2022 High-quality indoor scene 3D reconstruction with RGB-D cameras: A brief review
abstract
High-quality 3D reconstruction is an important topic in computer graphics and computer vision with many applications, such as robotics and augmented reality. The advent of consumer RGB-D cameras has made a profound advance in indoor scene reconstruction. For the past few years, researchers have spent significant effort to develop algorithms to capture 3D models with RGB-D cameras. As depth images produced by consumer RGB-D cameras are noisy and incomplete when surfaces are shiny, bright, transparent, or far from the camera, obtaining high-quality 3D scene models is still a challenge for existing systems. We here review high-quality 3D indoor scene reconstruction methods using consumer RGB-D cameras. In this paper, we make comparisons and analyses from the following aspects: (i) depth processing methods in 3D reconstruction are reviewed in terms of enhancement and completion, (ii) ICP-based, feature-based, and hybrid methods of camera pose estimation methods are reviewed, and (iii) surface reconstruction methods are reviewed in terms of surface fusion, optimization, and completion. The performance of state-of-the-art methods is also compared and analyzed. This survey will be useful for researchers who want to follow best practices in designing new high-quality 3D reconstruction methods.

2021 Optimization-Based Visual-Inertial SLAM Tightly Coupled with Raw GNSS Measurements
abstract
Unlike loose coupling approaches and the EKF-based approaches in the literature, we propose an optimization-based visual-inertial SLAM tightly coupled with raw Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements, a first attempt of this kind in the literature to our knowledge. More specifically, reprojection error, IMU pre-integration error and raw GNSS measurement error are jointly minimized within a sliding window, in which the asynchronism between images and raw GNSS measurements is accounted for. In addition, issues such as marginalization, noisy measurements removal, as well as tackling vulnerable situations are also addressed. Experimental results on public dataset in complex urban scenes show that our proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art visual-inertial SLAM, GNSS single point positioning, as well as a loose coupling approach, including scenes mainly containing low-rise buildings and those containing urban canyons.

2021 BSP-MonoLoc: Basic Semantic Primitives based Monocular Localization on Roads
abstract
Robust visual localization in traffic scenes is a fundamental problem for self-driving vehicles. However, it is still challenging to achieve accurate localization performance because of drastic viewpoint and illumination changes. To address the issues, we design a novel monocular localization framework based on a light-weight prior map, called BSP-MonoLoc, which leverages the 2D semantic primitives from the monocular images and the 3D basic semantic primitives from the prior map. These primitives are commonly available but lack of distinctive signature. To effectively make associations between the 2D and 3D primitives and refine the vehicle’s pose, we adopt an iterative optimization method, where an efficient hierarchical sample strategy is designed to give a good initial prediction for the associations and the pose. Experimental results on the KAIST dataset and our dataset demonstrate the proposed method can achieve high localization accuracy and run at a real-time performance.

2020 Scene-Unified Image Translation For Visual Localization
abstract
Visual localization is a key technology in the field of 3D robot vision. One of its major difficulties lies in how to deal with the challenges brought by the appearance changes of query images and database images caused by large time spans. Many methods focus on extracting more robust features from images to deal with the impact of complex scenes. In this paper, we explore the impact of image translation on visual localization tasks in complex scenes. We propose UniGAN - a modified image translation model, fusing semantic label constraints and finer reconstruction losses, to unify images captured under different environmental conditions to a standard scene more suitable for localization tasks. To estimate the 6-DOF camera pose, a two-stage localization framework composed of image retrieval and local matching is utilized. Experiments show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of both accuracy and robustness to environmentally sensitive scenes.

