and optimize the transmission Markov process for active users. We apply this strategy to two different random access models. Simulation results show that policies derived from this strategy outperform other baseline policies.

2023 Minimizing Moments of AoI for Both Active and Passive Users through Second-Order Analysis
abstract
In this paper, we address the optimization problem of moments of Age of Information (AoI) for active and passive users in a random access network. In this network, active users broadcast sensing data while passive users only receive signals. Collisions occur when multiple active users transmit simultaneously, and passive users are unable to receive signals while any active user is transmitting. Each active user follows a Markov process for their transmissions. We aim to minimize the weighted sum of any moments of AoI for both active and passive users in this network. To achieve this, we employ a second-order analysis to analyze the system. Specifically, we characterize an active user’s transmission Markov process by its mean and temporal process. We show that any moment of the AoI can be expressed a function of the mean and temporal variance, which, in turn, enables us to derive the optimal transmission Markov process. Our simulation results demonstrate that this proposed strategy outperforms other baseline policies that use different active user transmission models.

2021 Distributed Blockchain-Based Authentication and Authorization Protocol for Smart Grid
abstract
Authentication and authorization (A & A) mechanisms are critical to the security of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Smart grid system processing and exchanging data without human intervention, known as smart grids, are well‐known as IoT scenarios. Entities in such smart grid systems need to identify and validate one another and ensure the integrity of data exchange mechanisms. However, at present, most commonly used A & A protocols are centralized, resulting in security risks such as information leaks, illegal access, and identity theft. In this study, we propose a new distributed A & A protocol for smart grid networks based on blockchain technology to address with these risks. The proposed protocol integrates the decentralized authentication and immutable ledger characteristics of blockchain architectures suitable for power systems with a novel blockchain technique to realize both identity authentication and resource authorization for smart grid systems. We discuss the security of and threat models for prior A & A protocols and demonstrate how our protocol protects against these threats. We further demonstrate an approach to a real deployment of our A & A protocol using the FISCO consortium platform, applying algorithms from smart contract systems. Finally, we present the results of experimental simulations showing the efficacy and efficiency of our proposed protocol.

2019 Teaching a robot to draw: hand gesture demonstration based on human-robot interaction
abstract
With the development of collaborative robots, robot programming by demonstration (PBD) plays an important role in human-robot interaction, it aims to transfer new skills from observations of tasks demonstrated by humans to robots. In this paper, we proposed a new approach to teach a robot to draw pictures based on human fingertip recognition and hand motion tracking. Combining the robot operating system (ROS), OpenCV and Moveit (motion planning libraries), we capture the finger movement trajectory by using Kinect2 depth camera. Then the trajectory waypoint is sent to the ur5 robotic arm through topic communication to complete the trajectory tracking task. The experiment indicates that the proposed approach allows inexperienced users to efficiently teach a robot to track the demonstrated trajectory.

2019 Video player controlled by gesture based on convolutional neural network
abstract
In this paper, we propose an economical system for remote video player control. Through this system, we can use several simple gestures to control the video player, and these gestures can be alternated based on the user’s requirement and habits. The datasets used to train the gesture recognition model are recorded by a simple web camera in the laboratory. We utilize the CNN (convolutional neural network) to train the datasets and the user interface is designed by PyQt5. The gesture recognition system can be applied to switching television programs, controlling video games and household appliances etc.