2020 Boosting Image-Based Localization Via Randomly Geometric Data Augmentation
abstract
Visual localization is a fundamental problem in computer vision and robotics. Recently, deep learning has shown to be effective for robust monocular localization. Most deep learning-based methods utilize convolution neural network (CNN) to regress global 6 degree-of-freedom (Dof) pose. However, these methods suffer from pose sparsity, leading to over-fitting during training and poor localization performance on unseen data. In this paper, we try to alleviate this issue by implementing randomly geometric augmentation (RGA) during training. Specifically, we firstly estimate the depth map using a depth estimation network for the initial training image. Combing the estimated depth, RGB image and its corresponding pose, we can randomly synthesize new images of different views. The synthesized and initial images are used to train the pose regression network. Experiment results show our geometric augmentation strategy can significantly improve the localization accuracy.

2020 Dynamic Object-Aware Monocular Visual Odometry With Local And Global Information Aggregation
abstract
In this paper, we present a deep learning-based approach to monocular visual odometry. We propose a LCGR(Local Convolution and Global RNN) module which utilizes several independent 3D convolution layers to filter noise from features extracted by FlowNet, as well as to model local information, and a Bi-ConvLSTM layer to model time series and capture global information. In addition, our network jointly predicts optical flow as an auxiliary task by measuring photometric consistency in a self-supervised way to help the encoder for better motion feature extraction. In order to alleviate the effects of non-Lambertian surfaces and dynamical objects in the scene, a confidence mask layer is estimated and epipolar constraint is added to the training process. Experiment results indicate competitive performance of the proposed framework to the state-of-art methods.

2019 Visual-Inertial Odometry Tightly Coupled with Wheel Encoder Adopting Robust Initialization and Online Extrinsic Calibration
abstract
Combining camera, IMU and wheel encoder is a wise choice for car positioning because of the low cost and complementarity of the sensors. We propose a novel extended visual-inertial odometry algorithm tightly fusing data from the above three sensors. Firstly we propose an IMU-odometer pre-integration approach utilizing complete IMU measurements and wheel encoder readings, to make scale estimation more accurate in subsequent 4-degrees of freedom (DoF) optimization. Secondly we develop an original initialization module where encoder readings are fully utilized to refine gravity direction and provide an initial value for camera pose in real scale. Thirdly, we design a computationally efficient online extrinsic calibration method by fixing the linearization point for the rotational component of IMU-odometer extrinsic parameters, which is deployed depending on the convergence of accelerometer bias. Experimental results prove the robustness of our initialization module and the accuracy of the whole trajectory, as well as the improvement brought about by online extrinsic calibration. Our program can also run on an Nvidia Jetson TX2 module in real time.

2018 Progressive Large-Scale Structure-from-Motion with Orthogonal MSTs
abstract
Pairwise image matching plays a vital role in Structure-from-Motion (SfM). Though the image-retrieval method accelerates the matching process, the number of neighbors is usually hard to determine. Insufficient feature matches could break the completeness of reconstructed scene, while redundant pairs may bring in many erroneous ones. In this paper, we propose a progressive SfM method to tackle the completeness, robustness and efficiency problems in a united framework, where two loops are contained. The outer loop is a feature matching loop, where the orthogonal MSTs (maximum spanning trees) of the image similarity graph is iteratively selected to perform the image matching. The inner loop is an incremental camera calibration loop, where the initial camera poses in each iteration are inherited from those calibrated in the last one. By progressively performing the image matching and calibration, we find both loops converge fast and a large number of redundant pairs are excluded. Experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our method in terms of both efficiency and robustness on various image datasets, and our method also has a large potential to tackle the ambiguity problems in SfM.

2018 Voting-based Incremental Structure-from-Motion
abstract
Incremental Structure-from-Motion (SfM) technique is the most prevalent way for image-based reconstruction, but its robustness is highly relying on each camera registration, where a false calibration could make everything following fail. In this paper, we propose a voting-based incremental SfM approach to improve upon the camera registration process. First, the degree of closeness between cameras is used as the vote to determine which cameras are going to register. Then, for each camera, two methods are simultaneously used to estimate the camera pose, and the number of inliers is used as the vote to determine which pose is more accurate. Finally, by estimating the priori global camera rotations from the view-graph, the camera poses that are consistent with the priori camera rotations are considered as getting double votes and preferentially kept. After all these prioritized cameras are calibrated, the other cameras are then incrementally registered. Compared to the state-of-the-art incremental SfM approaches, extensive experiments demonstrate that our system performs similarly or better in terms of reconstruction efficiency, while achieves a better robustness and accuracy. Especially for the ambiguous datasets, our system has a better potential to reconstruct them.

2018 High-Quality and Memory-Efficient Volumetric Integration of Depth Maps Using Plane Priors
abstract
Volumetric integration method is widely used to fuse depth maps in dense 3D reconstruction systems. High memory footprint is one of its main disadvantages. We introduce a method to de-noise depth maps and save memory usage during volumetric integration of depth maps with the use of plane priors. We develop a new planar region detection method with the use of depth gradients and then de-noise the planar region of depth maps. During volumetric integration we allocate the voxels and integrate depth maps with the use of plane priors as well. Extensive experiments show that our method saves approximately 30% memory footprint and has higher reconstruction quality compared with some of the current state-of-the-art systems. These characteristics enable our method to be used for 3D scanning on mobile devices which have limited memory resources.

2018 Online Temporal Calibration of Camera and IMU using Nonlinear Optimization
abstract
In this paper, we aim to calibrate the time delay of timestamps of cameras and IMU measurements provided by Android smart phones or other low-cost devices whose camera and IMU are not temporally aligned. The time delay is estimated online in an iterative way through nonlinear optimization in sliding windows. We add new terms that are relative to time delay to the pre-integration results of IMU measurements instead of feature observations in order to improve the precision of temporal calibration. The experimental results indicate that our calibration result is closer to the real value compared with the state-of-the-art system and that our method appears to converge faster. By using our temporal calibration, the visual inertial odometry algorithm is less likely to suffer from fast turning or sudden stop.

2015 Efficient Large-Scale Structure From Motion by Fusing Auxiliary Imaging Information
abstract
One of the potentially effective means for large-scale 3D scene reconstruction is to reconstruct the scene in a global manner, rather than incrementally, by fully exploiting available auxiliary information on the imaging condition, such as camera location by Global Positioning System (GPS), orientation by inertial measurement unit (or compass), focal length from EXIF, and so on. However, such auxiliary information, though informative and valuable, is usually too noisy to be directly usable. In this paper, we present an approach by taking advantage of such noisy auxiliary information to improve structure from motion solving. More specifically, we introduce two effective iterative global optimization algorithms initiated with such noisy auxiliary information. One is a robust rotation averaging algorithm to deal with contaminated epipolar graph, the other is a robust scene reconstruction algorithm to deal with noisy GPS data for camera centers initialization. We found that by exclusively focusing on the estimated inliers at the current iteration, the optimization process initialized by such noisy auxiliary information could converge well and efficiently. Our proposed method is evaluated on real images captured by unmanned aerial vehicle, StreetView car, and conventional digital cameras. Extensive experimental results show that our method performs similarly or better than many of the state-of-art reconstruction approaches, in terms of reconstruction accuracy and completeness, but is more efficient and scalable for large-scale image data sets.

2010 Stereo matching with adaptive support-weight correlation and Graph Cuts
abstract
Constructing a reliable data term and occlusion handling are two important issues for energy model based stereo method. In this paper, we at first use a 2-step adaptive support-weight correlation approach to get a reliable correlation volume. Then a pixel classification is proposed which classifies pixels into three classes: occluded, unstable and stable. For each pixel, according its class, a confidence weight is assigned. After that a new energy model is then constructed by integrating the correlation volume and the confidence weight. Finally, through minimizing this energy using Graph cuts, a better disparity map is obtained. Experimental results on the Middlebury data set show that our proposed method has the similar good performance with the top rank Graph Cuts based algorithms listed on the Middlebury homepage.
